AMD/ATi HD4850/4870 Fan Fix!

ive given up on modding the bios... i've tried rbe1.12 and found clocks that are stable then not stable... infuriating...

other people might have better luck, but as far as i'm concearned xMrBunglex is right...

there have been changes to the way these cards are coded(@bios and driver lvl). the next official driver for these 4870's will hopefully present us with a stable gpu under extreme loads...

ie FurMark... which works when it feels like it atm @high clocks... i hear ati are working on a new opengl driver...

I've done both fixes, bios works better for the fan by far but gives overdrive some quirks.

Okay, but I can't use this past 790MHz as Overdrive kicks in, and I need Overdrive for the fan adjustment? What now then, other than BIOS flash?

I found disabling Overdrive didn't affect the profile fan speed settings. So try applying the clock tool clocks, then loading the profile with Overdrive disabled ( <Property name="OverclockEnabledProperty" value="False" />)

Some other guy suggested that at the 4870 overclocking thread, but it doesn't work. I set the clock speeds and when I load my profile (in which the clocks are deleted) nothing happens and the fan doesn't speed up.

I set my fans @ 40&#37; and it's loud as hell!!! Had to go down to 30% which is ok, idles @ 52c.

Yeah, I would rather sacrifice a LITTLE bit of more noise rather than 10C hotter :)

Thanks for this. I just got my 4870 today and my temps were at 81c under full load. The fan fix (40%) dropped my full load temps to 60c. This isn't too load for me considering the card that I replaced was a 2900pro. To me there is very little noise difference between the default fan speed and the 40% speed.

so is there a good fanfix BIOS out yet? i never considered the CCC profile method as anything more than a temporary fix. i used RBE to make a fanfix BIOS but i'm not sure if it's trustworthy or not. i haven't tried to flash it yet.

does anyone know how to make separate profile for 2 separate cards? (Xfire)

just got my second card but havent put it in yet because i hear you need to make fan fixes for each card.....

About the fan, I can't tell you because I use water, but I can tell you that modified clocks for my 4870 are working perfectly. Go for it, you can always revert back to the original BIOS. Don't forget to make a backup first.

set the fan to 35% for idle and 45% for 3d/oc

at 45% i can barely notice the card in the case, anything over 50% however is damn loud.

i set mine within the bios though with tmin set to 40% fan

the card idles around 45C and dont go over 55C during shader heavy games

at 100% this sucker sounds like a 92mm tornado with no real benefit in cooling over lower settings

you will need to flash with bios, use gpuz to save bios, then edit the fan settings.

dont bother with voltages in bios, it wont do anything from what others have said and tested.

use amd clock tool to oc.

it's still a round about way of doing things until more utils come out that support our cards

is there an easier, more permanent fan solution in driver 8.7? I'm scared about the bios flash everyone is doing for the Asus bios, I have a Visiontek card and don't want to void my warranty

I was idling 78C, with fan set to 35% I now idle 50C, pretty much improvement. It's louder, but not too bad, but when I tried 45% it sounded like a blowdryer, and only went down to 48C.

HamTard, you won't void your VisionTek warranty if you flash the card back to its stock BIOS before returning it (assuming you ever have to return it).

What do these cards run the fan at by default? 10% at idle and 16% at load are some numbers I dug up, but I can't be too sure.

It's 10% idle at default, unsure about load.

I just set my fans to 40% all the time. I'm pretty sure it doesn't exceed 70C at load, it idles around 50-51C, and 40% is at an acceptable noise level. My room's ambient is ~30C, sometimes a tad higher.

I just installed Asus bios, problem solved.

I hear everyone seems to be able to get this little workaround to work for them, but I can't seem to get it to work.

I have tried several time and followed the directions exactly as directed, and nothing!

My card runs at 70-80c at idle. I was playing Crysis last night for about an hour, quit out of the game and my card was at 90c!

I have the Gigabyte HD 4870 x2/EVGA 680i mobo/Vista 64/6 Gigs of RAM and a case with 3 fans in it: 1 blowing directly at the two fans to my GPU.

Anyway.....the fans don't seem to change speed when I try this fix. I even bumped them up to an 80 value, and there is absolutely no audible or temperate change with my card.

Why me :(

have you tried catalyst 8.10? they have fan control.. or have you tried ATT?

I just bought the card, so I am assuming it has all the latest from ATI/AMD?
