In theory, you are right, but as I said, there is a FSB problem that is due to the bios for this RD580 board being in their infancy. I'm not joking about the 40mm fan though, whether you OC or not, its definately a good idea. The heatpipe is great, but when you can lower the temp on your NB a good 10 degrees C for only 4 bucks, its a no brainer... Also, don't be afraid to raise the NB and HTT voltages by 0.1V or so. Just pay attention to your temps under full load, if you aren't comfortable with them, turn it back. Also, the 40mm fan should help to take care this. Lemme know when you get your board and I'll be happy to help you set things up the way you want.

I forgot to mention, this board should be good to 1200mhz on HTT from what people have said in other forums thus far. Right now I'm running 4x283, so perhaps 5x250 would work?

Could I ask a HUGE favor and ask that you load up the uguru program, open the voltage tab, and post a screenshot? That might be helpful to see how yours is different than mine. I notice that even though I set the 1.8V NB to 2.0V, I get like 1.96-1.98V. The same kind of thing happens with the HTT voltage as well. Perhaps yours is overvolting you like 0.025V instead of undervolting 0.025V.

You may want to try
At 217FSB change to dram333 / LDT800
At 257 FSB change to dram 266 / LDT400
If it hangs just reboot a couple of times.
That should take you to 300 Fsb easy.
By the way i don't really have a clue why it seems to works that way:)

Nope, my OC didn't get any better with those settings :(

Try ram at 3448 2t 0r 1T the other ram settings at AUTO
go up at 3 clicks on your FSB at a time - (odd numbers)
if it hangs just try and reboot at the same settings once or twice
Im really guessing here, that the board is just adjusting tha AUTO ram setings as you raise the FSB ?

nope ram is set at DDR266 with 2-3-2-6-1T timings at 2.6 volts memory with divider is at DDR362. Ram shouldnt be the problem, but, what the hey, I'll try 3-4-4-8 for fun lol.

I just got this board yesterday. Have yet to install it as I have a few downloads in queue right now that I'd like to finish up since I'll be nuking & paving my XP install and switching over to MCE2005. Running 1x X1900XTX for now, CF master card on the way. I have an Audigy 4 (PCI) and a Powercolor Theater 550 Pro (PCI-e x1). Setup in a Silverstone Temjin 7 with a Silverstone Zeus 650W PSU.
A few questions come to mind:
1) given the massive airflow onto the motherboard my case provides, would a fan placed directly on the PWM HS still be *necessary* for mild overclocks? (Opty 175 -> 2.6-2.8GHz, 2x 1GB Crucial Ballistix PC4000) Assume stock GPU cooling & Zalman 9500 for CPU.
2) how hard is it to run a PCI sound card with 2x X1900's in Crossfire?
3) has anyone tested the SATA RAID performance of this board's 2 controllers yet? I run 2 stipes (6 drives) so throughput is critical. I like that 4 ports are native from the ULI SB and the other 2, while on a Silicon Image controller, is at least given a PCI-e lane and is not bottlenecked by the PCI bus.
4) does anyone know if the Sil 3132 controller is BIOS-compatible with the older 3112 controller? It would be great not to have to rebuild my 1.28TB storage array after the nuke & pave.

There's some info re. stripe setup on the Abit-USA forum.
Seems that stripe size may be critical as some have reported corruption.

Yea I am in the same boat with my ASUS board. It's almost like you have to buy DFI now, if you want any help from the forums.

But is it THAT much better. Like 60 dollars better? I know abit has the HTT problems where you can go past ~283, but is there anything that makes it really worth the extra 60 bucks? If this DFI board has long-term stability issues like the older boards, then I'm not sure if its worth it... Seems all I need to OC better on this Abit mobo is a quality PSU, which I don't have...

The DFI has problems of its own. Read about it on dfi-street. The biggest problem I and a few others had with it is you can't shut it down without it auto turning back on.
