Removed IHS successfully! Results to follow...
I was getting tired of my ridiculous temps (80+ on load) so this weekend I worked up the nerve to pull off my IHS. I have tons of experience popping open AMD chips, but learned that Intel chips are "soldered" on (and by soldered, I mean they use an adhesive thermal paste that melts at or under 100C). Did some research and found a logical removal technique involving a stove and pan. However, as I was cutting through the black silicone, the IHS just popped off on its own accord (scaring the $hit out of me in the process). Upon inspection, the die appeared intact despite the fact that I didn't even apply any heat.
However, when I put the delidded CPU back in my mobo, I was unable to get sufficient pressure between the cpu and my HS to get it to post (scaring the $hit out of me once again - thought for sure it was a goner). Tonight I finally found a copper shim that has allowed me to get enough pressure to at least boot up. My temperatures are predictably awful (die -> TIM -> copper shim -> TIM -> HS), but I am relieved to know that the chip is indeed alive.
Early next week, I will be getting some water cooling gear in. Included in that gear will be a spring mountable backplate (that didn't come out right, but you know what I mean). At that point, I will be able to properly mount my HS and will be able to provide an apples to apples temperature comparison before and after IHS removal. I will then post some water cooled results sometime the following week.
So I guess the moral of this story is that a) the IHS can be successfully removed, but b) I don't have any real comparative info as of yet. Feel free to ask me if you have questions regardng IHS removal.
