He doesn't sound too impressed. The card seems to have problems clocking down in 2D. 50+ ?C in idle is quite high.
Im not sure GPU-z is compatible, it look like it make jump the GPu to 1000mhz instead of 304 in idle.. ( CCC show 45?C ) I dont speak about the temp, but about the clockspeed.
But even at 304 MHz, 45?C is quite high. If the card is only generating about 15W of heat on a 440 mm2 die, where is the problem?
probably power stats not working correctly, 1000mhz in idle will give you quite high temp. :p
Lack driver, it says that exists a problem between 2D and 3D modes, and so had to turn off the aero windows. He confirms that the GPU-Z is not working and maybe causing a problem (instability)
The guy sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing. The GPU-Z bug was fixed already.

From a famous e-tailer here in france.
290X is not so expensive, so don't be fooled by crazy pre-order prices :D
Nice price! :D

Amd failed on the cooler again :/
Wow 290x is shaping up to be a BEAST lets hope the real reviews are even better numbers !!!
How about:
- AMD made quiet fan profile for idle and load,
- AMD on-die temp sensor is not calibrated,
- someone is testing in the middle of desert mid-day,
- someone is testing in uATX case with no fans,
- and so on :D
Let's wait for reviews and then decide to buy stock or custom solution from AMD partners.
If the price is 550 dollar, honestly, what ever Nvidia does, their high end is going to be priced uncompetitively. Nvidia needs to discontinue their regular gtx 780 line and only sell OC editions at the same price as 290x, while additionally if Nvidia wants to price their gtx 780 ti at 650 or more, it better perform atleast 10 percent better.
However the noise and wattage concern me. Particularly if I want to overclock this for gaming.
I couldn't care less if it idles at 50C, it won't hurt anything doing so, and if it is because they make the fan barely spin at idle then that's just fine. I mean, really, who cares if it idles 35C or 50C? Load is where the temp matters more, and at idle silence is more important.
At the same time, part of me also doesn't care too much since I watercool anyway :p: And then in the grand scheme of things it really doesn't affect me at all as the odds of me buying a new card anytime soon is next to nothing as my 7950 is doing just fine :D
