Cantankerous - I ran the 625/750 1.275/1.95 setting for some time. Definitely was able to loop 3dMark05 and play a couple hours of games with no problems. This was with stock cooling. For the last 2 nights, I have been able to just bump to that on load with no issues and then use the system for the night. Although, I have been defaulting back to stock since I am just using stock cooling. My guess is it is fine. I could probably clock the core to 1.25 and be fine and possibly the memory down to 1.9.

Still is a challenge to find the right clocks.

Wondering, how did you loop 05? For me the option to loop selected tests is grayed out, all I can do is set a number of times for each test to run which isn't what I want to do. Thanks.

Got my Sapphire x1800xl today. Initial testing so far with the stock cooler pegged at full speed - 625/700 with 1.225/2.0/2.0 I tried 750 on the mem but it caused a reboot of my machine.

This is probably a stupid question, but do you think I should turn off VPU recovery in the driver CP? I usually turn it off anyway. I also have the Zalman cooler coming from dnottis on monday. I might try my hand with my maze4 before then but we'll see, I don't have enough ramsinks for that tho so I might have to wait. Also, I'm using Cat 5.11's.

I'm also a little ticked at Newegg right now, I got my card and it looks like someone dropped the card on the top corner near the power connector. It's small but mashed. I'll post a pic later to show. Other than that, the card is working flawlessly so far so no RMA at this point. If I start having issues then it's going back for a replacement.

Lots of people are getting 625/700 with low vcore but me :( I got to pump 1.275/1.95/1.95 to get 625, but then again I can run memory at that speed up to 750 without any issues :)

Was able to hit the 9K mark in 3dmark05 tonight. Settings were as follows (stock cooling)

655/810 1.3/2.2: 9034 (5.11 cats control panel only)(x24400+ @2.4 1gb)

I am sure the memory could go higher - but I am going to wait till I get better cooling in the future. Also would prefer a final ATItool or something where I an 100% trust the voltage. As someone mentioned in this thread - who knows how safe these are to push much higher. For now I am satisfied that I hit 9K. I am sure it could go higher if I tweaked memory and disabled the norton internet security. But oh well. I guess this is a keeper for now...

So I haven't had a chance to compare directly yet, but are the cooler mount holes the same on the X1800XL as they are with the NV cards? For cooling I really prefer to WC with my maze4 block.

Has anyone increased the PCI-E bus yet? And actaully seen results increaseing there score? I know I tried and I didn't get a single point more in results which I though was odd since fugger did it to his and saw a decent gain in points.

i have a problem with my x1800xl.

the card is from gecube.

max. frequency is 580/750

i use overclocker tool

my settings are 600 core with 1,3V (i have watercooler) and memory is 750 with 1.95v

so when i play with 600 core the vpu recover sets the settings back.

so i think when i set the voltage from 1,1v to 1,3v i must get the xt speed (625).
but the card didn´t do that speed.

have i only a bad card or is the overclockers tool not so good. i think the voltage didn´t work.

where i can control the voltage with a multimeter?

Try setting the core voltage @ 1.25V. And drop the memory down to 650 for starters. Sometimes people are having issues OCing the memory higher but you should hit 625 core without issue. Sometimes the higher voltage is what really kills the OC for some reason.

But heres a pic I got. The only thing that didn't work was the Mem I/O voltage spot otherwise all else was fine for testing.

To my suprisement I dropped the voltage a little on the card.

From 1.275/1.95/1.95 To 1.25/1.9/1.9 perfectly stable at 625/750 so far. So actual voltage would be 1.225/1.875/1.875 (good guess on the I/O since everything else drops .025V). Sweet :)

5 Loops of 05 and 03. Sounds great to me :) Played a little bit of FEAR also worked good.

can you disable VPU recover? it will shut mine off sometimes even if there are no artifacts it will automatically stop the bench.

Well right now until I can test full stability I keep it on. Since we might thing we might not see anything can we really be sure theres no artifacts?

If I could use that test that CCC has that would be great.

i disabled it. the auto clock in ccc takes tooo long. after 15 min it made my system reboot.

Thanks for your reply. After running CCC automatic checker twice it told me the same thing, 574/549. I am having a hard time with the voltage tool though. Putting the voltage higher, even up to 1.125/1.150 nets me artifacts, little black squares on the screen, kinda like what that guy showed in his snapshot of FEAR. Excuse me but I forgot his nick though I am sure it started with an S. Any ideas? So far the 574/449 is on stock volts any higher and its actually worse! Please don't tell me im stuck at 574/449 max. That is pooh compared to what you guys are getting.

Smoke, fire, lantern flames, explosions etc. Everything else is crystal clean. I put the card back to stock speed 500/500 and same thing and I even raised volts and same thing. I hope it is just a driver issue with this game and the new CAT 5.11 cause I can't make those badly rendered effects go away with this card.

Like I said before, I have been running my PCIE bus at 105 for the past 9 months without issue. Perhaps raising it higher only nets results on Intel based setups as that is what fugger has been testing on lately when he posted his findings of 115mhz netting him favourable results of 1k gain in 05.

Hi my friend! Yes I did mean you. The anomolies I witness in COD2 are not what you experiences through your posted pics, instead I get the anomolies you posted when I raise voltage to the core even if only to 1.125. My core seems strong as stock volt brings me 575/550 stable and artifact free but as soon as I raise voltage to go higher I get little black squares on the screen, notably in Grand Canyon from 05. If I don't raise volts all is good.

In COD2 the anomoly I witness again is only on effects, fire, explosions, smoke etc. All backgrounds, weapons, characters etc are 100% as should but as soon as an 'effect' is visible it shows up as flashing squares and not what it should. Very weird. Quake 4, 01, 03 and 05 all show up normally and as should. Going to have to work on it more however I think these voltage programs may work to an extent but are not 100%. I hope a more mature and refined voltage program comes out that perhaps may yield better results. I am hoping as well that more CAT releases will bring some greater gains as well as perhaps a more finely tuned bios, even if from a different manufacturer that can be used at a later time to stabilize the card. All is too new right now to expect 100% on everything out of the box.

There is a thread started by someone else about the CAT 5.11 release. People in there as saying after this driver they have weird artifacts in BF2. I am not sure if they are the same type or arties that I am getting as no one elaborated and I don't play BF2 myself. Either way I am going to continue to tinker. 575/550 is nice but so many others are getting higher. Even if my core would only get to 600 I would be happy as long as my memory did in the 700 range which so far isn't working due to the voltage hurting my card in terms of visual quality. Little black squares and popping white pixels are not what I want to see. It is not cooling either as my card never hits above 54c with the Zalman cooler, ceramique, 120mm fan blowing over card as well as the PCI bracket removed under the card. You can't get much better cooling than that unless you go water and below on temps. 54c is a very nice temp considering it was in the 70's with stock cooling.

Tom2110: and with default clocks its ok? try to bump mem voltage to 1.95 and I/O too.

PCIE voltage? Don't have a clue, As far as I knew only AGP could get a voltage bump, my DFI nF4 has no such option.

I know what you mean about being scared to raise volts. I am too, especially since I only noticed the little black squares from raising volts. Did those little black squares show up on default clocks, cooling and volts or did they only show up from using the voltage utility?

Ya I get that error sometimes too, thats stating basically raising the voltage. Try upping the voltage on the mem and i/o to 1.95. If that doesn't work try dropping the mem clocks to say 600 for starters. I know mine ram scales very nicely with vcore raises, but some others have to really up the voltage (2.2V) to actually get to 750 sometimes.

i checked the voltages at the card. that are good. when i use 1,4V then i have 1,36v at the card.
It makes no different when i use 1,25v or 1,35v, the result is the same.

i can´t bench 3d mark05 with 600/600.
i become an error but other error when i would play HL2 or css test.

i think that can´t be right that the card didn´t clock good.

a gpu v core at 1,4v didn´t help. i think there are a problem.

gpu temperature is 40° at idle with watercooling.


i use the new DFI board with ati chipset. can that be the problem?

1.4v on a XL is way too much. u might kill the core going so high.

Anyways, what I wanted to add here that the DFI lanparty boards, with the extra molexs on the mobo for power really get a GOOD amount of voltage into the pci-e slots... I know this because coming from an MSI neo4 plat/sli it did not have those extra connectors, and it barely had enough juice to power my cards at GT speeds... I couldn't reach ultra speeds no matter what... too unstable.. but with the DFI this is not a problem. I was shocked at how well my cards overclocked on this mobo... went from 410/1070 max oc to 450/1230 (bench stable). while there is no way to boost it, I think the voltage is ample for good OCing... and pci-e video cards draw more voltage from the pci-e slots than the extra power connector... or so I hear... but I would say you're set on your DFI for that. You should not have to increase it beyond what it's at now.

600/600 is still not too bad I suppose. IT would beat a GT for sure.

Decided to try one more 9k run this morning since it was cold in the house. This was with a cold boot. Same system as before: stock cooler, x24400+@2.4, 1g, sapphire x1800xl OEM from newegg.

675/820 1.35/2.2: 3dmarkd 05 = 9160

I tried 820 last night but got major artifacts - although the system had been running 48hrs straight. Last night it was left off. Seems that is definitly temp bound. Not sure if 675 would have ran at 1.3 but I figured I had one shot till the system got nice and toasty.

damn, now that is a sweet oc. makes my 575/550 look like pooh.

Notice how all backgrounds and characters are ok but all effects are screwed up. Explosions are flashing squares, fire is flashing squares even strobe lights are flashing white triangles. Any clue what this is? Is my card bunk or is this something else? I have tried enabling/disabling AA/AF, changing mipmap quality from performance to quality, put card back to stock speeds/volts nothing changes it. It is only in this game as well. Quake 4 and all benches look fine.

cantankerous : omg, thats interesting .. what about catalyst AI, tried to disabled it? reinstalled drivers?

It could be the game just not playing right with the card thats all. It might just be one of those glitches that will be fixed in decembers driver release. Submit it as a bug report to ATI and see what they say.

I had the same thing in quake 4. I had black squares on the walls. Even @ stock speeds. So i have send my card back. I hope i get my new card this week. I will not use the OC tool for a wile first i'm gonna test how the games run @ stock if i have not got any problems.

Those XL core realy hate voltages. almost no XL is able to run XT voltages. And can not run @ 700 core because of that. I realy hope the progrma is'n killing te cards. I preffer a hardmod for now. Or a XT 256 bios. I don't trust that program annymore. So its max CCC clocks for me then. Just waiting for a new version of ATi tool. And Hardmods.

I guess problem is when you set voltages, then restart pc few times, and set voltage from low to higher, that just card didnt like, would be better if we could have bios with preset voltages and not this manual crap.
Have GPU 600 / MEM 1400 .. on gpu 1.150V and 1.95V mem and no artifacts in FEAR after 20 minutes of playing, not bad.

so what you guys are seeing in my screenshots is NOT from a bad card? I don't have to worry anymore? Thing is no one else is mentioning this which is why I have been stressing. I too was thinking my card may have been damaged in someway. If it doesn't look like card damage or a bad overclock then that is great news. Perhaps it is just a driver glitch. I may use driver cleaner and put a differnet driver set in just to see how it does. I 'll let you know what I come up with. Thanks guys.

Well bad news. I did a proper uninstall of official 5.11 drivers and put back in the Omega based 5.10a and the exact same thing.

Is there a special part of the card that processess effects like those shown above that perhaps may be bad or does the main gpu process that just like everything else?

Going to try 5.9 on the shipped CD. If that doesn't help it I dunno cause no one else is mentioning this.

cantankerous : i can only imagine that memory on card is damaged, and stored texture shows this mess when in damaged memory chip. What about FEAR or other benchmarks? 3D Mark 2001SE first test, no problems there with explosions?

No, FEAR I don't have installed right now however Quake 4, and all 3dmarks show up just fine. I will admit I don't know too much about how vid cards work but I was wondering if maybe one of the 16 pipes was damaged or perhaps one of the 8 vertex shaders? If that is even possible.

It is weird cause all backgrounds and characters look fantastic, it is just effects that look screwed up.

Going through the options on the card such as soften shadows and the such can get rid of this anomoly, but only briefly. For the time being it is fine but when I go to change another option or start the game back up they come back again so I have no clue. If I disable soften shadows altogether it seems that this problem doesn't come back as often as when I leave it enabled to world only or everything. I tried 5.9 on shipped CD, 5.10a omega and 5.11 official and they all exhibit the same thing. Very, very strange to say the least. I am picking up two new 74GB raptors tomorrow and am going to format from fresh to see what I come up with. Either way card is 100% stable from crashes and 100% free of artifacts except for this nonsence in COD2.

Is it likely a game bug or damaged memory? Now I'm sad as I thought this card was the cats meow until this. I don't want to wait a whole new month for another CAT release just to see if this gets fixed up, or better yet, a longer wait for a patch to COD2 itself.

cantankerous : well .. i got new problems .. i installed SP2 and when i run for example 3D Mark 03 .. i got 13500marks with 600/1400 .. when i run mother nature, it drops when looking a far after looking into water up to 22fps! even X800GTO2 got more then 30fps, im sure i didnt changed anything else lol, or was it with sapphire? im confused :(

looks like we are both having issues. Here is my new one to add to the list. From day 1 I was able to run the CCC Overdrive automated clock checker and after 4 seperate runs each run came back as clocks stable at 574/550. After the problems I was having I decided to run it one last time to see what it would come up with. Now it tells me my card is only stable at 574/540! Something is up with this card and the memory it seems. Never overclocked higher than max overdrive settings and voltage was never set higher than 1.150 from stock 1.100 and even then it was for about 10 mins max. This sucks.

Same problem, go ( in COD2 ) options/graphic and disable soften smoke edges. Than it will be ok. Seems to be game bug ...

if it wasn't for my new major problem I would have been one happy camper with your response but now I am really feeling bad about this card purchase. It seems my memory is getting worse and worse on thing. Just ran the automated clock checker again and now it tells me my memory is only good up to 513. It went from 549, to 540 to 513 in a matter of 3 days with no voltage change or higher clocks than that. Card is slowly dying I think.

I don't trust the auto clock checker. I have never made it through that damn thing without having my system reboot during the 20 or so minutes it takes. That thing can vary depending on the temps of the card etc. The real test is run your last highest overclock settings and do a 2005 or 2003 bench and see if it passes with out locking up or artifacting with a similar score of your last bench.

The strange thing is that checker has never screwed up on me. My system has never halted or reset while running it. Each and every time I ran the checker my cards temp was the same. 52-54c. Never less, never more. I have no clue what is going on. The only reason I went to run it again is because 3D01 dropped to desktop which it, or anything else for that matter has over the past 3 days I have ran this card. Seeing my ram drastically drop in speed is making me sick to my stomach.

After all these reports of the COD2 bug finally coming in I have to realize this about my card. I thought it was just my card acting up in COD2 which is what made me further my testing. I am glad it is just a bug and not my card but now I have to figure out what is going to get this thing stable again at stock volts.

Could you try Quake 4 ? Just walk to a wall and look AT it i got black squares all over the place. IT was with omega 5.10a dirvers. And it was not my oc all was @ stock. May be it was a game setting to i just don't know yet.

But indeed some of these cards are realy strange i. I'm thinking of buy's a new ref 2 XT that has 650-775 standard. I whant to be out this mess. Hopefully there will be a X1800 XT 256 mb bios soon so we can test with stock higher voltages. Maybe that wil work ?

Benched my X1800XL at stock everything on my AMD64 3200+ @2.4ghz (s754) and got 7160 score for 05, that looks about right from what ive seen. Downloaded the OC tool and set it to 630 core with 1.225 and 700 ram with 1.95, here is the interesting thing tho, my score is only 7928 with those settings. Isn't that incredibly low? The XT's are scoring 9000 and thats basicly XT speed, so why is it 1000 less? Is the OC tool drooping or underclocking or whats going on? Is this right?

Gavinni : test mother nature test in 3D Mark 03 and tell me fps from place when you look into trees with turtle, how much your fps fall there.

k the first scene goes to 29 when u can see the trees and the turtle, then when it goes upclose to the turtle and looks into the trees it goes down to 35

ok, its fine then, cause i dont know what happened but some updates from microsoft f00ked something with my card and it drops to 22 and also other bench programs shows similar drops, reinstalled windows .. dont using SP2 and its ok again.

So why is the score so low?

How does that explain my stock score being right on target? Your logic doesnt make a lot of sense =O a s754 at 2.4ghz is still plenty fast even when compared to s939 3000+'s and 3200+'s. CPU limitation does not impact an 05 score by 1000 points.

Im getting just for refrence 8.6k with 625/750. There seems to be a very nice boost in preformance upping the mem speed.

Make sure all setting are set to application preference or performance in CCC.

do these card have a coldbug? Anyone tested them on phasechange? I'm thinking of getting one = AGP version from Dimond for my Dothan rig ;) . And what about FEAR did anyone had IQ glitches with it. Can anyon benchmark FEAR I hope ATi will comeout with driver fix soon

There is no AGP version of this card and probley wont be one either.

As for FEAR IQ. I havn't noticed any glitches in that case. Just in some places the frames would drop quiet a bit, but hitting escape and going back would fix it and I'd get more. Wierd glitch I'd say.

Ya guess I didn't hear that then, heard the smaller ones X1300 and X1600's where getting AGP but not this sieres.

And yes theres a coldbug problem currently, reading through here and other posts about the XL/XT's you'll find it.

I had that problem with the 5.10a, but my COD2 is working properly with 5.11.
Will check for u tonight and post my settings. Maybe the display settings changed to autodetect with new drivers.

figures, why me? The card was MINT for 3 days, infact I thought it was going to a very good card due to the fact that it did 575 on the core stock when others would do 560 max. After 3 days this suddenly happens? Temps were never above 54c which 20c less than the stock cooler for this card.

Well theres always the chance you might get a newer core rev with a new card. I personally wouldn't mind a A15 core :)

If it makes you feel any better - I cannot overclock my card without at least adding a little voltage. Once I do that everything is fine. I am convinced these cards needs good cooling and a lot of patience. The first couple of days I was a little concerned that I would not have a good card.

I seen that in Farcry too and world of warcraft when i got bloom enabled, but that was with X800XT .. weird

Bloom enabled? How do I go about disabling that? You have seen something EXACTLY like this before? Is it a bug/driver setting or a defective core cause man im stressing out. I spent a lot of money on this card and I am not the most financially stable either. I save for a long time to get these parts so I take it very hard when things go wrong. Either way I am done playing games. I am formatting now and putting CAT 5.11 in from the get go to see what I come up with. Either way 3dmark01 is crashing to desktop all the time now where as it never did even once all weekend. I really hope my Windows is just dirty but I have never had 01 crash on me from a bad driver install. Have you?

Your not the only one that 01 crashes for also. Mines been crashing constantly and I have no clue why. It passes all 03 and 05 benches, plays games perfectly, yet it likes to bomb out in 01 either right away or in the dragon test, take your pick. My 01 only works when I'm at stock, so I've given up on 01 since I'm not testing my system speed im trying to test my graphics card.

cantankerous: your card might be having problem. I did mention some artifact which i encounter during my game play. It started to appear on BF2 and lately HL2 lost coast... so i did abit of troubleshooting. Reverting back to 5.10a, try out with the driver from the cd.... all to no avail.... so in the end i went back to the shop to change a new card. And my problem is solve...
what exactly i saw is square square funny things appearing on my screen... on the HL2 is even worst when i enable HDR. I assume x1800xl is a very fragile card which need extra attention when ocing... i don't intend to o/c it anymore, as now i got no problem playing games on max setting.

check the right side, that with bloom effect enabled in a game, its ok, until i enable AA, then it shows these funny effects on sides depends on what you see. If i enabled it in farcry .. AA .. it was similar, at least with X800, dont have FC anymore, and cant reproduce this rainbow in 3D Mark 05 you seen yet.

Yea, it is really damn annoying to say the least. I too can pass 03, 05, aquamark and games without issue but 01 keeps crashing to desktop showing no trace that it was even running to begin with. I would leave the room for a bit, come back and bam, gone. For the first 3 days I had this card I was looping 01 for hours on end with no issues. As soon as I started getting issues with the card graphically 01 stopped completing 100% of the time. Either way I just installed my two 74GB raptors and formatted again to a fresh install. Just finishing my driver installs then am going to see what I come up with. I will post back here when I have results which I hope are going to be favourable. I really do appreciate EVERYONE who is responding to my posts and helping me out. I really do appreciate it greatly so thank you kindly to all.

An RMA is the last thing I want to do on this card being only 5 days old considering it 'was' running so well, however, if need be then I will have to do it. This is really disheartening.

Thanks for taking the time to take a picture. I do see what you mean however it is far worse on my screen and considering I have no such bloom options in 05 the problem must lie elsewhere. As I said above my new install is about complete so will be testing for the rest of the night with updates being posted here. I do think these cards can be quite finicky to say the least and the more issues I have the more I wish I waited for an XT but we will see. The card runs fantastic when all is going well and as should.

I just got yesterday X1800XL Sapphire and I'm stuck on GPU 600MHz(1.175V) MEM 660MHz(default V) above those values I have artifacts ects. It's strange that I had yesterday 640MHz GPU(1.3V) and 700MHz MEM (2.0V) :rolleyes: .I'm waiting for Vga Silencer@X1800 I hope it'll works...

Nice, but don't shoot to 1.3V! The heat output from the cards is decent and putting that much more on a stock cooler isn't wise.

A reason why you might not be hitting the same clocks is because you ran a few tests before you got to that speed, warming up the GPU core to accept that new clock.

nice, but did you really need that much voltage on the ram? Most can get that or above on stock 1.90 or maybe 1.95 just for a small boost. I may be ignorant but 2.05 seems like a lot.

I can hit 820 with default mem voltage if my vcore is up to 1.3V+ But then again it might be hurting my overall OC too on the core at that point.

I dont understand it, my CPU is 300mhz above his, my card has the same mem clocks, but 40mhz more on the core, and my score is still under his? Whats going on O_oa ive tryed everything, all my settings are set to max performance, im using 5.11 WHQL's, all outta ideas =( is it the 1.5GB of ram? should i bench it with 512? how much difference would that make in 3dmark05?

Is it possible to post your system specs in your sig at all? Make helping you out a little easier. Is your ram OC'ed? Are you using 3 sticks or 4 sticks of ram?

As for why his is faster no clue. I mean I got 200Mhz more on your CPU but similar clocks on the card and I get 8.6k.

I think i figured it out, the mobo was defaulting the ram to 6:5 divider, i set it 1:1 and got 8230. My CPU is socket 754 btw, DFI nforce 4 infinity mobo. I'm using 3 sticks of 512 each.

Add that to your sig ;)

Does the mobo support dual channel? If so using 3 sticks is killing your preformance which would also hurt your score.

Gavinni : i got same problem, lower score, it was SP2 and hotfixes that decreased score, dont ask me why, not sure what problem could be with yours system since you only got SP1, but i reinstalled windows, didnt installed any SP and score you seen down.

Deathman, pls post temps under load and speed that is your Zalman ( 5V or 12V ) running. THX

12V with extra 120mm fan blowing on the card.
38C Idle with 62C Max Load

In Quake 4 I got it up to 48C Max load

I only know that 740mhz on mems i can´t do with 2.05v
At that voltage and that speed, i get artefacts :( :(

I didn´t try 730mhz @ 1.90v but it probably works well :) :)
