I cant find the post where i read it but i'll say it again anyway..
If you have a 64bit OS running. Google the newer client that supports x64 instructions. Your PPD will go through the roof in comparison.
Im attaching a Picture.
What the picture shows:
Single slow system running day one, Both My e8400 and dual 2.4Ghz Xeon (HT ON) running on day 2. BAck to single system day 3, Back to both systems day 4. Then it gets interesting. I install the 64bit client on my e8400 and my points sky rocket!
the best clients are here
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php
and the 64 bit windows client realy makes a huge diffence compared to the standard client from the WCG homepage.
btw, im bidding on some old servers on ebay dual xeons ( i have a plan for later on anyways) , and i am talking to my school about 20-25 machines that i might be able to borrow for the week, no idea about specs though.
any advice about OS, i have to set all machines up (they are clean)
i have acces to msdn so any windows version or should i go with linux (never tried it) ??
what will give the most ppd for wcg ?
I thought Boinc(64bit) already supported it but it was up to the work units to be x64. ???
The 64 bit client benchmarks higher and it's a little more efficient. It's worth an extra ~10% in ppd.
I´m in.
Up and running.
Welcome to the team.
I've already started crunching pretty efficiently - just broke 100,000 points yesterday! Hey, this is kinda fun!

I am building another i7 rig, I should have it online, overclocked and crunching by the end of the week :)
Howdy!
Similar story here...I'd been lurking in the XS LC forums because I'm considering installing a WC loop; I got the Movieman e-mail and started reading up on WCG/BOINC. Well, the more I read, the more I  !
So I went to the shed and pulled out all the old PCs that have been sitting in there (for who knows how long) and managed to piece together two systems that are now up and crunch'n. While they are by no means "Xtreme" ( a P4 and a K8), they have managed to post some validated results in the short time they've been online. I'm now officially hooked.
There's probably not a lot of folks around here who have a bunch of old components lying around in a shed or a garage gathering dust. In fact I'm certain I'm the only one.
But on the off chance you do - break 'em out, dust 'em off, and put 'em to work. It'll make you feel GOOD. I did for me!
Breathing life into that old hardware was XtremelyGratifying! Thanks Movieman!
Welcome to the team before you know it you will have that shed filled and be using it as a server room :D
It amazed me recently how many of these "old PC parts lying around" seemed to need this strange internet phenomenon called a "buy button" pressed repeatedly before they magically coalesced into viable crunching boxes :D
A window unit will cool that shed and it's crunchers well ;)
First off welcome! second off no way are you the only one with extra stuff lying around lol! this XS and a by-product of membership is alot of money spent on hardware, which collects up. I've just started to put together my old stuff lying around and they'll be crunching soon too.
Don't forget all of you new guys to add your thread total to the thread countdown from 1000 posted in this section. Thanks!
I just loaded the client on our Dual Opteran server. It is crucnhing now with 8 cores. This will be from now till May 8th. This is a full use server so, my office didn't want to keep it on a long time. We have more VM's migrated next month to this machine. Atleast it will have some time in to add to the cause.

I've got a question in reguards to using the video card to crunch also: How do I do that? I have an ATI Radeon HD 4850 in my home PC that might crank out something...
WCG does not use GPU power. It may in the future. You can crunch WCG using your CPU's power and GPUGrid or F@H with your GPU. Some people here do that.
Ah, roger that. Thanks for the quick reply.
Well, I might have something bigger then my Phenom II x4's. I just got off the phone with the owner of my company. He is going to try and do something for a 24/7 solution. I won't know till the end of the week. I was afraid to ask, and now I am glad I did.
... and you went about it the right way, too.
