I am very sad to say that I may have killed my xeon :(
I was having some freak things happen with my RD600, and it would only boot @ stock, sometimes even freezing in the bios @ stock...
Throw it in the Commando, no post. Code on the back was:
"CPU INIT" :*(

Came here to seek some advice about my 3060.
My specs:
L629A780 3060 366x9@1.48v
P5b Deluxe
Tuniq tower 120
Corsair 620HX
I'm trying really hard to hit 3.6 and i've hit a wall already at 3.3ghz. I can only run 3.3ghz stable at 1.43V. 1.48 set in bios. With the side panel open, I'm running at ~60C Load ~50Idle. Reported in Coretemp/TAT. I can boot into windows at 3.6@1.55v but fails orthos immediately. Raising Vcore doesn't help in this case (up to 1.65v in bios). 3.4 wont run orthos for more than 2-3minutes. Min volt. required to boot into 3.4 was 1.45v raised as high as 1.55v but can't get it stable. I've remounted the Heatsink about 6 times now the past month, all temps were the same except one time when i put too little AS5 and idle temps were in the 60's.
This all points to a Heat related issue, Could I have gotten a bad chip? Ambient temps in the room is about 70F. Everyone else with A chips seems to be doing pretty well, even on air. My friend has the identical setup, ordered the same time and I helped him setup his machine, he idles and loads consistently 10C cooler than me. Just seems odd that our setup is that off. I know there are variables due to ambiet temps. That's the only difference I can see.
Just seeing what the guru's here to say. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

is 1.35v ish real bad for priming 3600 mhz ?
I just got my 3060, L631B.... I'm excited to try some OCing with it. I finally got the entire system running nice and stable at all stock settings. The thing running a bit 'below' its suggest stock settings is my Memory. Any suggestions on where to start?
4004 thats also prime stable 1.65v i did i suicide run @ 4.15 for fun :) 7638a563 off zzf :)

HI guys,
Soon I'll get one of these, I hope mine will rock as yours :D

Great chip, im happy :woot: , now i just need to do something to handle those temps... Lapping and maybe order a Tower 120 (using TR XP-120 now).
I just got mine (same stepping as yours) running along fine at 3.6GHZ with 1.325vcore. But I had to lap the core yesterday before I could get the temps down. I am at 36C idle and 48C load. Before I was at 47C idle and 60C load. Once I started lapping I looked at the IHS and couldn't believe how concave this thing was. Intel sucks for putting these $325 chips out there with such horrible IHS's.Quote:

Hey, question, I was just able to buy one of these Xeon chips for $240 shipped.
Will it work with a ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail board ?
Or do I need a bios update or is it impossible due to hardware / chipset?
Thanks for the help. I can maybe cancel this order.
I really would like to have this answered asap.
Thanks in advance!
Nice volts. I can run mine below 1.4v at 3.6GHz, but then it will reboot when running TAT at 100% both cores. 1.4125v (1.365v reported by IDU @ full load) is the lowest TAT stable. Prime/Orthos is no problem so maybe i shouldnt care about TAT. Gonna lap it when i get a Bad Axe 2 next week and then see how high it can go.Quote:

They are the same.
OMG, so it's only differ from the name only? there's no advantage using Xeon, in my country Xeon more expensive about US$5-US$10 than conroe 6600.
thanks fhchris for the answer :-)
Xeons are better quality than a normal Conroe E6x00.Quote:

My last Xeon could prime 3600 @ 1.35v easily, with 7+ hours of 3903 walling the board.
IMHO, YOU HAVE A GOOD CHANCE AT GETTING A BETTER X3060 THAN X6800!
Afireinside's L630A Xeon, "handpicked" by newegg ;D

My X6800 could not even pass 1m @ that speed.
Just be carefull what you get, as here are also 763xyyy  Xeons around - so far i have seen 3050 and 3060īs with that FPO/Batch. They do NOT clock that well :( , they stay very cool (stock-idle- ~ 20to25c) but thatīs it. Try to get a L630 or L631 and you are good to go ;) for 3.6GHz between 1.3V and 1.35V. Best L631B115 i had so far could do 3.71.35V, 3.8@1.40V :clap:Quote:

I will see whats the exact stepping and check:D
Just bought 2- 3070s Retail Box from Newegg. They were both L632B. Testing now on a P5N32-E Plus.
Let me know your results :)Quote:

First thing I noticed was that this CPU had the worst heatspreader I've ever seen. If Intel selects these CPUs then certainly not by their heatspreaders. I applied a thin layer of thermal-grease and pressed it onto a plane glass-panel and the impression was only a thin line from the very edge of the hs. So I tried a slightly thicker layer of grease, just as much as I'd use when actually putting on my watercooler - same result. So I had to start grinding and polishing even before putting it to use for the first time, just hoping it wasn't a defect one. On the picture you can see the thin margin of copper where the sandpaper had taken away the coated surface of the hs; w/out grinding, this copper-line would've been the only contact.
As for overclocking I can definitely say that this CPU is better than my 6600 (which isn't the best), but it's far from beeing a monster-overclocker. At default speed I can use less voltage and it runs much cooler than the 6600, furthermore I can clock it much higher at stock voltage (3,3GHz), but until now I couldn't manage to get it to 3,6GHz Orthos small FFTs stable at 1,44V.
But I think I have to check my mobo a little better to be sure about that. It surely has massive droop. Maybe a serious overclocker could get this CPU to 3,8GHz or more. Until now 3,5GHz at 1,44V (1,5V in BIOS) is the maximum to be small FFT stable.
BTW Orthos blend test would pass w/ much higher frequencies, so I think for sole CPU stability check small FFTs are better.
Will post if further testing gains better results.
I got my Xeon 3060 from Newegg last week, but my membership here was not approved until today, so here goes.
Sorry, no pics yet, but I did copy this down off the top of the processor.
2.40GHZ/4M/1066/06
Intel Xeon
3060 SL9TZ PHILIPPINES

Pack Date was Feb. 1, 2007.
Intel's site says this is a B2 stepping
L631B115 here, from Germany. VID=1.225v. All Right.
My xeon came with a small whitish mark near a corner, in the bottom. All the 3060 has it?
Hey Vega, where did you buy your one?
L631B from newegg.
quick tests.
1.35 volts, stock voltage - 3600 mhz stable.
1.45 volts, top windows speed 4060 mhz.
1.45 volts top stable speed 3.97 ghz.
temps are horrible though.
the IHS has a really bad bowing to it, not concave like usual.
cooling, just plain water.
CPU isnt mine, my friend came by cause his P5WDH new from newegg, doesnt work. so he wanted to test his ram and CPU here.
seems like a great CPU to me.

1.35 stock? That is too high for xeon. Which is your VID?Quote:

VID in coretemp
1.35 volts is normal.
look at the box.
In the box says 1.35 Max, in my Bios says default 1.325, and really the VID is 1.225, and my motherboard really is sending 1.20v (possibly 0.025 Vdrop) to mic:VCORE
Rolled the dice with Newegg and looks like I lucked out.....
L631B115 :hump:
Ordered the 6th, received today, 8th.....
I have a Xeon 3060 L631B115 pretested to run on 413FSB with 1.388V (in windows) but I have several problems get my system stable I have ran dual prime small ffts withouth problems for 9h+ but blend test it gave me an error within 1-2 minutes...could it be an incompatibility issue with my ram?...all my components are in my sig...
I had a E6600 L624AXXX before and never had this problems...
Regards,
Primoz
just got Xeon 3060 six days ago, I've found it's L631B115  I need 1.42v to run @3.7Ghz but unable to run higher. I use P6N SLI Platinum, it can post 3.8ghz@1.42v but still freeze in windows, I try variate voltage up to 1.54v but still unable to hit 3.8ghz stable  .
Where are you guys ordering from?
I'm going to order one from the Egg.......wish me luck?
I got it from local INTEL distribution in indonesia (Terra Computer System)
here some picture taken six days ago.

Any new emergences in the Xeon world for super chips and weeks? Im thinking about buying a new one soon
Just how does one get a hand picked chip from NEwegg?
I really would like to know what stepping I am getting.
Just received a L643G009 from Newegg, it runs about the same temps on air as my L631B115 on water, and so far is priming at 3.7 but at 1.52 volts
I just got two 3060s from newegg. Incredible temps on both of them. They both are L643G009's
Seriously, the idle temp is about 25C, load of about 45C.
Impressive chips.
I so should order one but I am indecisive
I'm beginning to wonder how accurate these core temps are on my 3060's.
Now that I've started pushing them, the socket temp actually ends up being higher than core temp. Something seems a little off.
ordered a 3060 from newegg yesterday and got a l631f561 will have to wait until monday to play with it as they dicked around with sending the motherboard out.
I ordered one on Monday and it just arrived from newegg. Exact same chip you have:
XEON 3060
L631F561
I'm testing in a P5B dlx right now at 400*9
it failed orthos immediately @ 1.35vcore
my vdroop on p5b is terrible so I might need to do the pencil mod tonight./ brb
EDIT
okay, I just set 1.45vcore in bios. (idle= is 1.416) (load =1.3840v!!!!) I watched the vcore drop in AI suite right before my eyes and Orthos failed immediately after the drop..
0.034 total vdroop
0.066 total vdrop (small fft)
this sux. I'm not doing anymore testing until I do the pencil mod.
brb
good luck with the pencil mod. Im thinking about going to a friends house to throw this chip in just to see what it can do. have one with a asus p5w dh deluxe and one with a aw9d-max. trying to just have the patience till my new mobo comes on monday though........
Pencil mod got the 3.6 stable.
Before pencil mod
bios 1.45
idle 1.416
load 1.3840
after
------------------
bios 1.45
idle 1.4240
load 1.4160
temps are awesome 27c idle (apogee block)
411*9 was a fail in orthos at the same vcore
gotta kick it up some more
I have a 2nd shot at 4ghz. another 3060 on monday. :toast: lemme know how yours goes.
no price cuts on the Xeons guys, grab them up while they are hot :)
glad to hear the pencil mod helped out with it. Ill definantly update the thread with my results come monday night.
which will undoubtedly make them a whole lot less popular when compared to the 6600 a 10$ diffrence is one thing but if they arent going to drop the price on the xeons theres going to be a whole lot more than a 10$ diffrence between the 2. :(
Mabye we will just have to buy other kinds of UP Xeons :)

Xeon 3060 + Abit QuadGT 1066strap + Crucial 10th Anni sub4ghz spi1M:D
My best so far, this chip does over 4300mhz on water, love the Xeons.
Wow! Very nice ram clock/cpu clock combination!
:toast:
I just received my 2nd Xeon from Newegg. This one shipped from jersey warehouse. L643G009
I am going to compare it to my other one. I hope this is better. That topped out at 3.6ghz. 3.7 was unstable no matter what voltage. we'll see...wish me luck.
I installed the L643G009..
Not good. I didn't change any settings and windows couldn't even complete loading. tried higher vcore 1.5-1.6 and made it into windows but orthos would stop after 1 minute or less!!! :(
Lets just say that chip isn't in my rig anymore.
Back to the L631F. Good luck :)
I'm looking into getting one of these but I don't want a week 40+ Xeon my week 42 Conroe can't do 3.6Ghz stable. has anyone ordered this cpu within the last 8 days from the egg and still got a week 31?
Time to revive this thread.
Just tested two 3060's, L629. Mobos used: pn5-e sli and g33m-ds2r, as coolers zalman cnps7700AlCu and TT SonicTower, both with arctic silver 5 correctly applied ;)
Although the coolers don't get really hot, coretemp and speedfan report horrible load temps (above 75 C) at around 3.2GHz so clocking them above 3.4 would inherently involve water.
As a matter of fact one of them would not go past 3.1GHz orthos stable on air no matter what.
I have another two chips as reference for the boards/coolers, a 6400 which primes stable at 3.2GHz and a 4300 perfectly stable at 3.3GHz, both at default vcore.
And a big "no,no" to the witty grandmas around here, xeons are not binned for lower voltages or temps, just rebranded 6600's.
I got a xeon 3060 some timeago. L644F011 as i seen that new cpu:s don't oc so good i can't complain on this with P5K DLX as many said need a littlebit higher vocre:)
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/5...thosqk2.th.jpg
I like to get my xeon 3060 running OC in a Server Environment. In Fact 24/7.
Till now it runs rockstable (24h Orthos Blent) at 3375Mhz with 1,35V under Water at about 54 Degree while under load.
What are your OC rockstable Settings which you can recommend for 24/7 ?
My xeon runs a little hot. Guess it is the Apogee GT :(
Hi guys,
I've had my 3060 for a while now. I bought it from http://www.priceguidenetwork.com/ and asked Phil for a specific batch # (Batch # L709A523).
Here are some of my results:
3600MHz at 1.28Vcore
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e.../36001.28V.jpg
3770MHZ @ 1.32Vcore
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...kVolts3770.jpg
3907MHz @ 1.4Vcore
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...s/30603907.jpg
4104MHz at 1.45Vcore.
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...s/30604104.jpg
4153MHz @ 1.5Vcore
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/e...s/30604153.jpg
One hell of a CPU, I run it day to day at 3770 @ 1.32Vcore. :D
damn xeon chips seem great has anybody used new one that have sse4 because i was wondering if that would boost performance
nope correction its on xeon x3220

No current Intel cpu's have SSE4 period. Penryn only!

say if it did what would that mean for performance and ur link didnt work
