Haha. To be honest, I've been running these folding clients pretty much non-stop give or take some recent down time here and there for mods and the like, but it's starting to get in the way of other things, like; ripping, backups, work, etc. Adding another pc to the fold (pun intended) will relieve some of the pressure on my Main machine. ;) and allow me to shutdown clients during work hours... guilt free :)

An example, I want to shutdown Main to rearrange some cabling, but I hesitate because it has 'ONLY 3 HOURS TO GO' on a WU. This frame of mind is not good! ;) haha.

ps. I do enjoy our seemingly evenly matched competition and, for this reason also, I hesitate to tip the balance ;)

lol..thats exactly why I cant wait to get my local network running.

Hey Guys, I'd like to reiterate my earlier query:

"I don't seem to have received a 600 pointer for ages. I thought my settings should be enforcing/encouraging these projects.

-svcstart -local -advmethods -forceasm -verbosity 9

Does all this seem normal to you guys?"

Two more completed WU's now and two more 153 pointers downloaded!?!

Can anyone confirm that one or more of the above switches/options are causing this?

I am not using any of those options, and I am still getting many of the 77x projects. They just seem to be giving out a lot of those lately.

That happens every once in awhile I've noticed. Got very frustrating a couple months ago.

I got a 1GHz P3 system from ebay, not super powerful but all I could afford really - well, I actually can't afford anything but I did it anyway :rolleyes: All these systems (except 2) I have in my dorm room, and the one side is kinda full of computers :D Heh this winter I probably will just shut off the thermostat, heck might even need to open the window to cool it off in there every once in awhile :lol2:

Thanks guys for the info on options. I'm doing some 'trialling' now.

Another query though, what do you guys specify for 'memory allocation' in the config for dual-core/thread machines? For instance, the D805 has only a single stick of RAM-1GB. I just reconfigured it to use 500MB for each instance/machine id rather than the default of 1023MB. Does this make sense to you guys?

Some hopefully useful info on the options/points situation:

I've been getting project 18xx & 24xx on all my machines, the xeons have two 2124's (396pts) even though once of those clients has BigWU enabled & the other does not; it also has an 1862(535pts) & an 1814(153pts) on default option clients.

Core2 has an 1808(153pts) & a 2408(600pts) with just BigWU option enabled.

Opty has an 1814(153pts) with BigWU enabled (iirc). None of the machines have -advmethods on currently.

So there doesn't seem to be much correlation between these options and the projects assigned. More of a 'random' thing (as others have suggested). :rolleyes:

Interestingly, something must be wrong with 'Server' instance 1 as HTPC has picked up a 772 and is processing at a rate of 116.4ppd compared to the ridiculous 24.32ppd of Server !?! :eek:

Have a look through the log and see if it indicates any sent or unsent WUs. If it failed to send it then, it will keep trying periodically.

Okay, I've resolved the issue. Server is now processing the 772 at 86ppd!

I am not exactly sure what went on but I believe I may have had a console version running in addition to the two service instances. Very strange, but I checked Task Manager and I noticed three instances of a FahCore_XX.exe. I 'stopped' the two service instances and then 'end process' on any other 'Fah...' processes. Rebooted the machine, stopped both Services and then ran '-configonly' and then manually restarted both Services.

All seems to be good now.

@Rmc, HTPC missed on out on 8hrs of processing last night. Damn! ;)

Had LAN problems that I didn't feel like fixing so my P4 was offline... just got it back up. It submitted a 149 pointer, I have a 600 coming in soon, along with 2 396 pointers on Tuesday.

I wish I could break out and take a commanding lead, but we are so evenly matched... :p: :rolleyes:

I don't know if you've noticed but we used to have the same number of WUs. This has changed drastically recently 41 vs 50. Still nothing greater than 153pts in well over a week for me! :mad: Despite the stats, I worked out my 24avg should be somewhere hovering just above 700.

Within the next 24hrs I should submit another 608pts. There was 153pts earlier today but I'm not sure that is within the 24hr period. So... I think you'll be skipping ahead very soon.... :shakes:

On the bright side though, we'll both be in the top 25 in 90days and we'll be shaking hands with SparkyJJo in just over 30days!!! :woot:

...however, we've got company coming right up our backsides; 'nemin' and 'parwyn' will be close enough to :kissbutt: (ours) at 60days! ...oh dear :shakes:

Thanks sc00p & @ GAM - I would leave my machines on but I'm a paranoid android & having had a PSU burn-out before I don't think I could relax on holiday with the machines on!

edit> don't think I'd run a pentium-450 here, but I suppose you could do a few days on it & see how it gets on? My slowest 24/7 box is an Axp1800+ iirc.

When my antec psu toasted itself it was chuffing out an acrid smoky smell & was soo hot I could barely get near the psu housing :eek: Once I pulled the plug to let it cool it just seemed to get hotter still since there was no airflow, ripped it out & threw it into the garden asap.

Hence the paranioa :D

I'm going to finish up a 2124 (396 points) in about 5 hours. Then I have a 773 (44 points), then a 772 (139 points), and another 2124 (in order). The two system at home I have are working on a 396 pointer I believe it is and then a smaller one, I think a 774 or something like that.

After this first 2124 is done on my main system I'm switching it totally over to GPU, rack up the points faster that way :D

*EDIT* Hey click on my stats pic, look at that graph, isn't that sweet? And look, no threats either, and after this week we will have moved up 4 ranks! :woot:

*EDIT2* I pulled away a little more GAM, now it is 80 days before you overtake me :p: And I'm gonna be packing on another system beginning of next week, plus full-time GPU folding. I might stay ahead yet :D

yeah 2 of my systems have 772's as well :( They take forever for the tiny amount of points you get out of them. For something that small it should take 24 hours MAX

Still no 77x's here - all 18xx & 24xx's; can't complain the ppd seems about what I'd expect - an old rig I hadn't fired up for a while had a 772 iirc, but I dumped that and got an 153 pointer instead.

F&H Forum down? I get a blank page whenever I try to access it.

I wanted to see what I could find on these damn 772/773's.

I've now got a total of 10 WUs each (yeah, that's 20!) and they're still comin'.... :shakes:

One thing I did notice though, these WUs have no Final Deadline. I've double-checked and even 'reconfigured' my clients and I don't have that value set, i.e., I am not limiting the client to download WUs without final deadlines.

I don't get it, can I really be that unlucky? Or do they think that I am only good for 772's n 773's ;)

These 772/773/774's come through in a group every so often and don't have deadlines, nothing really you can do to keep them from coming in when they have a huge batch they send out.

...they have a temporary cache of some kind to help people who get the blank page instead of the forum come up. One thing I've been doing recently is setting the core priority to low, instead of idle - I doubt this affects what WU is issued, but it might be worth a go (I leave the deadline WU to 'no-pref') :confused:

Thanks Jimwah but, I'm not a member so, no good for me for the moment. :)

Funny you should mention core priority, because I've fiddled with these recently too. For instance, I've now set; 'low' for Server and HTPC, which are rarely accessed; and 'idle' for Main, which I am using all day. ;) From memory, the default is 'idle'.
I agree, this shouldn't affect the type of WUs in any way. Besides, if you've changed yours to 'low' and you are not getting the 77x's, then this pretty much concludes it.

@garnin, sorry to hear. Have you had anything else in between recently? My tally is now:

The last 20 or thereabouts have come one after the other with nothing else in between and I am working on 6 of them now!!!

I have been getting my fair share of 772's as well, but it doesn't look like its as bad as yours GAM... probably the reason i'm in the lead for now. I've still landed some 600 point WUs here and there. I'll be eclipsing 15,000 points on my next WU completion most likely, and will be in the Top 50 soon. :)

I am debating about selling my P4, and building up one of these:

Pentium D 805 (Oc'ed to maybe 3.0 or 3.2, nothing major)
~1 GB RAM
ATI X1950 Pro (When they come out... should be great value for GPU folding)

And then running one instance of CPU folding and one instance of GPU folding... could be a big boost in PPD. :) Still thinking about it though...

Okay people, I'm confident I have identified the reason for all these 772's n 3's I've been getting.

I did a little investigative research and discovered the following in all my logs:
[16:51:36] - Connecting to assignment server

[16:51:57] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[16:51:57] + Could not connect to Assignment Server
[16:51:57] Connecting to http://assign2.stanford.edu:80/

Despite having a port filter set for port 8080, for some reason the router wasn't letting these through and hence, F@H would try Assignment Server 2 on port 80! This server must be set up to give out these projects preferentially.

I respecified the port filter, saved the config to flash and rebooted the modem/router.

Lo and behold, at the end of the next WU I got the following:

I'm still getting all 772/773's. I've decided to shut down one of my cores and set-up catalyst 6.10 so I can try GPU folding.

I'm at 48% right now on my x1900xt and it takes about 8 min per frame. Right now, it's running relatively cool (60 C) and I want to try to take it above the 2D speeds (500/594) and try to make better times. Does anyone know how? I don't have anything installed besides the Catalyst control center. Thanks

Man I keep getting 772/773's now too, they are the worst. I've done like 10 on the C2D machine alone lol, it gets a solid 235ppd on p772 (3.0GHz allendale). I've gotten a few other proteins most are like 200-300ppd, but holy crap p1495 is ~1000ppd! I've only done 1 on this machine i think, at least since I found fahmon, but it was 985 avg. 1027 min ! I know its a "bonus" WU but geez thats crazy. My P4 2.8GHz did one at only 320ppd.

@Garnin here's my experience so far with GPU folding. I use this ATITool_0.25b14 because they changed the way clocks are set somehow in this latest one, ATITool 0.25 Beta 16 pre3. It seems like 20sec/frame slower at the same clock settings, but I haven't played around with beta 16 much so maby you can get even higher clocks to make up for the loss. There's also ATITray Tools, but I haven't tried that at all.

Anyway for ATITool, make sure you click yes to kill ati hotkey poller service. Then you HAVE TO CHANGE VOLTAGE FIRST (I found that out the hard way heh). Make a new profile, then click Settings in lower right. At the top pull down choose vVoltage Control , set VGPU to 1.400 (stock 3D voltage, 1.175 is stock 2D voltage), make sure to click APPLY. Might want to change fan settings too, top pulldown menu choose Fan Control. I really like Dynamic based on GPU temp, I have set 70C and up at 77% 85C at 100% just to be safe, temp never goes above 75C though.
Ok so once you set voltage, then overclock core and run artifact scan until either it glitches or windows crashes. Dont use find max core/mem its REALLY buggy. I can get 675 core at stock volts but it crashes above 80C.. I'm still on stock cooling, so i run 675 core at 1.425 vGPU even though temp never goes above 75C just want to be safe, its stable up to 89C with that voltage. My memory sucks and I cant get over 800 so I'm running 774 on mem clocks.
At 675/774 if i'm not doing anything at all on comp I get 5:57 a frame. So thats like.. almost 800ppd for the graphics card now that points are worth 330 :D

Ok now the bad news. I have to be really really careful. I'm still on 6.5 Catalyst so maby its different with 6.10 and maby beta 16 atitool, but I cant open anything that uses video overlay. I think somehow the driver sets 2D voltage again and then of course a horrible crash of green bars everywhere. I cant even play FEAR with atitool overclock because it somehow uses overlay i think.. I can play splintercell fine though so I know its 3D stable. I can even see right when I open fear it flickers like its detecting a 3D or video app. wich shouldnt happen with ATITool running. Plus I can't use Overdrive in CCC anymore its just 000 for mem and core clocks.. lol. Oh well, at least I can fold at these clocks, and thats all that matters right now ;) .

I might try tray tools, but i have a feeling it has the same problem.

I went away for the weekend and Main crashed (recent overclock changes not stable unfortunately). One core was up to 97% for 600pts and 'checksum failed', restarting from first... :(

To top it off, my wife shutdown both Server and Main. Double damn! They've been off for 36hrs :sob:

@Rmc, I don't think I'll be catching you now :shakes:

Well I have my new toy to hook up :D Pretty soon I'll have 5 systems in my dorm + 2 at home folding :D

Maybe I'll get this other system working once I test out this CPU and mobo I picked up.. hmm....

I got a crazy idea though, when I move out of this dorm room for winter break I kind of want to take all my folders with me so my production doesn't slack off. But carrying 5-6 systems could be a pain. Hmm, what if I got a big box and stuffed 5 of the systems in it.... :rolleyes: Just PSUs, mobo/CPU/RAM, and HDs. Just might work....

No sure i follow you on the 'big box' idea. Do you mean simply for transport? And, btw, what's this new system you're putting together?

Fold4 is now crunching :D 1GHz P3, 256MB RAM. Sure not the fastest around but hey I can't really afford much. Still can crunch tho!

If I do my "big Box" idea you'll just have to wait for pics, it is kind of hard to explain. But it wouldn't just be for transport, that would be their actual case.

@Rmc, I don't know whether you're concerned with the lead I have taken over the last day or so, but I wanted to assure that you needn't worry :hehe:

I had several 600 pointers just waiting to finish after the issues I had, which finally came through and bolstered me to the lead. Nothing but 150's at the moment and I don't expect anything more than 460pts in the next 24hrs ;)

@All, FYI, 2125 and 1862 suck, particularly on Server (P4 3.0). PPDs are 67 for 392pts (6 days!) and 83 for 535pts (8 days!!!), respectively. :shakes: P4's suck compared to the D's and C2D's!!! I really empathise with all you guys with these older CPU's. The difference in performance, in the folding arena at least, is astounding :eek:

More bad news :( I will have to quit folding on my Opteron setup (in signature) as it has caused some problems and will not shut down. I will end it in Task Manager, and 1 minute later it will return, and I really can't devote that much CPU power to it (100%) where as it's dominating everything I do! Good news is, I will continue to fold on my other desktop and my laptop while it's plugged in. And my 3rd desktop is being fixed ATM and will run F@H 24/7 also when it is reformatted.

LordofDoom, if you have the priority when you config it to idle it shouldn't dominate anything. Check your task manager, go to the core process and see what priority it is at. It should be at low, if it isn't that is why it seems to dominate. Honestly with my system I have not experienced any slowdown so I don't see why you would on yours. Heck I really don't notice much when I'm working with my 750MHz folding system. Something isn't set right.

I THINK I FIXED IT!! :D

Fold3 was crashing alot again. Got very annoying having to pull the plug and turn it back on a few times each day. One day it was crashing every hour, sometimes within 15 minutes.

Totally tore it down again, rebuilt it, and put a different HD in it. After some bumps (strange windows setup stall, VGA drivers not wanting to install) I got it back up and running, and guess what! It has been running CRASH FREE for over 60 hours! :woot:

Problem is when I reloaded the WU it had been working on got messed up - the checksum was bad or something. O well.

Hmm... the only thing different between when it was running fine and it crashed was I used remote desktop and installed everest. Could everest be the problem I wonder... Sounds strange but it is possible I guess. It is the only thing different.

Hmmm... :rolleyes: Funny you should mention all this. 'Server' has been crashing a lot lately until finally I lost a HD yesterday. Pretty pissed about it, but these things happen. Nothing too important but lots of effort on the contents.

Anyway, 'Main' is also rebooting randomly every day or so recently which I put down to recent OC, but I wasn't too sure about this and have noticed some connection with Everest, particularly on Server, however, Server also had three F@H Services running again which I thought I had rectified already :confused:

I'll be interested to hear your experiences now with Everest out of the equation.

Yeah it is odd if that does end up being the reason. fold1, fold2, fold4, my main system, and I'm pretty sure my parent's PC have everest installed and they have no trouble.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. It would be nice if that was the problem, it would finally be an end to this problem.

Ahh I'm tired I gotta get to bed, my fingers aren't responding to what I want them to type properly, I'm making alot of spelling mistakes and having to hit that backspace key alot :D

F@H shouldn't come back on if you "kill" in Task Manager only the Console... wait for a few seconds and the fah core will disappear also.
Haven't you tried to adjust how much utilization f@h takes from your system. It can be anything from 5% up to 100% which wasn't cool in your case.

Oh well... great that you didn't totally left our team :)

Best way to shut it down is to NOT use task manager because than essentially crashes it. Right click on my computer, go to manage, then services and applications > services and find the FAH entry. Double-click it and there will be start, stop, and pause buttons, and a dropdown box to select whether it is disabled or set to manual or automatic start when the system is turned on. Using this method shuts it down cleanly :)

I would suggest trying to keep it running at, say, 75% CPU usage (set up in the console) and have core priority as idle if you have trouble (don't use task manager to set this). Mine is - well, was until I started GPU - at idle with 100% usage and I saw no slowdowns. Some systems are different though.

Oh.... crap. Heat issues. I felt heat radiating from the front, side, and rear of fold4. Opened it up and it felt like an oven in there. It didn't have enough intake/exhaust fans for 24/7 load, and now the caps around the CPU are bulging :( They weren't that way when I got the system last weekend. They aren't totally bad yet but I probably should replace them soon, but in the meantime I thought OK I'll put a fan over them. Only spare fan I have in the dorm room has a 3-pin plug which is too short to reach to the open fan header.

So I opened fold2 to swap the 3-pin fan with a 4-pin fan in there. Fold2 had a bad hot spot which I put a fan in to cool off, which worked, but apparently I got to the hot spot too late. The PSU sits over top of that spot so I couldn't see that corner earlier. Well when I removed the PSU I saw that one of the caps there is leaking :(

Both systems are perfectly stable still, but I have some work to do to fix them before something bad happens. Figures too, I do have spare caps from a dead board, but they are 1500uF and the ones going bad in fold4 are 1200uF.... argh.

Fold2 has its bad cap replaced and is back online! :woot:
Fold4 has 4 of the bulging caps replaced and is bad online! :woot:

Fold2's bad cap was a 1500uF which I had here in the room. Amazing too, since all the other caps in that location were 2200uF or 1800uF. Fold4 has mostly 1200uF that are bulging but the 4 I replaced were 1500uF so I could replace those. Still has the bulging 1200uF left but I think I may have some back home. In the meantime I got a fan positioned over them to keep them cooled off. Hopefully they'll last until I can replace them.

I think I'm gonna build a case for these systems to hopefully eliminate the cooling problems. Neither of those two systems have the greatest designed cases for heavy cooling needs.

Well fold3 is still running no crashes for almost 40 hours. When it was crashing it would crash at least every 24 hours so this is a good sign. I'm thinking that system just doesn't like everest for some reason :rolleyes:

GAM, no harm in trying. Remove everest and see if that changes anything :)

BTW, fold2 and fold4 are still running no problems after their surgery :D

@Sparky, good to hear of the favourable results. Since the last reboot on Main, I drop back the OC from 435/3.5Ghz to 433/3.46Ghz. I left vCore @ 1.425v. Seems okay since then, but it hasn't had much more than 24hrs straight without manual reboot since then so, more time will tell.
What version of Everest are/were you running? For me, v3.01.715 on Main and v3.01.652 on Server.

Nemin... ugh. I enjoyed being above his production for a day, but that was all it lasted.

I'm not sure what your best rig is like, but the E6400 does the 2414/600's @ 540ppd avg. and 1815/153's @ around 200ppd. Double what the oc'd d805 does.

Probably won't stay there very long though but its cool to finally hit it at least once :cool: I think I had a 600 pointer and 381 pointer come in today from the 2 systems back home. Must have, because I've only gotten 1 GPU WU in today from what I have in my dorm (I have a GPU WU and 2 other WU's due tomorrow morning though).

I'm thinking of maybe getting a dual-core CPU so I can crunch GPU and 1 CPU on my desktop. It is money I really don't have much of though... What I would like to do is buy an X2 (or opty) for my desktop, buy a mobo/RAM/PSU for my current CPU and have that fold. But if I do go X2 I'll probably have to sell my 3700+ to make the X2 in reach :stick:

*EDIT* oh yeah, fold3 still hasn't crashed, yay! :woot:

I need to curb my spending though so I have some money left for school... And if I ever want to go watercooling I gotta save up for that as well. When f@h still had those QMDs... I believe iirc ~year ago we did some 80k days when Angra and Xciter was poinding away hard... I hope we haven't forgot to mention/thank Xciter about his efforts... and lost him :( Where would we be without Xciter also :fact:

Well I've come to the conclusion that fold3 hates everest for whatever reason. No problems at all with it since I removed it. Also speedfan seemed to cause problems as well, with both speedfan and everest installed it was a nightmare for a little while there.

I'm looking into buying an opty 165. If I do I'd like to keep my 3700+ and get a mobo/RAM/PSU for it to fold as well but I'd have to sell it in order to afford the opty. Any idea on what my 3700+ would be worth? I'm guessing around $75 or so?

crap. Woke up this morning and fold3 was hard locked again :( Seems to want to lock up once every 3 days now or so, which is better than once a day but still frustrating.
