I don't think the word means what some of you think it means. To "re" something, it has had to named before. What was Barts named before, in terms of consumer product? Nothing. To name something different from what you expect it to be named is not renaming.
And to compared this with putting a new sticker on an old product to sell as new. That's beyond ridiculous.

Personally I can't say I'm a fan of changing the naming scheme. I didn't really like it when Nvidia did it and I don't think AMD should do it either. But in the long run it's not what matters.
What matters is the price/performance ratio of these new cards. We will know that after release when they get into enthusiasts hands. There will be plenty of time to judge their success/failure after that.

The marketing may have lost the naming consistency of the last 2 generations of cards but if you think people who are buying higher end hardware just blindly spend money without make a remotely informed decision, thats just plain ignorant.
Odds are the 6870 will cost less than the current 5870 thus making it more of a 5770 comparable replacement ( as far as the lineup goes ) so I can care less what the cards are called. In the end its about what can a product do for the customer and how much they have to pay to get one into their hands. They can call a card the super duper epic fail over 9000 edition for all I care if its the right price and does something worth its weight in salt. Enough said.

People need to get over the name similarity. AMD changed things up by making the 5870X2 = 5970 after there was a 3870X2 and 4870X2. They can change it again if they want and make the high end single GPU the x970's. Big deal - so long as the naming scheme makes sense within the generationQuote:
