Amazing points, SAM.

Well done SAM, almost an 11 milion WCG points day. Thought you where quiting at 10 million....
You must have replaced that failed MSI 7970 video card...
Not yet. The remaining two cards seem to have almost compensated for the loss of their comrade :D
Nice work
That is a hearty piece of pie my friend
That's my first sliver in quite some time and my other card should arrive today:up:
That is interesting Sam. How many ATI GPU + CPU threads are you running now per 7970?
What are your count and nCPU settings in app_info file?
I am tracking the price of components of your rig and waiting for the right sale event(s) to acquire them. Likely post Holiday Seasons...

How are you guys letting me keep pie?
SAM, thank you for providing me you with your app_info set-up numbers, I will keep them on records for future use.
I was reading about your motherboard last night and discovered that:
1- When you use 3 X video cards you get a PCIe setup of 16 X 8 X8; and
2- When you use a 2 X video cards set up you get a PCIe setup of 16 X 16
This may explain why your present 2 video cards WU PPD almost matches what your 3 video cards WU PPD use to do.
Well done Pie munchers :yepp:
I lost some serious time last night, the new 7950 would not play nice as a second card in the 990x rig with the UD7 mobo, I ended up putting it as the second card in the 970 rig with the UD3 mobo. :shakes:
Yeah I see your 4.5 TB production over there
Movieman any news from TRN ? He is being missed here.
Excellent Results you guys...!
Bun-Bun - Are you now on a low carb diet..? no pie...? or is it just WIN 8 playing tricks on you?
Win 8 box is running now full bore. My top cruncher I swapped the GTX670 back in and put the 7950 in my dual opty rig. So about 12 hours of down time there. Plus looks like the dual opty rig is holding the 7950 back. Not sure what it is going to put out now.
Rest of my farm is offline. I can't keep up the electrical bill lol.
Haha yes. Just last night my GF was complaining it was cold in the house even though its 10c warmer outside now than it was a week ago. Those crunchers make a difference lol
Well I got my last bit. Looked at the estimate. Went and looked at the meter... it was four times the estimate.
I stopped the crunchers from getting new WU's that night lol
Sam,
Heads up, There appear to be an "Hypernova" nebula approaching your gravity field...!!!
Time to shut the gates to the field then http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/...4/chuckles.gif
Stellar fusion has stopped. No more Hydrogen Complex Chemicals available for the nuclear reactions. Cooling down :(

We're all going to need rehab soon :yepp:
Time to prepare our gear, cleaning filters, testing cooling fans, power supplies, clocks timing etc... for the next round of GPU tasks.
For what I understand it will be the last opportunity. We will have a 100 days worth of WU's. At our crunching rate and with some additional firepower it may be even less. After that there will be no more GPU crunching at WCG for a long time I suppose. There is no other project mentioned.
It reminds me a film title: There will be blood. :D
Hate to say I told you so! But lets hope they get some more work soon.
Sam,
There appears to be something wrong with today's XS pie picture. Like possibly three zero suffixes....!
After reviewing yesterday's team's production #s, it becomes quite apparent that our XS WCG points generation process is very dependent on ATI hcc WUs and GPU crunching. The glossary reductions in team production are approx 30% for team 2CH, 15% for IBM and 75% for team XS...
Sam, you just got to re-open that portal.... HyperNova is closing on you anyway...
With most of us using app_info it means those machines stopped crunching entirely. I know I haven't reset my two crunchers back to regular production.
And pie is up for grabs!
Correct. But if you had an app_info file with HCC and another project like GFAM or SN2S then you should have continued crunching. I did this with a few of my rigs, so they continued crunching. But doing it on all the rigs was too much work. Anyway high power fuel is flowing again.
Sam,
Mrs Miggins pie shop must have gotten plenty of pie filling ingredients. Today's XS pie looks a lot more juicier....!!!
Must be possible, as it's the second time it's happened.
Eta,
I see that you are ready to engage your computing WARP engines and join SAM in that very exclusive 1,000,000 PPD BOINC points club.
Excellent work...
You can view a picture of one of Sam's rig at post #3 of the "7xxx sexiness" thread http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...=1#post5151646 If you read on, Sam does provide a few more details about that particular rig.
Jean-Guy
Nice work, guys!
I moved the 3 7950's to one hex rig and added a new 7970, the numbers are still going up!
I am not in the club yet. But a few minutes ago my two new black holes two ASUS HD 7970 Direct CU II went into orbit. This should definitively allow the hyperspace jump over 1M Boinc points/day.
Thanks for the thread. Impressive machines. At the moment I have still one GPU board per CPU. I hesitate to do multiGPU yet. The fact that the CPU has to split itself among the two GPUs, I wonder if it does bring down the performances of the whole set.
Think one thread of your hex cores per GPU WU so a max of 12 per hex cpu..
Now put yourself in my shoes sitting here with a 32 thread machine with a MB that has the required 3xPCI-E X16 slots and no cards to try it.
Boggles my mind to think what this could do with 3-7970's running 32 GPU WU at once..

Sam was originally using 3 X 7970 cards on that rig with a 3930 CPU with 8 X ATI GPU WUs threads per card. One video card packed it in and he switched the two remaining card to a a new unknown config (likely 12 X ATI GPU WUs per card). Whatever he ended up settings gave him a PPD production that almost equaled that of the previous 3 video card setup. With a 3930 CPU and 2 HD 7970s doubling the CPU to 24 and running 12 ATI GPU WUs per card may just be that rig sweet spot. Each cpu likely as its own sweet spot depending on the two video card you team them with. likely applies to singleton video card setup as well. The rig that has your 3960 cpu in it might just be the one to experiment with.
Can't wait to see what them new ASUS HD 7970 Direct CU II will do for you.
Let me know what Pluto looks like when you warp by...!!!
Sam, I see that you are not laying back and letting a young Swiss lion's challenge go without a fighting response. Looks like you might be headed for a 2 million PPD BOINC points goal.
Eta, I forecast avalanches and melting snow caps in your vicinity.
Excellent work for both of you....
jeanguy2, unfortunately Pluto was a kind of very fuzzy oval distorted shape, and Charon was unvisible. Probably this is due to me passing Warp 1 speed too near Pluto. Now heading towards Proxima :)
I understand what your saying. Warp 1 Earth to Pluto 5H 28 mins. You were definitely moving. If proceeding to Proxima in the Alfa Centauri system suggest you increase speed to at least Warp 8 (1024 X c) for an estimated travel time of roughly 73.5 Hours. Warp 8 travel Earth to Pluto would have taken you 19 mins.
There must be like 50 days GPU processing left or 1'200 hours at present consumption rate.
Proxima is 6'724 time farther than Pluto. This means that at present speed I would need 36'757 hours to reach it before I run out of fuel. So I must increase my speed by 30 times. Now if I really do that and crunch 210 Million WCG points a day then the problem is that I would dry up the whole available fuel in less than two days. !
Proxima is too far. I change plan, lets go and visit the fabulous liquid Hydrogen fountains of Eris just twice the distance from Pluto. I will have time to wander in the Kuiper belt, around see the beautiful ice sculpted canyons of Haumea, and the fantastic caves with liquid helium lakes of Makemake
Eta,
Sure glad to see you are going to keep your speed down and leave a few HCC GPU WUs for the rest of the XS WCG team to crunch.
Happy trails.... Keep a long range sensor on for them unplotted asteroid fields.
Later on today I shall use NASA's long range scanners to view your wonderful destinations. :)
I always learn something new everytime Eta posts
I will leave my slice of the pie, for a few days. I am sure some of you will be happy to taste it. I am flying now with the blue angels, and then will be back.
I'm still kinda shocked that I'm actually getting a piece of pie. Might be short lived, but it sure is tasty. :)
If you are going to fly with the Blue Angels, try to get in with either the slot man or one of the solos. This will give you a better view of the formation work as well as a better situation awareness. Flying with one of the two solos would be best because you will get to see the formation work as well as their low level aerobatics. Flying inverted, 200 feet above the deck doing 500+ knots will get your hair on fire.
Wishing you a great rides. Whom ever you fly with remember to tell him when he asks what you would like to do: "I was born to turn and burn". Then hang on for the ride....!!!
I am estimating that it takes 3 GPUs to get into pie, am I right?
Good job all the way around!
Two OC 7970's on separate machines should do
Sam,
I just about to put in an MSI R7970 OC 1010Mhz on the system below to teplace the 6990. I have BOINC v7.0.36 and plan for AMD CAT 12.11 beta 4. What do you recommend for software & driver versions as well as the optimum number of ATI GPU threads to run...?
Thanks,
Jean-Guy
I'd run 16 threads with your software & driver & crank that clock up to 1125 :yepp:
Thanks for the inputs Eta & Sam. I will work my way up to 16 threads and an 1125 OC. I will use the AMD 5.11 beta 11, the AMD APP SDK and MSI Afterburner 2.25.
Eta, How was your flight(s) with the Blue Angels? Sure hope that you did not have to use the little white bag....
I forgot that about the clocks. My clocks are also up some to 1150. It depends on the manufacturers. You can go over but then I have long term stability issues wirrh freezing. Some GHZ editions are very good other pretty bad. Jeanguy2 you have to carry some tests on your particular board.
I have not tried more than 12 GPU threads or 1 CPU per 1 GPU. It means you must split the CPU with a ratio of 0.75 instead of 1.0.
With 12 GPU threads it did not give me the feeling that it was making a big difference over 10 GPU threads.
I will check this.
Sam & Eta,
Thanks again for your inputs for the r7970 settings. Just started mine on WCG ATI HCC. Now running it basic with 8 X (1 CPU + 0.125 ATI GPU). Video setting are stocks for video BIOS # 2 at 1010 / 1375 with an idle / loaded VRM of 0.806 / 1.146v to 1.158v. I will let it run like that until the next 00:00 UTC WCG update to insure I do not have errors or invalids. If OK, I will then raise the video core speed to your suggested 1125-1150 MHZ. Here is a couple questions for you guys: With your 7970 at a core of 1125 to 1150...
1- Did you have to increase the video voltage? If so by how much?
2- Have you down clocked the video memory speed? If so to what?
With BIOS 2 selected the stock H7970 efficiency compare to old 6990 overclocked at 950/1250 is quite significant. the average production timing for 8 concurrent ATI GPU WUs has decreased from an average of 14:10 with 6990 to 06:10 with 7970. Power drawn by system under load also decreased from 360W to 255W. GPU temps also reduced from 60-62 C to 50-53 C with a lower fan speed (60% now vice previous 85%). The comp room is so quiet....
Can't wait to see what the 7970 will do with an OC of 4.8 GHz CPU and 1125-1150 GPU...
Left both at stock :)
I have not touched my Bios. I used the Catalyst control center to overclock the GPU and Memory but did not touch the voltages. On some boards memory runs at 1550.
My CPUs 980X one 990X and one 3960X run at 4.0 and 4.2Ghz and compared to the 3.33 Ghz stock frequency it does make a visible difference. If you go at 4.8 then you will see also a difference but to be stable probably you have to play with voltages ? If I move the CPU at 4.8 without touching the voltages it won't work. I try to keep it simple so no voltages. But the DDR3 I make it run at 1800 or 2000 MHz.
Now I tested Sam's config with 16 CPU + 16 GPU threads. The result is much lower than running ten GPU threads and 12 CPU threads. Maybe Sam uses dual CPUs so he has in fact 24 CPU threads available. All my rigs are single CPU.
With 12 CPU and 10 GPU threads settings, my best HD7970 crunch a little over 1 Million WCG points a day, day after day. The average board does 850-920 thousand ppd.
In terms of validated results per day the best boards do 2'335 Validated WUs per day. The average boards do 2'046 WU per day. That is over 10% difference. But the top boards have much faster clocks already from stock, and I could even push them a little more.
As a comparison when running Sam's configuration I got 1'700-1'800 WU per day not a good result.
Good morning Eta,
Thanks for the above post. You have top of the line CPUs. Your data points out that for highest point and # of returns matching the actual # of CPU cores available is best. Some people say that they use the 16/16 config to get higher work time credit when chasing badges. My personal aim is to produce the greatest possible number of validated results. Points are a nice valid incentive but they are not the primary objective.
I just switched from stock settings to 10 X (0.8 CPUs + 0.1 ATI GPUs) which is 2 CPU threads geater than what my 2600K CPU provides for. I will run this for a couple days and then try the 8 X (1 CPU + 0.125 ATI GPUs) to compare results.
Have a great day, I am going to hit the rack for a while...
Jean-Guy
Not bad the idea of increasing runtime score by multiplying the threads. Frankly I did not much think about it as over sapphire there is not much competition really.
But I wait that WCG implements new badges over the two years runtime sapphire one, then maybe I will change my tactics.
No pie today?
Well, i'm not baking any pie for you gluttons, so here's a copy/paste.

Your pie baking factory didn't seem to be affected! :P

My aerobatic flight ended. Lost my plane.
I am back and very hungry. Hope some pie is left
Just got home to a very cold cave! Yep, another power outage  Looked to have been down for 4 hours. One Mb refusing to boot so far :shakes: Welcome back to Hyper & straight on the cherry I see. Good timing
