mm after some more testing i found out that the HT bus is the problem that is causing the raid controller to fail the init

1800mhz Ht default for the ph2 x4 940, raidcontroller has issue's and internal system reboots but it works after a while.

2000mhz Ht dafault for the ph2 x4 965, raidcontroller has more internal reboots and kinda looks like it gives up after like 6 reboots, controller never shows up.

i tried to manually underclock the Cpu mem controller and the Ht bus to 1800 on the 965 cpu , it sort of works as the problems same as the 940 come back but it sees the controller after a while , but when loading windows system locks up :(

i've informed areca also about this problem i hope they can do something with it.

also when i overclock the cpu mem controller of the 940 to 2000mhz +HT then it give's the same problem as the 965 so it isn't the cpu that is causing this. bios issue i guess

Hi, Hive:) ...I have the UT 790FX-M2R PHENOM 940 & ARECA 1231ML but have retired that system to a server system running 3/16/2009 "Beta" will try both Bios and see if I get the problem that you are experiencing:)
I have yet to have a single issue with my ARECA Controller on many D.F.I Board even the UT 790FX-M2R and I am one of the first few people to have this Motherboard before it was launched to market and it has been a wonderful board except for USB (SB600) Issues at Boot in DOS Programs for HDD Diagnostics..............thats about it!

Hit F9 (if you haven't already) and it's under CPU feature.
Needs to be set in HEX.I am not sure however if the BIOS from 8.20 (that I have) is setting it properly.
I'll check this one out,see if they fixed a few things.

I also dont have CPU-NB voltage on my bios (which Im sure i used too). when exactly are you supposed to hit F9? Also anyone got any comments on the PWM section of the M2RS? Im worried about how strong it is and also what temps I should keep the power section below.

Hitting F9 once in the BIOS bring up "advanced" mode -
a few extra settings become available.
The CPUNB VID is definitely gone in this (beta) BIOS for the non-BE CPU.
I went back to the official (8.20) one - seems to work
a lot better,especially with the new AOD version.

On the side note:I'd like to see some innovative design
(other then putting ION and P45 together on 1 board) from
one of my favourite companies.Need some ideas?

Uhmm i have looked into this. I have pressed F9 and activated the advanced mode but the only new option i have under CPU Feature is the: AMD Family 10h core Setting thats for setting 3 cores on a dual core.

Any updates ?

I tried that setting with my x3 710 (it has 3 settings,something like auto/0,1,2/0,1,3) and the only thing that it did was turning off 1 core -giving me
an X2 :(

The whole system was a lot less stable with the beta bios (freezing up),so I had to go back to the 8.20 - which is not bad.

The feature is made for X2's that only got one working core instead of four. But you did not see a option to set the NB Voltage ?

The stability of the beta bios was fine over here.

No I did not see it.

Sooo my intro to the forum. Hi!
I've got a few threads to dig through, including 56 pages of this one, and I've already seen some useful tidbits.
Haven't overclocked since my Barton days... don't know how much I'll get out of either of my Phenom's but heck I'll give it a shot!!

My sig will illustrate what I've got to work with: I got a Sapphire board that was (I didn't know at the time) a rebadged DFI board. I liked it so much I sought out a second (and this time found a DFI).
Now I have two to play with. The Sapphire is running the 0422 BIOS, and the DFI the 0706 (and I see above there's an 'alpha' 0727!).
I played around with both CPU's on both boards and some very basic overclocking, and interestingly the DFI board shows a little better performance than the Sapphire, which I put down to the BIOS.

I know I'm not going to break any records with either CPU I've got, but I'd like to give it the best possible chance.

And, down to my question at last:
With the boards being identical, has anyone managed to flash the newer DFI BIOS to a Sapphire board?
Or can help me do that?

I asked Sapphire whether they could make the newer BIOS available to Sapphire owners, and this was their response:

"FIRST"....Make a BOOTABLE FLASH DRIVE ..download ZIP Package extract contents to desktop. Send.... AWARD Flasher & R7LD706.BIN File to Flash Drive.... "DO NOT SEND"... AUTOEXEC.BAT...to Flash Drive! .

"2ND" .....Clear Cmos....Load Optimized Defaults ..Save/Exit

"3RD".....Boot From USB Flash Drive when You get to "DOS" type the Following

AWDFLASH.EXE R7LD706.BIN /CKS /SN /PY /CC /CD /CP /LD /QI /WB /CH /E

The /E Switch Command Brings you Back to DOS at which Time you will repeat this step a second time by typing the Above as stated for a second time & hit enter!

After you get back to DOS wait a few seconds and then REMOVE FLASH DRIVE.......POWER DOWN THE SYSTEM MANUALLY....."FULL" CLEAR CMOS FOR 15 MINUTES:yepp:

Thanks for the detailed response. I already had the boot drive, and had tried numerous times to get the BIOS to flash (as suggested, not using the autoexec but manually running the tool).
Now, that worked where previously I'd received errors.

I'd assumed that the new BIOS was looking for some kind of 'tag' on the existing BIOS to indicate if the machine was compatible or not.
I can only assume now that I was missing a command line switch.

Now just to eek the most out of the parts.

Out of curiosity, why running an older BIOS on your 'server' system? (You mention above that you're running 316 beta on the 790fx-m2r in a server capacity)

AS a point of interest it is always the best way to flash your BIOS by manual switching commands and using the /E Switch at the end so you can program it twice this way the code of previous bios is fully over written and leaves no chance of a dirty bios flash and the extra work always yields more favorable and more reliable results.

R-Gone showed me that trick about 4 years back and i have done it that way ever since and have never had a problem to date:up:

I'd have to agree, now that I've seen it in action, it's a good idea. I never use the 'autoexec.bat's that get provided if I can avoid it, preferring to run them myself, but adding the /E isn't something I'd considered before. Definitely part of the flashing arsenal now.

FWIW (and comments welcome if I'm right or wrong) the additional switch you've added there to the AWDFLASH command is /QI seems to have been the ingredient I was missing.
Again, it makes sense with hindsight. From the AWDFLASH /help:
QI: Qualify flash part number with source file
So basically don't check the motherboard to see if it's the right BIOS.

If only I still had a floppy drive in the house somewhere... I don't think I've owned (a functional) one since 2003. The last one I had got stripped to create an ad-hoc 3.5" tray for a laptop hdd in a desktop case.

Just wanted to let peeps know that the latest beta bios for the m2rsh allows AMD Overdrive (latest verison) to read the correct values for CPU-NB-VID, shown as 'NB VID'.

It would be great if drive strength settings for channel B would be fixed for 790FXB. They don't have any effect by now, which makes it pretty much a waste of time to tune them for channel A. Same goes for Command Rate, which seems to be bound to SPD.

So how does this board compair tot he Giga, MSI and Asus?, is this more a "budget" board then what they r? (atlthough im pretty sure this is the board that AMD themselves used it for there LHe runs if im not mistaken....thus the question, but i do know some boards just work better under cold then others is this why they used this board?) I just havnt heard very much hype about this board or seen many ppl recommend it

Just postin here to confirm that I have a Phenom II 965(c2) running on my DFI 790FX-M2RS. Running at 3.9GHz 1.55v IBT stable. I'm using the 0706 BIOS.

My M2RS kinda sucked, but all UTs rocked, some of them made noises, though..besides the obvious things better about SB750, M2R is still top notch.

Anyone ever tried (and ssucceeded) to run the UT 790FX-M2R at subzero temps? My board HATES anything below -15c (measured at the base of the cooler).

ALso wondering if there are some DFI 790X/790GX users running K8 chips in this thread as well;) I need some superpi efficiency numbers...
