I just got my board back from RMA. I had to replace it, so I'm trying to figure out if I'll sell it or keep it for a project.
Question for you Ket! How is the bus OCing on the board? I never played around with it. I was thinking of getting an i3 2100/2120 and pushing it as far as it'll go and submit to HWbot. I think that'll set a record as there's 0 submissions for 2100 in most cases.
My powersupply died and killed my motherboard and CPU in the process. Now I got a new and better 850W OCZ ZX to replace the old one and I also got a new fresh MB and CPU. Now to the problem: I can't run both my memory sticks together. I've tried them both seperatly and they work just fine. With both inserted I get code 49 and no boot at all. Code 49 is not even listed in the manual. Does anyone know a solution?
Hi. This is my first post here. And I need some help or suggestion.
I have my 24/7 i5 rig OC to 4.6 with Extreme4 and I'm very happy with what I got. (list of components are in my sig)
Except the CPU temp....
My i5 is an average chip. Not great but not the worst... Costa Rica chip but I've managed to make it stable 4.6GHz @1.305v (fixed).
It boots up fine 5.0GHz@1.430v?
(of course it wasn't stable. I did this just for the curiosity if I could even boot it up. I wouldn't want 5GHz on fan cooling...)
It has been stable for everything I do (games, some video rendering) and also stable on Prime95 Blend (13+hours), IBT, LinX(AVX), 3DMark.
They all passes fine and stable.
But the CPU temp is I think too high for the Vcore I'm putting in.
In Prime95 Blend Test, my highest core temp reaches to 84c (always the 2 middle core gets hot and 2 outer core stays cool, delta4~10c)
All the core stays at 69c~75c 99% of time during the test but sometimes it spike to 84c.
In LinX(AVX), I've only run 3 times for now since it's so scary to see the temp (lol)... It gave me 88c max core temp...
I know I only have Hyper 212+ but even that, the CPU temp should be a bit lower than what I got.
The first time I've put this HSF on, there wasn't enough TIM on so it had even higher temp (88c in Prime95)
I'm pretty sure I got the HSF on right for this.
Also I only had AS5 with me (I have to order MX-4) but even before completely cured, the temp is still too high.
I've attached the BIOS and some stress test pictures.
Please let me know if anyone see my BIOS setting odd or suggestion for better settings to make it run a bit cooler.

Fixed or Offset voltage?
You are happy with only 2 minutes of stress testing? Put Prime 95 in Blend mode for at least 30-60min.
Bus adjustment has little to do with the board and is almost entirely up to the CPU itself. Plonk the CPU in, and see what it can do :up:
Make sure your CPU cooling isn't overly tightened to the board itself, and try a different kit of RAM. Its very likely the kit sustained some kind of damage as well given your last mainboard and CPU got fried by a bad PSU.
85-88C is perfectly normal when running IBT w\AVX and similar apps. I get about the same temps when testing a 2500k @ 4.7GHz 1.36v with a Hyper 212 Plus.

I'm glad to hear that.... I guess my chip reached the max temp for fan cooling I think.
Another 0.1GHz then it peaks at 90c area... But 4.6GHz is plenty for everything I do.
Also I took a side clear panel of my case off and put perforated mesh metal panel with 120mm intake fan.
It gave me 2c down on max temp. Prime95 max goes to 82c, avg stays around 67-74c now.
When I disabled "spread spectrum", I got exact 100BCLK in windows but the extra 0.02MHz needed extra +0.05v vcore to make it stable...
I guess 1.305 was the lowest possible stable voltage I could get.
So right now I'm at 1.310v (fixed, LLC2) @4.6GHz Prime95 stable so far for 6 hours.
If you want to get your CPU stable at a higher frequency, try reducing your memory clock (if its OCd that is). After testing I had to reduce my memory clock from 2133 to 1866 7-9-7 to be fully stable @ 4.7GHz. No amount of tweaking would get the system stable with the higher memory frequency :(
My RAM is at stock 1600 8-8-8-24 1.5v.
The system is stable so far @4.6. I think 4.6 is enough for what I do.
Since the higher RAM won't give me much for gaming and everyday use, I'm sticking w what I got (the most stable at stock anyway...)
Unless in the future that I have to open up and compress 100TB of WinRar or something lol, I'm OK with stock atm.
Run IBT w\AVX and your RAM at stock, then clock yur RAM to, say, 1866, then re-run IBT. You will notice a nice slashing in time it takes ;)
OK. I'll try that! err.. I've never OC my ram so I'll try tweaking some settings.
If you have some idea what the general safe start setting should be, please let me know....

Also they are 2x4gb so they won't OC like 2gb ones. well, that's what I heard.

I've managed to get 1866 9-9-9-25 1.5v in first try. :shocked:
I might be able to get better timings with higher voltage but for now I just wanted to see the difference.
I've run short tests using LinX(AVX) with 1M and ALL (P.Size 29485, Memory 6656) and SuperPi.

Unfortunately, due to the variability between individual hardware, there is no true across the board settings to abide by. For one thing, the ram timings that are advertised by G.Skill may not be the best settings for your specific hardware, and I don't understand why they include that info to begin with. I'm surprised/jealous that you are able to hit 4.6 ghz with a vCore at 1.305, and I don't see why you'd want to go any higher. A lot of people think the higher they can get their processing speed up to, the faster their system will run. I disagree with this strongly, as I've found my computer runs at its best at 4.4ghz all around, even though I know I can hit 5 ghz no problem. It's also a good way to ensure the longest possible lifespan of your processor.
Also, overclocking your ram is something that should be done with a lot of care and experience. It's kind of an art, because finding that sweet spot when you start raising the ram voltage can be a tiring process.

Thanks for the advise. I can OC more than 4.6 but it just gets way too hot even at 1.305v.
If I go more than 4.6 I get 90c+ in stress tests. I'm only on fan cooling so if I have to go more than this, I need to go water.
But 4.6 is enough for me right now and this is my 24/7 rig so I don't want to put stress anymore than it is.
I just copied someone else' 2133 setting and guess what... I went straight to CMOS reset button. lol
Seems like all case by case, chip by chip, system by system to find a good stable settings.
Prime95 36 min, 4800 1.336v rock solid, offset and LLC level 3.

I thought you have to run Prime95 Blend at least 10-12 hrs?
plus do some other stress tests (LinX AVX, OCCT, IBT, etc.) to make sure the system is stable?
Also idle state for long period and regular web browsing counts, too.
Some system are stable with maxed stress but crashes or freezes on idle or browsing internet.
At least I won't be satisfied until I clear all those as a 24/7 stable OC rig.
Vcore fixed = BSOD idle.
Offset + LLC3 no BSOD idle.
Games, Vantage, 3dmark11/06/05/03 no BSOD.

I was tweaking with memory timings and I got no post so I cleared CMOS and now I get dual-boot...
Does this mean I have to take out the battery to clear completely or re-install BIOS?
is there a way to recovery a UEFI from a bad flash?

Official 1.80 Bios wiped saved profiles for me. WTF? I thought they'd solved that - or is there something new which meant all profiles needed to be created a new?

Did you save the profiles with Overclock DNA? If you did, try to reload the profiles from OC DNA, reboot and load the profile from the EFI.
However, with <X48 chipsets, it was strongly recommended not to mix BIOS profiles. If you had a saved profile from BIOS A, flashed to BIOS B, it was recommended not use use the BIOS A profile under BIOS B. The reason being that you don't quite know how much changed between the BIOS updates.
Ket, has this changed with the EFI BIOS and Sandy Bridge. Can one utilize BIOS profiles created under one BIOS with a different BIOS?
