its quite possible your chip can just not do 4.0 gig.........These quads are not like the c2d's, great chips do 4.0, good chips do 3.6, bad chips do less......

My chip is sort of a gem, running it 8x400 at stock volts (vid 1.225) across the board.....Unfortunately I can not keep it cool enough with my current equipment to push it further, and expect any longevity out of it. 8x450 for 3.6is a breeze save for temps but 9x450 is way to much heat for my taste.....

Most people on air only get 3.6 with the best air solutions, so if your on air that may be your problem, On water 4.0 might be attainable depending on your setup......

This might be caused by attempting to write to the BIOS with unstable settings. You should avoid doing that and I'd know, I used to do beta testing for Merlin. Older boards would have knocked out your bios chip. If you're uncertain of stability, which occurs rather often, you should perhaps first revert to factory settings and save your current OC in a profile.
And don't use profiles when you updated or downgraded your bios version. It doesn't work very well either.

Does anyone have an idea where to find a spare bios chip? Or is our bios chip not socketed?
Those chips are pretty mandatory when using modded bios binaries.

My Q6600 runs Ghz on 1.42Vcore , and 4.2Ghz on only 1.45Vcore ...
So I would doubt it becuase I already did a 4.2Ghz SuperPi bench with all AUTO (yes I know it's bad, but only that would boot... :p: ).

I use Everest Ultimate 4.20.1170. Are you running the registered version or trial version? I'm using registered non-trial version.

Super PI at 4.2g means just that you can do a pi at 4.2g, It DOES NOT mean your cpu can do 24/7 stable @ 4.2g............................

I would attempt to boot at your auto settings again and use every utility possible to get the settings used by auto, etc voltages, timings, ram speed, and whatever other settings then try to weed out what settings allowed you to get there..........

Or you can do it the process of elimination way, downclock cpu with multi's downclock ram, find max stable fsb of mobo, after that find max stable speed of cpu PI is not gonna tell you if your stable, most who can pass PI can not run 3d apps or prime, lastly throw the ram into equasion once you found the max stable mobo fsb and cpu clock, eachtime you add something to the equasion you will likely have to downclock a tad.................

funny how you say most who can pass PI can not run 3d apps or prime as I'm totally opposite. I can prime all day, run any program I want all day and my machine runs great but if I try PI at anything above 1m superpi will crash.

Then you would appear to have a memory issue or need to play with cpu pll or one of the NB settings ;) Id say your not 100% dialed in on the sweetspot of your ram or the chipset or the high FSB.....go check the prime stable threads, there are lots and lots that pass PI fine at insane speeds, Prime and 3d apps snap them back into reality in what the chips able to do 24/7 however

Just out of curiosity, slap a divider on your ram and downclock it and try something higher you failed PI at before like 8M If it still fails look to the chipset as the cause.....and tweak the voltage a little, could possibly be cpu pll volts also if its a GO chip.

I totally understand what you mean, but if you would think that my chip does 4Ghz on only 1.42Vcore, then I (!) know for sure it can be 24/7 stable on 4.2Ghz ...
For 24/7 use I go till 1.55Vcore, and for now I don't now wich speed I can get on that Vcore, but I know for 95% sure it's higher then 4.2Ghz though ;) .

That's what I've tried, I could get till 470 x 7 on all AUTO settings... This was Prime95 stable for 5-6 hours, but when I tried 475 x 7 it would fail within 2 min...
So I know for sure there's is something small that has to be tweaked a little, but what can I do if I don't can read out what the mobo AUTO picks for himself :p: .


BTW, I'm now on 3.8Ghz with 1.36Vcore and he's only 40°C stressed, with a ambient of 18°C, so temps are no problem... Even NB is 37°C stressed with 1.65V right now...

475 is pushing it with a quad, from what ive read 450 is tough for some on this particular board, it has a FSB wall with quads. Use a higher multi. CPU PLL Volts and NB is likely your culprit, FYI with auto it over volts both NB voltage adjustment and a few other things. That would be a place to start. Its real simple what auto picks, set the settings that booted for you in auto, reboot, go back in bios, check your hardware manager for voltages. Write them down, then manually set them, I can tell you this much, what you set them at and what they read in hardware monitor are 2 totally seperate things. Just keep adjusting them till you match them.

Wish i had your temps, I only need 1.325 for 3.6g but under load i'm right on the line damn near 70C, need to upgrade my water cooling before i can use it. Still on air.

I 2nd this statement. At 3.8 Ghz (or above) I can game, bench for quite some time. In fact I haven't had a crash yet but when I try to prime the system crashes almost instantly. Usually it crashes before I set a SPPrime instance to every core. Not even an increase in vcore by a whole lot helps. I just cannot get it stable above 3.7ghz.

I could run 3.6 ghz at stock vcore while I need 1.41v vcore for 3.7 ghz. But even 1.6v makes one bit of difference and this is without attempting a high FSB (450+).
I'll post my bios settings when I'm back home. I'm at work now.

Have anyone noticed that when changing usb legacy support to auto from enabled
that pc hangs before loading windows and then it cannot boot after restart and need cmos?

Sounds like it's a board thing. I would relax the board timings and try again. Disable transaction booster and set to 2-3 just to see if it is stable.

Okay, fast fast my problem once more.
I tried the same voltages you guys gave me but instead off 9 x 468 I tried 9 x 445. And it booted into Vista; I could run everything, but Prime95 freezed the system after 2 min of stressing...

I'm 1-4 stable. No crashes, etc. Since those are the "hardest" to pass then I'd consider myself good to go. I don't really care about superpi as it seems it's really only used as a benchmark.

Also, you should be able to bring your RAM voltage down with those stix. Are they Ballistic?

With DRAM Static Read Control: DISABLED, Ai Clock Twister : light, Transaction Booster : DISABLED 1-2 if you boot and it's stable you know it was the board having trouble. Then you can worry about tightening the board latency and getting better clock for clock performance out of it. At least that's how I got to the higher FSB.

Set Relax level to 3 with a tad more northbridge voltage, no cigar. It crashes very soon in the same way at 1.41v to 1.47v. Didn't try higher as I'm never going to run it like that.

I can boot and work with my Quad at 475 FSB even with Performance level 8 (Disabled 0) but it requires some high voltage on the northbridge... Here a screen I took lately :

I think I was using 1,72V on the northbridge to acheive that and it wasn't stable (My PC froze after like 15 mins of regular chatting or internet usage)

About the ram, indeed they are Crucial Ballistix, I wanted to make sure it wasn't them holding me back, so realy relax timings with relative high VDimm would exclude that :) .

just a quick q. would it be worth constructing a back plate from plexi glass for the waterblock (d-tek fuzion)? i notice that the motherboard bows a bit. also, would it help to lap the waterblock after ive already lapped the cpu?

i know these seem like stupid questions where the answer is yes, but i want some real world experience telling me yes and what i could possibly expect.

For me it made a difference of 3-4°C on load with my quad...
I lapped the Fusion till grit 2000 and then polished it with thoothpaste and ketchup.

Yeah that works :p: . Also I applied a washer between the 2 black plastic holders of the Fusion, so there's no more leakage from intake to outtake without going trough the base... Also the nozzle's are good to use :) .

But I don't have them :( . Also my Q6600 is NOT lapped.
