well im not sure i can do that since its not doing it at stock :D
if it happens once at stock i will go replace it
well im not sure i can do that since its not doing it at stock :D

ok i did some testing...core1 goes to 3ghz, core2 goes to 2.8ghz, core3 goes to 2.7ghz, and core4 goes to 2.6ghz...thats at stock 1.30-1.32...so...its either some crap on the mobo, or the stepping is bad...hopefully someone can come with a suggestion...whats the other voltages on the mobo...like HT and stuff...should i leave them at default?
Use my Template on the First Page and just Make sure CPU Voltage is @1.30 and CPU-NBVlotage is @1.30:)
i dont have the same ram as you...wont the settings for dram be different then?
Well I would assume that you would put you're own RAM settings in lieu of mine.\
You know that could be the problem right there in a nut shell as 4x1gb is very hard on the Board and compounds the OC quite a bit. Try removing 2 sticks amd leave dimm 1-3 installed and then try overclocking and see if it goes easier as I am sure it will;)
I'm starting to think my problem was the GSkills not being a good match for AMD. They are great ram but for 2 790FX boards and 2 Phenoms that the machines they were in had problems with OC. One set is in a Sintel doing great but that's for another threas.
I now have the Corsairs in any ran it at 2.55G and 1.285V Today I dropped it to 1.2375V. Still XP64 and looking promissing with a one hour test of Orthos which used to kill it in 10-15 mins.
I'm just taking my time and enjoying what I have so far which is the best rig I've had so far. Later this week I'll walk this thing up to see where to sweet spot is. Still 2.8G is my goal but, I'll take 2.65G-2.75G
same results with 1, 2, 3, 4 sticks in :S
wasup bros ! give me a little advise :P what is the best memory to put in this mobo ? 800mhz or 1066 and what brand ?
You won't do much better than what you already have.
d4d4ch, I'm limited to the 2nd and 4th slot. I'm sure the corsiars are stable, the DDR2-1000 is a problem.
In "DualCore"'s case, I don't know if the 1000 Reapers are going to work any better. The problem is, you can't get the TRC high enough ( above 26) to run at 1000 speeds. All BIOS versions I've seen are borked and locked at 26.
Get the Reapers I have and use Tony's SPD File:)
I got mine from ZipZoomFly.com:)
$99 shipped from CV. Edit: Borked search engine included the 800s, glad I didn't pull that trigger.
I'm going to drop a Veloceraptor 300G 10KRMD drive in also.
Something is definitely better, I was able to post at 2.82G and 1.25V but it hung up a after the XP splash. 1.325V got me almost to the login.
I rolled back to 2.57G for now at 1.25V. I'm using the clock set to 207x12.5 to OC as I'm not been able to get the multi above 12.5 at boot, keeps booting at 12.5 no matter what I set. Once I get the reefers, I'll use your settings as it may just be the ram controller getting in the way.
I'm finally starting seeing what this thing can do now and not seeing the problems I had at first. Sure overclocking may fail but I can now judge where the edges are.
I'm having quite of a problem :
A64 6400+
790FX-M2R latest official Bios
2x1GB PC8500 Balistix Tracer
eVGA 8800GTX ACS3
750W Silencer
Windows XP Pro SP2
I installed everything (drivers etc) and I had a kind of "lag" in the sound, video and games every x seconds. I decided to format and to test after each bios installation, it seems that it comes with the installation of the video driver (latest nvidia - for sound also the latest driver).
Has someone ever had the same problem ? Could be video memory that's too hot ? (I don't think so as it works fine without installing drivers)... ?!
Finally had time to OC...
2.9Ghz passed first 20 min stability test (Everest), but failed second 1h test (idle ;) ) on firefox start
Now happy at 2.8Ghz.
This is my stepping: JAAFB AA 0810 GPBW
Reduced voltage from 1.3 to 1.275 (in bios) and seems to work the same.
However, Everest shows the voltage is 1.25, although for 1.3 it was showing 1.3
Anyone observed similar voltage problems?
Is my voltage 1.275 or 1.25 ?
Is reporting wrong or voltage dropped more than specified in bios?
I've seen issues with this. If I lower Vcore to 1.235 then later raise it to 1.25 it will stay at 1.235. What I found I had to do after I've made one are two adjustments and return to do more, is I have to write down what I have set the hit F7 (Opt Defaults) in the PWM screen then set my values that I want and save, then it works. Good clocks at 1.275. I've been unsuccessful at getting to 2.8 stable even at 1.325.
So what is the actual voltage - 1.275 or 1.25?
Bios still shows 1.275 but Everest reports 1.25
I tried 2.9 at 1.3 but it failed idle -> browser test, although load test was ok...
First of all, sorry for my poor english...I Should try to explain my problem:
I Have this Components:
UT 790FX- M2R
Phenom 9850BE
4gb DDR2 GSKILL 4-4-4-12
XFX 8800 GTS 320MB
Last Bios of the motherboard (05/05/08)- I Tried first the default BIOS-
My problem is that I can´t put 9850 over 2700 mhz...I´ll tried a few things that I readed in that forum but the problem persist... when I change the multiplier 13,5 to 14 (200x14)the system "froze" in windows...
I tried to up the vcore, disconnect TLB FIX, Relax the timmings, down HTT etc.....
Some help please...
Thak you very much... again sorry for my english...
Welcome to the forum:D
That problem isn't uncommon, I've the same problems. And I tried a lot of things, only thing left for me is waiting for the new RS780D/SB750 boards (also known as 790GX/SB750). That 'should' fix these issues, but it might be a very poor batch as well, which I dont hope of course.
Could you please tell us what Windows you actually have?
Have you tried loading Opt defaults in the PWM screen then manually resetting your voltage!
This has been one of my major headaches until I discovered what it was doing. The DQ5 is worse at this as I had to clear CMOS to get it to play nice.
Had another go with the Quad now & i did use your settings before but no go
until now & needed 1.55 to be stable under the S&M CPU only Loop All CPU Usage Maximum test + the new PSU.
Is there any advantage in using the cpu feature to over clock than using than Multi`s
I have been seeing people getting 2.8 3.0 3.4 from my supplier recently so i should have another Quad tomorrow & hope i get more luck than the one i have now.
Can someone tell me what AutoExpress is & where the settings are ?.
I did notice that the hex way was better but why ? & the people who are getting 3.4-3.5 using the multi may see even more using the HEX.
oh & im upto v1.58 now as i had a few BSOD if been sitting idle then put under pressure.
It has only got to survive until the morning :D
Every bodies experience is different I have had not issue one God Bless, with this board or Phenom;)
Thanks...I´m working on it...
anyway in our opinion what of those phenom´s the best looking the stepping:
HD985ZXAJ4BGH JAAFB AA 0812BPDW 9521504C80141
or
HD985ZXAJ4BGH JAAFB AA 0812BPMW 9521504C80133
That is not the stepping.
The stepping as displayed by CPUZ, of mine is 3, the revision is, DR-B3.
What you are referring to I think is the batch number as printed on the CPU, calling it stepping is just plain wrong and confusing.
New JAAFB AA 0812BPDW @2.8 stock Vcore
see if its stable.
Finally I tried the 2 phenoms...the second is the best...HD985ZXAJ4BGH JAAFB AA 0812BPMW 9521504C80133
I still have problems to pass 2800mhz with anyones but thanks to PWMIC sensor I think the problem is the power supply..it haves problems with the ATX 12V voltage and turns inestable when hits high temperatures...(75º I think is too much...)
About the processors the best runs at 2,8 ghz at stock voltage when the PWMIC sensor don´t show a very high temperature (I´ll try a corsair 620W one of these days...xilence sucks)
Today I configured the phenom 201 x 13,5 at 1,23 and runs perfect at 2710 mhz and I think I can dicrease the voltage more... (1,20 sounds good)
unfortunately dfi 790fx-m2r + 9850 phenom proved to be unstable crap for me...even on stock...never been more disappointed...replaced it with intel for now...gonna give it another go when amd actually releases chipset that will be 100% compatible with their cpus
Finally the problem is the power supply...
Now runs perfect with less voltage (1,23 at >2,8 ghz)
I think this CPU is good to OC...
Go For it! 3700Ghz is is the bar atm :D
I could not resist, the Quad is back in.
I hope the new chipset really is the answer as i have never seen such funny behaver from a cpu.
Did 14 hours 4core prime stable at 2.9 stock volts shut prime down fired up FireFox & then 5 mins later BSOD secondary CPU intur.
rebooted BSOD, rebooted then made it into windows 5 mins BSOD.
Dropped to 2.8 8 hours later while useing FireFox BSOD secondary CPU intur.
So when is the 790GX slated to come out??????
I've got the DK and 9850. This is my very first rig to overclock.
In my overclocking I'm to the point where I just need to invest in water cooling. I'm able to get to 3.0 and pass a few minutes of prime95 blend but I hit 58C and get scared.
I think this is definitely overclockable even for a newb, I've just found that it has low ceilings with the FSB. With DDR2 about 236 and DDR2 1066 around 210 in my experience.
I don't know if some of you got lemons or what, but I love this gear.
I run the DK, 9850 and 2x2G OCZ Reaper HPC @ 1066.
Currently I'm at 14.5x200=2.9G passes prime blend for 15 min, will run longer tests soon.
You need to stay lower with HT then that in most cases less stress on the CPU and board:)
Nice got 3Ghz out of the chip & it only took CPU/NB 1.65V to do it
idle temps 35oC
ooops! 1.7 now.
"NEW" D.F.I LanParty UT 790FX-M2R ~ 6/12/2008 Beta Bios>>>>>>http://www.dfi.com.tw/Support/Downlo...FLAG=B&SITE=US
Thx bro, have you tried it? The changelog only mentions "Major Reasons of Change: Fixed use AMD Sempron 3000+ CPU can’t into CMOS Setup". BTW Amd accepted both of my Phenoms for RMA. I just received a new 9850BE. Unfortunately they did not inspect the cips so I have no verification now if they died from overclocking or by that vdimm sensors issue.:shrung:
Just saw it on the site 2day a couple of hours ago when I posted it. So in short no:) My time is extremely limited right now and I don't know if I'm gonna be the one to do this ATM;)
DARN IT.... how many BIOS has DFI released since I ended up with this unstable POS Gigabyte board?
I'm jealous. You dang DFI people...
If Gigabyte would only release a stable bios. I can't accept that this Gigabyte board can't be made as stable as any other sb600 board. I suspect they could easily fix the DS5 problems... but won't do it because it would break backward compatibility with some other things. (Or perhaps not "fix" the problems... the sb600 is still a major issue... but they could provide better stability.)
(But if my Phenom would work BETTER... I don't care if a Sempron can't run on it....)
got my new mushkin pc8500 4 gigz of memory :D
i am concerned about the 2.1 V vdimm though...
Can it be that this board does not support wakeuponlan?
EDIT: Now what crap is this it can not even boot from lan.
I'm on the latest stable DFI bios atm, is there a version with a network boot option?
Why 2.1V aint that much. I run my cb tracers at 2.26V bios (2.3V dmm) 24/7.Ok I had two dead phenoms on this board but tht had other causes. 9600BE (still alive) survived and i never played much with the nb on that chip in opposite to my 9500 and 9850be.
I see Rebels Haven has posted a mod of the 417 & 612 bios that has 2 more voltages, 2 more VID's/FID's, and the TLB-Fix Disable/Enable setting added to it.
@oese: Looking at your sig i see you use watercooling. I'm in the process of watercooling my system here too. Can you recommend coolers for the chipset?
I use
D-Tek FuZion v2, Swiftech MCR320 360mm Radiator, Laing DDC
Keeps my 9850be at ~50° at 1.45V under load, that is ~15°C better than the xigmatec.
BTW: AMD sent be two 9500 and one 9850be back. I sent em one 9500 and one 9850be. Playing fair i contacted their support.
Now i wonder which one i should keep
CAAWB AA
0749 CPMW or 0749 EPAW
wots the difference between the UT and DK versions. will the deneb cores be supported on DK ?
I used a zern chipset cooler for the cfx nb, does a good job and costs you 9€ NEW directly from zern. should fit to the 790FX nb as well. sb i think can be cooled passively, or another zern nb cooler could do.
most important is the pwms anyway i think. at forumdeluxx, we thought that maybe the pwm-cooler for the dfi lp ut p35 would fit, seems like but noone tryed... the p35 has the same heatpipe/transpiper and alu-heatsink assembly as the m2r..
i'm cooling the chipset by the stock heatpipe and transpiper. for x2 that is just fine...
and i think one should not bother too much about high temps on the pwms.. they're digital and designed to stand temps up to 120°C. so something around 75°C should be ok.. but nevertheless, watercooled pwms are a fine deal :D
look at this:
http://www.forumdeluxx.de/forum/show...&postcount=945
I'm running stock on the stock sink modified. I would try the new BIOS but I need better cooling before I do as I need to up the volts to get my stick in the mud Phenom to go over stock. Stable as stone at 2.5G 1.26V stock.
If I set the ht link freq to 2.2, or 2.4, or 2.6, cpu-z always shows 2.0. Anyone else see this?
Thank you oese, very helpfull.
I wonder if that kit would also fit (way too expensive).
http://www.aquatuning.de/product_inf...eezer-Set.html
I wonder if i can mount two of these like the transpipers but they are alu.
http://www.aquatuning.de/product_inf...lel-G1-8-.html
However the pwm cooling will add alot of preausre to the cooling system, not sure if it's worth it, as you said it's digital and can handle high temps.
my first attempt...seriously now that was easy to achieve
also someone explain me how on earth can the 790fx reach temps high as 72C under load when it only needs 10w????
my highest suicide run:
http://www.lejabeach.com/pics5/790M2RS070308-1.JPG
A short update. Got a new 9850BE from AMD last week. The chip was made in week 11/08, so not the latest one.
I tried to oc under linux (debian lenny 64bit) and i was hitting a wall at ~2.75GHz with cpu temps ~75°C on air cooling.
On thuesday my watercooling parts arrived so I started playing with higher voltages. With 1.5V core and cpu temps are at ~58°C max. :) With the xig i always had temps above 75°C with voltages above ~1.425V, so for the moment i'm happy with that. I tried to get a good hwbot wprime result for a few hours for the rest of the evening.
Yesterday was really weird. I had all types of issues starting with random cmos clears, no post no boot, freezing issues. It turned out that 1066 mode was no longer stable (tried lower nb speed different timings voltages, driver modes). Even at 800 mode i had above issues, so i switched to 2GB GSkill 6400-4-4-3-5 modules. System is rock solid again.
Under winxp 32bit the chip runs stable at 2.8GHz ~1.3V however. Today I tried ocing under winxp 32bit.
NB 1.3V
MEM 400 5-5-5-15 1.85V
2.5GHz CPU 1.225V
2.6GHz CPU 1.25V
2.7GHz CPU 1.275V
2.8GHz CPU 1.3V
So fas so good. Now for 2.9GHz i tried 1.3V-1.45V in 0.025V steps. The system allways froze after a few minutes running prime95, had no idle freezes.
Now at 1.475V the chip runs prime95 for about an hour and also passed some idle freeze testings. Temps under load are 55°C max (the cpu temp is ~1°C higher than the core temp here).
BTW: My GBT Odin 550W PSU died last week. The maximum that psu had to handle was ~300W. While I wait for the RMA i use an Zalman 850W PSU.
@ea6gka: Had an 9500 for a while, taht chip did 2.55GHz max at 1.25V, so 2.6GHz at 1.21V look pretty good to me.
@JWilson: Cracy suicide, could you boot with those settings or did you change the multis under windows? Also can you run 14x230 = 3320MHz stable and without idle freezings at 1.4V? And a last question what temps do you get with 1.4V and 1.5V under load?
I boot from the bios using those settings and never use Windows OC software. 14x230 is 3220(not 3320 as your reply says) and never freezes, but it fails prime in a hour or so. Suicide shot is 14x240. That is 3320 and sometimes freezes once-in-a-while. I'm all watercooled with several fans blowing on everything. Never checked temps, but shutdown is 60C and never activates.
Waiting for the next Phenom revision :D
Thanks, you have a good clockerit seems. 20MHz-40MHz difference would mean 1.5MHz-3MHz lower ref HT. Never saw an bigger difference than 5MHz for the cpu clock here.
Have mine set to 75°C. I reach 60°C with 1.55V here. If I measure the voltage with a DMM it's 1.59V. :)
http://www.abload.de/img/155v5y9.jpg
This is my imit at the moment. 14.5x202MHz works at 1.5V for 203MHz i need 1.55V.
http://www.abload.de/img/coredamage28t.jpg
I ordered an 9950BE hope that think will take me over 3GHz.
mmh i dont think the first kit will fit. looks like the pwm section of the 680SLI board is designed differently..
of course one can mount some small coolers that fit somewhere on that cooling system.. there was a suggestion in that thread also..
http://www.forumdeluxx.de/forum/show...&postcount=578
i think such will lower the temps a little without giving too much heat into the cooling system.. and one can use the heatpipe to cool sb, nb and pwms..
here car_bon shows how he made it, was a watercool cooler..
http://www.forumdeluxx.de/forum/show...postcount=1384
Well after 2 faithful years my air cooled 3.6ghz OCed 4400x2 toledo core has been set aside. After 3 motherboard blow ups (two cfx3200 DFI LP dr/g and an ASUS A8N ultra deluxe) the last of which fried my 2900xt and the blessed 4400x2 delivered to me mistakenly by newegg appears to have been roasted as well. I can't be sure it's dead quite yet, but the last board still ran a 144 opty, though would not post with the 4400...though it may be fried (i really really hope not though) the screenies and benchmarks of the overclocking bliss it provided live on.
On the brighter side, i've gotten new toys to play with. DFI 790FX LP UT M2R 2x2gigs of DDR2 1066 gskill ram, a phenom 9850 BE quad and i am still waiting on the 4870 to arrive. Newegg was good enough to get the ram to me in only 14 hours after putting the order in....but the video card of course not. stoopid 4th of july had to ruin my purchasing joy.
So hopefully it will get here monday. For the time being i'm still reading up on how to actually overclock everything, while the overdrive app is nice, it just takes the fun out of it. I have high hopes though as it hit 3.1ghz prime stable at stock volts with the suprisingly effective box cooler that came with the phenom. Though the NB was getting a little toasty hovering around 60c idle, as i haven't put the spiffy lil' transpiper extension on and the test case doesn't possess my usual barrage of 6 120mm 110cfm silverstone fans.
But i just realized i need to update the bios to 5/05 as i'm still running 3/07, after which ill crank the clock up and see the difference in my cinebench scores at stock clock which are...
32bit 7641 in xcpu rendering
64bit 9196 in xcpu rendering
always agravates me no one posts 64bit benchmarks for comparison, so don't want to be a hypocrit. quite a leap from the 4400x2 benchs at stock speed of 2.2 which were around 3000 in 32bit and 3540 or soemthing in 64bit.
Just wanted to post about my happy news as it's been a long while since i upgraded. Oh, and to say how happy nvidia's 30.7% single day stock drop made me. =D
3.6ghz 4400x2 ?? i dont believe, its 2.6ghz i suppose??
guys , do you know if the 9950 is supported by the mobo?
im thinking it should be supported.. the only concern is 9950 is a 140 TDP processor.. but the MSI K9A2 Platinum seems to support it so this mobo shldnt have an issue. though i think u shld mail dfi support and ask them.. i saw their bios releases.. nothing mentioning support for the 9950 though
I cannot see it being a issue seeing how it is a B3 Revision chip:)
Thanks, also too expensive for what i plan.
That mosfet cooler fits perfect did car_bon report how well it worked? I spended a whole evening reading this interesting thread, thanks for posting.
BTW: AMD Support does not want the second 9500 back.
My AMD 9950BE JAAHB AA 0280BPMW
15X Multi stock volts :yepp:
see if it locks up later.
going to play some games.
i'm sorry, it seems car-bon disappeared from that thread.. But I think it should work a lot better then the original transpiper, as the contact surface is higher and the temperature is lower then that of the transpiper, i suppose even if you take into account the heatpipe that maximizes heat transport...
Well BF2142 crashed.
Upped the volts to 1.4 still crashed.
Not getting the CPU Clock int was not exc.. every time tho like before.
got into windows @3Ghz 1.26v.
I think it really is a SB600 problem & my one seems to be more crap than others.
That's no good news. :(
My 9850BE runs fine at 2.9GHz 1.475V-1.6V but no way to get 3GHz stable. Hope my 9950be arrives soon (expected today) so I can compare.
The clockgenerator chip used is the 9LPRS477. That chips is also used on the M3A and the GBT780G. The clockfrequency is generated via an multiplier and two diverent divisors. I wrote a linux kernel module for that chip so I can modify all three now. Using different divisors made no difference in terms of stability.
Anyway, thanks for posting your results. Your on 64bit vista ?
EDIT: 1.6V + 100.26% seems to be somewhat stable at 3GHz, at least the system did not immediately power off after starting CoreDamage. However the cpu and core temps are above 60°C now, so i'll not further investigate here.
yes vista 64..
Dont know yet as im still trying to get 3.0 stable by messing with other things :)
He He, good luck. Must say I expected 3GHz with a 64bit os as the worst case oc. DDR800 at ~1.8B seems alot more stable than 1066 at 2.2V here. Beside that i tried 1.4GHz HT speed, 195ns RFC's higher/lower chipset voltages, normal/weak driver mode, different PCIe speeds and gap's but nothing helped.
No need as we all know that a 64bit OS is more of a strain than a 32bit OS.
This 939 was not stable at the same volts when i put a 64bit OS on it.
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...postcount=3466
ok chaps got my 9950 , bug no1 the multi isnt working...set it 14 and it just doesnt work
edited , just seen Final8ty has the same setup and his multis are working , which bios mate? i have the latest non beta
damn those betas :D
or do i also have to change the cpu FID to make it work?
HD995ZFAJ4BGH JAAHB AA 0820APMW
just arrived.
For comparison 9850 power consumption and temps at stock:
Idle: 153,7W CPU 21°C CORES 33°C
Load: 243 W (everest julia)
Load: CPU 42°C CORES 45°C (coredamage 5mins)
9950BE at 2.5GHz 1.3V
Idle: 169W CPU 27°C CORES 26°C
Load: 267W (everest julia)
Load: CPU 52°C CORES 45°C
So the 9950BE requires ~15W more than the 9850BE here, temp reading seems more correct on the 9950BE.
HD 995ZFAJ4BGH JAAHB 0820GPMW here
WinXP SP2 32Bit Test
3GHz 1.35V prime95 stable (5 mins)
3.1GHz 1.35V prime95 failed after a few seconds
3.1GHz 1.375V prime95 failed after a few seconds on third core
3.1GHz 1.35V prime95 failed after a few seconds on third and fourt core
3.1GHz 1.4V prime95 failed after one minute on third core
3.1GHz 1.425V prime95 stable (10 mins) cpu temp has spices into 60°C area.
So far so good, next step is linux 64bit.
your bios settings are the same as the ones you post in the firsty pages justapost?
Hmm no, the Crucial Ballisitcs degenerated so i use G-Skill 6400 4-4-3-5 Mem now.
To be save i use 1.4GHz NT speed and run the memory at 5-5-5-15-195ns/1.85V.
I'm happy with my first linux testings. Machine seems stable at 3GHz 1.425V. I use the stresscpu2, build-linux-kernel and multicore tests from the phoronis test suite for stability testing. The first one does heat up the cpu alot so it's comparable to coredamage under windows. The other two tests are the ones which normaly fail first if the system is unstable.
UPDATE:
Linux 64bit (Debian lenny):
3.0GHz stable at 1.35V (kernel build caused kernel fault at 1.325V)
3.1GHz stable at 1.425V
That chip has the same limits here as under winxp 32bit.
Best suicide at 1.575V. The first core is not stable at voltages above 1.5V.
3.2GHz is not prime95 stable at 1.575V and fails booting windows at 1.6V.
http://www.abload.de/img/3333744.jpg
My cpu temps reach 70°C at those voltages so maybe getting em below 60° might help here.
No, it's from the mod bios in my siggy.
