They are just very well tuned for water cooling and high restriction. In the operating range, the DDC3.25 produces around 30% more pressure than a D5, and its about half the size. To top it off, it consumes and dumps less heat into the loop.
The D5 still has the reliability crown and plenty of pump, but when splitting hairs as we normally do in water cooling...the DDC is tuned slightly better, especially after adding tops.

Someone would have to create an aftermarket impeller to really make the D5 motor work substantially better than it comes in stock form.
The D5 is a good pump though, I've had up to three in a single system(I still have one), I just don't like the bulk and have slowly migrated to the DDC side.

Just an FYI... the Gigabyte UD7 has two PWM headers and the Asus Rampage III Extreme has 7. In case anyone was wondering. :)

Actually, you're spot on... there are 7, every fan header on the board is PWM.
Yet, maybe he cares to share his insight here.
When I asked if this pump was closer to either MCP 355 or DDC 3.25, he said
p/n is MCP 35X. :D
Induction leads me to believe that perhaps similar design flaws have been taken
into account then.:shrug:
If so, and this pump has increased reliability over DDC3.25 - but not due to PWM control and lower rpm due to it - I shall
repent for mine top trashing :p: :D
Well, the 3.1 and 3.2 shared the exact same PCB when they came out, the only difference was a blob of solder. The 3.1 now shares the same PCB as the 3.25, the only difference is the programming on the control chip. If I had to guess, I'd say the difference between the PWM and the 3.1/3.15/3.25 is the programming on the chip.
Please understand that I wish to gather as much info on the pumps reliability as possible.
There are couple of reasons for that. Eg., I leave my premises for a week or two and leave PC turned on crunching.
Burnt plastic in that case is a nasty thing to happen. More importantly, if I import the pump from the
States, the shipping costs back would be massive. And I mean MASSIVE! Probably somewhere near
the point where you can state with utmost certainty that buying a new pump is a sane thing to do...
Luckily I have always liked EK tops over XSPC's :D
I asked Stephen not to go surfing today, and do some pump top testing instead. He wasn't too happy, as there was some nice swell this morning; "too bad dude, business first I said".
The minute he got busy testing I sneaked out of the office to go check out the surf for myself. Ahh, it's good to be a boss :D
J/K of course, as other than the internet, we don't surf at Swiftech.
So here are our pump top test results. I'm sure Skinnee will do some of his own too very soon.
Gabe: can you confirm or deny, if this PWM splitter can be used to power two 35X pumps from one motherboard PWM fan connector? From the looks of it it draws actual power directly from PSU 4pin molex, and just reports rpm tach to motherboard / gets pwm regulation from it ..
Really Nice results and of the big 2-3 tops and really your not gonna see a difference at under 2 lpm and besides I actually like the Look of the top, smoothly angular if that makes sense. Not just a block. reminds me of Stealth planes for some reason.
But I'm serious tweaked at the cost of getting a 1/4" BSP 19 TPI tap and 11.8mm Drill Bit in Toronto/Canada apparently 1 place sells em ... for $50 plus shipping. The bit I haven't even found , so in the end $120 to tap 2 holes in the lids of those Res's. I might just chuck em and use the koolance res's I have coming instead of rma'ing it . I lose direct attach but I'm close to my limit on this build I Double bought Pumps don't ya know :ROTF:
Gabe seriously consider that for the next batch of res tops. Then I can just wait and buy those to install my fill lines.

There's a 1 TPI difference between 1/4" BSPP and 1/4" NPSM, so the standard is close enough (and the threaded portion of barbs short enough) to where 1/4" BSPP threaded barbs work fine. Swiftech used 1/4" NPSM on a lot of their products and I've never had any problems with 1/4" BSPP fittings not threading in (Swiftech and their o-ring recesses are a different issue).

I like the fact that it has PWM, but it has to have a 4 pin connection on the mobo right?
I'll be adding this to my current setup of a D5 w/EK top, cpu block, board block, and two gpu blocks, and two PA120's; will I see any improvement over adding a second 655 w/top?
It doesn't have to. You have molex for power and the PWM plug for tach and control.
