OK, here is the story. I tried and set the affinities with the task manager like you suggested. SP2000 still did not run the second test on mixed. I then tried SuperPi and got this error on the 2nd window: NOT CONVERGENT IN SQR05.

I then turned off all overclocks and ran on optimized defaults and got the same error. This was on the same memory that had no errors on Memtest x 10 hrs.

Did you have any memory tweaks at all, or just Auto? Maybe try manual on the memory and make it loose....

Could just be bad cpu memory controller...

From what i've read, you can't run dual superpi from the same folder, you need to make a copy of the original folder and run each from separate copies. i just got my first dual core today, so i haven't tried it yet.

OK, that did the trick. I am an idiot. Now anyone else have any thoughts on my Prime95 issue?? I am running Prime 95 off two different folders, but I get only one to run Prime95 on mixed, while the other just stays on test 1, no crash, just no forward progress.

Just do the CPU test and forget about the mixed. Narrow down the problem first. I'm very much interested in results as well since I have the same memory in my wish list to buy next week....

Just use your single install of Prime95. Have 2 shortcuts on the desktop, and edit the properties to them. At the end of the traget use: -A0 and -A1 for cores 0 and 1.

example: "C:\Program Files\Prime95\Prime95.exe" -A1

then open the first prime for core 0, goto Advanced>Affinity, and set it to core 0. then open the other shortcut, for core 1, and set that one to core 1.

Let me tell you running dual core Prime95 on mixed with one stick of 512 takes a long time. It is still one test one for both cores on no overclock after 30 minutes.

Just got my new shtuff in today -- DFI SLI-DR Expert board, Opteron 170, TT Big Typhoon, and 1GB kit of Geil One RAM.

Will be benching and comparing the Opteron 170 and Opteron 146 at stock and OC levels with stock and OC 3500+. I will be running fresh installs of Windows for all tests, and 2 7800GT's in SLI for the video. Hopefully I won't toast anything, though I don't plan on going that high any part.

I will post my results as soon as they are all done.

Well my 170 oem from Monarch turned out to be a CCBWE 0534 SPMW, so far i am up to 1.55V trying to get it dual prime95 small fft stable at 2.7GHz. Hopefully my last vcore bump made core 0 happy.

Bastard are holding on to the good ones... I know it. I had the most horrible experience with them last week when I cancelled an order and still waiting for the refund. No replies whatsover. Wow, what a phuckin dud man, i cant believe it.. 1.40V needed to hit 2400 on water. The LOAD temps are crazy at any other voltage! Ive tried mounting and remounting the block several times and different pressure settings while live under load.

OK, the mixed test is still not working. The CPU and memory tests ran fine. I watched the task manager and both cores were at 100% during the small and large tests, but during the blend test the task manager is at 50 percent. What gives?????

This is without any overclocking. SuperPi ran fine at 4m and 8m.

Thanks for this tip. Very helpful. Once the system is setup, do you usually assign a core for each application, so you can run simultaneous operations?

ok a little update. when i initially ran my 2.8 test @ 1.344v i had the ram clocked way down to ensure it wouldnt interfere with the test. i then put it back up to 150/200 multi to get 200mhz 2-3-3-5 and started testing with prime95. core 0 would fail within a minute, core 1 was fine. i started superpi 32m and it locked up the system a couple of minutes into it. i guess the increased ram frequency put more strain on the memory controller. so i bumped the voltage up to 1.36v (1.40v in bios) and all is good.

Now this is getting weird... I can't really make any sense of what's going on.

Anyway... these Opterons are the bomb. I've never had this much fun since AMD Palomino 1700!. I'm running 2.5 24/7 and I'm not hitting 40 under double Prime with my CNPS9500 (30-31 idle). The one that I'm building for my office will have XP-120 to see how well that one does. Same stepping 170 and I hope to get it to work just like this one...

Here, do this. Install Prime95 twice, one is Prime95_1 and one in Prime95_2
open both of them. Go to Advance -> Affinity -> set one of them to 0 and Set another to 1.

Now, go to Option ->Torture Test -> but instead of running blend click on custom. Set Memory to Use to 300MB for both. Try everything on stock before you OC.

Well I got my Opty 170 (0530 TPMW) from Mwave today and have been messing with it. I think I have figured out my Gskill memory that is rated 2.5-4-4-8 at DDR600 2.9V won't do that. My processor will run 9x300 all day if I set the memory divider to 9:10. Otherwise my system is very instable and crashes alot. I will post the screen shot of what I do have, just remember memory is running at 270FSB and not the 300 that CPUZ shows.

Here is what I have. I think the numbers are looking appropriate. I tried running the King Kong game demo, but the mouse was acting very peculiar. It kept dragging to the left top corner.

well so far i got my 165 up at 2.7 currently priming. screenshots when i get it a full 24 hours. but not to shabby for only 1.5vcore. i tell you this chip with vx is a pita. ive never had so many memory problems when trying to overclock a chip as i did with this guy.

1. Check memory usage in task mgr while run 2xprime blend. Is Page file Bigger than mem? is mem avail <40M?

2. Blend defaults to 766 mb IIRC, 2 x that > 1G, thus MASSIVE DISK THRASHING (IS HD Light ON ALL THE TIME?)
That would explain 2nd prime run hanging in blend.

3. If above is true, run custom and set mem used = mem installed /2 - 30mb (rough rule of thumb), for EACH prime instance.

4. If still low mem avail, try again and reduce further until 40 mb avail,

5. NOW You can start seeing if you CPU is working or not :D

Now my question is what is the max voltage everyone is comfortable with on these boards with the incorrect read out? Right now I am happy with 1.3 - 1.4v running 2.5. I would like to try for 2.7, but I am nervous about the reports of sudden system death.

My limit on my X2 'Indabsmt' = 1.5 or 1.475x.104%

Assuming it can do it, keep this running for 48hrs, (DEEP BURNIN)
Then try to knock the Vcore back a notch and see if it works (50% chance 1st time) keep doing that until it passes @ least one prime 'psuedoblend' cycle (usually about 10hrs) running on both cores. THEN start moving up the FSB. I find My CPU's seem to like doing more AFTER about 2 weeks :shrug: (I just let it run @ max that will work on stock vcore until then, otherwise I get frustrated :upset: )

My Opty 170 for example has been running @ 270x10 @ stock and after I get my 'indabsmt' overhauled ((x2 @ 10x270, 1.5Vcore, Pile of stuff sitting waiting to be stuck in, WC + OCZ 600, etc) I want to push this one up (been busy in D2oL land, go take a look :D )

I hope to get it up to 280 285 x 10 b4 Vcore = 1.5 (I WC the Opty also, load temp = 31c w/ 2xD2OL ). I do all kinds of obsessive stuff to get cool (NO IHS + LAP CPU :shock: ) to get the temps I have but I think it's worth it :D )

Once this is up to your best cross between expectation and reality, you should run D2OL in the background (Go look in the forum to see what it's all about and if you like the idea, get back to me and I will help you get setup for max output while still being able to do what you want on your PC :D )

Do you mean my chipset voltage? I got that recommendation from Andy from bleedingedge.com for using my OCZ memory. If lowering it is better, then I'll give it a try. Let me know.

i agree with mad mikee, i was running 300fsb on my venice no problem with stock chipset voltage.

Everyone's is different, I am running 2 G ballistix @ 270 w/ defaults for example (so far :D )

Try one must to confirm if what he seeks is possible (Yoda-eese, for TRY IT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS (MEMTEST # 5 & 8 for 10 runs each first :D )) If have always had more instability when up those voltages vs. defaults :shrug: TEST TEST TEST for the BEST performance, no substitute for that, sorry.

Currently running the modified mixed test on Prime with 1.5v on chipset. Will see what happens after 4-5 hrs. Thanks.

Prime running for 4 hrs, no errors so far.

I just finished reinstalling windows XP MCE 2005 on my SATA WD 160 GB drive. I was happy after running prime95 with dual cpus for several hours. Now I am getting things up and running.

Thanks for all the help. I will keep trying to OC, but I think I want to enjoy this 2.5 cpu for a little while at the current settings. :toast:

errr.. I just ordered one.

prime95 large, these are borderline stable settings for my crappy ram. 2.7ghz performs the same @ stock volts but but the ram can't handle 166/200 x 270 and 150/200 only gives me 190mhz. the dfi nf4 overvolting issue has me worried. supposedly these 110w opterons are really getting up to .11v more at load than cpu-z reports. 2.8ghz failed prime at 1.366 (passed superpi 32m), that could really be 1.47 so i dont know if i should push it further. i'm content with 2.7@1.31v and dont want to kill the 0530.

what are the best prime settings to use?

i have problem. i was doing some math trying to figure out the best fsb-ram multi-timings combination and noticed something weird. 267fsb x (150/200)= 200.25 but cpu-z shows 190.8! basic algebra tells me that to get 190.8mhz on the ram with 150/200 multi i need 254.4 fsb, not 267. WTF?

update:
i ran memtest and it also showed 190mhz. then i tried 280fsb with the same 150/200 multi and it showed 200, but according to my calculator 280 x (150/200) = 210 ! am i missing something here?

I was hoping for an 0530 TPMW, but got an 0541 RPMW instead :( 2.6 on air might not be as easy I thought it would be, with this stepping :stick:
Gonna pop her in now and let this AS5 run through a few thermal cycles before I start messing with o/cing. Let's hope this Zalman 9500 really is the best air cooler on the market. Just for reference: I'm seeing 25 degrees C load temps on my Winnie 3000 @ stock right now (was 41 degrees C @ 2.43GHz and 1.75V :slapass: ) no way am I gonna risk this Opty by pushing the vcore that high. I think 1.5 will be the limit this time around.

i got a 0530 tpmw from mwave wednesday (ordered sunday, shipped monday), but bigjons got a 0536 so they might have run out.

There have been no official results on the 0536 yet... and 0536*what* would be nice to know.

I got my 0530 today from a different source. The 0530's from Monarch are random. I ordered a OEM before shiznit and got a 0534 =/

Anyway, currently priming 2.6 GHz @ 1.31V, I'm having a lot of problems getting 2.9 GHz stable even at 1.55V. I'm getting a 2GB set of G.Skill ZX ram tomorrow to replace my Corsair XMS...

Anyone post screenshots of prime stable 2.9-3 GHZ 0530's a64 tweaker settings?

shiznit..that's because he's used to the intel memory ratio mentality.

The athlon 64 memory clock is ALWAYS mem speed = cpu speed / memory divider.


what happens is when you select a memory speed in the bios...the cpu picks a memory divider that would be the closest for that cpu multiplier (it assumes 200 fsb).


EG.


2000 mhz cpu = 200 x 10.
for 200 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2000/10 = 200 mhz
for 183 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2000/11 = 181.8 mhz
for 166 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2000/12 = 166 mhz
for 133 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2000/15 = 133 mhz


but say change that to a 2200 mhz cpu (200 x 11).
for 200 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2200/11 = 200 mhz
for 183 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2200/12 = 183 mhz
for 166 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2200/14 = 157.1 mhz
for 133 mhz memory it picks a mem divider of 2200/17 = 127.4 mhz


the a64 will never pick a divider that will put the mem clock over the "target" speed.

This is the same reason why "running a divider" doesn't hurt a64 performance much...it's always running a divider...because the memory is still in sync..and still fairly low latency. It's always direct with the cpu.

In your case..the cpu has picked a 14 divider.

lol, im not used to intel mentality, my last intel was the celeron 300a. i just didnt know about the cpu/x thing, i figured fsb x ratio = ram speed. now i undertand, i was always wondering what the cpu/x meant in cpu-z. thank you.

yea..but that's how you calc mem speed on intel platforms =P

it all makes sense now, integrated mem controller and the ram speed is derived from cpu speed, not from the northbridge. and thats why no penalty for using multipliers. thank you for explaining that. AMD is the shiznit.

I think my results seem pretty weak compared to the other 0530s.. =T What other results have people gotten at the same voltage (Using Prime, not SuperPi)

My 165 could do 2.5 GHz @ the same voltage.

actually i did it with large, i'm doing it again right now because i forgot to take a screenshot last time. after how much time running prime would you consider it "stable"?

anyone running VX with these chips. im having a terrible time getting it to work well with my vx.

I've been scouring this thread for a while now and haven't turned up many results from the 180's. What's the average OC on these? Mine shows up monday and I don't quite know what to expect from it yet. Thanks!

Is there a big difference in overclocking between 165 and 170?

hmmm, i can get a 165 with the CCBWE 0534SPMW code, do you guys think it's worth it?
or should i just wait until i can get a 170 :stick: (from what i've seen the 170's seem to clock slightly higher :shrug: )
i'm thinking of putting together a second system, but these opterons are pretty hard to get hold of :(

Thats the piece of crap i just sent back. From the gate, it ran way to hot.. At stock speed, over 62C with 2 SP2004's going. Stock voltage too. I remounted the block several times and no change.. So, it was sent back. That stepping is horrible.. I got no more than 2.4, the other guy here i think got 2.58 or something. Check back a few pages and you will see.

We're poor people here... talk under 400 :D. I think that I noticed one 180 OC post with shots on the fist pages on this thread or the other Opteron thread. If I'm not mistaken it went up to 2.7 or 2.9 or so.

How many volts does it take for your Opteron to be dual prime stable at 2.8 GHz?

Priming at 2.8 @ 1.43V right now.

I tried 1.36 (1.40 in bios) and core 0 fails after a minute or so. Temps were 50c, and i didn't want to push it any further in light of the dfi overvolting issue. 2.7@1.312 will have to do :D at least until i get an asus a8n32sli with the 8-phase power regulation.

Newegg now has 170 and DFI Expert boards in stock... grab yourself one fast if you haven't already. DFI Expert shows up as 209.00 in the listing but when you add it to your card it drops to 199.00.

Its gonna be the luck of the draw for results.. some 165s can oc past 170s and the 170s SHOULD oc better than the 165s. I really haven't seen great differences between oc results of these cpus. The only great numbers I've really noticed was from cooling. Thats why I'm getting a 170 and using it under phase. But as far as the 165 vs the 170, the 10x multiplier is a huge selling point if you're gonna oc.

Did they fix the problem with the eXpert boards? Last I heard, it was only ASUS that revised.

Running dual core Prime95, stable at 15.5 hours. Sweet!!!! Temps - highest 45C.

how are you guys getting the correct readings on cpu-z? i downloaded the newest version and it still shows my chip as a 280 series ?? this is wierd cause i see some of you guys with the correct readings in cpu-z...

ok guys got my optie 180 in the mail today. just got off work and poped it in. im going to start off by seeing how high i can over clock this at its defualt v-core so here is the first attempt 230x12 1.31v 2761mhz now i need to go prime it and see if its stable... the chip is a 0530TPMW for those keeping track...

this has got to be the worse maxcase temp reading out of all my chips! sure hope its not an indacation of how this thing will oc!

Speak for yourself, mine's doing wonderfully and runs extremely cool.. I got 293x9 on stock 1.4 voltage prime stable for 9 hours (~35C). I haven't tried anything further yet, mainly because I'm going on vacation tomorrow and I want to run CPUburn while I'm away. Now undervolted to 1.1v prime stable with a 25C load temp on BT.

I've always thought this was the second best stepping after the 0530's. One guy on EOCF got his from same place as me at the same time and we're having similar results.

Crap :( got a 541RMW, no fun! Can't really test it since it's on a NF3 Ultra-D... seemed to do 2.2 @ 1.22v on stock HSF.

i just got mine setup. quick question...what is LDT Bus Transfer Width? and what should i set it at?

if i change anything in bios (i turned FSB to 233 since i have PC3700 ram, touched nothing else), it won't make it into windows...so i'm wondering if its that.

you should leave LDT Bus Transfer Width at default

so i dunno what i'm doing wrong then. i can get it to overclock if i leave multipliers (both FSB/LDT) at Auto and dram frequency at SPD (which ends up being 1:1).

the dram frequency menu just confuses the :banana::banana::banana::banana: outta me since the speeds it lists seem to be based with 200 fsb. (i.e, 200=RAM/FSB:1:1 or something crazy like that, what's that mean? why can't they just say 1:1)

how much AS5 did you use? you should only put like a rice grain's worth in the center of the chip, then install the heatsink. my 170 0530 2.7ghz 1.312v never went over 44c in two hours of dual prime large, and the fan on my xp-120 runs at 7v.

Damn, why is everyone having such a hard time with temps? I know mine are reported wrong, but I'm 5C below ambient at idle :lol:

Anyway this chip is looking good undervolted, I'm at 1.125 right now at 2115MHz seemingly stable. It's been priming for like 45 minutes here. The whole point of me doing this (undervolting) is to find a low vcore unstable speed for burn in, but strangely enough, even at 1.8GHz the volts can't go below 1.125 or it won't boot.. I think my mobo sucks though since it every once in a while it freezes in the BIOS, and I get the stupid flashing line in the corner sometimes at boot up.. Right now it's 235x9 (prime 45mins so far) but I got random reboots and even firefox crashed at 237x9.. WTF?

that cant be the reason then, i would suggest taking the heatsink off and checking what kind of contact it made with the cpu. beyond that i have now idea, you heatsink could be a lemon (not so sure if this is possible lol).

Is it dangerous to continue testing at these temperatures?

Just ran 18 minutes of prime @ 1.55v 2.75ghz on my 146 cooled by big typhoon with a 129CFM delta, IHS off chip, 34C load :D Had to restart because of x-fi drivers. Chip seems stable here. My core 0 will do 2.9ghz according to jason but core 1 flat out SUCKS, failing prime instantly at 2.8ghz 1.6v while core 0 can do 2.8ghz prime with 1.55v.

i don't use the suggested way, with the BB and all. i get a piece of plastic bag, and rub a nice thin layer over the whole top of the IHS with my finger wrapped in plastic. i then smear some into the bottum of the heatsink - very thin so you can barely know it's there. and then i proceed to put the heatsink on.

my reason, is i've done the bb method, and it doesn't expand out to the whole heatsink. it might cover the whole core area, but i want maximum contact between my IHS and heatsink, not just a circular pattern.

i dunno if i am the only one that does this, but i've always done it this way with cpus w/ IHS. if it were a bare core, i would do the bb method, cause it would cover the whole core. Not that i am suggesting anyone to do it my way ;)
