Dothan @ CT-479 - howto and fixes.

I've got a wierd problem when overclocking my 740 on my P4C800E-Dlx:

• I boot with a multi of 10 and the FSB at 250 MHz
• I use clockgen to increase the FSB
• I test with SuperPi for each step and it is good up to 265 MHz
• At 270 MHz I get an error during the SuperPi
• I lower the FSB to previuos settings and still get errors
• I get "Not convergent.." at the very start of the test even when lowering the FSB down to 100 MHz

What causes this? :(

Also I cannot boot from bios with a FSB above 250 MHz. Any sugestions there?

Edit: Also I cannot reboot after setting the FSB over 250 MHz with clockgen - I must shut down to be able to boot again.

This has been discussed before but since there are 49 pages of replies, here is a summary

After you get that error in SuperPI you must reboot to reset the processor.

When you reboot, Clockgen set the FSB in such a way that it is remembered by the BOIS... in effect rebooting at 10 x 265 instead of 10 x 250. In the PM, the voltages get set after the multi and FSB are set. That way people can use a much higher FSB in clockgen than boot FSB.

Higher multi? Like 11? But when trying 270 MHz fsb that would give me like 2970 MHz, wich is a bit on the high side :P: I don't think changing the multi affects the SuperPi bug. I have found out, however, that closing the clockgen and/or cpuz progs might solve the SuperPi issue, so it is runable again. My normal setup is booting at 11x250 and increasing to 260 with clockgen after boot. I wish someone would fix just that in the bios..

Hmm.. I had to read that sentence a couple of times before I understood it. :D This happens in the boot sequence at system startup right? So the processor clocks is set to i.e. 11x250 while it still has it's default voltage of 1,28 volts, and some milliseconds later it get its bios set voltage of 1,55 volts..? That's how it works?

But honestly, it doesn't make sense. Because there is just the 'FSB over 250 MHz' setting that doesn't boot, I can still boot at 2900 MHz with the FSB under 250 MHz, wich requires a lot more voltage than say 9x255 that doesn't boot.

The RAM is not the problem, I've tested them at 280 MHz before on my prescott. (And I just rebooted and tried to set them on a divider just to be sure). I use the latest bios.. 23 something.

The cold boot sequence is a follows (from what I have read in these posts)
1) Muti changes get set
2) FSB chages get set
3) VCore get set.

So, on a cold boot of 10 x 250 gives 2500mhz which is do-able on default VCore.

When the system hangs, reboots or you reboot, option 1 and 2 are repeated but with the last saved value. I guess the BOIS writer never guessed these would be changed in windows.
1) Set mutli to 10
2) Set FSB to 275
oops, default VCore not enough for 2750 mhz ... therefore system hangs.

Turn off machine and do a cold reboot fixes it.

I have never heard of any one booting so high. Most can not even do 2900mhz using windows tool (myself included). The only people able to maintain >2900mhz are Phase Changers and 1 or 2 air/water cooled.

If you can boot and maintain 2900mhz at a lower fsb, then be very happy with that. :) .

I personally boot at 10 x 201 then use a program call SetFSB in the startup to set the FSB to 275 which is what I run for every day use.

Okey! Could be good to know all that :) I understand the changes made in windows is saved and booted from when rebooting. Therefore by setting the FSB over 250 MHz in either bios or windows the same bios issue will kick in. Hopefully it's fixable :)

I am happy for being able to boot and do some brief work at 2900 MHz, but also I cannot use FSB's at or over 270 MHz, so it's not all glory :p:

Will try to reflash now to see if it helps.

Edit: Didn't help. However this is a minor issue I will ignore and learn to live with anyways :p:

Using Firefox, when I click the link, I get a download box, and the appropriate message. I tried it several times, and in one case it didn't work, so you might just try again. In any case, I think it's the Taiwan FTP site.

with the newest bios of P4C800 can have adjustament of multiplier and Vcore?

At least with the P4C800E Dlx yes. Voltage from 1,28 to 1,60 volts.

the pentium-m is running since a good time not without trouble - i wrote down my whole mod with ncu2000 - protection shim - ct-479 and p4 retentionmodul mod. the pics are not very good, but better than none (bad camera:( )

drop the mulipler and up the FSB. In benching 10 x 280, I am at 25.5 sec for 1M PI. You should be closer to that. Try 10 x 270 (if you ram can handle it)

if i try to fash the P4C800E-DLX bios on P4C800 with bootblock trick? can i have the Multiplier change?

Dragon - yes, I flashed my P4c800DLX (non E) with the -E 023 BIOS using the bootblock trick and I have full vcore and multiplier adjustment of my Dothan.

I haven't done this myself, but I believe you need spaces before the last two virgules, i.e., ...rom /n /pbcn

If you use the latest afudos, your board will not work!
