Gigabyte MA790FX DQ6

lightman, Was running 1.475, for benching 1.45 was fine but had odd instabilities.

Cooling is plain water, old swiftech block.

One thing i've noticed, compared to brisbane it actually doesn't get too hot and bothered with extra voltage. Though I found with the many Brisbane I overclocked, the later batches overclocked much better, but at the same time become less and less tolerent to voltage, i.e produced more heat than one would predict via the classic formula..

I wonder if K10 will be the same as they tweak the process.

Lightman: I never run it above 2V usually unless I'm going to drop to CR1 tRFC 75ns, which is what I use for benching as long as I can. The sticks do around 636MHz PL5 4-4-4-4 on 2.2V, and yes I cool them alright. ;)

The 8500 die quick with higher than rated voltage according to my experience but the 5300/6400 last longer with higher voltage, they seem to love it. Though it should logically be the opposite way round.

@ bingo13 could you also keep us up to date on the DS5 BIOS too.

My Phenom 9500 hit a wall at 2.6ghz and vcore 1.35(bios), set more no go more.
Suck. Do you see limit on vcore? Or i need to train my CPU?

I can not go over 235 if Cpu x 11.
Now i set cpu x 10 and htt 250mhz.

I would not, working with AMD right now. The good news is that I have a retail 9600 that has not failed at 2.38 VMem after 46 hours of full load.

I will have F3D (no TLB patch) posted up later today after stress testing, provided it works better than F3B.

How come DQ6 is the only 790FX motherboard of Gigabyte getting new BIOS?

No don't run that high VDIMM, D9 die very quick at those V (many people experience this, even failure at 2.2V). I wouldn't run them that high unless you have the VCore up as well. Plus what speeds do you really eed that high VDIMM for, 1400 or 1100 4GB? On Phenom you will hardly be running 1100MHz on RAM to need those volts for 4GB.

If they're rated for that much V then you should run them but I would be very cautious with Phenom.

General qs: which dividers can you guys on GBT boards run for memory?

MSI board won't do it for RAM that is not 1066 SPD rated but Gigabyte and maybe other boards will, so far. ;)

Still having weird problems with 4 sticks of 1gb... sometimes it wont allow me to boot into windows and require me to re-seat the memory.

This is my 2nd board ... well the first one didnt have the memory issue but a bad flash using @bios (piece of :banana::banana::banana::banana:) killed it and I got it RMAed

Haha that's where mine is right now, for exactly the same reason. I knew it wasn't my fault. :shrug: I fully agree with your opinions of @bios. I'm never using windows based flashing again. Actually that was the first time i'd ever flashed through windows and now I know why I never used it.

Yeah I got an email today from the disty saying Gigabyte have my board now and the new one should be shipped soon.

Mine happenend with the F3A bios flash. The bios actually flashed but then it wouldn't restart, so I think it flashed the incorrect bios because it killed the backup too.

I had no problem with @BIOS. :)

I don't have a meter yet, it's on my list for some day.
I'm still waiting on the RMD, New Egg hasn't even opened the box yet but it's only 2 days and they are pretty good about taking care of us.

I just replace TIM with IC7 from a sample tube and looks like a good 4C drop in temps 2 hours after application. AS5 took days. I also look at the VCore on this 4600 and it's sitting at 1.328 where I use to have to run it at 1.375. Definitely a nice board and great PSU. Will be great to get the 9500 back in it since my 6600 in a GA-P35 is hauling some serious butt at 2.8G and going up soon.

Today I played a bit with my mobo and decide to find if I can run NB at CPU speeds....

As you can see I can do it easily at these clocks, but what it gives?

Firstly L3 cache latency is way lower, then Cinemabench xCPU scaling is better and memory R/W numbers are better as well...

It helps in 3DMarks and games ;)

The clock above is max. truly stable under x64 on my CPU... Anything above and it will crash in Crysis after couple of minutes (BTW Crysis is a good stability test :) )

For me that option should be mandatory in every BIOS and every board. Unfortunately big corporations are ruled by different laws, so we might be forced to Errata 298 for rev. B2. At least Overdrive will have button to disable it...

Also hopefully our great TicTac will be able to upgrade BIOSes for us...:p:

New BIOS is out with the Errata option.

I know for a fact, the F3B Bios I am using on my DS5 has the ability to enable or disable the TLB Erratum patch.

I downloaded new BIOS F3 (Final) and it works fine!
I can enable Errata for K10 (default is DISABLE :up: ) and it has many more improvements and very helpful things like showing effective freq. next to memory adjustment or NB multi. setting!

Though performance of Phenom is still pretty pants - only due too clock speeds.

For the mean time im getting an X2 6400+ and sending the Phenom back, wait till the B3 9900.

That is what I can do under x64bit OS, my best from XP MCE was 14380 points ;) at 2640MHz and that was with low clocked NB. I think I will give it another go with high clocked NB :p:

KTE 2.5-2.6GHz NB at default voltages (1.165V)! We can't adjust that setting from the BIOS yet....
My CPU simply likes high NB clocks! I set multi to anything I'd like in up to 2.8GHz speed and viola!
Looks like half of my Phenom silicon is really good and other half is not so brilliant....

That's with the Phenom @ 2.6Ghz - stable, btw and the two Radeons at 850/2500.

CPU is limiting them so badly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but are you sure about this all?
CPU-Z has a known bug with flawed NB/CPU readings if you throw the NB too high in BIOS. We've been dealing with it for around 3 weeks now. What happens is, the system will downclock everything to keep your NB low near 2GHz. AOD as far as we know will report the most accurate values as the actual real frequencies. It happens because Phenom 9500/9600 cannot run more than 9x NB multi.
To verify all this, run EVEREST Ultmate and Crystal CPUID. They use various methods to detect the speeds. See if your EVEREST/CCPUID is reading the same as AOD (mem/ht/cpu), if they are, then what I'm saying is true and if not, then not so which is a first. I have a feeling your system is actually downclocked to keep NB near 2GHz and so the core/mem is actually underclocked and those AOD frequencies are correct. Because they only appear that way if Phenom takes a safety measure and actually underclocks despite the BIOS values you choose when they're too high (override).

I've attached an image of what the downclock looks like with a buggy CPU-Z and the correct AOD. Remember, NB actual high speeds will need more volts.

@KTE I did another test session to figure out that NB speed.

All software is showing same low CPU clocks as AOD is when running NB above 9x multi... Thing is performance is where it should be for 2.4GHz Phenom! I did couple of SPi tests, Cinebench4D, 3DMark2001/2006 and WinRAR with various NB multi.

It looks like non of the software is correctly reporting values.... AOD is showing wrong CPU/memory speeds, CPU-Z is showing hard to believe NB clocks.

Still I can report slightly different results when changing NB clock. For example WinRAR is faster at NB 9x than at 10x by 30-80KB/s but 11x multi gives same results as 9x???
That run of 3DMark from my previous post where I got 13488points NB2736 is higher than todays run 13408points with NB2052 (9x228).
On top of that Cinebench xCPU scaling is at best 3.09x when NB 9x contrary to 3.12-3.14x when NB 12x....

Differences are small enough to be counted as a measuring error but still there is a pattern....

If only we could test L3 Cache bandwidth using some software ;)

Run POV-Ray 3.7 with high NB clocks as you have above please with the readings for what AOD/CPU-Z shows and I'd like to see what results it gives you.

Because I'm aware of its perf scaling from 1.8GHz uptil 2.85GHz CPU 2.16GHz NB/HT, 518 4-4-4-4 RAM and can tell because I've ran it with downclock too. :)

Because this is raytracing engine we can't see much of difference between different settings. Still pattern is clear and results are repeatable...

BTW 3DM2001 scores 2000+ points lower with 1617MHz NB and 800+ lower with 2079MHz NB compared to 2772MHz NB ;)

Since in 32-bit which is slower than 64-bit for this app and Cinebench, when I ran CPU 2420MHz / NB 1980MHz / HT 1100MHz / RAM 440MHz 4-4-4-4-24 2T single channel, the results were a little faster than all those: 1642.89 PPS.

Also, synthetic benches won't be accurate here and that's why I'm not running them because they will obviously give grand results (they did with my 1.8GHz-3.1Ghz Nb results too). Real life ones will count fully though because they show the real hardware power. POV-Ray scales from 1498-1650 PPS from 2.2GHz to 2.42GHz on CPU MHz with Phenom.

I need some time and after about 2-3 hours I'll be able to downclock mine to the same MHz to see what difference it gives.

The problem with all this is, its already an established fact that CPU-Z bugs out like this when you put the NB multi high and when it does other better apps that read core registers will still read the correct values, not one app, all of them. Sammi himself thought these high NB values above 9x multi are bugged readings when I showed them him (2.6-3.1). Tony also could not get above 9x NB multi in all his testing but bugged results and there's a few more that have tested them and cannot (always get this bug). So I would be very weary. I thought the same things you are mentioning now around 3 weeks back in the K9A2 thread before I spent much more time thinking>testing and worked it out. :)

In fact, I guarantee you no matter which board you use, be it XP or Vista, if you change NB multi to above 9x for 9500/9600 you will get these bugged CPU-Z readings and AOD/EVEREST/CCPUID will show everything as downclocked. ;)

Do something. Most software runs off the most accurate method of calculating time which is based off CPU MHz readings (i.e. Super Pi). It uses Windows Performance Counters. Check what Windows says your CPU is booting up at. Those are BIOS reported values to it. ;)

KTE I presume you were running SSE2 version of POV-Ray for that score... Guess waht, I get almost same score as your when running that executable! Score 1651pps - NB2079(9x) CPU2424 :)

As we can see, despite 4MHz lower core speeds I'm getting higher score compared to my previous run...

BTW Windows System Properties says 1.82GHz for that run....

This morning a ran exactly same setup as yours and POV-Ray scored 1644PPS (NB1980).

Everest latencies and bandwidth are improving slowly... Thing is that when L3 cache is clocked higher than CPU profits are smaller that you would hope simply because bandwidth can't be utilized efficiently.

Now I need to go to work ;)

Please run the BAT file in there in the "NB overclocked mode" and it will tell you your real CPU frequency. :)

KTE, your small software is showing as others do (except CPU-Z)...
But images above and all other tests I did point to conclusion that CPU-Z is correct this time, at least in regards of CPU clock.

Also I heard from good source that AMD rev.B3 will officially reach 3GHz+ in 2H2008 plus 45nm chips will have lower latencies to caches ;)

Yeah I did something similar, mine were 2860MHz NB and 1980MHz NB @ 2420MHz CPU and 1980MHz HT. Many many tests, real tests. The video decoding/encoding proved it that CPU/Mem/HT clocks are the same. CPU-Z doesn't detect properly. Try and validate it with high NB, it'll fail like this: http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=286546

All other software is reporting correctly, it is reading everything from the core registers themselves as it should. However, the core itself is telling its frequency as low values for some reason and causing accurate software and OSes to all error. Meanwhile, the actual frequencies remain unchanged.

About the NB speed. There is only one software where I've seen any perf. difference with high NB readings: CPU-Z latencies, which I don't know if its synthetic (based on CPU-Z readings) or real-time. I will ask Franck about it. Sandra does not show NB speed gain whatsoever, neither anything other including all popular benchmarks be it synthetic or real-time and I ran them all that I could, even WCG benchmark. Performance was exactly the same, even in encoding/decoding, compression//decompression and encrpytion/decryption. In fact, decoding encoding 13 videos which took 15 minutes 56 seconds, took exactly the same time for both, absolutely same.

Keep up your tests. Yes I'll probably have BE soon, haven't contacted my uncle to ask if he has any yet and can't until Monday when he comes back. Only Intel can change that, if their quads hit in early Jan, because then I'll want to play with them first instead.

We had asked Gigabyte to change the terminology on the settings to something that 90% of the users would understand. :D Also, memory performance is finally back up to par and NB speeds should be stable up to 2.2GHz. There are still a couple of rough spots with 2GB memory modules but that will be addressed in F4 along with additional usability options. This BIOS also works with Crossfire X. ;)

Can not set NB x10. And any higher Htt will make mainboard reset clock to df.

I'm doing this in two steps

1. Set HTT220-228 and NB x10, if it boots to Windows then OK :up:
2. Back to BIOS and set desired HTT speed, should take off :up:

My CPU either likes high NB speeds or simply BIOS is not setting multiplier properly, but on the other hand I can't BOOT if I'm trying too high. The only thing I'm getting then is looong beeeep :D

Also higher HTT = lower NB speeds possible for stable operational...

I've just swapped out my POS K9A Plat for this and no matter what bios i try the highest multiplier reported is 15.5x.

Anyone else had this?

Does the new microcode automatically enable the TLB-fix or are they independent?

I've been away for a month so I hope you all had a great Xmas and new year.
A nice surprise when I got back was my replacement mobo has arrived. I have an issue with my Phenom though, on bootup it will only start with the 5.5 multi and it's running at 1.05v. It's almost as if it's starting with cnq active although it's disabled in bios. I can enable the 11 multi with OD with no issues.
Also I'm using F1 bios atm, what's everyone using now?

On a side note, I see you're using 4GB of RAM, is that 4x 1GB or 2x 2GB? And if it's 4x 1GB, how the hell do I overclock it? Besides the fact this board apparently doesnt even want to do 10x351 Im stuck with 12x293 and synched memory (which isnt working) and 14x251 with synched memory and low latencies. I thought 10x351 and using a divider might change things but well, it doesnt even want to do high HTT's. Ive no clue anymore:shrug:

I'm using 4 x 1gb.

My old board did 430 htt with the 5x divider with my 6400. It's an overclocking monster with K8.
I haven't tested this board yet, just installed the cpu last night. It obviously has issues with Phenom with the F1 bios. I lost my last board flashing to F3 so I was wondering if the F4A bingo has is available.

Are any of you fellas in Gigabyte land have any news on AMD / Source Code Bios Update in Progress?

I keep waiting and waiting on DFI for next official but it aint come to pass and the 12/11/07 is actually a Beta and it sucks! The only thing I can gather on this is that everybody is waiting on AMD:(

Thanks Lightman, I have just flashed F3 final.

I tried to run cpuz (1.43) and I'm getting everything greyed out on the memory tab, it's completely blank. Are you getting this?

The SPD tab is reporting ok as are all other tabs, why the memory tab isn't reporting has me nonplussed.
It's nice to have the 1066 option in bios. :up:

Well, most likely Im missing something. I tried adding Volts for NB and the HTT receive and transmit things, lowering multi etc but no go in high HTT's.

Also I still dont know whether Im missing something or not with OC'ing 4x 1GB as it's quite a disaster. Also, when I press ctrl + F1 in BIOS, the extra options, are they worth anything? What exactly do they do?

If I run Vista it's same for me. XP x64 and MCE = no problems with detecting values in CPU-z ;)

I like this BIOS. Not perfect but a solid one :up:

I will post up F4B tomorrow, F4A was too funky... :D Also, has anyone hit 3.2 yet with a 9600BE?

IIRC K8 was ok with Vista and Cpu-z.

I was having a play last night and was hitting 1100mhz with 1.9v with my ram. AMD really have done a fantastic job with this memory controller, all we need now is for it to run at cpu speeds. :yepp:

I'm getting random screetching (around 4 khz) at random when starting the pc.
This has only started since I installed the new motherboard. It is running at stock.
I've heard this same sound before when flogging the HT bus on my old Opty 170. I would have to set the HT bus to over 1200 to get it.
This one has me stumped as I'm getting it when my system is absolutely stock. (yeah I know, this is XS :p)
The cpu was fine in my original 790FX and also the Crosshair.
So I'm not sure if it's the motherboard or the cpu.

Any ideas.....?

Ive had that a lot of times with all sorts of hardware. People say it's condensators/MOSFETs or however they're named, they react to improved power load and start to shake very fast but unnoticable. Heard it's solvable with some glue on them, however it's not dangerous or damaging if you leave it like this.

I get it always when I OC my GPU's and load something 3D heavy too.

I think I found the problem regarding my 4x 1GB problem, not very sure. However it looks like my most right (red) DIMM socket is messed and when a DIMM is in there the PC is quite unstable. Will test some more.

Thus far I tested every DIMM alone and they all ran there stock speeds without problems and I Prime'd them as well. Then I checked dual channel in the yellow slots, ran fine, switched the DIMMs out for the other two and that fine as well. Then I ran 3 DIMMs, 2 in yellow and 1 in left red and didnt give a problem. Then I used 3 DIMMs again but now one in the right red and Orthos quit it within 10 seconds. With 4 DIMMs I hardly get into Windows without BSOD-ing:(.

Querious how the F4B BIOS will be, maybe it might solve it but I dont think so. I think my ReaperX DIMMs killed the DIMM socket somehow. It was hard to get the ReaperX's next to each other due to the increased width of the DIMMs. So I was like, 'sod that' and sanded some of the heatspreaders till they actually would fit, but with a little force though.

It worked all the time but the right socket was a little bit leaning to the right (DIMMs were more or less in a little 'V' form, but due to the heatsink the right one had to lean out more than the left one because the left ones couldnt lean out as much). But now I switched to normal sized DIMMs and it's unstable which is nonetheless quite strange. Maybe it needs to be in the same angle again as with the ReaperX seated, after all that was stable all times. Will try some more, but could be another problem as well.

Just flashed it and seems to work. 'On the fly' Voltage watch, or how ever I should call it, next to Voltage settings are very usefull. Checking out in a sec if this might have fixed my problem with 4 DIMMs as well, most likely not but you never know:p:

Anyway, for now it seems to be working nice. Could you enlight us a little with what has changed regarding to eventual fixes etc?

Now I read that question, didnt even check if tRAS works now, but I mainly use Memset anyway so didn't matter a lot either for me.

Hmmm, findings so far:

PC doesnt BSOD even before Windows loads @ 12x267 and RAM at stock speeds. However it does later on anyway. It just stays stable longer.

Also from my tests regarding my problem, my PC seems to be able to keep everything running with lower RAM speeds and tighter timings.

I know my 4th DIMM socket is more or less hanging between dead and alive, but does anyone know if higher RAM speeds might have an impact on stability if the DIMM slot isnt working well?

I mean, I see it as 'it does or doesnt work/make contact' and thus I fail to see why lower RAM speeds with tighter timings would have more stability than RAM stock settings (DDR1066 5-5-5-15 2.1V which overvolts to 2.15 in BIOS).

Thinking to buy a new mobo, not sure yet which one though. The same one (it's a good board after all, only thing is 4th DIMM slot not working well) or might as well get a DFI 790FX. It's just I think I spend enough for a while now but meh, don't want to sit here with PC parts while I wait on a RMA. RMA's can take up weeks and well, Ive enough experience with waiting :rolleyes:.

@ Rammsteiner, I feel your pain. It took 2 and a half weeks for me to get my new board.
Gigabyte, however were very good in that regard, they replaced the board after a failed flash with no questions asked.
I would stick with the Gigabyte board as it appears to be the best of all the 790FX models. I got mine before Phenom and it was an oc'ing monster with a 6400 in it. I'm not having any issues running 4x1gb sticks so I think unfortunately you've got a dud.

I thought Gigabyte boards had 2 Bios chips in them running redundant Bios:confused:

Need a little help here. My friend has this board (F4B BIOS) with a Phenom 9500, 2x1 GB A-Data 800+ EE ,a GeForce 7300GT and an Antec Phantom 500W (12V1: 17A, 12V2: 18A) power supply. The CPU is watercooled, the max heat it produced was 47 celsius at 2750. He think's that the chipset is limiting him to get the CPU frequency higher. He tried 260 MHz HT (10x260), but Everest stability test failed. With 11x240 (2640) everything worked well. The NB freq and RAM freq was divided. He tried to raise the chipset voltage (+0,3V), but it didn't helped.

Is the chipset limiting him or somethig else? Any recommended BIOS setting?
