What we know so far:
1- Same PCB (or at least very similar) as HD4870;
2- 2*6 pin connector;
3- 240Mhz (!!!) idle speed (I guess the rumours about the PowerPlay revision were true)
4- Same cooler
5- ATI OC Utility shows a max overclock of 1Ghz;
6- It's called 4890 and not 49xx.
Performance figures and design changes are only guesses right now.
And here's the first boxart:
http://img90.imageshack.us/img90/353...rcolor4890.jpg
I found it in Fudzilla. I don't know where they got it, though.
I'm doing it... 3 x voltmodded watercooled 4890's @ 1100mhz core clock here I come :D these things are gonna be BEASTs
I am utterly horrified to see the memory is still not affected by Powerplay!
It's just useless to slow down the GPU speed as memory is the idle powerhog on these cards.
I don't think you realise "RAMDAC" has absolutely nothing to do with the memory you see on a video card.
And, there's only 8 GDDR5 chips on those cards...
felt like i barely got my 512 4870s... lol now i want this
ugh yes sorry, It just seems more distinguished in that pic than the 4870... it is the same.
that said I have just compared and the mem/gpu area is the same. but the PWM area is vastly different.

For the ATI Guru's: Will the HD4890 X2 follow the single GPU sister launch on April too?
Looks like the first rumours were true...we'll see the 850 and 950 clock versions at $199 and $299.
I'm still waiting for the ace in the hole but have a feeling ATI may have us wait a tad longer to show that.

Here's something fresh from Asia, with love. Popular Chinese site Coolaler is once more first to show pics from an yet unreleased product - the next generation ATI Radeon HD4890 video card. The card below is equipped with single RV790 GPU clocked at 850 MHz and 1 GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 3900 MHz. It has full DirectX 10.1 support and is CrossFireX ready. Apart from that, all other distinctive features can be seen from the pictures. The Radeon HD4890 is set to be released after April 6th of this year.

Should I sell my GTX280 on April 5th?
4890x2 +4890 is my goal for tri fire ( i dont wanna pay extra money for a nf200 chip so i can get x16 x16 x16 lanes)
the looked priced very nicely
if send someone these coolalers drivers, i can test it and post results ...!
Hmmm...
Have I heard that before?
Déjà vu.
Didn't see this posted yet:
HD4890 listed in geizhals (euro pricewatch).
zerazax,
Errr...
You talking about that square'ish area of tiny SMD caps? They are so not related to the arrangement of the ALUs.
They are vDD/ground pads. The only thing it might mean, is the chip would consume less current as there's fewer power pads on the chip carrier.
Thanks largon, that makes a bit more sense but either way, they changed the GPU in one way or another
As for HKPolice, you could've posted like largon and reasoned it, but instead
I'm not here to start a flame war, but if you ever wondered a lot of people dont take your rumors seriously in these threads, true or not, compared to people like w0mbat and other members, well your attitude certainly is one of them
I'm just a noob so.. I'll let the pros do the talking. Here's some bigger pictures for comparisons. Found it posted on my local forum.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to put the photos up on the first post?

Big image of my 4870 that I took on my phone camera.
There already has been a Vantage score. Performance, GPU score 9801.
3DM06:
SM2.0: 6155
SM3.0: 7521
That looks like the same score as a vanilla HD4870..
I sure hope that's not a real score, or that it was taken with a weak setup.
i7 at 2.66. 3D06's SM 2.0 and 3.0 are much more sensitive to single threaded performance (especially clockspeed) IIRC.
4890 center resistors: 4x11
4870 center resistors: 6x12
that said the entire resistor arrangement outside the center of the GPU area is %100 different between the 4870 and 4890. I find it hard to believe all that change is for power consumption alone....
Is it possible they are hiding 40nm from us?
well purely area wise (resistors behind the gpu) there is a really significant size difference...
the 4890 is 44 units and the 4870 is 72units
.72(ratio 40:55nm) --> .61(ratio 4890:4870)
Considering the backside of a HD4850 looks nothing like HD4870's it is safe to declare those CAPACITORS and their oh so suspicious alignment, shady layout and undeably far-fetched relation to process size mean absolutely nothing.
Since when have they started to mark resistors with a "C", instead of a "R" on the silkscreen?
:stick:

Faster clock to clock than the RV770
We’ve heard that ATI's secret weapon with RV790 is not actually the higher clock speed, but rather improved shader efficiency, which enables it to do things a bit faster than a RV770.
This would mean that the RV790, Radeon HD 4890 card should end up faster compared at the same clock and specification to HD 4870 card.
We are not sure what ATI did to its shaders, but this is the reason why RV790 chips are actually differ from the RV770, and that the pin count is not the same. The release day should be April 6th.
The only way to avoid disappointment would be to close oneself in a hut in the Arctic until April 6th...everything else is speculation.

Is there something I'm missing here? if so then please explain to me dont mock me :shakes:
Google for "surface mount ceramic capacitor".
Among the nigh-random images you'll spot these.
/me graps popcorn and keeps enjoying the circus show.
nm :)
who cares about the difference between resistors and capacitors, lets just make more rumors about this awesome new, non-re-badged ATI card.
Has anyone seen this thread yet? Shows some preliminary results which are taken with a grain of salt.
I honestly don't believe they are. Here are my 4870 results using a E8400 @ 3.60Ghz
In all honesty, using a 920 should have yielded a higher result, 3D06 is CPU Bound.
3DMark06 is heavy CPU-limited in this case because it's not a 965 but a 920@stock
Stock i7 920 and...
- HD4870 @ 820/1000: 14400 (http://www.hwbot.org/result.do?resultId=818978)
- HD4890 @ 850/1000: 16000 (http://www.ocheaven.com/news_view.asp?gid=6754)
Considering 3DMark06 is actually a CPU benchmark the increase is CRAAAZY.
That gpu score of 9801 in vantage is pretty darn good. For reference, a stock 4870 1gb at hardware canucks scores a 8724 so thats 12.3% increase which seems about right.
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum...review-10.html
Mr.BSEL,
HD4890 also has a 13% higher core freq.
And HWC's benches are with a 3.85GHz Yorkfield.
Lol, certain someone still has tough luck with statements related to ATi.
It's incredibly hard to verify speeds based on 3dMark06 across the systems
That said, its GPU score in that puts it very close to a GTX 285, and slightly above the GTX 280
http://i44.tinypic.com/15s7xhh.jpg
HD 4870 1GB + Cat 9.3 (same system) = 10 360 3dmarks ... (7 percent lower score)
That should be about right, considering this:

OBR:its really 4890 or only simulation HD4870 OC?(i read some about 13% up in 3dmark )
try extreme preset.
Its early sample of HD4890 (one month old), with first PCB (9450 instead 9460), this card has 6+8 PSU pins, retail has 6+6 ... THIS IS REAL HD4890, ... but drivers arrivedy yestarday.
next step ...
http://i41.tinypic.com/20f6g05.jpg
18594 for the engineering sample then?
Out of curiosity with an i7 920 what does a 4870x2 and a GTX 285 score on average to compare?
i will test GTX 260 + 280 today against, on the same machine
Now OBR, good posts to reclaim "some" lost cred you've had in this forum, keep it coming sir. :)
I will wait for results from someone who knows how to use hardware.
1. Dont be envious LowERun, that i have everything HOT HW and you nothing ...
2. Its time for reality for ATi Dreamers ...

Welcome AMDus Rebrandus, ONE year of waiting for Oced HD4870! Great success (okay, tested with no official and oddity drivers - results are not final)!
Performance is really between GTX 260 (216) and GTX 280 - ideal for GTX 275!
PS. Not tested by me, but friend!
Tnx for the benches OBR !
I know now what my next card is.

And the masses see 3dmark first :shakes: 1280 x 1024 is definitely the measure of how good a GPU is !!!!!! NOT
that extreme preset result is VERY promising though....
With all the Radeon bashing OBR is doing I would take those results with a grain of salt. :ROTF:
1. 1280x1024 is simply to low
2. Rumors are surfacing of a GTX 275 to compete with the 4890
3. Vantage incorporates the use of physx in the cpu benchmarks which does effect the overall score
1- Your position as reviewer should be impartial.
2- You are a Nv fanboy.
3- Looks like tests where from friend and without drivers.
4- AMDus Rebrandus? You need some reality check. Cut the crap and go buy one 8800GTS 512Mb or 9800GTX or 9800GTX+ or GTS250 in it's four consecutive rebranding.
Let the price war begin, I sold my 9800GTX+ and will need a new card mid april ! we got plenty of power coming it seems in the 250 buck market !
Darn, after i thought he has somehow got some sanity, OBR proved me wrong yet again with another trolling, attention seeking post of his, what a shame.
