I called that cover "the tray". And taping it to the PCB seems a very good idea, I never thought of that :( That way the tray dosen't move and it's easier to apply pressure when lapping.

Btw, I wasn't thinking about taping the PCB and the cover, I was just thinking something more on the lines of painting a room (you know, you tape around every switch, so you don't drip to the plastic), in this case to keep the dust out of the bottom. Taping the PCB and cover together is an excelent idea, nontheless. I have to keep that in mind if I ever try lapping something hehe
Oh, just one more thing. I know this is not the best place, but I have a doubt (actually, two) about lapping not the CPU but the cooler: can you actually lap so much you cease to have full contact anymore (pieces simply too far appart)? And does laping involve loosing your cooler (not CPU, that was already covered) warranty? If not, I might just try it with a Sonic Tower. That 805 is hot as hell... (Although, the Ninja cooling my E6400... hmmm... Ok, I'm drooling already... lol)

Do coolers have a warranty? My Ultra-120 does not.
Anyway, it's like with the CPUs, they don't die out of nothing. If you kill a CPU due to heat or voltage, you won't get another one form RMA. If your heatpipes burst or you break them, you won't get a new one either. The risk is almost nonexistent. Only thing that can go wrong when lapping is when you forget to clean the copper and nickel dust from the lands and they get shorted; and we have lands covered with tray and duct tape.
You can only gain.

Here in Portugal, everything NEW sold to a consumer has a two-year minimum warranty "attached" to it. Only consumables (CDs, DVDs, batteries, etc.) have only six months. Oh, yeah, and food and such items, which have the expiration date as warranty (but those don't count :p:) So yeah, coolers DO have warranty, at least here in Portugal. And they are not treated as consumables, so it's at least two years.
You're right about this being xtremesystems.org, we're supposed not to care with warranty issues. However, it is still good to know where you stand in terms of warranty-voiding operations (you never know, it might just as well be covered). And, in my case, RMA not accepting stuff back would be the least of my problems... (Seriously, don't ask). Besides, I like to go easy on the modding/OCing/etc.

I think Petras Tech Shop has cpu lapping kits, although why don't go to car shop and buy your sandpaper yourself? that would probably cost you less (shipping etc.). I got my glass from old photo frame, I'm sure you have one :)Quote:

I had a small unframed mirror that I put on the kitchen counter for my 'flat base'. Some wet/dry sandpaper can be found in the autoparts store.

guys how do you apply even pressure over the whole cpu when sanding so that you dont get uneven spots while sanding, i used both hands on each side while sanding.
Just an idea, but every time I've sen my father using sandpaper, he'd wrap it around a block of... damn, how do you call it... the stuff corks are made of (that is, traditional ones, not the plastic ones that are used nowadays). Please feel free to fill this gap in my vocabulary.Quote:

I work with him often when I need money so desperately to take hard physical job, and I know that way of sanding.
You cant wrap the sandpaper around a block of cork, you have to place it on stable, flat surface - i.e. small glass sheet taped to the desk.
Using two hands to apply pressure is probably the best way. I did't tape sandpaper to the desk so I had to hold it with one hand and that left me only 5 fingers free, so I used two.
And Miguel, you didn't start any argument, it was just a misunderstanding between me and lawrywild. I see HermS understood me well, I'm Polish and English is not my native language, please take that into account. It's hard for me to precisely put what I mean into words.
Lapped my E6300 with 400, 800 and 1200 sandpaper. Temps lowered with 4 degrees Celsius. It's good right?

Interesting. I've always seen people actually grabbing the sandpaper when sanding, not grabbing the object to sand. You have way more experience on that than me, so I'll just step aside on this one :p:
About that 4ºC drop, that seems a very good improvement. C2Ds are already very cool when operating, so that's a great achievement. Man, I'm getting itchy already, I've got to try that thing...
Oh, btw, one thing I remembered: someone talked about using polisher instead of sandpaper. Are there any inconvenients to that approach? Thanks in advance for your comments.

Usually you would do taht this way, but it's not the case with CPUs or heatsinks. If you held the block wrapped in paper in hand, you wouldn't get flat surface - it would be curved, probably higher at the middle and lower at edges. Hand is just not that stable and steady, unless you're a Terminator.Quote:

And polisher is too fine to remove that nickel plating form IHS, it was used only to make a better mirror :) I'm not sure if using polisher is good for getting really flat surface.
Does perfect mirror give lower temps? And after lapping I've got some tiny little scratches. Anything to worry about? Might affect temps? Can they be removed with that metal polisher?

Mirror finish is not the objective to lapping, ending up with a perfectly flat surface is;)
The few scratches you see will be fine, thats what TIM is for, to fill in those little scratches.
The mirror finish doest not improve it any further. It's only because it looks awesome :) Ands its easy to do with a little metal polish. Takes max 5 mins when you are done with sandingQuote:
