dfi nf4 cold boot problem

Agree with you 100%, exactly what my findings showed, that voltage was not being applied to the RAM correctly at cold boot - remains at 2.7V. Unfortunately I just get stuck at that point - so I cannot measure how long it takes for the BIOS to apply the Vdimm voltage.

At least this is out in the open now, so DFI should be doing something about it.

When a board first boots it runs default speed to engage the video bios etc, then all overclocks are applied etc and you can enter cmos.Now, if the fsb and timings are applied before the voltage the board will cold boot. If you cold boot, measure how long the ram takes to recieve the voltage it needs, remember it should see it very close to the start of the boot cycle, if its a few seconds in there will be issues.

I hope this explains the main cause of cold boot issues, and why RMAing the ram is usually not the cure.
Remember the board overclocks the ram, it has to do it correctly for everything to go smoothly.


1 last point...why does TCCD not have this issue?

TCCD or TCC5 does not have this issue as the board is booting at 2.6V or so, many of the modules are able to cope with the fsb at this VDD.

Tried everything. New bios chips, different ram sticks etc. What would you suggest now? I think I'll RMA this board...Really frustrating :(

first cold boot problem.

went away for the w/e came back.....3 LED's, the usual story

cleared CMOS for ever, tried sticks in all sort of configurations and magically it booted one of the times, I think it was totally random, I am not sure anything I did made it work.

anyway I recently switched back to stock timigs and 3V vdimm on the 3.3V rail.............maybe a little too late

Almost same problem here:

I changed my mobo from MSI to DFI, succesfully booted one time.
changed some uncritical bios settings:
for ex. "first video card to PCIx", saved, tried a resart ---- nothing

X800XL in the first video slot - 3leds
X800XL in the second slot - 1led

no monitor signal.

It's strange that the system bootet up once, but since the bios changes no chance. Tried cmos clear over night and only one Ram in the orange slot.
Still no go. I even tried my friend's RAM - still no boot

THE VIDEO CARD and all other components are OK, I tried the card + the other stuff in other systems - worked
Don't understand why my DFI SLI-DR doesn't like them anymore.

System:
AMD Athlon64 3200+ Winchester CBBHD0448TPMW
DFI SLI-DR (BIOS - don't know, it's the one that the board came with) R:AA0
Twinmos Twister Pro TCCD 2x512MB (only 1 stick in the upper orange slot)
Enermax 480W

has anyone found a solution to this problem yet that works every time my board has it bad!! With one dimm no probs with two no way!! But it has worked fine for weeks so I dont know what has happened. Test one dimm on its own fine - IE notthe memory!!!

Try to flash the bios to 615 series and the latest. It cure my cold boot. I also read from this forum that 510-2Fix also can fix the cold boot. I did not try 510-2Fix, so I dare not to comment on this. But Bios 615, 618, 702 and 704 had cured my cold boot.

I hope your right it has worked for you, but dont hold ya breath. I have thought many times that a bios flash had cured it, only to find weeks later its back.

Yeah non of those bios flashes have worked for me!!!

I had the same memory and mobo and had the same problem but like an ameture I turned up the voltage on the ddr booster while the system was doing its beeps, then it booted after restarting and I didn't have any problems after that. With a 10x multi worth crap how can you overclock an amd chip when your mem is maxed out at 260.

Also to let you all know I tested this memory on a MAX3 and had absolutely no problems at all.

If any of you are getting succesful overclocks over 270 with a 10x multi please let me know what bios you are using.

Now one stick wont boot. Are DFI doing anything about these problems?

My board will not evan boot with one stick now!!! THESE BOARDS ARE A JOKE!!!! I am well anouyed DFI SORT IT OUT NOW!!! I am RMA-ing this piece of stool

cause right now im blamming DFI because for me its de 5v rail the one thats giving cold boot, cause apparently it only happens when you use the 3.3v+ option..

for me it began just the same way as you men.. i change my 3200 winchester for a 3200 venice, and after that the long beep and the 3 leds on..
so i thought ram dead.. i wait a week then i read some post here that booting the system with different ram and then install the "death" and voila my ram works perfectly again.. i own a pair of mushkin CH-5 3500 1gb sticks, and now after several research the only thing that is working for me to avoid cold boots, its to after the system is off, also turn off and on again my psu, and everything works like a charma again. :rolleyes: ...

but now im really hating this lanpartys that all its bugs are driving me mad..

Statistically DFI doesnt care.

In the manual it says enabling the 4v jumper can cause damage to your components, they werent joking, and it does.

Im currently thinking about getting an abit an8 sli, but im making damn sure i find out the problems with that board before i hop on the train to another nightmare in geekland.

Nonsence theres plenty of ppl with problems that havent used the 4v jumper. The 4v jumper was a theory, like the many that seem to float about. A theory that has been proved wrong with ppl having failures using jumper trick.
I have never used the 4v jumper (only jumper trick)I now cant turn my system off, if I do I have to wait 24hour and then mess about for half hour to get it to boot.

This IMHO is a hardware issue and will not be sorted with bios release, look how many bios have been written already

The particular modules are OCZ pv4000 VX, this is my third set.

The possibility to damage your on-hand DDR modules might be the misuse of JP17 jumper, the jumper sets at 2-3 to get 5V power rail to provide higher voltage onto DRAMs. But would harmfully while certain DRAMs only support 2.6~2.9V VDIMM as standard spec. If your on-hand motherboard has settled JP17 on 1-2 as default but still damage DDR modules, please contact your dealer and the nearest distributor for RMA service.

I think you misunderstand the problem, the board is DAMAGING memory modules.



Adding more vdimm will void the warranty, and likely damage the the memory further.

Hello my motherboard has ruined 4 sticks of OCZ VX memory now, I am wondering if there is a known fix for this widely documented problem.



My system exhibits 3 led's and hangs upon a complete power off, once booted and running the system is stable, and performance is excellent, however, if the system is completely powered off via the power button or the psu is unplugged, the system hangs, and the only way to get it to post again is off of the one "good stick" undamaged module.



I may not be able to respond to this letter immediately because at best my computer locks and hangs so often.



I have new memory from ocz coming however I am afraid to put it into the board as it will likely kill this memory too.



my compoenents are as so:



600w enermax sli certified psu

athlon 3000+ processor

maxtor sata 300 gig drive

2 x 80 gig sata maxtor in raid 0 via nforce

7800gtx vidcard

Haha i havent been over to DFI Street in awhile and it looks like the new bios is eating CPU's now too. HAHAHA im so going to sell this board now, i have an X2 4400 on order and theres no way i trust this mobo to run it.

after all is said and done, DFI made a valiant attempt to make the ultimate motherboard, but ultimately cost alot of people and companies, headaches, time and money.

then did jack squat about it.

I dunno if I have good luck or a good board but I have had my DFI since it came out and haven't had any cold boot problems and it hasn't killed any RAM. I use the 4vdimm jumper and have switched it a ton of times. I also use 3.5v 24/7, no issues at all. Who knows though, I might be posting here next week with dead RAM or cold boot heh. :)

Whether or not you have issues will depend on your DFI NF4 board and the BIOS you choose to run.

I suggest you purchase the PC3200 Gold. This is new "BH5" UTT, will run 2-2-2 timings at 200mhz with 2.8v and of course higher with more voltage. It has a great track record on the DFI NF4 boards. Cold boot issues and failures are almost unheard of and the price is still very good.
