Retail Abit IN9 32X-MAX - Pictures, observations and testing...

Now that I have left my system up for a while, well, more than 24 hours, it seems very stable.. am running with essentially the max stable OC I could get with my cpu/mem on the p5w dh..


3.5ghz @ 1.5vcore (but I think on this board it might need less, still testing that)
fsb @ 1556, 9x multi
pci-e locked @ 105mhz
mem linked + sync'd for 778mhz effective @ 3-3-3-9 1t (the p5w dh would only do 2t tho)

CPU VTT @ 1.50
NB @ 1.45
SB @ 1.60
HT @ 1.30

Does the CPU VTT on this board equate to CPU "HT" from the 680i tips thread? in that thread it said to run at @ 1.50v (max) for best stability.. I didn't see ny excess heat or anything when I turned it up, so I left it there..

I played LOTRO for like 6 hours yesterday with these settings and there were no issues what-so-ever.. but my PWM is getting into the 80s with the stock sink.. so I am going to fall back to my aftermarket setup when I yank my psu on Sunday to swap it for the newer revision one. The sound coming from the PWM seems to be a little quiter, else I am getting used to it. heh.. I'm going to camp on my current settings to let the board burn in a little.. then try some more OCing when I get the new psu.. I think this cpu has 3.6ghz stable in it.. ..(think/hope).. I could bench with that on the p5w dh but was not prime/orthos stable at all.. I think it might have been the mobo tho.. didn't seem to behave well when I dumped the multi to 8x and ran @ 400 fsb.. anyways, I want to try this mobo @ 8x to see what she'll do. :)

is it mandatory to increase SB voltage? I doesn't change it.

even with VTT 1.5, NB 1.5, HT 1.4 - I can't hit more than 400MHz.

actually, I think the reason is the low HT voltage and it's needed to increase SB voltage to get it more stable on high fsb's.

with both Asus 680i boards I was able to hit 500MHz easily with default SB voltage, 1.52v HT, 1.5 VTT, 1.5 NB.

my bios is official 1.0. So, I see that there are no 1333 strap and if I set it as "by CPU" I'm able to boot with 450MHz but it's unstable even in windows idle. I see that mem latency goes slower +20ns -> it means that 1333 strap enabled, but it looks like not all chipset settings was set correctly since it's really unstable.

Does anyone has beta4 bios? Could you please share it?

I'm going to try beta1 and beta2 today.

ps: am I right with USB keyborad settings like OS and not BIOS?

revenant, please note that with low multi - your NB works on higher clocks. (NBCC freq)

i didn't notice anywhere but do any of you know if it has problems with sli and sound cards like asus and evga have on theres ?

my E6600 able to run 32M with 515x9 on Asus boards. So, no issues with CPU limitation. PWM temps goes around 50-60C.

we need at least 1.55v HT voltage! even on Asus 680i boards I was not able to hit 460-500MHz stable on 1.4v HT...

furthermore... I found a bug in beta2. It's regarding strap...

so, on common 680i motherboards you have nice latency and NB settings till 425MHz fsb. With beta2 bios (can't boot with 420MHz on bios v1.0) we have BIG delays even on 420MHz. Strap tested: "By CPU" and "1066". Look at this:

@Nilson: I agree that HT limitation of 1.4v is something Abit has to seriously consider in their next bios.
has been a key voltage for high fsb's and stability in 680i platforms.
I had the p5n32-e sli and the striker extreme and ht's were 1.5v or above for 400-500 fsb's. although i have to admit those boards where nowhere close to abit's superb voltage control and accuracy.

Another thing i noticed is that 680i's don't like low multi's and high fsb combinations, that showing in memory benchmarks (bandwidth-latency) and pi times.So please check your high fsb oc's cause you're probably turning your 680i beast into a slower pc.

@Neorecon: do yourself a favor and read back in this thread. it's one of the best threads i've seen and pretty much everything about this board has been covered here.

@momomo6789: sli is not a problem with this board. doing quad 2x gx2 stable @ 3.4g w/ qx6700.
raid has no problem either.
no sound issues (cracks-pops) with the onboard audio. haven't tried an audio card.(no space!!) had pops and crackles with both asus boards and the analog devices hd audio chip.(lowering output levels helped reduce peaking-digital distortion.)

LOL. I thought I had already but I guess I missed that.

Well my board is rock solid with my E6600@3.6Ghz 1.45v and memory at 800Mhz but anything above it it crashes with Orthos at about 8 minutes. However I was very gentle with the SB voltages as well as HT etc so it could be a reason since I did not increase those. It boots at 3.8Ghz and could also complete a 3dmark06 for 15800 3Dmarks but it was at 1.72volts for CPU.

Anyway my problem is that i need to put a fan on the PWMs since at 1.7v they hit 100c and my southbridge gets really hot since I am only having the cut off stock piece (I cut the stock cooling in pieces). My NB is watercooled so no issues there.

Should I bother with watercooling the SB or is a TT Extreme Spirit II enough?

The funny part now is that I have a PA120.2 for the NB only - a bit overkill but CPU and GPUs have also their dedicated loops and radiators.

i hope beta 4 comes next weeek :(

@ JargonGR: A re Patrida!..Will the TT fit in for sli? have you tried it? if yes it should do the job.
ideally i would put pwm nb and sb on the pa120.2 loop.. if i had the pwm and sb blocks that is.

Well I managed to fit it using the screws from the Alphacool Waterblock I had and it fit perfectly. I will order the Blocks from MIPs if after the new BIOS I can't overclock more than 3.6ghz. This chip could do 3.6GHZ on air but not even boot any further. Now I can boot and work in windows at 3.8ghz but was no go for Orthos after 13mins. Ofc I did not play with the voltages at all since the SB was badly cooled. Now I will play around and see. I don't think the 1.7v is really needed since it also boots at 1.65v.

Will check tomorrow since I have to go out now.

As u can see the little brother QuadGT, has a copper pwm stock sink.
If abit are selling these, they would be a good solution.

also found a similar pwm layout on a foxconn 975 board over at O2:

hopefully there will be other aftermarket solutions since the pwm trend is here to stay.

Well I am all set with the NB (watercooled) and an Extreme Spirit II on the SB (had to play a bit to fit it with SLI). For the PWMs I just used the stock heatsink and folded the thermal pad in the middle as Johny Bravo did.

But if I used an extreme voltages on the CPU 1.68 -1.72 then the PWMs get close to 100C in Orthos. With 1.45v they hover at around 55c-60c on load max depending on room temperature.

So now I will check if I can stabilise it @ 3.8GHZ by playing around with the VTT and the other voltages a bit.

Will post results soon.

It's one of the early spotted issues with the AW9D, discussed in depth here.
several tests have been done to prove it:
1) CPUz 1.33 or earlier shows the different speed of each core.
2) If you run 4 SuperPi's assigned to each core individually (affinity=0, etc.) you will get 2 high and 2 low scores.
3) In Cinebench the ratio between 1 CPU and x CPUs (=4 CPUs) varies from 3x to 3.5x, depending on whether one of the slow cores have been used for the "1 CPU" part of the test.
4) wPrime detects the speed of the slower cores, so CPUz 1.38 will tell you 12x300 and after you get the score, wPrime will tell you 10x300.

My only concern is if the IN9 suffers from the same issue, cause mine is on its way...

Overclocking Update:

FSB 411,VCORE 1.6250v, CPU @3.7Ghz 3 hours Orthos Stable (E6600)

They certainly need to release a new bios since I think the board behaves strange with certain voltages as well here is what I mean

With those voltages its rock solid @ 3.7Ghz
VTT 1.5v
NB 155v
SB1.6v
Hyper 1.4v(max as of now)
DDR 2.4v
NB DDR ref 0%
DDRref 0%

However funny things happen if I increase the FSB and there are certainly holes
FSB 427
CPU @3.85Ghz with 1.6050 1.5min Orthos
with 1.6150 2min Orthos
with 1,6250 most stable can play games for an hour but Orthos crashes it

up to 1.7250 eratic behaviour some good some bad and some voltages will not boot at all. What I mean is that there is no sign of the CPU clearly indicating higher or lower setting at this FSB it just crashes sooner or later.

The same from ,15250 to 1.650v

But I guess its the FSB.

I will try 440 and will post findings later but I am afraid that my CPU is maxing out at around 3.8Ghz so we will see.

Overclocking Update

Nothing beyond 411FSB 3.7GHZ stable no matter what voltage combinations - it boots to windows up to 3960 but crashes to Orthos at about 1-2mins.
The fact that it behaves the same upt ot 3960Mhz from 1.6250v to 1.7250 makes me think that a new bios could make it stable or some more HTT voltage than 1.40v.

However I also upped the memory (PC8500 OCZ Titanium Alpha) to 1100mhz 2.55v 4-4-4-12. Do you think that the voltage is too high for the memory? I am cooling it with the OCZ fan cooler.

Another issue I have is a Buzz whenever the memory is stressed (Orthos, games, 3Dmark), what can this be? The buzzing is not there unless the memory is stressed anyone knows?

I have been watching this thread with a lot of interest from the start as I have been getting parts together for a little over a month for my new PC. I don't know if anyone has seen this:

2X1GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer PC2 8000
74 GB Western Digital Raptor
EVGA 8800GTS
OCZ GameXStream 700Watt psu
cooled by a Zalman 9700, a 40mm fan on the NB heatsink, and corsair dominator ram fans
all inside an Antec P180B case

I am going to try to get this stable at 3.4 Ghz on air for day to day use, and I'll keep everyone posted on how things come along, however I haven't got all the parts yet and won't get them for a couple of weeks as I need to get paid again before I can order. Keep up the good work and I'll keep reading.

1. Someone mentioned that there's no beta4 (Yellowbeard was that you?) Where'd you hear that from?
2. There's been some talk about NBCC problems, afaik that was to do with the Intel chipsets and even at that was kinda disproved as something else. I'll look into it tho and see
3. I'm liking the alternative cooling chat, keep it up, I have something to show you all very soon that might be of interest ;)

Also in terms on overclocking I've got a little pic that may inspire some of you to keep trying :

Validation

This was done with a delta 60mm on the NB nothing else, no vmods no fancy cooling elsewhere. I honestly just stopped trying any harder because I was tired that night and then dismantled the IN9 rig to test a new board. The plan from here is a full set of mods, quality forced air cooling on the north and south bridges and fancy new PWM heatsink and to round it off a full set of vmods. I'm hoping ot beat the Asus striker results on air for Abit bragging rights but it ain't looking easy.

Unlinked mode is a PAIN! IF your not interested in really figuring out the workings of your board just go Linked with dividers, the unlinked dividers are a joke and several of them seem to be pretty flaky to say the least. Kunaak has done some good work on this in the Intel section look at his threads here and here My advice, keep it simple and stay on the linked mode till you figure out the actual limits of your RAM and CPU then see how close you can get them to play together in unlinked mode...but don't expect miracles.

As for the vmods I'm gonna get some decent pics of the boards and get them posted. Hipro5 has cheekily got the HT vmod before me but I'll see if I can't steal it off him :p: j/k George :toast:

Last I heard from Abit it was beta4 that would be released, not shelved and replaced with beta5. See if I can get to the bottom of this.

Quick questions about thermal grease application on the heatsinks, on the nb and sb sinks, is a thin layer applied to the chips underneath enough when you remove the factory pads? Also, I am going to keep the pad on the PWM sink, should I put thermal grease in the pockets of the factory pad?

Hey Guys, I just installed the I9N 32x Max this weekend. After having two EVGA boards fail, I thought I would try the ABIT board cause I wanted to try the Digital PWM with My Vapochill LS. I have tried the original BIOS 10 and have Flashed to Beta BIOS V.11. I was not able to Unlock my X6800 Extreme Edition. Also, the board will not allow me to run my Dominator 8888 at stock 1111MHz, 4-4-4-12-2T on 2.4V. However I was able to boot to my RAID 1 Array that I had used on the EVGA 680i, although I did have to reactivate WinXP on the phone by Microsoft. I have not OCe'd the CPU (can't unlock) or the FSB yet. It will not allow a 1333 FSB on the Beta v.11. I was able to boot with the Dominators set to 800MHz at 3-4-3-9-1T without a hitch, and my first run on 3DMark06 was 12,411:toast: with my twin 88GTX's at 650MHZ/2000MHz.

Should I go back to the Original BIOS v.10 ??? OR Should I wait to see if ABIT releases a WHQL or another Beta BIOS???
Also, I am only running on INTEL Stock Air Cooling for the CPU but I am water Cooling the NB as well as the twin 88's. I plan on getting the Alphacool Mosfet WBlocks installed before I put on the Vapochill, Plus I would like to have my Multi Unlocked from down to x6 and up to x20 or how high it is supposed to go which is I believe x60. I just want a GOOD BIOS to work with!!!:mad:

None of the current beta BIOS's allow upward clocking yet. I'm sure the fnial bios 11 will though.

This board really suxs for me so far. Biggest disapointment of every core 2 duo board I've purchased. 1700FSB go then no go then go, 1800 FSB no go, 1900 FSB no go, 1600FSB go then no go then go. I've tried both the shipping bios and the v1.1 beta 2. I tried a cpu that ran over 3.8ghz on the RD600 & over 3.7ghz on the evga. Not happy am I:mad:

The Nemesis, just wait for new official bios release. They are going to fix fsb hole 450-495MHz. In this range - some CPU's can boot, some not.... but anyway it's unstable. NB timings issue should be fixed too.

let's wait for new bios release..... I hope that they will add more HT voltage too......

Johny Bravo regarding the Unlinked mode you are right its a pain and it does behave weird but after a full day of testing and increasing FSB in increaments of 3 I managed to get my E6600 stable at 3.7Ghz 1.6250v in unlinked mode (it runs Orthos 4 hours then I stop it no crash). My memory runs at 1000 4-4-4-12 2.5v now (can do 1100 but @2.55v - abit high).

All Sb,NB, VTT, HTT voltages are maxed out and I am using water cooling on the CPU and NB. The SB is on a TT Extreme Spirit II and the PWMs on the stock heatsink with folded pad.

What I noticed is that there are holes and bios issues since I get the same instability issues from 3.750Mhz to 3.960Mhz no matter what I try. I can boot up to 3960 1.65v (unlinked) but Orthos crahes it. So I will wait for the new bios and try again. The chip can do 3.6ghz on the P5W64S @1.45v on air.

I have not OCe'd the CPU (can't unlock) or the FSB yet. It will not allow a 1333 FSB on the Beta v.11. I was able to boot with the Dominators set to 800MHz at 3-4-3-9-1T without a hitch, and my first run on 3DMark06 was 12,411:toast: with my twin 88GTX's at 650MHZ/2000MHz.

Should I go back to the Original BIOS v.10 ??? OR Should I wait to see if ABIT releases a WHQL or another Beta BIOS???
Also, I am only running on INTEL Stock Air Cooling for the CPU but I am water Cooling the NB as well as the twin 88's. I plan on getting the Alphacool Mosfet WBlocks installed before I put on the Vapochill, Plus I would like to have my Multi Unlocked from down to x6 and up to x20 or how high it is supposed to go which is I believe x60. I just want a GOOD BIOS to work with!!!:mad:

I build my Abit IN9 this weekend

Using the corsair 8500c5d (with optional Fan)
E6600 Batch 29b (stock fan)
An old borrowed 6600 video card
TT 750w

Temps on 3100ghz @ 1,28 V

idle 33 load 52 (stock fan)

But my temps from PWM were idle 61 to 100 Load ( 10 min orthos)

So i used Johnny's advise to remount the silent copperpainted coca cola can aluminium.

I folded the tape and temps went down to 45 49 degrees idle and 62 under load (10 min)

But now want to know what de NB and SB temps are, i saw Jargon asked this question before but i haven't seen an answer.(I am in the possesion of an IR Thermometer, but i like to know the inside, when the sink isn't attached i misread the temp)

(i know 10 min orthos aren't much :slapass: but i didn't have enough time.

First off, let me explain my POST above. The reason that I had TWO evga boards fail was the fact that I was performing Extreme Overclocking with the 680i and the CPU running on VAPOCHILL LS and -53 Degrees Celcius and I had MAXED OUT all the Values and Voltages till the board would not give a POST. EVGA has stood by thier board and have approved both RMA's.
The reason for my post in this thread was the fact that it is about the ABIT IN9 32X-MAX board, which I had decided to try because of the boards DIGITAL PWM's, as I had stated above. I also wanted to get some imput from others who are working with this ABIT board, and find out what kind of support is being offered.

I do however recommend EVGA's 680i board, because of the FACT that they do have the best support of anyone for Nvidia's 680i Chipset. And the fact that there are only a small percentage of board RMA's compared with the number being sold. The fact is that EVGA is standing by its products and you also know that you can actually call them and talk to someone night or day about Your boards problems.
EVGA stands by all of thier products and so do I. Like I said above, I wanted to try this ABIT board out because of the Digital PWM's to see how it would perform with the Vapochill.

Finally all of my parts are in and I'll be starting my build tonight. First run it to get everything assembled and tested to ensure it all works OK. Second run will be to modify the case for some nice cable management.
My Xeon showed up this AM and it is a '631B' series, so we'll see how well it does.

do not put any thermal grease in the pockets on the pad (PWM).. you can fold over the PWM pad for tighter contact, but honestly, it didn't improve anything for me.. as for the NB and SB, yes, a very thin layer is all you want.. give a push on the sinks when you put them on again, and when the push pins are pushed back in the mobo, you might want to use a super tiny jewelers screw driver to, how do I put this, expand the "spacers" again, so to make sure there's good force on the sinks, holding them in.. the springs on them are pretty stiff, which is good.. so you don't need to do that, but I like to, just to ensure max holding pressure.

I'd recommend using a thermal paste on the NB/SB but keep the thermal pad for the PWM heatsink, as the PWM seem to have a larger gap and there are reports of board warping/unevenness in this area.

It is finally ALIVE!

I have some weird HD issues to sort out with my two drives, but otherwise first time off everything fired up and posted without problems. My CPU is running idle at about 24C with my ThermalRight.

I have to say that this Antex 900 case, while it looks spacious without anything in it shure did jam up full quickly. It is going to take some time to think through my cable management for this case. I find myself wishing I had bought a modular PSU...or deciding if I want to take the time to mod my PSU to work specifically with my layout and eliminate unnecessary cables.... decisions decisions.

Hopefully tomorrow I can get my OS installed. :banana:

I have to admit ABIT did a grate job on as for this mobo....I'm happy - for now - but I'll be more happy IF I get the same resaults under LN2 too.....:)

My ASUS Striker could get my rams up to 416MHz 3D benchable and this one can get them up to 438MHz......I didn't cuptured any screens from the 438MHz though but I'll do it some time.....:)

These are 2 x 512MB Corsair 8000UL Fatbodies.....I've moded their SPD as I pleased and add into it the EPP instractions as well.....:)

I took a Super-Pi 1M bench at 438MHz with the above timmings too.....
3D Benchable are at 431MHz.....
Good thing is that I didn't encode NOT ONE SINGLE problem booting and benching at those frequenchies where with the Striker I had frezzes, reboots, etc, at 418MHz rams frequency....
IF ABIT unlock the upper multies for the X6800s and the QUADs, and IF this mobo does the SAME under LN2 as it does on air, I think it'll be grate.....I'll wait and see......:)

P.S. I don't care with which mobo I'll bench - ASUS - ABIT - EVGA - etc. I care to bench with the mobo that gets me higher and stabler.....
I'm telling this coz some guys told that I'm sponsored by ABIT somehow.....I like ABIT BUT keep in mind that I'll bench with the mobo that gets me HIGHER.... I CARE to reach the highest benchable frequency with whatever mobo does this for me....Wouldn't you?......;)
So far I was with ASUS Striker on air, under cascade and under LN2 and I encode TOO many problems from it - freezes just like that, etc under LN2....
If ABIT IN9 does the same, I'll test EVGA too.....IF EVGA does the same, then it will DEFFINATELY be a i680 chipset problem......

Very nice Hipro, 3-2-2 timings are seriously low! Funny thing is I recently got a set of Corsair 8000UL off ebay too (still haven't arrived tho :( ) Hopefully when they come I'll give them a spin see if I can get anywhere close to you :D I'm thinking tho I may pursue the big 1:1 speeds and see where that gets me, something fast at 4-4-4 ;)

Could someone with a QX6700 on this board lower the multiplier to 9 or 8 and test if all 4 cores respond to the change (you will need CPUz 1.33 for this)

For the time been, I'm running stock heatsinks, etc., with a fan over NB....
I did some mods though with pins on the trimmers to do/undo them easily and see how it performs with/without......
I'm testing some VGTLRef mods right now to see if I could get some more fsb out of this QUAD....;)

Still nobody an idea for nB and SB temps????

My NB and SB temps hover around 30C idle. I pulled the factory heat pipes and re-applied with AS5. I wanted to put a better fan on both, but my 8800GTS comes too close to one, and my Thermalright Ultra-120 is about 2mm too low to allow me to get a fan on it correctly.

up to 1.7250 eratic behaviour some good some bad and some voltages will not boot at all. What I mean is that there is no sign of the CPU clearly indicating higher or lower setting at this FSB it just crashes sooner or later.

The same from ,15250 to 1.650v

But I guess its the FSB.

I will try 440 and will post findings later but I am afraid that my CPU is maxing out at around 3.8Ghz so we will see.

yes i 've a diff mobo but 440 and over has proven to me to be a real :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: on 8x or over on air.

have you tried 437.5 x 8(1750fsb)? it is the highest stable fsb and cpu speed combo for me. 3.5ghz

but the gains in bandwidth over 411 x 9 are negligible to zero...do you notice a ram bandwidth drop at 425fsb?

you have certainly pushed your cpu volts way past anything i have tried.....and for 100mhz????????????cpu?

i'd be a bit wary of wobbly voltage at those extreme upper levels for any period of time.

but if you can get 3.8ish stable power to you :) i have booted into windows at 3.8 at 1.6xx..cant remember exactly the voltage but it wasnt stable at all.

i reckon 424x9 would be worth a try....but i'm not happy with voltages over 1.6v cpu without betta cooling.

Adamsleath, I am watercooling everything but the SB and PWMs so my CPU temperatures are 39C idle at 1.625 and 46c load. I also tried 1.725v and it boots at 4ghz but its not stable.
I want to believe that with a new BIOS I could even stabilise it @ 3.9Ghz but that will be seen. At the moment its stable @ 3.7ghz fo sure. I have not tried playing with any other multi other than the default 9 of my E6600. Do you think a lower multi of 8 could help? I have not really explored the field with multis but I will try why not.

What pisses me off is that it is also stable @1.45v 3.6Ghz on AIR on P5WS64 Pro so I said what the hell only 100Mhz gain with watercooling? However on air it would not boot @ 4Ghz but could boot @ 3.8Ghz.
Anyway I hope new bios is here soon and it actually resolves some of the holes issues and ofc the mouse and the dreaded A0 post issue.

if you are watercooling the nb i'd go for it at 8x multi. you have great temps; makes me wish for water.:)

475x8+ i really dont know but i'd be interested to hear your results....or anything between 450-475x8 i spose.

i got to 470x7...reasonably stable....booted into windows at 480x7 not stable; needed 1.65+v on nb.

i have never gotten past 437.5x8 stable; and yet it's a rock at 3.7 9x???; 8x multi's might really suck..i dont know?

Guys beta5 wasn't supposed to make it out into the wild for a very simple reason, it was an immature BIOS.

I feel I have to point out a very important fact here, NONE of these beta BIOSes are for the public. None. That means when something goes wrong you don't get warranty because you're not supposed to have them. If your happy to risk it then go ahead and take your chances but for those would download, flash and then seem to be unimpressed, why are you surprised? It's a beta for a reason, because we're still trying to find all the bugs. Abit don't knock out about 12 different BIOSes in the space of a year for a board, they take their time and try to get it right. So for those of you who would rather not risk it - hold on and the PUBLIC release will be along shortly. In the mean time Beta6 is now sorted and does indeed have working upwards multipliers for the extreme editions cpus.

EDIT- Sorry guys, I've been informed that beta6 is to stay behind "closed doors" for the time being. Hopefully the public version will be along shortly though.

Glad 6 actually fixes the multi issue for the xtreme edition folks, I am having some great results with this board, got this orthos stable http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=167768 however i cannot use it as my 24/7 because during a 6 hour orthos run I was hitting 110-120C on the pwm's specifically #3, I am sure I am suffering from the "warp" in the board from my water block on the cpu.

Hopefully there will be some form of aftermarket heatsink/fan combo for this board, as I would buy it right away, currently using a cut piece of a copper heatsink from an old thermaltake volcano, and an 80mm fan on the pwm's. Seems to work a bit better than the aluminum one, but still would like to be under 100C for long term load for me to call it a stable 24/7.

Yes I'm thinking this too, in the beginning I was using the Intel stock cooler and always wondered why PWM 3 & 4 were hotter than the rest, a problem that only got worst with the attachment of my apogee. Once the whole warping topic came up it made perfect sense! The problem is, if you use thermal paste instead of the pad this problem will only just be worse for you :(

Afaik MIPS have some water coolings bits for it already, check earlier on, I'm sure someone put up some pics.
The cut up heatsink idea :D EXACTLY what I did, £5 off eBay solid copper 478 cooler, sliced off an end section and milled it a bit. Should have the photos up very soon, just waiting for Mk II to return from the workshop! I've actually bought some thermal pads for it rather than use a paste due to the warping issue. Alternatively you could try using a backing plate to "straighten out" the board.

MILLING? sissy, I broke out the hacksaw and the dremel, lol!

It is currently not attached, as my mobo is laying flat in my case, so laying on top, nothing holding it but the weight of the copper, and still using the balled up bubble gum thermal goo.

As I work on the design a bit I will add attaching holes, and will think about some sort of plate in the back, maybe one of the ATI mounting arms from my swiftech gpu blocks? Dunno, will definitely look into that when I get a bit more time.

Link to the thermal pads would be appreciated, also have you used them before? How is the thermal transfer through them?

I'm sure that Abit will market their copper pwm sink used on their new 650i board, and admit that in9's solution was badly designed-implemented.Ideally they should change the thermal solution on the new boards in production, and not void the warranty for expertly thermal-solution modded boards.

I also feel that beta 06 should come out, since its the first beta release with working multis, just to give the guys with extreme cpus an extreme board worth of Abits name.

Yeah, I noticed that, have been good to go for a couple of days now, so I am allright, I am trying to figure out how to grind a larger portion of the block so that a thin strip touches the PWM's but I have a larger chunk of copper for the PWM's to bleed through.

NOW........With only two sortcircuits with cables I got another 15 - 18MHz out of it....Benching at 380MHz...
With the VGTLRef Mods I'm up to 406MHz fsb with the same QUAD and 404MHz benchable.....:D

These were done with the BETA 6 Bios.....Keep in mind that it doesn't YET unlock the multies of a QUAD CPU.....Actually it unlocks only for CPU 1 and 2....CPU 3 and 4 are at x10 nomatter what.....

I'll be back with updates when I'll do the VTT (VFSB) mod too.....I hope to get another 10 - 15MHz fsb more.....I mean I wish too....:(

hmmm ok theres a few bugs t here that are still problems for a number of manufacturers. The Quad ready refers to the power side of things no the multiplier afaik, the rest...yeah you may have a point, tho I dunno theres alot of happy customers out there with this board :confused:

Keep in mind that I get the SAME CPU Score in 2k6 (+/-)bench as I get with the ASUS Striker mobo at 3850MHz and x11 multi.....I'll check Striker with Cpu-z V. 1.33 to see IF it fully unlocks the multies of all CPUs or not...:)

Hint: CPUz 1.35 is newer and also reports each core individually.

This QUAD benches 3D at 4GHz and needs about 1.53VCore (REAL) and 1.57VCore for 2k6 and CPU bench at 3900MHz...

and where is this VGTLRef mod ?

I haven't upload any mods of the mobo yet.....:)

well I am still waiting for my mobo

Beta .06 is much improved. I can adjust the multiplier on my X6800 and it actually works! COOL!!!
