on the m2rs its a problem i think..
Im pretty unimpressed with my first DFI motherboard.
at first it did quite well in OCing my Phenom 9500 to 2.7Ghz.
However with my Geil Ram it limited me to just under 3.0Ghz OC with the 9950.
And today I replaced my Geil with 2x2GB OCZ Reapers 8500C5 and I cant get past FSB 205 (stock Multi and +100mV and loose mem timeings Vdimm @2.300) I was hopeing to get the RAM upto 1100 at the very least, and hoping for nearer 1200.
I currently I cant get the OC using a DRAM multi of 4 (800) that i could with the Geil.
I dont know if its the board or the chip that I have.
But one thing I know, unless some 'all singing, all dancing' bios comes out that allows me to get an OC of around 3.2 AND Oc the ram to a respectable level, then I most definately will go back to what I know and buy an Asus.
I have tried all sorts with my geil and am currently still playing with the Reaper. (BTW whats all the point with this "Tony's SPD?", I googled it and am not sure of the benifits)
Id like to say I have a decent idea of how to OC a system. but this just doesnt seem very solid at all.
I have looked over BE's bios at the start of the thread and tried variations on that but with no real luck.
Does re-flashing bios with the same bios more than once help at all in flushing errors/instability out?
What is the best version out for my board?
I like the DFI, but I bought it becuase I thought it would be bullet-proof (to be fair it has to an extent), and a brilliant OCer, but I have not found that the case.
hehe just bought a dk 790fx-m2rs to replace the gigabyte in the second pc :D just 60€
I have some issues with overclocking PII 940 more then 4Ghz. I've a BSOD 0x0000000A when Win XP booting.
might be your chip. i was not able to do that as well.
rgone stated, that with imc integrated into the chip, oc much more depends on the chip itself then in former times. and i did a cross-check, sent that chip to a friend, another system, and exactly the same oc.
when talking about differences between boards, bios quality becomes a factor of immensely increased importance... besides the pwm section.
campbell: yesterday night it happened to me as well. btd from gaming with a scratch in the speakers, and prime revealed something is wrong. pwms were HOT.
now the chip seems to need 25mV more to be stable, but the weird thing is, the ram does not want to do the same oc before as well. ri´ght now i'm reseating coolers on the board and then will have another look at it. its not that dramatically, as 3,5ghz @ stock clocks still work, so does 1066ram, but it has NEVER happened to me before so i hear your voice now more clearly..^^
The SB PLL table is screwed as well. 120~140~130~150.
Thanks, I'll try to srew SB PLL .
SB PLL doesn't help. I'm waiting for the new bios.
ahh the sb pll voltage.. alright..
after reseating the cooler my OC does now work again.. but i should have done the nb cooler as well, now that is the hottest part xD next weekend..
and my ballistix get weaker and weaker.. i hope they will sustain the 1066 @ 2,09v...
I sent Phenom II chips in for RMA and have 9600 BE back in M2R and JR 790GX is on the Bench empty.
I have warned you guys about current Bios what you do with that information is up to you though. Me Personally I will not see my 940 BE for about 2 weeks and 9600 BE is left at stock and I certainly hope D.F.I has not taken this criticism lightly and it prompts them to code adequate Bios of worthy D.F.I AMD Status so we can put this negative feelings about this ongoing situation behind us.
I am really going to push for a collaboration between D.F.I and a few select people to do extensive testing on AMD Bios front for 790FX-M2R & 790FXB series boards if I could get them to concede to sending out 3-4 select people (Myself Being 1 of the 3-4 People) a 790FXB Motherboard for dedicated and extensive Bios Testing I really believe that we could get these Bios Issues resolved with the feedback and submission of Bios Bug Reports and expedite this whole process and correct this problem/problems in Real time so D.F.I can Claim the AMD Overclocking Crown once more.
I Certainly Hope that I can get this to happen as I do not see this being corrected in any other way short of people blowing up their Processors and Souring them about using or Buying D.F.I . People losing their hardware do to Bad Coded Bios more often then not will not be as Nice as what I was about the experience and this is not the Proper or good way at all to find out about Bios Problems! 98% of People Using "Beta" Bios DO NOT submit Feedback they only piss and Moan when something bad Happens if the Beta was submitted to select few for week to 10 days to few select people before OK to released to public then that would alleviate a number of issues right there .......(its a start and a safe bet!) not the definitive answer to the problem but all important aspects of Bios would be checked and scrutinized and info passed on to D.F.I before a Beta release candidate to the masses is posted. This really needs to be done! For the cost of 3-4 Boards to select testers from D.F.I the cost to them for that is insignificant compared what this is costing them with current situation and Bad Feeling being generated by end User Experience with Current Situation across all D.F.I AMD Boards!
BE, but Im confused now.
Either the PWM special control (the extra percentage Volts) on the M2R and/or the Vcore ripple was the problem right? My board seems to be fine regarding ripple:confused: I only suffer from Vdrop, but after it's 100% solid.
I hope the 790FXB is fine, if this thing screws anything up, DFI is air for me. Before I install my WC Ill reseat the PWM cooling and tighten the bolts good, add HR-05 heat sinks on top of it. For the rest, nothing I can do to improve things.
If they :banana::banana::banana: up, I dont know what to buy, but it wont be DFI. Anyway, could you please enlighten a bit what the real issue is then? Cause thus far it seems like Ill be fine... I hope:rolleyes:
OK...This is Not to Be Taken out of Context! I cannot comment on 790FXB Boards I do not own one! However I do own a JR 790GX which is but for limited time as it is for intended HTPC Build to sell and I cannot beat it up and sell it I do not do stuff like that!
My statement is only to curtail Possible Bios Issues on Current Board offerings 790FX-M2R is not current Board Offering (But we Still want Bios Issue Fixed!)
So for anyone to get worked up about my Post above in Regards to D.F.I 790FXB Motherboards ......Don't!
My Post above is a direct Statement to D.F.I inc Taiwan no one else ....OK?
<3 I still do agree with you.
There was like nothing wrong with my 790FX-DQ6, ordered this M2R in like Februari '08, and still they're failing at having a good BIOS:shakes: Hardware wise this board does deserve to be under DFI's name but not BIOS wise, while all the DK boards do not deserve to be under DFI's name regarding hardware but do, well, more or less, BIOS wise... WTF:mad:
since i have reseated the pwn cooler, the board runs my 940 @ 3,6 at stock voltage, pwm's ~46°C. i thought i had the same issue like you campbell, but luckily it wasnt...
what are the things you experienced with the fxb?
with my m2r, I have seen no voltage ripple that is dangerous so far, and I'm leaving it alone.
I hope that they get this worked out over the next 4 months with this bios, as the DDR3 and AM3 boards are coming out and I will like to get my hands on a good AM3 board along with some good DDR3 memory... maybe this board can prove me otherwise.
i didnt have problems with the m2r so far as well. since i reseated my watercooling on the board it flies again.. its just my cpu that isnt a golden one simply and i will leave it at the current 3,6ghz @ 1,3625v. Its cool and fast whatever..
i will stick to it until the am3 issues with 4 dimms are sorted out, or if it does not get sorted, i would consider am3 not before there is something new on the cpu side that would make it necessary (and a good dfi ut board of course ;) )
I'm about to take off the NB/Chipset/SB cooler and clean it off and apply a good film of thermal interface material to it as my NB temps are a bit warm - 48~51C, no stability issues but I do believe I could easily get better contact and cool them down a bit from all that I have read about these coolers.
I also saw B.E. post about the thermaltake NB cooler (http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Produc...C=1305&ID=1610)
has anyone else found anything that can replace this factory string of coolers that DFI has?
I love my DFI board, but I did have problem with the official BIOS... I think DFI really should release a official version, I don't mind using a BETA Bios, but it's not really professional on that part that we need to use BETA to be able to use the boards full potential?
