Now, there's a chance that the inq is misreading the specs, as the X1600xt already features a 256bit internal memory bus, but it's only connected to a 128bit external memory bus, but if they're right and they are switching to a 256bit external memory bus....

They had to re-do the memory controller for 512mb(the original model only supported 256), so it wouldn't have been difficult to switch to 256bit...

the ATi 256bit bus is internaly (in the gpu) working with 256bit but the bus so the actual communication or whatever u wana call it is stil 128bit.
i think a bit like what ATI says about their r520 wich is 512bit inside but only 256bit in real life performence.
wasnt the x1600 always able to handle 512Mb of memory?
btw it would b a real crappy thing todo vs their custoemrs if they would actualy change the bus from 128 to 256bit and stil keep the same name.
I wouldn't be so sure they had to change anything for the 512mb support...there's already 512mb X1300s out at market. I'm guessing it was just an ancouncement geared to cause talk about the 'new' X1600XTQuote:

I still don't understand the reason for 512mb of ram on low end cards. The gpu is still too slow to processor enuff info to saturate all that memory.
