The Official Dual Core Opteron Overclocking Thread

hey guys..

this is my first post here, as i just got my account activated.
i was wondering......

i need some help with my cooling issue.

=============SETUP=================
Opteron 165
Gigabyte GA-K8NXP-SLi
Kingston Value Ram
6600GT 128

i just installed my Opteron 165, aswell as my Coolermaster Hyper 48 onto my GA-K8NXP-SLi.

i would have went with the zalman 7700, but the DPS powerunit daughter card on the K8NXP-SLi limits the surrounding space, so i had to get this huge clunker of a HSF. (the thing is like 1 kilo almost) :slobber:

anyways..... i rewired the 4 wire PCM plug to feed the 4th wire with 12v feed from the 2nd wire, in order for the fan to spin at 3500 RPM. without this modification, it spins at 1800 rpm (lowest setting)

i have achieved a highest stable overclock of:
289mhz x 9 HTT = 2601.4 mhz
216 mhz RAM using divider (forget which divider value)
1.425 vcore
load temp with stable Prime95 x 2 running at 64'C

now with the following setup, my temps were 10'C lower.
282mhz x 9 HTT = 2543.0
211.9 mhz RAM using divider
1.375 vcore (just 0.025 over factory vcore :) )
load temp with stable Prime95 x 2 running at 54'C



what i dont understand is that my idle temps are pretty low (36/37'C) but then my load temps shoot up to really high temps. I applied AS5 and i'm thinking of reapplying it.

when i set the vcore to 1.5 to try 300mhz HTT, it shot up to 70'C.

and what bothers me even more is that at 1.375 volts, CPU-Z tells me its 1.425 or sometimes 1.45 on load. and the temps seem to me like they're a little too high. I'm using Sisoft Sandra and EasyTune5 (came with mobo) to test temps... MBM5 wont work worth a damn for me and sometimes gives me weird ratings of -78 and stuff.

any suggestions? ideas? im thinking of reapplying the AS5, this time with an ultra thin layer, using a razor... although my last layer was pretty darn good, i'd say.

forgot to mention. i'm running an 0530TPMW 165... aswell as Prime95 x 2 running on separate affinities, aswell as one on Small FFT's and one on Large FFT's to test my cheap value ram's stability... so far i've been impressed. The value ram runs at 220mhz @ 2.5-3-3-8 @ 1T on stock volts.

Anyone else got 0547TPMW? I need to make a decision real quick and trying to gather as much information as possible. Please share your results. Or anything.

I tried a 165 OEM from monarch, and had the same results as most of you.

0547 TPMW.

2x2500MHz prime95 stable on 1.425V. Close to 2600MHz if you push the voltage alot. 2x2500 does run very cool (40C on air), but I need more single-thread performance than what it could offer. I cant trade up my 3Ghz 146 for a 2500MHz CPU. Until the games start using multi-core more, i cant switch. So its off to Ebay with this one...

My Opteron Is still ubderway. I sould get it the 11e from this month.

I hope i can hit 2.8 thats my target right now. 2.8 @ 1.65v max @ Zalman 9500.

My last 4400+ only did 2650 max and a 165 did 2550 max @ 1.6v :\ SO i haven't got any luck so far. Still @ my venice that is running 2850 MHz.

I don't know what stepping i will get. Maybe it will be close to 055x ? Because i'm seing 0547 already. And my cpu will not arive @ the dealer for 2 weeks to come. I realy hope it will be a good one this time.

You would be getting much better results using a better mobo and cooling, also PSU make a big difference :)

Prime stable @ 2835 (9x315) now using 1.450v x 110%

MY cooling is SI120 w/nexus fan...

nice overclock...but I am not sure I could run that vcore..I am afraid for anything over 1.5vcore in bios..even 1.53v

I finally opened my momarch oem 0546 xpmw...not as impressed as my 165 which did 46%@1.35*1.10=1.485, bios vcore of 1.46(load was 46.47, PWC was 57)

I threw 170 in and quick testing...same vcore of 1.46v(20min after install)..locked winxp dual prime 95 at 2 hrs

I did try 1.375*110% first for 15min or so and I think this will hit 2.7..seems smoother

this am ...I decide to see if it would boot 2800..1.375*113%=1.55 or 1.53vcore...post and loads xp smoothly...I have found if this goes slowly or with hesitation ..it will sure crash Prime95...I doubt I will hit dual prime95 at this vcore but it was worth a quick see

I have to ask again, sorry for repeating myself. I have a 500W LEWICOM PSU which should be good.
I can now run my CPU (AMD 165) at 315x9, I can prime for ages one core at a time, but when I dual prime it restarts within seconds. I see on smartguardian that my 12V is 11.71V but when I prime 1 core it sinks to 11.58V, but when both cores are priming it sinks to 11.41V and restarts after some seconds. BTW the 3.3V is 3.15V while primng, is that bad too?
The CPU can handle dual prime at stock settings, then the 12V stays at 11.71V, but not when I am OC'ing the CPU.
So I am guessing the PSU is bad. Which PSU do you guys recommend for my system:

AMD 165 using 1.55V * 104%
DFI LP NF4-ULTRA
2x1GB OCZ PC3200 2-3-2-5
GW 7800gtx
Soundblaster 2 Audigy ZS

PC P&C, Fortran, or OCZ......

My TAGEN (see sig) seems to have excellent rails, also pot adjustable if you open it up though I have found no need to do so :)

I tried that with monarch..alot reports of 0530..in fact same day mine shipped someone else got a 0530..I got the 0546

I do not think it is a good 0546 either


anyway question if you are using a DFI NF4(UltraD/SLI DR) what did the 170 default vcore report

my opteron 165 defaults to 1.33 in bios, the 170 defaults to 1.38....so do we have less headroom to overclock the 170????:confused:

Better mobo ? Lol A8R-MVP aint good enough ? and last time i tested it on a DFI Ultra D that board sux even more :D

PSU = a Coolermaster realpower 550W and cooler is a Zalman 9500. Thats more than enough i see ppl hit 2.8- 2.9 on stock air. Don't want h2o anymore. And Prommy uses 2 much power ( Have had both prommy and H2o ).

DO NOT LOAD UP A BLANK ENTRY FROM DFI MOTHERBOARD BIOS CMOS RELOADED, UNLESS YOU SAVED YOUR SETTINGS INTO THAT ENTRY PREVIOUSLY!!!

Just as a word of warning to you. I was curious to see what settings were held in the blank entries in the BIOS when I bought my motherboard and I loaded the first one up just to see what it set. Well, it set the CPU voltage to 2.00V and also put in some very weird memory timings. After looking through the settings, I promptly chose the "Load Optmized Defaults" option to reset everything back to normal. If I rebooted with those blank settings I would have fried my CPU and possibily my memory.

DFI makes dangerous boards. I have killed 2x redline DC kid. With my ultra D. And the Expert was killing cpu's. And now bios settings are to high with chance of blowing up your hardware. This is a verry bad thing :'(

Well, you know what curiousity did to the cat...:stick:

Anybody know how well CCB1E stepping Opty 165's clock? There is a ton of them on eBay and they seem to be the only ones availible to me.
