UnOfficial Asus Rampage II Extreme Thread

First I like to mention sumthing. Im not sure if most of u know but when u install the drivers for this board there is sumthing missing. Cause once you install the drivers for this board the IDE controllers are missing and I just experience hicups n such with my dvd drives n such coz sum times it just takes too long to read and sumtimes i have to reboot it just to get it right.

But i kno this is a sorter like an overclock thread of this board or such but I'd like to help those that are having trouble or also rookies that also have problems as such as I'm dealing with right before that having trouble getting their dvd drives to read their disk even tho theres no scratch on the disk.

This is caused by JMicron JMB36X controller and the only way to get ur drive up and working up again is to go to device manager and pretend ur gonna update it but when u get to the point where it says browse from list. Click on that and then u shuld see IDE controller there. Click on that and it wuld use that then the JMB36X controller.

This wuld fix the drive read issues and such as sum people were having and I was having all this time when I got this board when i went on Raid with my hard drives..

But im glad this issue is fixed up for me but i wuld like to help those that have this board or ane other boards that have issues like this. :)

No worries :). That part shuld be on the first page or sumthing so if people do raid or sumthing they will follow that instructions in order to get their opitical drives doing their job as they suppose to

HT has a minimal impact on performance, so if you want you can disable it and drop your load temps a bit.

ouww.. that's normal temp for i7 @4.2Ghz ... maybe ambient temp is about 22'-25'C ...

i just know that HT has minimal impact for performance, maybe next time i'll try with HT off ... & get it Vcore lower than now ... :)

by the way how highest BCLK & Speed i7 920 with Rampage II Extreme with air cooling?
cos my friend said that the highest BCLK with air cooling can reach 215-220.. is that true .??? i have try to 210 .. & pass the test of Orthos & stable.. but in 215 is not stable ....

i'm curios how highest BCLK can reach with my CPU but in another case In my country ASUS especially his distributor is very worse in the service after sales, so I rather frighten of searching highest of BCLK

Hi I am using Corsair HX620W and 3*2GB G.Skill Pi Black DDR3-1600 RAM.
I am running at lower speeds than my rated clock speed.

Anyone else having the same problem pls post your RAM and PSU so that we can confirm that it is a MOBO problem.

Well I think 220 +/-2 or so is probably the absolute limit for this board. At around 222, you hit 4ghz qpi and that is pretty much the wall with the x58 chipset. If we had an option for a 12x multiplier instead of 18x for the qpi, we could probably push the bclk farther, but intel had issues with that so it wasn't put on the board. The timing codes on the dfi and evga are adjusted a little so they can boot around 230bclk, but they really aren't stable by any means. You'd be very lucky to get a stable 230bclk in spi 32m on those boards. So don't take it for granite going to 220, you'll be very lucky to get there if you do.

I cant see that this issue is caused by your ram.

I have two psus here, a tagan 900 and a galaxy DXX 850. either psu will run this board without any kind of cold boot problem, both will even run crossfire without problems.

My only issue [not really any issue, more about my expectations] seems to be a brick wall at 4.2 with ht on, but that in my case I think is the cpu needs to be sub zero. other than that the board seems to be very stable. as long as it will achieve whatever overclock I want it never crashes or ceases to boot.

In my opinion and experience so far, this x58 version is more consistant than my [three] rampage extreme x48 boards were. I had similar issues to what you are experiencing with those. and did wonder if it was to do with the power phases on the boards.
Its like if it were a car, its like the starter motor is faulty which would translate in computer terms to power phases or psu.
I know thats not a great analagy but kinda the way I think in terms of the issue when Ive had it with previous boards.
I have an asus commando that does a similar thing. I have to go through a ritual to get it to boot. I know the process so live with it but in your case [x58] and its cost its not acceptable and I know your frustration.:shakes:

I just got my Rampage Formula and everything is running fine except I have to drivers that are not loaded in the device manager. I searched a little and still came up with nothing. It is looking for the SM Bus Controller which is my chipset, correct? I have tried loading drivers from website but nothing changes. I am using all SATA drives. Everything is working that I know of. I have two 500gb Maxtors in Raid 0.

Hello everyone. I'm a little new to overclocking and am looking for a little advice/guidance. Been reading this forum over the last month and see a wide range of setting that are being used. Right now, i'm running a 920, with 6 gb ocz 12800 memory, air cooled with TRUE-120. I started by changing the blk to 180 and my voltage to 1.208v. I also changed my memory timing to 8-8-8-24 @ 1.65v. After running prime for only 5 minutes temps were already past 70C. Can anyone give me an idea of what's a safe range for my core temps? Also, should I make any adjustments to the settings I have to maximize performance while maintaining stabillity? Thanks in advance.

It's not bouncing "all over the place" lol. It's under load, look at the graph. Not constant load hence why the graph has up and down variations. ;)

Ok, ok, fine, I will have to find a way to get my hands on a different PSU just to rule this out. But you know what, I am not going to compare apples to oranges by buying a Silverstone Zeus or something with 95A single 12V rail. I will get the same PSU as the one I have here with 4 split rails (2x22A + 2x18A) and if that one bombs as well, then I'm back to pointing fingers at the board.

I see your point, I really do, but I cannot help but really doubt it and wonder why would the board be so finicky over the PSU when nothing else is, and I mean nothing. I had a severely overclocked GTX 280 SLI set up in this system and it still ran fine and the board is not? I say WTF to that and still blame it on faulty circuitry.

The really nasty thing, the one that really bugs me is that I did not have cold boot for the first two weeks of owning the board, then I got it, then I solved it, and then it came back about 1.5 months after I solved it, and now it is worse than ever...

Moreso, I decided to try something this morning where I left it running for a bit while it was hanging on DET DRAM (maybe 5 minutes), then powered the system down, and then back up, and it booted fine. I felt the board to the touch and it was warming up slowly during those 5 minutes. Sure as heck seems like something loosing contact on the board that recovers when the heat causes things to expand. But, I will post the results of trying the new PSU as soon as I have them.

Your Vcore is already pretty low, so you are good there. The temps are safe albeit high for 3.8GHz with such a low voltage. It is safe to run this chip up to 95C but if you can stay well below that it is better. Tjmax is 100C.

Not much you can do I think in terms of tweaking the settings more...

He is running 3780, at 1.2v at 68-72c under load and he is worried? there are people out there who are getting 80's+ on the stock cooler at stock settings. he has absolutely nothing to worry about on his oc. matter of fact i have a thermalright using push/pull and under load at 3800/1.325v I get 81c on my highest core. from all that I have read this is the expected range.

mtenda isnt running under load in that screen as far as I can see. minimum temps say so, max temps are like 4c over minimum, which would be when he started cpuz.

ggrrr after all that.:shrug: Ill wait till my cascade is repaired if no vast improvements, I think I will be changing too. I just need a board to bench with, this one is stable at moderate clocks but not really what im looking for in terms of high numbers.

Realtemp says 98.7% load, and he has a green (running) prime 95 icon in the system tray. He must have opened realtemp after prime95 was already running. This would explain the low delta between min and max temp. However, at 5mins recorded load, I might assume the temps will get higher though........

yep, my mistake crazyea, i didnt look close enough.

not gotten rid of it.. just laying in the ground atm.
was skeptical going to dfi after the x48 lt saga with my hd3870x2 rog

but so far hmm seems to be good.rams working fine .
vtt so far dropped it down to 1.4v for uncore 4000mhz .. testing it atm.

anyway the ram was worth almost double the mobo..
so ram decides which mobo..

I'm almost ready to switch off the R2E. Was considering the DFI, but I think I'll hang on till April/May for the new x58 stepping in hopes they bring some adjustments.

I think I have found out the solution already. Thanks to all those who helped.
The problem seemed to be coming from SATA Port 1. My DVD drive was
initially placed there. I heard about raptors having poor performance on that port and I suspected that the port could be the culprit so I changed my DVD drive to another port and the problem seems to have disappeared.

phew! took me almost a week to solve this problem.

anyway my bclk cannt seem to go higher than 195. I have tired all voltage settings and even used the lowest multiplier. It gets more unstable as I approach 195.

Start by reading Post #7.
It is a great starting point and will put most of your setting in order.
From there we can make suggestions on what might be causing the problem.
You should be able to get to the 200 bclk with not much problem.
