The TR Ultima 90 is looking like a good option now that I see it can fit with the stock NB heatsink. How close are the two heatsinks? A shorter cpu heatsink probably puts less leverage pressure on the board or backplate or whatever its anchored to.
Is there a significant difference in cooling between Ultima 90 versus HR-01-X? HR-05-IFX versus stock NB heatsink?

What's surprising is that, according to the numbers, Ultima-90 is longer (i.e. stretches more towards NB) than HR-01-X and yet Ultima-90 fits (in minhgi's setup) and HR-01-X doesn't. Maybe the bottom fin of Ultima-90 is higher than that of HR-01-X?

OK I'm trying to decide between TR HR-01-X and TR Ultima-90.
Their cost is roughly equal so I'm mostly concerned with their features. From what I've read, the HR-01-X seems better at cooling (~3D Cel at load), which makes sense since it's bigger. On the other hand, the Ultima-90 is lighter and shorter, which means it puts less stress on the mobo and tray, especially when the mobo is positioned vertically in a tower or moved around. I plan on buying a case with the proper standoffs, but it still seems that the size of HR-01-X may be a factor.
Jcool, how wide are the fins on the Alpenföhn Ötzi? The specs say the base is 37mm wide but they don't mention the fins, which are usually less wide.

How wide are the fins.. well, good question. The Ötzi certainly is fat (thicker than the HR-05 but not quite as wide), but it's not as thick as the bottomplate. 3cm I'd guess, have to go measure tomorrow if you wanna know exactly.

You will have to modify heatsink that will be closet to CPU 1 or near to the heatsink, just like Jcool setup. Unless you use the HR-05. The width of the HR-01 and 90 is about the same.

Yes, they should fit. But don't fall for the SilenX, they are all about the marketing talk but in reality, they are just plain sucky fans, every single one of them.
Oh and active NB cooling isn't a must should you think that... I'm running my Ötzi passive, no problems at FSB 430 and 30C ambient. Just got to have some case fans...
Is it a good idea to install a aftermarket HS for the NB? I have the Thermalright HR-05. The base of it is half size smaller than the northbridge. How effective would the cooling be like?
All my parts should be coming in today and hopefully I do not have any more hurdles to jump.

There is no real difference between the HR-05 and the HR-05 IFX, except that the IFX is made for 80mm instead of 70mm fans (it's a little bigger).

I'm just curious what everyones temps are. CoreTemp and Everest are giving me different temps.
For CPU0 I'm getting 39c in Everest Enterprise but 50c in CT. For CPU2 I'm getting 32c in Everest and 40c in CT. The CPU core temps however seem to be similar with 50, 50, 51, 50, and 36, 41,41,39. During a 30 min Prime95 smallFFT test all core's jumped to around 90c+, some over 100c however the heatsinks were still cool to the touch. I've had ZERO issues with stability so far, letting it run crysis in both benchmarks for an hr or so, prime95 for 30, and it hasn't hiccuped in over a week. The only other things I've done to stress it are install VS 05, Office 07 (Blue), and any other app I could find. My medium temps seem to be around 65-75 with over 60%-80use of all cores. Using prime95 scared me a bit though watching them jump over 90c with all cores @ 100%.
I have a P4 3.4 running at 80c pretty much 24/7 for over a year though. Just very curious about all your temps.
90-100C prime? wow that is hot.. You can generally substract 10C from Everest's core readings as it uses the wrong Tjunction for the 45nm CPUs, just like coretemp.
So if it shows 100C you are at around 90 which is already dangerously close to the junction (95C).
I get a max of 78C Everest reading, but only after weeks of continuous crunching and 30C ambient. I wouldn't like it if it went over 70C real...

The fans dropping in speed fast doesnt mean the heatsinks are making proper contact.
It is an indicator that the IHS is not touching the cpu cores or the heatsink properly.
This is because heatsinks do not cool down immediately when the system becomes idle. They take a few minutes to reach near ambient temperatures.
dump the stock thermal pads, try some IC7 if available or AS5 if not and after seating pull the HS off and see that it is spread out properly.Quote:

The fans don't drop in speed really fast, the temps drop really fast. Once the temps are below the full speed setting in my Z7S bios they turn off from full speed, maybe a few minutes like you said. This I'm sure you know is controlled by my bios settings. I could set it to 70c if I wanted. Default is 55c.Quote:

EDIT: I want to add something. There is stock cooling with a fan and heatsink, and stock cooling with only a heatsink. I am not using passive cooling but active cooling and these things don't mind the heat I throw at em with a fan. I happen to ALSO have 2 servers using the passive HS only cooling (dual XEON 5410's) IN 2U's and they are doing very well, and have been since March. Thanks for everyones time and comments.

I appreciate your input. It could be a lot of things. The fact remains however that the cpus are CONSTANT temps at idle after a week and only jump under load. That means I have good contact, but correct me if I am wrong. I'm using stock Intel thermal pads after all - but they haven't failed me ever before. Like I said these CPU's don't even need a fan and thats fact because I have 4 in 2U's running fine for months without fans over the heatsinks. Do you run stock clocks on those 5410's? The lower the clock, the higher the stable temp threshold.. mine crash at 3,2Ghz when they hit 80C real/90C Everest.. I tried without fan just to see, lol ;)
Oh and in my rig, everything gets rather hot.. NB, Rams, even the Heatpipes from the HR-01's. But temps are ok even at 30C ambient, plus this system is a rock at FSB 430 :up:
I would say cold heatsinks are a bad thing. I'm sorry but I just cringe whenever I hear "I get X(high temp imo) and the heatsink isn't even warm!" If I see high temps anywhere, I expect the heatsink to burn. Of course, it could always just be the temp probes on your CPU are fubared.

As you can see the passive heatsink is rather larger. Al models from the 5405 to the 5450 come with the option of active or passive, so I think it's a rather well proven point that you don't need to go active cooling. Either way like I said before I'm not trying to cook these by overclocking too much which would in my opinion require better cooling. However, since the heatsink and fan for each model from 5405 - 5450 is identical from Intel, I think I'm set up to 3Ghz.
Part of the reason my heatsink for the cpus aren't warm to the touch is because of the fan directly above them, and the room they are in. Also I'm not feeling them from the top but rather the thick base/bottom (one piece unlike your HR's), and the side fins. There is a 10d temp swing from my upstairs and downstairs, and currently the rig is on a table, in the case with both sides open, a top exhaust fan, front input fan, dual rear exhaust fans so it's getting a lot of airflow downstairs where the cold air shoots out from the ceiling.
Once I get my huge Sigma SD-10 batts recharged I'll take some professional pics for ya all. ;)
With my Q6600 G0 at 3 GHZ when running WCG on the stock cooler, the heatsink is hot to the touch. The CPU more or less stays below 70C, so I'm fine with it.Quote:

I can almost guarantuee you that you won't have much luck OCing at these temps. Oh and your tjunction is 95C, not 105C. Like I said before, coretemp assumes the wrong tjunction which is why it misreads temps in the first place. Which means core 0 is one degree below the junction.. which would scare the hell out of me. 65nm Xeons have a 105C tjunction, but not the 45nm ones.
I urge you to at least replace that crappy thermal pad with AS5 if you want to overclock and your CPUs to live a few years. Unless both probes are :banana::banana::banana::banana:ed up, this is NOT healthy and it will be even more critical when you OC.

Yeah I know my temps are high, maybe the highest (yay...not), but I really do appreciate everyones comments on temps.
What I want to set straight is this:
1. These CPU's run without fan's attached or huge heatsinks - stock.
2. My heatsinks are attached fine, and if they were not it would not post/boot.
3. My temps are too high @ 100% load across 8 cores according to you all, but it is stable.

O'rly? 1u Dell 1950s may have "passive" HS to your eyes but 80-90% of the air volume going into the server are going over those HS rest is over the FB-DIMMs and I'll be happy to post pics as I have 2 data center's with well over 400+ 1950's with 5160's or x5460's, and just to make sure I'll grab some pics of a 2u quad socket quad core with "passive" sinks and 400-600CFM of fans did you ever wonder why most 1u/2u servers sound like jets. :lol2:Quote:

Ahhh "passive" cpu HS? these are 1u HS tucked under the RAM tray and if you look close in this one you will see a clear plastic air diverter forcing all the air at them. Every HS in that box doesn't have a fan ON it but needs the silly amount of air moving over/around them.
If I took these HS home and used them on my rig and didn't provide the airflow they where designed for they would run much hotter under load but return the CPUs to an OK temp outside of load. Just cuz they work well in the x4450 doesn't mean they will in my box :up:

I dont think the thermal interface material is the issue at these temperatures unless your heatsinks are not producing enough mounting pressure. Even so the hot IHS should cause the TIM to melt and allow the heatsink to settle if it has poor pressure.
Be sure to pay special attention to the contact patch between the IHS and heatsink in case they are horribly convex/concave.

The main thing is that Justin's rig works, and if these CPUs run FSB 400 at 110C coretemp stable, then that's fine with me (they won't though ;) )

HDD subsystem consists of my Adaptec 5405 raidcon (1,2Ghz Dualcore IOP/256MB DDR2-ECC) and 4 WD6400AAKS (dual 334GB-platter 7200RPM SATA drives). System now has watercooling for the HDDs (brand new Watercool Silentstar Quad Rev. 2) and Raidcon (Aquacomputer Twinplex XT).
Will post benches of different raid levels in the storage forums later, speed is looking great so far. :D

Well I'm shopping for a new case and new coolers. Yes I give. Finding a case for this puppy is really pissing me off. I don't want to use the backplates as I'm pretty sure thats 99% where my problem is. Thats the only reason I bought my case, but it turns out the standoffs were for a full EATX not the CEB 12x10.5. ARGH.
My current case. If you look closely at the tray you'll see the standoffs, but they only fit the full eatx, maybe only off by an inch for the Z7S, but alas I didn't know that when I bought it and the fiasco ensued.
The Chenbro I'm looking at and the Enlight I'm looking at.
As for coolers, this was the best I could find at newegg.

Harddrive and memory came in. Memory bandwidth had improve to 4050MB/s at 333FBS. I am pretty happy with my system, but the overclocking had not been a smooth ride.
I can push the FSB to 400, but it will not pass any of the stablizing test. I am afraid that my L5420 is holding me back and there is not a way to raise the vcore with Z7S.
Until Asus release another bios with the a vcore feature, I am at a stop.:confused:

So I got an Open Box Z7S board and it didn't come with any accessories - no cables, sound card, debug card, etc. I plan on getting a case with the proper standoffs so I probably won't need the backplates. But, are there any accessories that you guys think I should get to make installation go smoothly?
Yeah thats no good, sorry man. I would at the very least call the people who you bought it from and tell them what is missing vs. sending the board back. That will probably be quicker. My RMA took over 2 weeks.Quote:

The separate soundcard is part of the motherboard , that's not an accessory in my opinion. The debug card is nice , but not really necesarry (although the power/reset buttons are cool )Quote:

I'm still undecided. I'm looking for a mid-tower case with the right standoffs. Chieftec has some cases that work. For example, the Chieftec GH-01B-BW GIGA looks pretty good. I'm also looking at In Win and Enlight since they offer a number of good options i.e IN WIN O3-S, IN WIN GD, Enlight PR42A101, etc. If you're looking for a full tower, there's more choices, since they tend to keep server boards in mind i.e. Cooler Master 1000. For whatever case, be sure to get a photo of the mobo tray and look for the right standoffs.Quote:

I know the Enlight PR42A1-01 works, I have confirmation from another Z7S user in the ASUS forums. Problem with this one is no side window or side fan, not sure if it has a front fan, it's quite tight, and only one rear fan. Right now I have 2 rear fans, 1 top, 1 front, and 1 side. Problem with looking at the MB tray pics is there is only about an inch difference between the CEB 12x10.5" standoffs we need and the full EATX standoffs most use. My current case had the latter, so I needed to use the backplates. I'll take a look at the other ones you mentioned.Quote:

You can see the cheap ram coolers (but they work), and most notably the extra room for an EATX MB. I also prefer this layout for the HDD's with a front fan, it keeps them really cool. Not pictured is the top fan, just behind the PSU top center, and the side fan. I hate these stupid IDE cables, so I'm going to buy a circular one. Also you can see with dual/dual slot 3870's there is very little room. I also placed some electrical tape on the end of the top card where it has potential to short on the heatsink.
Also if you look closely to the right of the board, you can see a few CPU standoffs for a full EATX board.
Is there anyway to Vcore mod the Z7S? I had search all over the internet but no result.
How about creating a patition to ASUS to include features in the bios that may be useful??
You can pinmod the CPUs for more Vcore. But what I'd need is VTT anyways..
A petition sounds good, since the first review boards had settings like Vcore and VTT available. I think they become available if you put a QX CPU in there... Maybe a bios hack would work.
Maybe we should ask TicTac if he can 'open up' the bios ;)

If I recall from the Inquirer, they did a review of the Z7S with qx9775. They mention that the vtt and vcore were absent from the bios. I can be wrong.Quote:

I'd try that alright except the RAM is at my friends house as this is for him, he forgot to bring it to me this morning, all 12GB of it. So I might have to wait until tomorrow. Just an idea, would the heat of a soldering iron be too much to apply to the top fins of heatsink to try and heat it up, even for a brief period?

I used a flathead screwdiver. That with some confidence and quite some force will solve the problem :D
