Wow M8, great card you have there...

Guys I see some very good clocks there, are the newer cards clocking better than the earlier ones? Or just lucky?
:P
yes, just lucky but not whit the mem ?ned 1.7v=1.66v to run 1825:(

Yes , just luck...my sample is one from the first ones, but now they replace it, because of broken fan control.
I'm in the opposite to MartinVR, memory clocks like mad - 2000 pure stable@1.7V.
But due to the heat generated with stock cooler, long benches like UH, Vantage need to sacrifice some Mhz down to 1310-20 on the core.
Asus 7970 CU II 1000mhz
1200mhz 1.16v is required to stop it crashing at this clock speed then 1225mhz starts artifacting badly and extra v doesnt help
1650mhz mem any higher and it freezes tried 1.63v but it made no difference may try more latter
gpu temp tops out at ~50c with the fan at 100% vreg reach 70-80c
asic quality 75.1%
currently its detecting my dell u2711 as having a max res of 1920x1080 and wont let it go any higher over dvi but works fine with the same lead in a gtx480 tried a few drivers but it has made no difference
i was planing to put this card on water but i doubt it will help it go any higher :(
unless there is a vmod i can do that might make a difference when gpu v doesnt
maybe the cards pll solder point will help? without a asus rog x79 mb does anyone know if a vr soldered to that point may work if so what type 10k 20k 150k?

This might be slightly off-topic but how is the VRM cooling on the reference HD 7970 cards? With stock cooling that is. Seeing as the core temperatures look generally fine even with quite high overclocks on air I was curious about VRM temps. Are they fine too?
yes. Generally, VRM is 6-8 or so degrees celcius cooler than gpu under load with the stock cooler
So CFX result Sapphire reference stock air cooled cards + CPU on Air...still hot to bench 5100+ :(

Does everyone has this massive vdroop with the 7970's ?
I run core @ 1.038 in afterburner and VDCC drops to 0.955 under heavy load . Still stable at 1000mhz core though at that voltage .
925mhz core can be done with 1.000 afterburner (0.93-0.94 under load) .
The memory runs at 1.5V now , 1375mhz . But can do 1800mhz on stock 1.6V .
Anyway , i like things quiet :D so i run 1000/1375 . Because if i touch the memory it doesn't power save
Also , when I set memory to 685 in afterburner 2.2 beta14 , it doesn't stick . It keeps on 1375mhz .
I'd love an option to lower the memory during bitcoin mining .. And i'd even more love a bios editor like RBE which support 7970 . :p:
O , i have the XFX core edition version version 1.3 .

I have to test with asus bios test
but even if I can overclock with the bios, so jump on in every test, even without oc.
have tested for the 1400/1850 1.312 v/1.727v set with GPUtweak
performance is very poor with the BIOS, relative to the original
I am getting bad artifacting, and fan control drops to 50% even when set to 100% all when trying to overclock at all.
bad card time to RMA?
bios is asus, and drivers are the pre certified ones (12.2)
edit: it was the 12.2 pre certified drivers. I also flashed to the MSI bios (link below) as the asus bios has poor performance as Martin said.

thx and the voltage is 1.3v max in trixx and AB or 1.4v in gpu tweak ?

Is there an easy way now to get 1.4v vgpu ??
:)
with bios asus unlocked and gpu tweak .
http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/1...72.120104.html
but the frequencies do not switch all the time in 2d with this bios .
I'm able to get 1.4v with GPU tweak when running crossfire, but only 1.3v with a single card.
http://img.techpowerup.org/120228/Capture422190.jpg
Are the cards responding to 1.4v and clocks increasing proportionately?
:D
This special MSI bios allows my trifire 7970 to bench 3DM11 @ 1300 @ 1.29v, altho artifacts. Gaming is stable at 1.3v.
With Giga stock bios & Asus highest could achieve was 1275 only with whatever voltage.
Thus I think this MSI bios has better vdroop & more stable than the others.
My 7970 BE's just got delivered today. I dont normally OC cards but I may give these a try for some benching. I might give that MSI bios a try even though these run 1000MHz stock, I cant seem to clock them well even at 1.3v. Could be a driver issue, 3dm11 crashes my system when clocked to 1250 on the core.

Does anyone have a BIOS for the Asus DirectCU II version of the HD 7970 they'd be willing to share?
just uploaded one from HD7970-DC2T-3GD5 with gpu-z to techpowerup
im guessing it will show up on there site
my card can only hit 1200mhz and doesnt have a cutout on the backplate over the vrm like some of the newer ones not that it seems to make a difference
Is anyone playing with XFX BE's and having any luck? Or has anyone flashed BE's and had better luck? They rock stock, but I cant clock these things worth a damn.
Cool I'd try it lol.
I'm pretty happy with this cards abilities, I can run BF3 at 1.037v at 1000/1425 and gpuz says its .980v lol and I can run 1150/1600 on stock volts, 1.112 in AB and 1.05 or so in gpuz.

Just wanted to post some of my recent results on my MSI 7970 OC. A few days ago I got my koolace block and I have been able to finally put my gpu into my chilled water loop. Fortunately we had several days of dew points ~ -17C so I was able to push my card pretty much near its limits. I managed to get clocks of 1350/1775 on my core/mem respectively with 1.26/1.65 V. I was seeing idle temps ~ 2C and load ~ 20C.

I scored P17568 with an 3930K at 5.23GHz and 2 HD7970s X-Fired at 1156/1654 in 3DMark11.
So your score is comparable to mine.

asus 7970 dc2t is now on water
used a ek vga hf supreme universal gpu block that i had on my gtx480
it runs under 40c now but it only gained 25mhz overclock

any more and it just goes mad with artifacts even 1300mv makes no difference
posted temps and a bunch of pics here

vrm ran 105c stock cooling and now run 70c stock clocks 80c 1200mhz 1.160mv with vdrop to ~1.12v and can still hit 90c with 1275mv still at 1200mhz im afraid
not sure why the vrm is so hot gtx480 had a lesser vrm\heatplate and sucked much more power yet it was fine
the memory however well half the chips dont event touch the heatplate at all the plate is so badly made the thermal pad sits a few mm above them despite being screwed right down

I have tried:
1175 1625 at 1.150V, 60% stock fan, heavy load 50s, extreme load 60s, stock fan
Also, passes at 1.145V and 1.13V but with 1.13V I lose 0.5 FPS out of 50, so better to get a more stable voltage :)
Passed Crysis bench, Unigine, 3D Mark.
Tried (also)
1230 1650/25, at 1.2V (not tried the lowest) stock fan 70%, stock cooling, load temps around 60s or lower. Is like 3-4% faster than the previous setting at most. Just tested with Crysis benchmark at 25x14 V High no AA
This is a reference MSI 7970 with stock cooling.

Hi,
I benched all 3 of my cards over this weekend. My best result on water is 1330/1900/1.3V. I used Batman Arkham City to bench.
Once software voltage controls for 1.4V vGPU and RAM are fixed, I will return to this card.
Maximum tri-fire result was 1250/1600/1.3V, this was stable in all benchmarks.
1330/1900/1.3v benchmark result in Batman AC - 100fps avg. CPU is 4.7Ghz 3960k.

Does anyone know whether the VTX3D HD 7950 X-edition uses a CHIL 8228g vrm controller?
Whats the concensus on the model of 7970/50 to buy? Looking at all your results it seems that the 1.3V spot is good with good cooling.
If i had to choose my cards again, I would go for an MSI Lightning 7970 with EK block, backplate and IO Bracket.
Getting a 7970 which does over 1320/1850 on water is a lottery.
Been beating on my 2x 7950s with EK blocks for a bit, trying to clear 1275/1850. Highest full run was 1250/1850 @ 16313 3D11Performance. They're pushing 54C :O (although, that's with a 2600K @ 5.0 GHz/1.5V, lmao)
By the way, I have first place for 2x 7950s
EDIT: Full run on 1275/1850 successful! I'll try to squeeze a little more once the cards cool down, lmao.
