Well I'm not much of an IQ (interpret that as you want :p:) guy but when I ran UT GOTY on my bro's 2400XT I have to say it looked way superior to my Geforce7 serie card. But GF7 is known to have relatively bad IQ anyways but GF8 has improved it and today there shouldn't be big enough difference for most people to make any difference. But back in the GF7 vs X19xx days ATI had a clear advantage.

The AA situation is definitely the million dollar question, but that's not why they named it the HD3x series.

They changed the series name because they added DX10.1, and to get away from the HD2900 name that has failure written all over by most customers. It's similar to how NVidia ran from the FX name.

Driver-wise, I'm going to stay out of that. Although I can say NVidia users have gotten a lot more than 7 drivers in 6 months. ;) I can also say that I have no problems at all with Vista Ultimate x64 and my 8800gtx.

IQ is definitely as important as frame rate, and on a technical level NVidia's this round has been proven superior. This is fact and nothing can change that as the AF algorithm is hard-programmed in. Now, going on preference you can say you prefer the ATi image, but going by facts it's proven nvidia does have the upper hand.

As for the 8800GT vs HD3xxx I think we all can agree, if ATi fixed their AA problems, we're going to have a war.

I really hope ATi have.

GF8 series technically has superior image quality to the R6xx. ;) It's not that noticeable, but technically the difference is in favor of the GF8. Even beyond3d stated this one. :D

During the GF7 days though, the difference was monsterous. The R580 was a monster, plain and simple.

Yet I'd like to point out about number of driver releases, NVIDIA's have had like 6 releases (+1 one leaked) during two months time now, 163.44, 163.67, 163.69, 163.71, 163.75, 163.76, 167.26. :)

If you'd also count BETAs and WHQL versions like different drivers it would be more too. xD

Im sorry , but didnt nvidia cheat in somef iq tests?

its allot easier for nvidia to release drivers cause there freeware , ati shall soon release open source driver goodness then we shall see :D

Looks good, above my expectation but the 86C temps were very high stock and did look as if they were idle temps .. ?
I can't access it again to look, only had one quick skim.

Now we just need ATI's card a for a head to head comparison. I think it'll be close but 55nm is a major point with power consumption, heat and overclocking headroom. I just hope there are none of the R600 driver issues this time around.

It's load temp in AtiTools. Still is a bit higher than I'd have expected though but we'll see when retail ones start hitting the market, I doubt I'd be seeing 86C though as winter's coming and running caseless and my 7900GTO stays like 36~37C idle and around 50C in a typical PC game and ~55C fully loaded.

So a pure marketing move is now considered running from the HD2900 name?
Then why didn't the use a different name for the Pro or GT?
AMD made a marketing decision with the original R600 that didn't leave them enough room for the refresh. Call it what you will but it makes a decent amount of sense to rename these new cards.

As for IQ, Nvidia has a small upper hand in the AF department and AMD has the upper hand in AA. I didn't realize that a tie is now somehow changed to Nvidia wins.

nah i remember an article proving it with like 8600's against 2600's or somthing , it had to do with hd? and there was a red car? i cant find the thread for the life of me

That was during the FX days, and mind you ATi got caught as well(UT2003 anyone? If you don't remember, google it). Infact, I seem to remember not all too long ago ATi's drivers actually detected if you were doing a mip-test on the image quality and actually upped the iq levels. A clever tester discovered it when they noticed the frame rate dropped when they ran the tester when it shouldn't have.

Also, what exactly do you mean NVidia's drivers are freeware... Both companies don't charge you for your drivers, you realize that right?

A market move, yes. It's considered smart business when you have a product line that flops to move away from that name as soon as humanly possible. They did they stick with the HD 2900 name for the pro? Simple, they're the same exact card, it's just ATi's way to sell the rest off.

As for the IQ, ATi(I will NEVER call the R600 amd's project) never had the upper hand in AA. They both only go up to 8x Multi-sampling, and both use almost identical multisampling algorithms. You can bring up the filters, but I'll simply remind you of the fact that it's known to actually lower image quality by a blurring of the image. This is well documented across the web.

Check the beyond3d article on the R600, and you'll find that even they will tell you the 8 series has better image quality on a technical level. Equal AA and Better AF = better image quality. :D

Amazing for its price, just amazing. If only they'd hurry up and release the next high-end beast! Considering the numbers this card is pulling, I can only imagine the ownage their new top card will come out with.

NVidia's still in the lead, they really don't have a reason to show their high-end yet. They can just sit and wait.
