Also - how hot do those NB inductors actually get? should I heat sink them or is it not really necessary?
I don't know mate but bitspower seem to have some trouble releasing those blocks.
A while ago they annouced their 780I nb/sb block but afaik it's still not available.
Vincent from bitspower said the first week of oct the block will be available, let's hope he's right.
Oh, and don't expect it to be cheap either, saw the asus 790i block listed at a shop here in the Netherlands for a whopping €109,-
Hi, I have a lil problem with my RE and Ati 4870 series cards.
Tried to install a set of 2x4870, later on 2x4870x2. Had to use the driver from cd since the newer one even doesn't recognize the cards.
But the main problem is, that the card in the first pci-e slot is constantly overheating (idle temps 85°c), the second card is bout 54°c.
Makes no difference if I take one or two 4870/x2 cards, the one close to nb is always overheating...
Anyone an idea what the problem is?
No problem.
Idleing at 80C+ is a speciality of HD48XX series cards. The fact that the one closer to the NB is hotter is because it does most of the work, and that when you first enter Windows, the clocks are not in an idle state, you need to run something 3D, and exit before it will drop down, and run a little cooler while idle.
However even at load the main card shouldn't go much above 90C. If you are worried try playing with the fan profile, search for it in the forums, lots of threads on the subject.
Or of course you can watercool them... :D
well sure, the first one is the main one.
so, the trick is to run 3d to get it to idle afterwards? cause the card was always that hot @ startup.
sure, i want to watercool em since there are 2 loops for graphics :D but i thought it is a bug due to mb ^^
on the other hand, kinda strange that the 8.8 catalyst didn't recognize the cards...
i guess this is due to mb/gpu combination since my friend hasn't such a bug.
well then, gonna reorder 2 atis and 2 ek blocks :D
ty for info :)
Seems like this board dont like 500fsb on quads, 485fsb working for me but after that i get troubles. Using 0501bios right now. Maybe planning to back to dual core :)
cheers for the cooling mod example eternal_fantasy. Really helpful. I was able to pull it up on screen in the shop to show them what bits I needed.
took off the heatsink last night, same as others regards thermal paste application. A bit stingy and sloppy with the paste aren't they?
Got 2 thermal right HR-90S Types 2s on the mosfets, copper ramsinks on the southbridge and the other chips, and a MCW-30 on the northbridge. NB has dropped from 50c down to 35c. A bit more like it:D

Yep, got to try and figure that out. I've had 495 out of my QX on the EVGA 790i, will have to do some tinkering. maybe a lot of tinkering. Didn't like 0501 have gone back to the supplied bios 0204 I think it is.Quote:

ATI 8.9 catalyst drivers have been out for a week now might want to try those. my 4870 idled at between 76c and 80c before i water cooled it. So if your worried about that High temp it is normal for these cards. Water cooling is the way to go unless you want to listen to loud fan noise at least on mine when i went over 40% on the fan it got loud. Take it up to 100% and you will need ear plugs
Anyone found or know of bad combinations of Performance level (tRd) and memory latencies: I have POST problems using PL6/cl8/1:2 - I can't POST above 425fsb with PL6/8-8-8-24 but can POST with PL6/7-7-7-20.
My 2x1GB OCZ3P18002GK is stable up to 440fsb and 1:2 with PL6/7-7-7-20, but I don't think it will go any further @ cl7.
there is an equation Kris Broughton figured out for tRD capabilities. at certain FSBs with certain CLs, tRDs of a certain value are only allowed. the article is on AnandTech.com...and thanks to google advanced search, here it is. should explain what you are finding...

i finished the work i needed to do this morning so i decided to have some fun with hardware laying around. i had this card volt modded and insulated a few days ago so i figured i would see what it would do. CPU was just on a Chilly single stage...i spent damn near 8 hours working this setup over. had issues clocking the cards past 800MHz with RivaTuner so i switched to BIOS flashes to get the clocks up. it was a fun little afternoon and a nice change of pace from clocking LN2 drinking modern cards...nothing like pouring a bit into the pot then starting 05 and going to make a sandwich while it finished :D

insulation held up very well as i benched about 4 times longer than i thought i was going to be. but the setup kept running so i kept squeezing more points. temps according to RivaTuner on the card remained between -30C during screenshots to -70C for benching, but most of the time bang on -50C. i didn't have a thermal probe in the pot so no idea what pot temps were.

just goes to show, you don't need high powered cards to have a good time. i have a stack of other little cards laying around that will likely all get their turn in this setup. i also figured out a solution to my bowing RE for this session so i am all ready to go back to LN2 on the E8600 soon
That's the idea 30h6. Nice one:up:

thanks 3o, it's an excellent article which I'm embarrassed to say I've read (and bookmarked) before. My only excuse is that I was still using a Commando when I last read through - and some of the drier stuff (like the tRD POST equation), I sort of skimmed over. :slap:
My new personal record with new E8400, on air..:)
640FSB and with 5:8 divider...memory clock at 2050Mhz:D

Well seems to be a problem with the RE, since my friends don't have this issue and such temps @ idle.
I went kinda crazy with this cards because I thought they do not work well on the RE since the fan of the primary card started like every 2-5seconds and it sounds like a plane starts. I know that they like it hot...but didn't thought that they get that hot @ idle.
So...gonna get 2 of em again and some waterblocks for em.
Btw how are ur watercooled temps?
