Nice test.
I think gap between 750 and 920 would be wider, if used faster memory modules.
SPI 32M is quite disappointing here.

i5-750 is damn screaming fast for its price ($196 expected). Having reasonable performance advantage over PII-955 and also lesser power consumption it will give PII-955 to run for its money.

I doubt it will screw anyone since it was already known for ages. BTW, AMD also changes sockets sometimes.

Yes the turbo mode is quite useful(goes up to 3.2Ghz iirc).But many users won't stick with default clocks anyway and will OC their systems. Plus AMD will release the 3.4Ghz model within the same price range the 955 occupied and probably another 3.6Ghz model in Q4.These should be enough to battle most of the i5 range.

It all depends on what matters to you the most. What defines the biggest boost for you? Some boosts are "feature" boosts, like PCI-E over AGP, SATA over IDE, DDR2 over DDR, etc.. Some are sheer speed boosts, like going from a 500MHz P3 to a 2GHz AthlonXP, to a 3GHz AthlonX2, finally to a 4GHz Corei7. Some of us do not need those boosts, but some upgrade because those boosts are needed so badly, even if it's only for 1 favorite game.

SATA3 will be the "feature boost" next year, while USB3.0 will probably come the year after, in 2012, given the snail-pace progress of finalizing and approving specifications + delays.. and PCI-3.0 might come out sooner than that. We'll just be seeing 6-core 32nm processors or Clarkdale+IGP, etc.. I find the IGP part interesting as it might eventually lead to a new standard for 2D/low-3D hybrid graphics, mainly for power-saving features while the add-on GPU cards sit idle. The next "speed boost" for me would be at least 5GHz on air, using 12 threads while consuming less than 150W or so for the CPU. Right now, when most of us overclock our i7's to 4GHz, our CPU's eat around 200W under load, which is well over the 110-135W TDP. Add in 4GB sticks of 2500MHz 7-7-7 DDR3 that will eventually become cheap in 18 months or so. Everything's gonna be focused on SSD's anyways, like the shift from CRT's to expensive LCD's, from single AGP video card to expensive SLI, etc..

I think that pretty much settles it that not only far eastern etailers got these chips in stock. It's just US and europe are more strict with the NDA. :rolleyes:

At least it promises good for when the day for the meant-to-be-launch actually comes. Both Lynnfield and P55 motherboard supply seems to be healthy if there's signs of leakage from both far east and US a month beforehand.

For me, that just made i7 920 a much better chip for gaming... seems it beats out the i7 8xxx quite handily in games... those 20 lanes are going to choke lynnfield with the new GPU's coming out at high res, any xfire or sli set up... going to be cpu bottlenecked it seems, qpi ftw. Surprising how well amd's chips keep up as well, price perf wise.. definitely nice.

the thing about those 20 lanes is... for me i do NOT SLI or Xfire or anything i just buy a good card and keep it until it doesn't suit me anymore... and no single pci-e card will use all the 2.0 bandwidth just yet... maybe next gen (doubtful) or the next (gtx500 - might but i suspect the next is truly when we'll see a single 2.0 slot maxed out) and by this time i'll need to upgrade my processor...

lynnfield would have been great if it game out at the same time as nehalem... but it didn't :(
