Sorry SOLDNER-MOFO64, but you are wrong on two accounts.

The first is that you say that you need lots of $$$ to bench at the very top. That's wrong for a start, although parts cost this is quite a cheap pastime compared to a lot of others. How about modding cars for instance, that can run money a lot quicker. I do kiting/buggying and yet I found I spent nearly £2000 in the last year and I do not even compete. Rather than saying it costs a lot to compete it is more accurate to say that a lot of people do not have that sort of money or wish to spend it on other things, but saying you need a lot of money per se is wrong.

Now considering that it does not cost a lot of money and that most people can easily get £5000 on credit cards to pay for it more than easily how come there is not a mad stampede up to the top ? Because it takes dedication, time and effort and the willpower to get there. It means taking the hobby to the next level, a level that most people are not prepared to push to ( even though it is seemingly easy nowadays according to you, forgetting that people now have to fabricate pots or cascades to get the temps ;) ).

That's the reason why not everyone is up there, not money, that is easy to get, it is the dedication and willpower and that is not so easy to come by in 99 people out of 100.

The money $$$ argument is just a red herring....... people were using it when we moved off Peltier coolers and water all those years ago and they are still using it today and it is still wrong....

That's whole point, many people don't have the money but then again a lot of people do not even have the money to buy a PC in the world .. so where does the arguement stop ? Name me any hobby which does not cost any money?

Your second paragraph sums up that as well of course what I was trying to get at. It's more to do with how serious you are than how much money you have.

Most of us just dabble and are content with that, the people at the top are driven.

1- Credit to whom deserves it. Benching for the top is not only a matter of money.

2- On the other hand without money/sponsor you cannot bench for the top

3- Therefore you must have both: money/sponsor and skills

hmm i believe tweaks separate KP from others, there are a few that have that edge in performance that comes from no $$$$$. (OPB,Pedro, OPP, Stoolman, Kinc, Team Japan in super pi)

Soldner, skills are quite involved in Xtreme OCing either you like it or not.

First of all, you think ( lets say ) that you found the max benchable clocks for your CPU [ par example ].
But then, there comes a more "hardcore" guy, with skills 'n' knowledge in electronics, and finds a "pretty neat" mod which allows him to clock the CPU past you.
Bang, game over.

Think this is impossible ?
Get real, it has happened before ( 'recent' hint "Dothan" ).

Let's say that won't happen this time.
You decide to participate in the SuperPi 1M/32M battle.
You are familiar with lots of tweaks, and you get a decent score.
But then again, another guy, who spent a lot of time "bugging" with Windows, and extra software, using 1-2 tweaks that you and nobody else use [ because he found them ].
Bang, game over again.

Can give you a bunch of similar or non-similar examples, but this is kinda simplified again.

Already considered that you can control the LN2 on 3 pots, and tweaking your RAM to the max.

Anyways, if you think that you're that good ( or not, lets don't make it seem like a personal situation ), lets say that skill ain't a factor on overclocking.
Now, we set up a rig, and have 10 people benchmarking on 3D Mark2001 & SuperPi 32M on it.
Are you sure that you're going to score the same or even close to the top guy ?

I have NEVER seen benching with LN2 in real life but it MUST be hard to control the temps in 3 pots. Keeping them a degree or two up and down in 3 pots HAS to be VERY hard. You have to pour the right amount of LN2 at the right time. Miss that, the temperature will rise and that won't be good. Pour too much, coldbug strikes, everything goes up in a reboot (the scores i mean).

Vince is part of the elite OCers and one of the most hardcore among hardcore benchers out there!

yes they do, some at -70° and some at -150°, but i don't think that there is a Core 2 Duo chip, that would be able to handle LN2 all the way, about -180°

Alright, lets get the thread back on topic now ;). Only thing I have to say about alot of the bs that I read here and similar stuff elsewhere:
This thread is about the HW being pushed, not the guy pushing it. It has always been like that for me. I don't post threads referring to myself in third person (really :banana::banana::banana::banana:ing lame), and I dont post multiple threads on the same bench rig like other fools do...as if one post isn't enough. I said the scores would go up and I meant it. I posted up low scores to start, so others wouldnt be discouraged to bench the HW.
If you think you can beat my scores on on the orb easy, and it's all about money/sponsor blah blah, bench the damn HW and prove it, don't talk :banana::banana::banana::banana:. I have lots of scores on the orb with diff vid cards/cpus that can be had cheap now. 780m/7800gtx512, diff fx' cpu's, 7900gtx 512 etc. It's so easy to sit there and say "I could do it" after alot of the innovation in cooling has already been done isn't it?? HMMM where was 3d benching 1.5yrs ago......
I benched for the longest time up until middle of this year out of my own pocket competing against others that were hooked up by manuf. I worked my ass off 50-60 hours week then benched/worked on containers at night, so I could to afford the HW and get my bills paid (barely).
Anything I have now was earned 200%, as with anything in life you get out what you put in and I think I've paid my dues. That's all I have to say about the bs comments I read...
These 8800gtx's are a joke compared to how hard and how much groundwork it took to clock the 7900gtx's high rofl. Those cards have to be cheap now....go for it ;):

Everything I am doing now is SLI. If it can't be done with 2 gpu's, it prolly won't be done my me, but I'm pretty sure it can. Maybe after multi-gpu testing, I'll try for some single gpu benchmarks. With my latest entry to the 01' orb, I have the highest clocked Conroe on the 01 orb at 5340mhz. I'd say testing is going pretty good so far(not maxed yet).
If you guys saw the CPU unit I was using, you wouldnt believe it ;).
I will reveal it soon...

The 100k barrier will be broken multi-gpu, that's 100% sure. 100k Single card will be more difficult, but seeing the awesome clocks of Kinc's 8800gtx, convinced me to say it'll be possible.

The only thing that's bugging me is the reason why you won't show us 100k. Letting Hipro5 break the barrier looks quite nice, but to me it's just saying: "I have the power to decide who gets the fame and who doesn't. Hipro5 is a legend, if he's the first to go 100k+ or if he doesn't.

I am thinking mulit-gpu as well.
If I had 100k I would post it up, believe me massman. I am just not putting all my efforts into that atm. What's wrong with wanting someone else to achieve a nice milestone? I've had more than my share, and fame is not why I do this.

It would be wrong if you had the 100k, just because everyone would congratulate the one that finally did it, in this case Hipro, knowing that someone already broke it before you did. The satisfaction of breaking that barrier won't be as big as it will be now. I may have expressed myself wrong by putting the word 'fame' in my post, let's call it honour.

Anyway, as you don't have a 100k+ barrier, there isn't anything wrong at all and I hope Hipro or another legend/future legend will break it. :)

Yes, still benching the same played out B1 from conroe launch. The chip never fails me. I have dropped it 3 times at least on hard surfaces and split two corners of the chip even, and it's still charging. Benched it on 975x/SLI, 590SLI, and now 680iSLI. The same chip owns all the records, and this is def the hardest I've pushed it yet :D

Thank you very much :). I take more pride in making the units than benching... which btw my orb scores look to be trampled right quick by lots of guys :D. Last time I tested single card some time ago, a 120mm fan I had cooling the fet area on single card testing mid bench fell over and grabbed the mcp mod off the board and shot it across the room like a rocket. Unfortunately it took 3 traces and a resistor along with it :D rofl so I need another board.
I was playing around with the cards some a little exploring their overclockability. It's really all about the shader clock. Here's a tip for those guys struggling at 850mhz where the bench just won't load and freezes up...Lowering shader clock from 1350 to approx 1200, got me to 966core 03' stable easy at -75/1.7v. It was something like 3000 points more in score single card going from 1350 shader/846-1200 to 1200 shader/966-1200 :D. In 03' the lower shader clocks seem to effect score more positively than in 06', where the diff is maybe more like 2-300, but still nice. Haven't tested 05 or 01 yet. I think a good approach to extreme clocking these cards is to first find the highest core frequency the card can run, then gradually increase the shader clock up until it deteriorates the overall core clock. Maxing all 3 clocks is the key I think. Another thing is I see guys running all different pci-ex frequencies, but so far in my limited single card testing on 965p and 680i, I've yet to change the pci-ex frequency from auto without issues like 7900gtx had. This card is very easy to overclock, just set and go :D
