yes thats what i meant, forced downgrade off the floppy, but i used usb instead, because i have no floppy drive.

it takes 2 seconds to create bootable usb. and then create autoexec.bat and place it with awdflash.exe and bios bin on the usb, and boot it from it and you should be fine. i dont think you could messed up anything, its pretty simple, i think its your usb. did you try a different usb stick?
look can u read my last post... and maybe you know what the hell is going on? :( i am f-u-c-k-e-n frustrating. took battery out, did not help, i used different ram, didnt help. could i fry mobo or sometin by raising nb to 1.4 and cpu vtt to 1.4 ?

nah i never did that before in my life. i always remove the battery from the mobo for 10 mins or so. how jumper looks? is it yellow on P5N32-E SLI PLUS ? i need to take it off and place somewhere else right? i heard about it but not sure.

i am lookin on internet, also it must be on P5N32-E SLI PLUS manual book.

allright did it once, but i did it kind a quickly, you know, unpluged from 1-2 pin and put on 2-3 pin, and still nothing.gonna try few times.

Just taking the battery out for ten minutes will not clear the cmos. It takes hours that way, depending on the board.
There is a jumper in between the right corner and at the end of the third pcie slot that needs to be moved over one pin location and then the board powered up. If you don't have the manual then download the manual from asus and look in there. It is labled on the board clrtc en. Once the board is powered up, enter the bios and shut down your system. Then place the jumper in default setting and power up to reconfigure your settings.

The 1002 and 1003 bios I believe are tailored and meant specifically for the 45nm chips. Most people I have seen with 65nm chips have the best luck with 801 and 803 and some with 901.

I just flashed my P5N32-E SLI PLUS bios to the 1003 version. Now I can't boot up, I get no video at all and my PC keeps restarting it self after about 4 seconds, over and over.

The flashin process went fine and gave no errors.

Is there anyway to recover from this ?

Yes
You have to truly clear the cmos chip with the jumper on the board per your manual or online manual at asus site.

I got it working finally. I did try to clear the cmos with jumper before posting here, several times, but that didn't do the trick for some reason.

Fortunately ASUS Support had the answer. I had to detach all components from the mobo and then start it with just CPU installed. After that I mounted all the components back, and my PC booted normally.

Never had that happen before when flashing bios.

This usually happens when jumping a few to many bios revisions from one flash to the other. What bios were you flashing from?

Seen this a couple days ago. I can confirm that any issues I had with settings being save are now fixed. I forgot to post about the problems I had with the 1003 and my 8400, every time I would change something it would save but then when I came back into the bios it would reset and I would have to reflash in order to change anything. After doing so I would always get a dialog before being able to boot that said " Romsip table update in progress ". All good now. There is also some new c1 stepping option that I am not sure what it is.

I had tried previously to flash my BIOS to support the 45 Nm CPU's..I could never get it to work....i was trying to flash to 1003...I forget the error, but I think it was something about downgrading....I ended up buying a new board.

Hello all.

It seems like there has been a lot of good work w/ new CPUs but I am still with the E6750.

I would comment on those having issues w/ stability. Use 801 Bios. Also, this board will be stable at very specific FSB settings. Even chaning 1 or 2 MHz can take you from a stable island to being unstable. It is allso very effected by the CPU in use.

W/ the E6750 I am at exactly 431 bus..not 430...not 432. x8 multiplier. I wish there was a way to use a different multiplier and get a higher DDR but that is not an option with the E6750.

Now...I need to go to 4GB RAM. I noticed that as Vista as grown and some games have become more complex that I actually top out the current 2GB leading to some games to close to desktop.

Do I need a different BIOS to go to 4GB? I heard of an 801 version from OCZ forum for that purpose. Any help would be great.

I hope this can be the final word on this MB.

If you look at my sig and prior posts you can see that I tested stable at 3.477 GHZ. However, Orthos and Prime 95 don't test your system at 100%. In fact, many times the test does not use more than 1mb of memory. I started using the sytem for more intensive games and it started to fall apart.

Regardless of what anyone else has stated, this board with the E6750 has to run at the BIOS setting 1.53125 VCore. Even that will not be 100%. I am at 1.5375 to get stable at 1732/866 for FSB. All other settings are the same. Upping the votage on the memory to 2.22 and the SB to 1.6 made no difference.

The other issue is the NB. The picture in my eirlier posts does not cool enough. I added a small fat to the NB and stability improved. After that, I swapped the NB and SB cooling.

My test included;

1798, 1780, 1770, 1760, 1754, 1752, 1748, 1740, 1738, 1736, and 1734. I can get into windows with P95 fail in 1-3 min with longet times at the lower MHz.

The system was fine until pushed at the old settings. Once the mem usage hit 98% for 2mb and CPU was 95% + it stated not to work. NB go too hot and not enough voltage to CPU. I now run at 1732 w/ 4mb and the different cooling. The bottom line is the cheaper NB chipset on the PLUS version is very limiting.

The only other person who ran a similar rig ended up at the exact same setting 1732 fsb so what does that tell you? I doubt that the NB can take 1.5v even with the best cooling. The CPU has hit 51c at max load for only a sec. It usualy sits at 44c.

Don't buy this board. It is too much work for too little gain. For the prior post, the SIIE is a totally different chipset so the settings I have are a good starting point but don't mean much.

I could not leave it alone.

I tried more runs and still no luck. Yes I can get into windows and even play games at much higer FSB and CPU speeds but not at 100% stable. I re-tested and 1730/865 is it. Other clocks close to this have run for up to 12 hours but they will fail at some point and it is not worth the risk since the top is 1736.

I did optimize the memory clocks and there is a great artical on anandtech about how hier FSB does not = better perfromance. I have the Patriot PC2-8500 PDC22GB 8500ELK 4x1GB with Vista 32. They tested these and they were about the 6th fastes DDR at the time. I am running 4 4 4 12 tRD=7 set manually in the BIOS. I made a mistake and had tRD = 6 and it still ran but it should need a tRD of 7. This gives a Trd = 16.18ms at 1:1 timing.

It may be disapointing to not run DDR1066 memory at that speed but what you get for using the better memory is lower latency, especially the tCL so that the Trd is minimized. This is what makes the memory perform in-sync with the CPU. DDR865 aint bad at tCL = 4.

The other 2 timings are of little or no use. 5:4 does no good. 3:2 tops out at 1600/1066 5 4 4 12 tRD = 5. This puts the memory at DDR 1066 2.3v but your CPU is at 3.2 GHz.

It is not an option to just pick your CPU speed 1730 and then pick your memory speed 1066. You can try but I have not found a "random" pairing that works. You can see in the BIOS that it will "suggest" a DDR speed when you set the CPU speed.

The memory I have in was supposed to be able to go as low as tCL = 3 for DDR800 but all I get is a long beep and no boot. You can try this all you want sice it still will boot into the BIOS.

The lesson to be learned here is that this board does not support a good clocking ration for CPUs limited to x8 such as my E6750. If you can go to x9 or x9.5 or if you have memory that can run tCL=3 there is more to be had.

Overall this is a cheap chip with a cheap board that I have provided an optimal "tune". This is a ton of perfromance for the $ but most will opt for some of the newer hardware. Many people spend a lot more for their stuff but don't know how to match the memory to the CPU to the MB.

If you want more, get the DFI UTx48-T2R or Asus Rampage Formula or EVGA 780i MB with the E8500. The up to x9.5 CPU w/ good memory will allow for the FSB to me opimised to run the memory as fast as possible (lowest Trd) at over 4GHz CPU speeds.

1201 BIOS tuning experience? (q6600)

Has anyone had any luck with the new 1401 bios?

I was able to get up to 8 x 425 = 3.4 GHz on the old 805 revision but the 1401 seems to be topping out at around 380 MHz FSB no matter what kind voltages and settings I throw at it (within reason of course). Also, for some reason half multipliers seem to have been disabled, which means that even if I could get it back up to 400 MHz FSB, I wouldn't be able to run at 7.5 x 400 = 3.0 GHz like I used to be able to do. For the moment I guess I will have to settle for 9 x 366 = 3.3GHz.

I got to fool around with my old board once again. This time it's paired with an e2160. It was acting all funny, BSODing randomly on vista64 booting. I removed one 2GB stick and suddenly no more BSOD:s. I installed 2*1GB and still no BSOD:s. I then went ahead with updating to 1401, but still BSOD:s with 2*2GB.

Then I tried OC:ing with 2*1GB. All went well, until i upped the fsb to 350 and the memory to 470. Then came the "Updating ROMsip table" and after that it booted a couple times, then completely dead. No beeps, no POST, no nothing. I mailed Asus already for RMA, but after a night's sleep with EVERYTHING disconnected it came back to life again. Now I'm running 9x333, just to be on the safe side. I fear that the "Updating ROMsip table" has something to do with this quirkyness. Maybe if you push the RAM too far, it corrupts the BIOS slowly and begins to behave very strangely.

Well anyways, if you think you have a dead board, give it one more try. Take out everything (I mean everything), including the battery, put the CMOS clear jumper on, and let it sit overnight on the table.


edit. I just repeated the no-post, no-video issue. I went from 333fsb to 366fsb, and got the "Updating ROMsip table". After that I could boot a couple of times, but then just complete blackness. I removed the CPU, fired it up, installed the CPU back and voilá! It works again. So the ROMsip table update process must be corrupted somehow. However I cannot continue this experiment any further, since I'm returning this PC to its owner.
