Bah, I was thinking about picking one of these up with a 8800GTX, but I might need those slots. Any other, more compact aftermarket sinks coming out soon?Quote:

Kanten, with the enormous heat dump of an 8800GTX, I'd say the HR-03 Plus is a good buy, assuming you don't want to go SLI and/or have more than maybe one PCI card (assuming you have a fan on the HR-03 and have the fins oriented over the empty slots instead of behind the card). The size of this thing does present some practical orientation limits, as in your northbrige heatsink may impede mounting this heatsink over the back of the card, and for the other mounting orientation you pretty much chew up your adjacent PCI-E/PCI slots and are left with 2 free slots after installing a fan. I used a 92mmx38mm fan, btw.
With the size of the core, the power usage and the heat output of G80, your next best option is to go watercooling, not a more compact air cooler. :p: I suspect there'll be some nice dual slot solutions forthcoming, although I don't know how effective they'll be compared to Thermalright's offering. I'd like to see something with copper heatpipes/base, though.

Here's some pics mounted on a Leadtek 8800gts.
I cooled the hsi (until the replacement ships) with a copper monstersink ziptied around the pcb and some AS ceramique.
load temps dropped quite a bit and arctic silver is still setting in.
here are the pics. I mounted it upside down but I dont see a problem in temps. I didn't gain any mhz in o/c though :(
I mounted a 120mm Late Yoon fan with some zip ties. I must say it's a lot quieter now.

it measures exactly 3.5 in. from bottom of pcb to top of the 120mm fan. (stacked config)

Fanless HR-03 should still do better than stock under load, moreso if you have good overall case airflow. And IMO, SLI is pointless unless you game at very high resolutions (1920x1200 with lots of detail or 2560x1600). A single 8800GTX should see you through all current games fine. As for PCI slot availability, I'm not sure. If possible, you'd want to mount the HR-03 so the actual heatsink extended over the back of the video card to spare your PCI-E/PCI slots. If I were you, I'd just go for a 680i board if you're in the market for SLI, otherwise 965/975 is fine, or R600. NF7 isn't gonna be out for a while, I presume.Quote:

2. Which NB heatsink will have enough clearance for the HR-03 to get around.
its the angle, same concerns I had with the HR-03, some review pics looked like it was ready to fall off, but after fitting one myself and looking at it, its fine. Both HR-03 models are deceptively light.Quote:

Guys do you think it would matter if the heatsink was above the card? I mean isn't that how heatpipes work? My heatsink is actually under the card so the heatpipes are going backwards. I did it this way so the fan would cool the mem and vrm also. Another reason I mounted this way is if I mount above the card I think i won't be able to access my ram as easily and I swap ram a lot. I can say my ram overclock is actually worse after mounting the H3-03 plus. Those little memsinks don't do jack. I was playing Northern strike last night after mounting the cooler and the game was crashing to the desktop. Gpu temp was around 60c while playing. I lowered the mem clocks and it played fine. This didn't happen with the stock cooler. I'm thinking of going back to the stock cooler since I gained no o/c from this $50 cooler however my core temps during load are about 10c lower. Maybe if I vmod the card I can justify the cooler but right now my card is maxed out no matter what the temps are. Just needs more voltage at this point. Maybe I'll try mounting the cooler above the card and then add a 2nd 120mm fan to the bottom of the card so i can cool the mem and vrm. What are your thoughts?

I'm not sure what they're trying to achieve by demonstrating the HR-03s CAN be mounted oriented over the back of the card (read: the NB heatsink may give you clearance issues depending on its height) when you can't even enable SLI due to the sheer awkwardness of the heatsinks themselves. I mean, I guess if you had one of the really long flexible SLI bridges you could make it work with Legion's configuration, but I'm not sure. You wouldn't really come into clearance issues with the bottom of the case if you had the HR-03s mounted the other way--you just wouldn't be able to use two cards, and with a fan especially, you'd be eating up about 3 extra slots. I'm going to just come out and say this is not a well thought out solution for SLI/Crossfire due to NB clearance issues and the inability to use dual cards if you should choose to mount the HR-03 the other way.Quote:
