im thinking of stepping up to this board from a DFI lanparty SLI-D, would the price difference after I sell the lanparty be justified as far as function/oc and performance? I also have a Lian LI V1000. I know the temps won't be as good with the inverted mobo tray, but is it really that substanial? I don't mind a 3-4 degree increase but that's all I can sacrafice. Has there been any tests or actual results you guys can link me too? I would also like to know everybody's chipset temps under load and idle. Thanks in advance

Manual says this pair of 1GB sticks is limited to a single pair (i.e. 2GB limit to RAM installed), leaving 2 RAM slots empty. (Page 2-13 of manual, or on Asus QVL document). In fact, NONE of the low latency ram is approved for more than 2 slots.

I had put in a ticket to Asus about this problem... Their reply is below:

"4 stick will not work and there is no BIOS update that will change RAM compatibility.

You can use the pci slot above the 2nd pci express (3rd from bottom) very easily and not worry much about clearance or airflow. Expecially if you do the fan mod on the tops of the cards or have a side fan in your case. After that your pretty much screwed for pci. You could still do it with a stock cooler but even with the fan mod it would get a bit warmer. Would have to stay stock, heavy grafix overclocking would be out of the question.

I think the mobo makers went to this because they were getting complaints that the standard layout overheated the sli cards. Now they have a problem with free pci slots... Can't win. Is there a better solution?? I personnaly liked the old layout because I use arctic coolers and airflow isn't as much of an issue for me. My temps are low either way. :D

What would the reason be for 4gigs of ram? You designing a super torpedo or something? 2 gigs is already an overkill for 99.9% of the stuff out there.

2 gigs is overkill for 99.9% of the stuff you do with your rig but can't you imagine there are peeps doing different stuff with their computers.

Mine came shipped with the 508 ( i think) bios and was very difficult to install de OS,finally after a few reboots i up dated for the 703 and everything come to is own :toast:

I have 4 1gig cas 2 corsair. I will try it out when I get off work... Maybe it will work anyways.

With 64bit OS and 4gigs of ram Home Video Editing/ sure goes a lot smoother while CD burning and RRA is all going on at the same time

Me too. The slot you spoke of is where my X-Fi is going. I guess the TV tuner card goes to my girlfriend.

ben805 thanks for the thread and a great job. It's been a big help. Got my board yesterday and had a horrible time with the 0805 beta bios. Finally got fixed and now am using the 0703. No problems so far. I also am trying an Opty 148 but the stepping isn't that great. It's CABYE 0543 FPMW. It will boot all the way to 3.0 gig using a Vcore of 1.425 but so far I can only get it stable to 2.84. Raising vcore doesn't seem to help. I'm using the OCZ 4800 ram that's supposed to be good to.... 303 or so fsb. I've been playing with the ram for a while but can't figure what kinda voltage it needs. If you all got any tips throw em at me. I get the feeling my chip is a better chip than I am an ocer.
Did I understand the earlier post in this thread that the HT is shown for this board as NB to SB and should be set to 600 to equal a 3 on the DFI board, 1000=5 and 800=4. Is that correct? Aren't there two settings for NB to SB on this board?

yep thats right 1000 is 5, 800 is 4, 600 is 3 and yes also I hve also set both the settings in the 'chipset config'

The K8 to NB Frequency is the HTT Multiplier. For bios 703, divide your manual number you selected by 200 to get your multiplier. I will be using 800 so that equals a 4X multiplier. If I get over 250 I will drop K8 to NB Frequency to [600]. If I leave SB to NB frequency at 1000 it shouldnt effect my overclock does it? Also, what setting ensures that you are running memory in syncronous ratio of 1:1? I went in memory configuration and set memclock mode to [limit] and set memclock value [200]. Thanks.

Just saw this thread now, and I have a question I hope someone can answer for me. I am going to be buying this board (A8N32-SLi) and have a ThermalTake Big Typhoon to use on it. I was going to purchase the Corsair XMS3500LL 2 x 1gb kit to go with it all, but looking at the pics on the front page, im not sure its going to fit. From what I have seen the heatspreaders on the ram are quite large, and the ballistix that are shown in that pic have very little clearance as it is. Can the ram not be used in slots A2/B2 instead of A1/B1? Manual says to use A1/B1 when using 2 sticks. Any help is appreciated.

I did not see any benefit from running the HTT multiplier higher, but anything above 1000 definitely induced instability so you'll be fine to set them at 600(3x) even if you only running 250, you certainly can try 800(4x) and do a few benchmarks or use FRAPS to test some games and see for yourself ;)

if the ram are way too tall then you might want to consider taking the heatspreader off and throw in a 80mm case fan to cool them, or maybe get different ram? :D

Was looking at some OCZ PC-4000 EB sticks but no one has stock anywhere (Im in the UK btw). Your recommendations are appreciated.

i´m becoming sorry to change from my ultra D.
the fan control is very poor,the asus update doesn't work like it should...well i´m going too test it until monday,i think DFI Expert is the answer to my problems:(

'restore setup defaults' in the exit menu off the bios - worked for me and flashing the bios did nothing as it did for u

bullit, the Asus Updater will not flash back to an earlier bios. Use the AFUDOS flash utility on a floppy to go backwards. There's an explaination on the Asus site and in the manual. What bios are you using. For me the 0703 was best.

I use CS2 a lot...imho going from 1 GB to 2GB pays big dividends...going for 2 to 3 is not even noticeable... and that's shooting RAW files with a Canon 20D (8 Mpixels) and using ACR to convert them to 16-bit/channel, 40 MB files to work with in CS2... sometimes I'll fart around with HDR blended files...these things use 4 or more shots bracketed for different exposures and 32bit/channel depth...in other words, HUGE files...that's pretty well the very top of high-end PS use... 2 Gigs + a fast CPU + a fast HD and you're laughing.

CS2 is memory intensive but it's much more CPU-intensive...a faster CPU (or overclocking what you have till it screams) and better X2 support from Adobe is needed a heck of a lot more than 3 or 4 GB of memory.

Shogan wen you open asus update,instead of updating from a file or from the internet a little lower you have "Options" there you can select Bios downgrade or something like that.:slap: :D

copy the bios file to a floppy. make sure it is named A8N32SLI.rom. then boot up and press Alt + F2 and let the autoflasher do it for you

ben 805 did you receive raid drivers with your board? I'm wanting to install raid0 using 4 raptors and had no success using the drivers I had on floppy for the dfi board from the F6 promt.

Yes it can :)
Its in options at the bottom of the drop down menu,click next,then check (tick) 'Bios Downgradeable'.

please read my previous post, you'll need to load the default bios setting to reset the APM, it's a bug. ;)

2GB OCZ EB or 2GB Mushkin Redline are good, could be tricky to tweak but they're good memory.

Here's what I got with mine...

The 3dmark05 score seems low though. Not sure yet. Stock clocks on the 7800GTs.

What are you guys getting for Mobo temps? PC Probe is the only software that seems to read this board right now. Not sure how reliable it is though.

Ben, after your tips I have tried two CPU's and they had the same problems

CPU's: Venice 3200+ and X2 3800+

- both are RS @2.4Ghz (with the same voltage in the BIOS)
- both boot @2.55Ghz
- both don't boot @2.6Ghz

I sure that is a mobo problem...or mobo CPU voltage problem!

In windows CPU-Z, AI booster and PC Probe reads three different voltages..
From BIOS, when i set 1.5V system don't boot. When I set 1.3V + 200mV (= 1.5V) the system go fine.

I can't belive I have foud the only two cpu's in the world that aren't stable over 2.4Ghz...but don't know what doing more... :(

If anyone can help me...

hey did anyone ever figure out if this mb was defualting to less v-core on the dual cores or not? i read somthing about that in this thread but cant seem to find it now. fixin to instal this mb so was deff woundering about this...

btw: does the shipping bios need to be flashed to somthing beter? im deff going to have to read this whole thread front to back...

Measured with a DMM at the MOSFET's mine over volts on default vcore with a X2-3800+. MaxTcase shows it as a 1.35v chip, my Ultra-D set it to 1.35 on auto {DMM measured}.

A8N32 left to auto vcore sets it at 1.423v measured at the MOSFET. Manually setting Vcore to 1.35 still resulted in 1.421v actual.
Only way I've came up with to get close to 1.35v is set vcore to 1.2875 in the BIOS and that gives me 1.344v actual.

blue078: ive noticed something along those lines as well..on my board i set the vcore to 1.5 and it was showing 1.392 - the only way i could reliably get the vcore to where i wanted it was to drop it down to 1.3v and do the 200mv over volt function - then it tracks properly.

I'm having success with the 805 beta bios. My overclocks on both mem and cpu went up considerably. Much more stable. I'll see if my results are the same as ben805 when my mach II comes in. He had issues with phase with the beta bios. My voltage that I am setting in the bios seem to be extremely accurate. cpuid and pcprobe agree. When I raise the voltage in bios the temps also rise accordingly. I haven't measured at the mosfet yet (not sure where to check *Blue078* can you show me where?)

LucusScott--- I got mine at fry's. Retail and would you believe it was on black friday! They still had a few then and they may have got more. Are you near one?

No comment on my 3dmark05 score? Is that low for sli? Also what about my mobo temps? I regularly get 115 to 120. Is that high?

*A bit off topic but* I know this is ben05's thread but there are others that are trying to contribute here. I didnt want to create a seperate thread so I post here trying to help. I have posted many times and my posts seem to be ignored. Why is that? Is it because my results are different? I'm not having any problems with my board. With voltage, bios or otherwise. Don't get me wrong, ben05 has done a great job but his results are not the only ones that are gospel. Do I have to :kissbutt: to ben05 to get any response? Ok here you go. i just got up and running im having trouble running the top 16x pci slot im having to use the bottom one to get it to boot? anyone have this issue? im going to try poping it back in now that ive gotten it to boot and have had some time to go into the bios and set a few things. man this bios is WAY differnt then the DFI bios im going to need to study this thread cause im lost on the settings... ok guys any help please bring it on i havent had an asus mb in a very long time!

I don't need a congrats your awesome or anything like ben05 regularly gets, just acknowledgement when I do post. I ask easy questions and simple advice and i'm just ignored. I thought it was silly to start another thread on the same topic. He got his board early, so did I. It's better if we all contribute I thought... I think you are the first. Is the card seating all the way? I used to have an old atx case that was slightly warped and caused the video card to not seat at the end... Did you plug in the EZ 12v power to the motherboard? I didn't need to plug mine in but that could help. When you start off the bios is a pain in the butt, however all the options are still there. They are just spread out on several pages and called some different things. It took me a while of playing around just to figure it all out. What settings are you having issues with? Ben05 posted some bios pics in the beggining of the thread if you want to reference them. What version bios you using? Try going back to the 703.

Doesn't this board have an ALT-F2 to auto load bios. Can you use the Alt-F2 on boot to change bios to an older version like the 703?

yeah man i did reseat the card but the case could be wraped im not sure from what ive read in the manual the top and bottom 16x slots can be used in single card mode so maybe ill just keep the card in the bottom for now hell beter air flow with the card away from the cpu socket anyways.. as far as bios settings i just need to dig in and get to playin around with them. im just soo used to the DFI and the bios that this asus is just plain wierd. im not even sure what bios this shipped with yet? ill have to look at cpu-z or somthing and see what version i have. well hey thx ill try reseating the card and go back to page one and start reading i gues it cant hurt any... so far so good i like the mb and im sure ill get things sorted out..

I thought of telling him that, but it's set that way by default. Also even if it was set to pcie2>pci>pcie1 it would still eventually boot to the pcie1 if it tried the other 2 first.

Something else I though of... check your pcie1 slot. See if there is anything in it that would block your card and check if there is any of the little gold paddles that are messed up. (the little things that make contact to the card)

Yup, exact same problem here. Regardless of what I set the Vcore to, with the cpu overvolt disabled it would only run 1.4/1.39v. Cpu overvolt enabled and everything works fine.

11k for 2xGT-sli seems fine imo. 2xGTX-sli will get average 13-14k. I have a single 512mb GTX which gets 11k. Have you tried comparing your score to other systems on futuremark?:stick:

I'm sure there will be a benchmark advice thread on this forum but not specific to AMD.

For you guys with the voltage problems have you tried the 805 bios? I would like to know if its just the earlier bios with that problem. Mine with the 805 doesn't have that issue.

Damn!! 11k with a 512 gtx!! I didn't know the extra mhz made that big of a difference. Your scoring with one card what I get in sli. Sniff. makes me sad. Are you running stock speeds on it too? I wish I had the full version of 3dmark05. Can't compair directly. I will check around though. thanks

Your using the 703 and most people are going to that. I'm doing good with the 805 beta. Do you think the voltage problems people are getting maybe could be fixed with the 805. I'm not having that problem. (I did with an earlier 703) Not trying to say one is better than the other...

Hopefully asus will come out with a non beta bios that will resolve this stuff.

I assume you're talking about the vcore issue, personally I did not find much advantages using the beta 805/804 over the official 703, infact....under subzero I found those beta to be more tricky to get up to 3.4~3.5Ghz than 703, maybe it was just my board so you guys will need to play with them and see what happen, as we all have different hardwares so the result may vary, though whatever you do try to stay away from 503....it's very buggy. Again, do not completely rely on the vcore reading from the BIOS, PC Probe, or AI Booster... they sucks IMO, you might not see much differences at lower vcore but try to set them to 1.56v~+ and see what your BIOS read, mine always stuck at 1.48v :stick:

Yea, I hope the next official bios release would fix some of these bugs as well.

It's funny you should say the 503 is buggy... that's what I started with. Maybe that's why my 508 beta bios seemed to work so much better to me... Funny. There has to be a reliable way to read info from within windows! This sucks. Are all boards like this when they first start out?

I will need your advice big time when my mach II comes in Monday or Tuesday. I will probably have to go to the 703. Did you hit cold bug? I have a 3800 X2 that i'm really worried about. I wonder if I will hit a brick wall with overclocking if it gets too cold. I have 2 3800 X2 right now. The one i'm using clocks higher on air but who knows when I put em both on phase. I'm hearing people say they can't overclock if the temp goes below even -10!!! My mach II will be well below that.

What did you use for neoprene insulation? Where did you buy it? I liked your pics for the phase. Should help me. Do you use a heater element on the back of your board?

I'm still wandering round the board with the Venice and stock HSF, trying the Ballistix out at 200 HTT 2-2-2-5 1T (it works great). I'll try the 144 this week prolly.

Nah 600/1800. At stock I got 9700, then slowly started clocking. Havn't finished yet! I did read somewhere that this board takes advantage of the new 512mb cards becuase they take 'more' advantage of the dual 16x pci-e, smells like BS to me tho as other 512 cards are getting similar scores on different boards (although they are tested with fx-57):D

Is anyone hear having problems with 'Asus Update'? Downloaded the latest version from Asus, tried installing and it wont recognise my motherboard.

Says :

NT Service registry error...please reboot.

Then once into the install it will say :

Setup detected no Asus motherboard...installation will now close

I know this is a new board but I thought other users had used the update program without problem.

I always loved Asus board unless they had problem with divider or lack of voltage (well usually modded vcore anyway). In fact, my best s754 board was asus modded. So fed up with spontaneously dying DFI and memory it has killed so far I was waiting for something I can trust on... about time :) (BTW, I went through 6 DFI boards now... 1 is known memory killer, 1 didn't even post when it got here, 1 died after 3 months of usage, 1 recently died after 3 months, 2 are in service right now but I just don't feel good about using it). Total memory burnt 6gig so far, total mb death count 4 out of 6. No wonder even fry's stop carrying them.

I read that this is caused by Creative's SB drivers, I had this problem when I was using the Audigy2 but since I upgraded to X-FI FPS its gone away.

Thanks for that. Yeah I have Xfi-extreme music card with the latest drivers and its still no go. I'll try uninstalling the card to see if I can get it to work. I used to use the afudos flash procedure with my old K8vse board which worked fine but if I can flash it using windows it would save plenty of hassle.

Want to try out the beta bios for this board 804/805/

I had the same problems with the software. I wish asus would fix this quick.
*People will moan and groan about windows bios update not being safe but the fact is there are a lot of mobo makers that offer this now. I've heard very few reports of messups. You have to make sure you have a stable system to begin with or your just asking for trouble with or without a bios flash...*

Only think working far as I can tell is the afudos. I believe there is some kind of auto bios update built into the bios when you boot but I'm not sure how to use it. I don't have the manual or the cd that came with the board.

I think you're referring to the safety backup of the default 'dual' bios should you push things too far and you cant post. The board resets to default values should this happen, saving you from clearing the cmos via jumper/battery. This feature has saved my ass a 'number' of times coz due to the battery/jumper being located directly behind the mammoth 512mb GTX card :D

Your right that the safety backup can be a lifesaver... but I was actually refering to the ASUS EZ Flash feature.
Ripped right off ASUS website -- "With ASUS EZ Flash, you can update BIOS before entering operating system. No more DOS-based flash utility and bootable diskette required."

I'm trying to download the manual now to find out more.

Yeah APM is showing correctly (bios has loaded defaults that any times from over zealous OCing I guess :D ) , tried loading defaults anyway just to be sure and Ausu Update still wont work, thx anyways.

Smurfmods: Yeah, read about that although I cant find anything in the bios that mentions anything about it or any key prompts for entering the program :confused: Bios 703, rev 1.01 board btw. Looks like I may have to get the old floppies out:p:

Well, I've loaded the 805 beta and there is little difference from 703 in practice. The voltages are still out (BIOS CPU 1.400 is 1.44 in PCProbe or AIBooster, RAM 2.8 is 2.85), no change. Possibly overclocks a little less well. The big difference as far as I can see is with MCT Extra Timings, which now address all the variables in A64Tweaker by the look of it.

No, nowhere near as stable as 703. Time to revert.

Ah rats, Asus Update won't let me downdate - "use an Asus DOS utility". meh.

I had success using the Asus Updater flashing from the 0502 to the 0805 beta. I used the AFUDOS flash utility to go from the 0805 back to the 0502 because I didn't know about the setting allowing me to flash backwards. In the Update utility, in the dropdown menu, there's an option called OPTIONS. Open that and there is an option to downgrade bios. That way you can use the utility to flash to an earlier bios. I also used the updater to flash from the 0502 to the 0703.

I'm wrong about the MCT settings btw, although I notice that TWR defaults to 3 in 703 and 2 in 805, at least with my RAM. Maybe that was causing the instability in 805?

has anyone order their board from newegg.com if so when and what rev did you get? also I plan on running 2x bfg 7800 gtx with this board and an x-fi FPS in between them. is anyone having any trouble? by trouble I mean is it running hot.

One word of caution, one of the capacitors on the XiFi is resting on the backplate of my KO. I don't know if this may become a problem since that plate tends to get very hot. i too have an xfi music in between 2 gtx's that are water cooled and that over sized capacitor was a pain....had to "mod" the back plate of the dangerden hold down - a little dremel here and now all is well ;)

Seems fine with the Z503 2GB. Haven't played about with it too much, but get 2-2-2-5 1T at DDR400, 3-3-3-8 1T right up to DDR564 (with 2.85v). The higher the native CPU multiplier, the easier it all gets really, but isn't that always the case. Dual channel memory shows such a performance hit when dividers come in to play.

I am having lot of problems with my actual DFI SLI-DR when trying to overclock using two Maxtor Max10 300GB so I ordered an ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe to see if the famous Nf4 bug with early 16mb cache Maxtor has been fixed....

My 2 300GB maxtor are more than 1 year old. Sometimes on boot DFI SLI DR does not recognize them and fails to boot. I tried changing mb but this is the third with the same problems (I tried any official, beta and mod bios).

You'll love this board bro...once you get everything dial in properly it's solid as rock, I haven't seen this board kill anything yet but I'm sure time will tell :D :toast:

I think this problem, the cap on the xifi touching the vid card, would only happen on the KO's since they have that metal casing all around the video card. If I was using regular 7800's, I don't think it would touch. I don't know about that x-ram though.

PS:// What's your temp when your CABNE 148 prime @ 3GHz in A8N32? I have a CABNE 0528 148/ ASUS A8N32 currently prime at 3GHz @ 1.45V in BIOS / 1.47V in ProbeII. I got 46C for CPU, 31C for MB.

Uhmmm i think I am in hurry to get this board now. My 3800+ spontaneously decided to die ro my 2 DFI NF4 Ultra and SLI which has been flakey for last couple of days are dead together... or could be all 3 ... -_-; Well going to have some shopping frenzy except I am stuck by unavailibility of board now...

I was reading on Asus's A8N32 Forum and came across the following issue report

My intention is to run two separate Instillations of XP on two non raided Sata drives with the primary boot drive fixed up to a drive caddy thus I can boot to drive 1 when that drive is in the caddy or boot to drive 2 when the caddy is empty.

I would be most grateful for some advice as to whether the above issue would scupper my cunning plan, or indeed any advice regarding my plan.

Booting the OS becomes a problem when any HDD is added or removed from the PC.

It screws up the boot order config. It is a bit of a pain when I forget to plug in my external USB HDD because the PC won't load the OS.

Pressing F8 gives you a boot menu which helps, but I would class it as a bug and hope that it gets fixed in a BIOS update.

Thanks for confirming this for me m8 , I must say I am pretty vexed at this unexpected problem as running a 2x XP OS via a removable caddy was a pretty vital part of my now scuppered plan :( Nice one ASUS :slapass:

No Problem :)

It won't stop you from running 2x OS HDD, but you must edit the boot order each time if one of the drives is removed from the PC :(

I would say that this boot problem and the non 1T mode with TCCD ram at high fsb are the only real problems I have come accross so far.

The board is rock stable and runs cool. Other people have had issues with voltages etc..., but I have not had any of these problems :)

Both issues should be fixed with a BIOS update as long as Asus are aware of the problem in the first place. I am pretty sure somebody must have let them know by now :)
