I just sent Gigabyte a nasty-gram using their online support form (as suggested by Lestat on the 2nd page).
I hope a lot of other people do this too.
I hope Gigabyte just fixes it more though:slapass:

Does the SATA DVD drive write when AHCI is set in the JMicron bios or does it read only?
Do the newer (beta) 1.17 JMicron (beta) drivers make any difference?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using the ICH8 SATA ports over the JMicron ports?
I would hope so.Quote:

Hi
the ide does share the same controller as the sata JMicron controller, if not setting up raid please make sure that you do set the sata/ide ctrl mode to AHCI under bios and proceed on with installation of Windows
Thank you

This reply didn't help but while waiting I realized the mistake that I made. While doing a Windows Update I included the JMicron driver that is on there site. I deleted all the JMicron drivers in the device manager and reinstalled the correct ones and I was back to normal. From this experience I will only update drivers that are on the Gigabyte site.
With the SATA drive that I've got I could see no difference.Quote:

I have a problem with too many resources on IRQ 16 & IRQ 18. The GigaLan, video card and sound card should all have their own IRQs, but they don't. This is causing a lot of problems. I just put this system together and I am having problems with Internet Explorer and Firefox hanging and never opening when I click on the shortcut.
I am also experienceing problems with my mouse movements. Sometimes when I move the mouse at a normal speed, the pointer jumps accross the screen. I haven't even tried online gaming yet, but I will be VERY angry if these things crop up during multi-player games (and I'm sure they will). This IRQ issue needs to be fixed as soon as possible. It is causing a lot of problems for people. I have NEVER had another motherboard do this (with Windows XP).
Them
all irq are auto detect and will auto assignt itself. When installing the OS on this board wsa it a fresh clean installation or you are using an existing OS from another board?
Me
It was a FRESH install of Windows - I am not an idiot.
I said that this never happened on any other motherboard. It did not happen with my last motherboard.
I know that the IRQs are assigned automatically, but since all of my other motherboards assigned them correctly (there should only be ONE thing per IRQ), this motherboard IS NOT assigning them correctly.
Them
t has all been validated by our testing departments and if there was any problem or error in performance they would of picked it up and modify it before releasing the model. Even if the IRQ are shared it should be able to operate normally. If you really wish to modified it under the OS please check with Microsoft if there are any ways to manually assisgn the IRQ under Windows
Does anyone know if all of the 965P boards have this IRQ issue?
I think I'm gonna send this back and get another board (abit AB9 maybe?).
Has any more information come to light about how to fix the PIO issues. I'm having problems and can't see how to fix it..
Using 2 SATA hdd's in the yellow ports, no raid, and 2 dvd-rw drives, both pio :(
this has happened before with other mobos. my problem had something to do with windows. when i tried switching to DMA, it would just switch back when i restarted. there is a program out there that forces DMA by registry or something. i will report back when i find it. there is some information on this at cdfreaks.com
jc
Yes, I couldn't see any settings in the BIOS to change the transfer mode, and it seems to be often suggested that this is the place to set it.
I haven't installed any of the Gigabyte SATA & RAID drivers though, as i've read many times that these cause other problems. (..?)
But despite 'use DMA if available' being selected in the device manager, it's still stuck in PIO. Forcing it through the registry could be an only solution..?
the PIO mode was fixed long ago bro.
update to the latest bios and it will fix itself.
if it doesnt then you need to go into device manager under the ide controller and change it there.
if your not seeing it then your not looking int he right place.
Have already updated to F6 (got the S3), and as I just said, I have 'DMA if available' selected.. so if there's somewhere else this needs to be changed, then yes, i'm not looking in the right place.. :SQuote:

ok here we go
take a screen shot of your device manager with the IDE port section open so we can see it.
DMA Mode If available.... yup your looking in the right place, im asking for the screen shot so i can see what the names are that you see. the names you see should say Standard Dual port IDE controller. or SATA controller. and possibly standard Dual port Primary ide controller. and secondary
1)
intel sata, you didnt install any intel sata drivers when you isntalled the intel driver suite. this is a misgnomer when it comes to the sata on these boards, they dont use the intel sata persay. there are no sata drivers to install, so to speak, sata is a legacy device and needs no drivers.
2)
you can install the gigabyte driver suite yes its not going to hurt anything technically but i strongly advise against doing so
3)
i bet your using a 40 pin cdrom cable. if you have an 80-pin hard drive cable, use that on your dvd drives. dont ask just do it lol
4)
if you installed ANY and i mean ANY gigabyte drivers, uninstall them <-- important. NIC drivers dont count. i mean if you installed any gigabyte or jmicron IDE/SAta drivers, remove them.
5)
it took a reload of windows for me to bring the drives out of PIO mode.
6)
try using the F8 DS3 bios, it can be used on the S3 baord without any problems as they are the same boards
7)
if you do not want to reload windows then you need to go into device manager and uninstall your IDE ports, and reboot and let them reinstall and this SHOULD do it, if not then. ugh... reload.
8)
make sure your drives are master and slave not Cable select.
9)
try try again
10)
if all of this has been done and its still PIO then im lost dude, rma the baord maybe.
11)
try only 1 drive, does it sill do PIO mode?
Wow! that's a great list Lestat.. thanks! I'll work my way through them and let you know how I go.
Just looking inside my case at the moment.. I never really thought there was much difference in the IDE cables - apart from the HDD & CD vs. Floppy (one's visibly shorter..). I assume I have an 80 pin in there.. is a yellow IDE cable with lots of really thin wires, as opposed to the grey one with thicker wires.. might swap it regardless.
I'm not aware that i've installed any 'gigabyte or jmicron IDE/SAta' drivers.. I definatly didn't install the 'Gigabyte SATA and RAID Driver' from the cd though. The other stuff (audio, intel usb, and inf update) I did install..
Anyway.. better get on with trying some of these things!

Edit: screenshot added.
ok good man you follow direction better than most newbies. hell better than all the newbies lol bravo.
ok....
this is what i went thru with my DS3.
i did two things that worked more than anything else.
1)
right click each of the primary and secondary ide controllers and uninstall them or update the driver, tell it manually and choose form a list. it will probably have "standard ide" as one of them choose that.
or
uninstall thema nd reboot and let it reinstall the drivers.
2)
to a full format and reload.
i think both of them worked for me so its your choice but i know for a fact the reload worked.
personally since its been proven the DS3 bios works on the S3 i'd try the latest DS3 bios and see if that works.
there is risk in this but, if the bios doesnt like your board it will give you an error BEFORE it flashes like a checksum error. then you know flashing wont work.
as for the IDE cable, you already have an 80pin since you noted its the thinner wires and not the thicker wires. so good stuff there.
now i have seen, certain older dvd drives not like 80pin cables so you may take a moment and pop the 80 pin off and try a standard CDRom cable.
its worth a shot and only takes a minute.
if your already in Master and slave mode with the jumper on the dvd's then what the heck try CS mode, (cable select).again its worth a shot.
anything to fix it because PIO mode can hurt your DVD drives. over period of extended use and PIO mode makes burning and reading dvd's impossible. PIO mode isnt fast enought to burn a dvd.
we'll get this figured out, i trie forever to make it work and the only thing for me that worked, was to NOT run raid,,, or use the latest bios.
raid totally screwed up the IDe controller.
whats wierd is that i havent heard anyone complaining about this for a long time. are you sure F6 is the latest S3 bios ?
i'd flash the DS3 bios to it, lol why not.
you can also, just for the heck of it, reset the bios and remove the battery, ther eis a slim, very slim change the bios is holding onto some goofy setting and not letting the drives run properly.
Oh! I love you! (haha! don't worry.. it's not gay.. i'm female..). Thought I'd try the easiest of the lot - reinstall drivers manually, and it worked! didn't even have to restart.. though I did for good measure!
Such a frustrating problem with such a simple solution.. kicking myself that I didn't do it earlier..
I assume that the 3rd secondary IDE channel should be not applicable as there's only 1 IDE channel on the board..?
Screenshot to quickly show you..

Thanks so much for all your help - it's greatly appreciated! (I haven't been called a newbie in a long time..just get the odd problem that stumps you! haha!) :D
sweet!
it was hard to remember what i did as i had done a dozen things i knew one of those was going to work.
and newbie to XS i guess.
atleast you used an old thread. most people would have not even searched, they would have started a new thread.
the 3rd IDE channel i THINK is the purple ide slots. since they are raid, it thinks they are ide as you dont have the raid drivers installed,,,, i think.
and your very welcome, this is exactly why we are here, and why these old threads are kept around.
