That is easy to say when you are sitting on a golden chip lol.

LOL, it is not acting so golden tonight.
Yeah, I'm afraid you may be right, because I've eliminated almost all other possibilities.
I've Installed the last working Nvidia driver (at least the last one i know about) 191.07 and the problem remains.
It is not acting like it needs Vcore, but I have never tried this chip in these speeds before. and going to take a closer look into Vcore.
My new cooler is really good, but not that good. I can't push 1.4v on air, I know you have been telling water water ;).
I can live with 1.36v or maybe push (and rub) it up to 1.37v for 24/7, but not over. I'll see how high OC i can push without burning the house, LOL.
What do you guys use for quick stability testing?
Right now I'm doing 2 passes Linx and 4 minutes of OCCT... is this sufficient to see if a certain voltage is good?
I'm possibly running "stable" right now 211x19 4ghz with 1.2v vcore / 1.2v vtt / 1.2v ich and ioh / 1.14v qpi pll.
What do you guys think? What's your method for quick stability testing? I mainly use the 2 passes Linx and 4 minutes OCCT to see around where I should I tweak for a serious 24/7 OC.
Stability for you own 24/7 use would depend on how demanding application you use.
But Primestable is a term, that the good old school OCing has been referring to minimum 8 hours of Prime stability.
Other stability tests are somehow new and unclear, but 1 hour OCCT, and 20 pass LinX have been used widely.
---------------------------
I have been playing with the 24/7 stability on x21 multi, and BCLK216 seams to be a major jump, at least for my CPU.
My CPU (which i really know it's normal behavior), acts like it has enough Vcore for 21x216, but adding other voltages won't stabilize the system.
Adding Vcore (within the expectations) doesn't help either. It seams to need much more Vcore from this point, but acts like it is missing something else.
I experienced the same behavior from BCLK226 with x19 multi too. I tried to get it stable @4.31GHZ (227x19), but never could stabilize it for 24/7, and couldn't figure what was wrong.
Both runs SuprPi32M and more .., feels fine and stable for light load, but gives BSOD 30 sec. into prime, LinX, or OCCT.
I think the MB plays a role in this behavior too, because the same CPU (and RAM) have been showing the same behavior on my good old DFI UT too, but on other BCLKS. I remember it was showing similar behavior when i was trying 19x216 (if i remember right). I never tried over 210x21 on that MB, and can't say much abut x21 behavior.
These BCLKs may change with new BIOSes too, I guess. I suspect some tweak on the MB would affects these BCLKs too, but I don't know what on this MB, yet.
Err I mean not testing for 24/7 stability, just quick stability testing to see how much juice you need to run like 4.3GHz or something. I use this method to scale up and see where the max clock is and at the lowest voltage for quick stable. When I see a point where I need much more voltage just to get it stable for the short tests, then I know that I should go back to the other speed and try for 24/7 stability.
So when doing this quick testing, what's the best for these chips? In my previous life/AMD Phenom II days, 3 passes of Linx and 4 minutes of OCCT was good for this quick stability testing.
I see.
It usually BSOD in the first minute when it needs VVT or IMC related tweaks. It may run fine up to 20 minutes and BSOD if it is missing Vcore, usually, is my experience.
I use 30 min Prime small FFT or OCCT for quick tests.
I use hyperPi32M for quick RAM/IMC test, and it tests the Core too. I have "almost" always had 24/7 stable system if i could pass HYPerPi32M.
Ah, awesome! Thanks for the info, just what I was looking for. Never heard of HyperPi before, just got it. Thanks again :)
I gotta say I love the Level 2 Load Line Calibration. I have no vdroop, actually my idle voltage is lower than my load voltage, as some have reported earlier. Just sooo nice, makes the overclocking very easy. Sexy mobo indeed.
Yep, and everything else is relatively low for 215x21, too.
@4.51GHZ (215x21)
Vcore=1.34v
VVT=1.34v
IOH Core=1.14v
ICH Core=1.14v
QPI PLL=1.14v
CPU PPL=1.40v
RAM @ x8, 8-9-8-20 1.61v (ET6-read)
This has passed 10 Run LinX and have been behaving really smooth under stress in 24/7 use in past few days. So smooth that I wanted to try higher OC, but it is not going as smooth, yet .. .
Interesting. I just lowered my CPU PLL to 1.4v from 1.8v and it's lowered the voltage that the LLC Level 2 was raising the processor to. I have it bios set to 1.325 and now under load it goes 1.328... before it was going to ~1.34 IIRC.
Also, at 4.3ghz lowered the CPU PLL to 1.4v didn't cause any instability, so at this point I'd definitely recommend doing it.
Decided to try out the 5870's on this board. Had put them away because of the problems with locking up and stripes, but wanted to try some 3d benching with this board. I think 30k is doable, just need to add some voltage to the cards to get the clocks up higher.
I need to read up on how to use an Nvidia card for PhysX , that should boost my score a little also.

Nice 3dmark Vantage score OC Nub:up:
I think my temps are still holding back my oc, even with the additional pressure on the mount, but I should have a new Thermalright Venomous X tomorrow.

Hi guys! I finally got the UD7. And sold my UD5. LOL!
Weird, I noticed that the UD7 needs less vcore than on the UD5?

Damn, I left it running for 20/20 tests in LinX, when i came back black screen. :Sigh:
I noticed that I forgot to set LLC. It was at standard. Now testing it at Level1.
I never tried Level 1, but I use Level 2 and love it. It actually makes idle lower than load, negative vDroop if you will.

Black screen at first boot after flashing to F3k.
But ... because it was going to update the SATAIII firmware .. and rebooted by itself and everything was back to the normal.
It was a scary black screen, you are warned.
I got the black screen also, but it was very quick and fine upon reboot like you mentioned.
This platform is a pita for overclocking memory, I kind of miss the UD6 board.
It was quick here too, but ... the theory of relativity ... it felt long.
I'm still running @1768MHZ 8-9-8-20 1.64v (BIOS set), but it is giving "almost" the same performance (based on Everest bench-numbers), as ~1700MHZ 7-8-7-20 1.65v on DFI UT.
I'm still wondering about the DMM-read value of Vdimm=1.66v.
I haven't played much with RAM on this MB yet. It seams to need more tweaks than just 1.66v to stabilize at 7-8-7-20, but It's running at hinger BCLK/frequencies now, and it may play a role too.
I build a system with the UD7 and a 920 D0. I have not done any overclocking yet but CPU-Z is displaying my core speed as 1995 MHz (15 x 133). EIST, turbo, and C1e are already disabled. Is something wrong with my CPU? I have not touched the multiplier.
Thanks,
Rob
Well I received my new Thermalright VX and at first I was a bit disappointed, the idle temps compared to my pressure modded Mega Shadow were very close but the difference showed more under load. The VX is about 3-4 degree's c better than my Mega Shadow under load which helped me get 4.4 more stable, now I can work on 4.5:up:
Here is the 10 LinX run with Cpu-Z and Real Temp screenshot
http://www.straferight.com/photopost...10Mhz_LinX.jpg
Good job.
Those few degrees is all we chaise after, and gives the little extra (mentally and practically) that one really needs to hit 4.5GHZ.
New BIOS didn't change much, it seams. Any change log?
So I've got 4.3ghz HT On just about 24/7 stable now with 1.344vcore, which is a bit high, but my VTT is relatively low at 1.24v.
Anyone know if raising my VTT will allow me to get 4.3 stable with less vcore on the CPU?
I think it depends on your cpu, mine requires 1.325vcore and 1.355vtt to reach 4.4 with ht on where as sam's requires less. I would say try it, it can't hurt and may lower your temps enough for you to clock higher.

Hey Bex, good job. That's the same Vcore as my 219x21, SuperPi32M, but I was hoping to get it prime stable with that Vcore :p:, of course it didn't work , yet ... .
The MB plays a role too, but I believe the CPU batch# plays a much bigger role in how much vcore one needs.
Doing some more testing for 24/7 settings. Ran linx then a long blend run last night, now testing custom blend, set 4200mb mem to test for a couple hours. If it passes I will leave it like this.
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/2...0custommem.png
Man those temps are good. Are you still using the AC to cool your rad?
Btw, we have the exact same chip. Except mine is the Xeon W3520 version... 3945A906 right?
I've only done a bit of overclocking for now and have a lot more to go, but right now I'm sitting at 206x21 = 4326 mhz / HT on @ 1.344v load, 1.28v vtt I believe. I forget the exact other settings, but they are very close to stock. CPU PLL is undervolted at 1.4v IIRC. I wouldn't call this a 24/7 stable overclock yet as I haven't really stress tested it, but it's been working great for normal everyday usage.
Can you get any higher PCIe-Clock with the UD7 than with the extreme?
That is mine! Due to PCIe-Clock limitation I can't get higher clocks!

http://www.abload.de/thumb/1uayc.png
http://www.abload.de/thumb/pi2bsq26.png
Also primestable is 226x19 but no picture at the moment!
I need to know if it's worth it to buy the UD7?
Your results are already great, doubt they'd improve much, it's not as much motherboard related as you might think.
@EmertX
You will get higher bclk on the UD7 ws an unmodded Extreme due to higher PCIe.
Wow EmertX, very nice chip. What cooling are you using?
Also, do you know batch number?
You have seen the second picture, haven't you?!
Here again:

So I already got the 4,6GHz but I'd love to bench the 4,8 and stabilize the 4,7 or so!
The onliest way I can go is the hardmod you guys think?
Picked up another 260 to try sli on this board, having a lot of fun now playing with the rig.
http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/6974/newbest260sli.png
Yep I've seen that. Good job and bold attemp. You may have a better chance to get that Primestable on this MB.
I haven't seen your primestable 226x19 yet. Where is it, can I have a look at that beauty?
222x19 Primestable is the highest I could get with 19x. I've had a few short prime-run with higher BCLK, but those doesn't count as primestable in my book.
What fun would that be?:D
I have a pair of 5870's that score much higher but the random stripes, and freezes have pissed me off enough to send me back to green for a while. When something fixes this issue I will gladly go back.
These card are fun to play with and are plenty for anything I do, until I find a game I enjoy playing again.
That's were close to 3DMarks P26259 (PhysX:enable) on my GTX 295 @650/1200/1402 .
But I haven't played with 3D lately, just waiting to see more about GF100 Fermi before jumping on a new GPU.
Nice 3DMark Vantage scores ...... I wish I could enable physics on my card :( but the games I play most do not utilize it anyway
Here is mine @4.4 with a single ATI5870 P21041 I noticed that Vantage does not correctly identify the multiplier as 21 but shows my cpu @ 4.2 with the correct bus speed of 210.
My board, but not my result, cause I didn't take a picture of mine!

Oc Nub, as I mentioned earlier I have a ton of watercooling parts laying around and I was thinking of setting up this i7 rig for water. Your temps look pretty good but I see you have your rad pulling from a window ac unit, have you tried running it without the window unit? How are the temps? Here is a list of the parts I have laying around that I was going to throw together :
Swiftech MCP-655
Black Ice Pro II rad (240) or Swiftech MCR220
Old Swiftech Apogee extreme Duty Block (I will buy this adapter)
Large 2 Bay Res
10' clearflex 38 tubing
The only part I would need to buy would be the adapter bracket for the Apogee and a few fittings, I would be in my home office which stays around 68F. In your opinion will I see a noticeable improvement in temps or will my i7's heatload exceed a single 240 rad?
I think it would be worth trying, you could also add the second rad to the loop if need be. I haven't tried a 240 rad so I'm not sure what kind of temps to expect. I am not that experienced at water cooling, maybe someone else will have a better idea what to expect.
I will test after work to see temps with no ac but I believe they were around 10c higher.
Did a quick run when I got home from work. With the room at 77f my temps after 5 passes LinX hit 80c. Normally the room isn't this warm but the wife is has the heat blasting.
I will be going back to my UD6 board tonight. I know this is a faster platform but I miss that board, and the platform. There are no games out that I like anymore so I have no need for cf or sli, and for a single card I prefer my UD6-870 rig.
can some people perhaps confirm that the waterblock on the ud7 is copper and has 3/8" fittings please?
cause I'm finding some contradicting statements... (7,5mm vs 10mm outer diameter fittings)
In the gigabyte manual:
http://europe.giga-byte.com/FileList...x58a-ud7_e.pdf
This implies fittings with a outer diameter of 19/64" (or more likely 5/16", since I don't think 19/64" exists)Quote:
For the waterblocks on the North Bridge heatsink, we recommend tubes with inner diameter of 7.5mm and outer diameter of 10mm
In Supershanks review:
http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/revie...html#post79973
this clearly states 3/8" as outer diameter of the fittingsQuote:
The waterblock is copper on the UD7 unlike the aluminium ones used previously, which is a plus as most people use copper blocks, so you won't be running nixed metal blocks. There are no alternate barbs, the fittings are 3/8" (10mm) so if your using thicker tubing you'll need to use something like PrimoChill Reducing socket 13mm to 10mm (1/2' to 3/8').
please also mention in which country and when you bought the mobo (in case there are differences)
thanks!
Finally stopped wining :)
Playing with different C-states (disabling the C1E, and enabling "C3/C6/C7 State Support") helped lowering the intensity, but couldn't stop it totally with LLC= "Level 2". It was LLC= "Standard" that could finally shut her up, totally.
In my experience, with LLC= "Level 2" the lower Vcore results in more wining (more intensity in high-pitch sound). In my 2 different 24/7 setup, the @4.22GHZ(222x19) 1.2v has been wining much more than @4.51GHZ(215x21) 1.34v. Also, lower-Vcore = more-wining.
The combination of LLC= Standard + disabling the C1E + enabling C3/C6/C7 State Support, has stopped it totally independent of the Vcore. :)
@ OC Nub thx man, I went ahead and ordered the block adapter and fittings today, my room stays cool so I should be fine and like you said I can always add the second rad
@ Mastakilla, I was curious so I tested some clearflex 60 I had which is 3/8 ID and 5/8 OD and it went on without too much force but did grab so with a clamp I think 3/8 ID is good but 5/16 would be very snug and possibly a better seal.
4.83G pass linx 50 run on water

dude, I have a really nice w3520. i'll trade you for that wimpy i9...
LOL, that wimpy i9... is actually a Intel 32nm Xeon Westmere DP 3.20G , and it isn't exactly cheap.
Good job, this looks good. These 32nm Quad seams to handle much more Vcore with less heat. :)
I've been hoping that some batch# of these 32nm Quads can hit 5GHZ for 24/7 use on air/water, and this is a really promising start .
I purchased my UD-7 from newegg a US online retailer.
Some quick tests to see how it works with LLC= "Standard" and looks good.
It is a huge Vdroop(compared to Level 2), Vcore= 1.30625 (BIOS set) ends up as 1.24v/1.21v (Idle/Load). But I'm keeping it, not only because stopped wining, but seams to be running stable with 2 higher BCLK:)
PCIe = 103MHZ, not only boots with BCLK224, but also seams to be stable roo:)
w3520 @4.25GHZ (224x19) 1.21v  30 min OCCT stable :)

PUMP IT UP TO x21 BABY!!!
LOL, I would love to, but I don't dare to try it. My air cooling would have some major objections.
I couldn't get it it over 4.5GHZ(215x21) 1.34v yet (not without breaking my own cool&quiet requirements).
Woah so increasing the PCi-E clock helps the overclock? If so I think I might have 4.5 GHz in this chip.
I just ordered some reducing sockets (1/2' to 3/8') from DD, they should be here tomorrow, and I'll post how they do with the stock block. I am running a X-Flow Black Ice Pro III with a single bay res, and room temp around 65f. Should be plenty of rad for the nb and cpu. If not I have another Black Ice Pro single 180mm I could add into the mix.
215x21 is 10-run LinX-stable with PCIe=100MHZ :).
I haven't done much testing of PCIe-effect with x21 multi, but have done some with x19 multi and:
PCIe=100MHZ .. BCLK221 boots and 221x19 is 24/7 stable too, but BCLK222 won't boot here.
PCIe=104MHZ .. BCLK222 boots and 222x19 is priemstable too,
PCIe=104MHZ .. BCLK227 boots fine and 227x19 runs some light load too, but won't get primestable, and increasing the PCIe up to 115MHZ won't help either. (This may work on other systems. I suspect this limitation is related to my double GPU (GTX 295), because i get some display-artifacts while priming with BCLK>226). I haven't tried BCLK>227 yet.
All these test are done with LLC= "Level 2", just started testing with "standard" and now the 224x19 is showing good promises for primestability with PCIe=103MHZ. This is 2 BCLK higher than before, but I'm not so very sure if this is stable, or the LLC is the reason, yet.
Cheers, I'll give it a go and see what I end up with.
Oh yeah, I noticed with the F3K BIOS my memory won't overclock as high as it used to do with the F2 BIOS.
Some update on this ...
This is not stable .. Tried with Vcore up to 1.232v and VVT up to 1,34v, it runs some OCCT and Primes too, but Linx freezes after about 2 minutes at almost same spot every time.
Tried my good old profile @4.22(222x19) 1.2v and it is passing the spot just fine.I can conclude that: The LLC= "standard" is not resulting in higher BCLK on my setup.
Weird. About 6 minutes into Prime Blend my screen flashed to black then came back pretty quickly. Anyone know what this means?
edit: Still going strong for 20 minutes... gonna stop it now so I can game :)
206x21 = 4326... max temp is 84C. Running very stable for all my usage... this is longest Prime session I've done though. I'm still wondering about the screen flash, I don't have my PCI-E overclocked at all either.
---------
edit 2: whoa I am running Linx now. I have 12GB of RAM now and am running full problem size at 37162... first run took 10 minutes!!! Wtf, is something wrong? My Gflops is 55.4136, is this low for 4.3ghz? Hm, 2nd run was 55.6235 Gflops.
Also max temp during Linx is now 88C. Anyone think I'm doing serious damage to my chip?
lol, I just realized how many questions I'm asking here. Any answers are very much appreciated guys! <3

Thanks nyeah for the info, I take it TMPIN2 would be the NB.. After doing a little testing the Hybrid Silent pipe(with a 120mm blowing across the fins) takes off about 6-8c. I am going to see what the stock block can do under water this evening.

These are really good results with high BCLKs.
EDIT: ...
New BIOS:
GA-X58A-UD7 - F3m
-released 27.Jan 10
http://forums.tweaktown.com/f69/giga...st-bios-28441/
I am trying this new bios.
The 2:10 memory multiplier requires a lot of vtt, more than I am comfortable using. I have been messing around the different memory multpliers on this board and my UD6 P55, the 2:8 is faster in spi1m. The vcore is high but I turned it up to prevent it from crashing while saving this image. This is as high as I can bench at cas6 on the x58.

f3m - have not noticed any changes. I'm still having a problem with bclk above 215. I do not know what's going on
This is very strange. I have not problem with bclk 230:

For 24/7:

I'm getting almost the same, but mine is with unoptimized RAM and loose timing.

^ Doesn't look like there is any real benefit to try for low latency. Our scores are almost the same.
Damn your vcore is good, makes me want to get another chip. I keep looking at that 960 chip at newegg but cant make myself press the button.
I'm afraid you are right. It seams to give "almost" same Everest-bench-numbers with x8 RAM, no matter what latency, too.
Yeah, I love the low Vcore too, but this is far from stable, and my air-cooling can't handle the necessary Vcore to stabilize this for 24/7 use, either.
Waite for i7 930 before pressing any button, it will be here next month. It will probably be a new stepping with better OC headroom. Just some guess and speculations from my side for now, but we will find out soon.
This result makes no problem with BIOS F3k:

But with f3m situation is not good:shrug:
I noticed my 8-hoers prime stable @4.22(222x19) 1.2v couldn't Prime for even 1 minute with the new BIOS (f3m).
I haven't tried my other 24/7 profile @4.51(215x21) 1.34v, or that 220x21 with f3m, because I've already flashed back to F3k.
