So whats the general consesus on the DFI 790FX M2RS?

I bought the board thinking it was the best one for OCing and good performance, but lacking in a few features that other boards have?

Personally, I think its OK and I do like the amount of bios options, however I find that..
-noisey pwms are annoying, but I can live with.
-Not as stable as I would like and I get the feeling that it doesnt like my RAM.
-Max stable OC ive got is ~3.0GHz which isnt as high as I was hoping for.
-NB runs at about 60 degrees ... far to hot for my liking!!!

I presume from what I have read is that the power system isnt brilliant and that the bios's aren't all that good am I right?

What about ABS is this useful at all?

I am not a hardcore OCer by any standard, however I have dabbled for the past ~10 years.

What I CAN say for the board, is that it survived 3 blown PSU's from a fncked GPU I borrowed off a mate and ran quad channel RAM. although one of these sticks blew and im unsure it were the boards fault, due to being a bit temperolmental with the ram generally.

i think its one of the best boards out there still, but the newer pII biosses are bit flaky it seems...

well thats good to know. altho does the power system between the m2r and m2rs make much of difference?

@Olli........Hey man I am not gonna be able to do much of anything for a few days I had a situation where I was forced into a Physical Confrontation with someone my size and about 6' 2" 300lbs so it got messy and I had no choice but to Beat the crap out of this guy and gain the upper ground on the situation very fast so my Right hand (Feels Broken) but its not so I will be gimped and out of the mix with Bios testing and what not until I regain the use of my Right hand. So what ever you can do as far as testing (Bios) with DMM Reading and what not juts post it up and send RGone the info as well to pass onto Taiwan

I'm currently having trouble setting up my 3rd card on my folding rig. No matter what program I use it doesn't show the 3rd card. I have 9800GX2's so its currently only showing 4 cores. I am using 12/26/2008 beta bios.

Well, there is an overclocking database here @extreme and according to the list, the higher stable clocks are limited to a lucky few, with most coming in the 3.6 to 3.8 stable, and there are a few DFI's on the list, with the M2R making a decent enough showing....

Here are my thoughts,

I have no problems with running 8 gigs of mems @the 1066 on the M2R, I have read posts that indicate running with 8 gigs of 1066 mems is hit and miss (reduced to PC6400 to run) with most current AMD boards with all slots populated, so it would be a krapshoot with a new board and I am asking myself if I really need/want to take a chance on maybe 100/200mhz more with the possibility that ram may become a problem.....plus, the only time I have problems with the PWM on the board is when I am tweaking and stressing, if I leave the rig alone @its present settings and don't try to tweak it up anymore, it games and performs without issue, which is all I want, well, except for that 4gig stable....

AMD just fudged a bit on the true headroom for air/water, and it is becoming very apparent now that the retail chips have been out for a few weeks that a more conservative top clock is in the 3.6/3.7 range, anything above that is bonus gravy for the person holding that particular piece of sillycon, so, with everything considered, the DFI's we are using (the M2R) is really a horse......I don't use the onboard NIC (maybe that issue has been fixed with the 1/21/09 beta?), so, really, I have pain free 3.8gig rig.....and right up there with some of the best clocks that have been reported on the small database so far....AMD did supply a chip that had lots of headroon compared to some of the most recent offerings......

The problem on the AMD front is the motherboard developement, again, as it has been for many many years, maybe someday that will get on track.....

It is what it is, clock on and have fun.....

The problems as far as I can see have been the Bios development with all makers and up til now the CPU's themselves. Now that AMD is drawing attention to their CPU's this issue with the BIOS will change with all Board Makers because it will be lucrative to invest the kind of time that should be put into RD because sales are being generated with the NEW chips and more chips sold mean more Motherboards required to run those chips.

yes but i dont know whether we will participate on the newer biosses, as DFI already decided it EOL before half a year.. I certainly do hope not and bios development will continue, but i'm not sure..

whats concerning the overclockability i'm pleased with stable clocks so far as well, but max overclock seems to be limited.. OK its of no real daily use but taken the PWM side the DFI should do much better then i have discovered especially using chilled water or even better cooling..

edit: lol, i enabled 16bit in the ht submenu for the first time and my systems runs much better. not oc wise (not tested) but lagwise when heavy gaming.. what does this do? why is auto not working?

EOL whatever! I really don't care what they do as long as they Issue 1 Solid /Stable Bios that has the Bios Voltage Tables Accurate and functioning without issue and all of the other half assed Previous work corrected and this Boartd functioning the way its is supposed to without fear of Damage to hardware because Bios are done half ass'ed and shotty workmanship put into this ongoing mess.

I am sure D.F.I does not like when I vocalize my point of view about this but O'h well ......... I am only telling the truth whats going on and has been going on for over a year now.

I'm with you guys now and I have read this entire thread , AGAIN. LOL. I was out of it for a while, and now I"m up to speed. I have my phenom II 940 installed and should have my desktop running in another day, she C1'd on me so I gotta clear everything out and such.

I do have a Fluke 87 DMM, a good watercooling kit, I'm not he greatest overclocker nor greatest knowledgeable person but if you help me out I can try & would love to aid this board and its development and standing on XS.

another screwy sequence with the 1/16 beta for the M2R just happened this AM....decided I wanted to make a trip to the bios and change a mems setting after checking my emails, when I did a restart and del, the system froze, WTF???? After several attempts to reboot, and facing weird characters at first boot page (and me thinking the bios is hosed), and also not seeing my Sata DVD recorder, I finally got her to reboot, did the change, still had the previously mentioned DVD missing at first boot and also in Winders, shut down, unhooked power, discharged PS, checked all connections on the drives as I have been tinkering with the innards, refired................

and everything is back to normal.....

maybe I have a defective board, I don't know....this is the first time this problem has surfaced, and the only things that have been changed are the processor and the bios.....there is a remote possiblility the CD/DVD recorder might be the culprit I guess since it was the item missing at first boot this AM...

taking bets on which one is suspect....smart money is on the bios or CD/DVD, or??????...this is beginning to feel like a chemistry experiment, it is not the temps, they are very low.....

i'd say unplug the dvd and try... is it SATA? the sb600 has issues with sata optical drives as to my knowledge..

this is an interesting bit of informations, yes, it is Sata, I had problems with it hooked to the Sillycon image Sata ports, rearranged to get it on the native ports, now it does this......the recorder has had some screwy behavior before, but I have never had a failure during burning, and it was an open box from the EGG, hmmm

I have a PCI-e IDE card, guess it is time to add it into the mix as I am already running with and IDE HD and regular CD/DVD all in one recorder on the single native IDE port, I just can't part with the ide HD, it is my download heaven and is used to store data for reinsertion after a fresh OS load and reconfig....

now I am bummed even more, what little quirk is next, jeesh.....................

I too have seen that happen before with my SATA dvd.
I could not figure out what the cause was.
Seems to have gone away,haven't had it happen in awhile.
Only thing I have done different is not use CMOS reloaded.
Drive would also disconnect in windows too.
Didn't matter if it was on "sillycon" or amd controller.


And I too have had a weird experience with the new beta 1/21.
Got my highest OC with it....but next morning wouldn't even run prime or occt for 10 minutes.:shrug:

Do you notice much of a perf benifit from having 8gig compared to 4?

I don't know, it can't hurt, but it does limit the ultimate upper CPU clockage, and with the Adata stuffs good to about 1120 with all four in da rig if I decide to run up the HTT..... I do like having the mems in the rig when gaming.....more memory is always good in that respect....

I am not sold on 1066 runnings, I got better read, write and copy scores running pc6400 and tighter timings with the same modules.....

And, I assume that with DDR3 the latencies will be relaxed even more.....

Well I got my D.F.I LanParty JR 790GX and my other 940 BE which I was running all day yesterday in the 790GX on the Bench Really Nice (Little Board):)
took the New Phenom 940 BE out of Bench top set up and installed in the 790FX-M2R and like we have stated Olli this is the better board;)

Running 3.6ghz NB@2.6 same voltage as last 940 BE but 100mhz grander on CPU Clock:clap:


@...Olli...Please see if one of your LAN Ports come up disabled in Windows......Its on in Bios 1/21/2009 "Beta" But no where to be found in Network connections or device manager in XP32 ..........(Sigh):down:

have not checked status in Vista Yet but no worries I have a TRI-OS Multi Boot Environment ...XP32 Vista 32 ...Windows 7 64.... so I am covered as far as checking different O.S for Bugs with Bios............Also if its any consolation to you Olli we are not alone with quirky AMD Bios on 790FX-M2R the 790GX voltage tables are way out of whack much more so then our board:yepp:

and just a quick question... it may be silly, but what happend to the MAL (max async latency) bios option that was there with my 6400+BE X2... and now its not there with the Phenom II? is it managed somewhere else or has something else taken the place of it?

I have both LAN-Ports working in Vista 64. No problems so far. Internet and everything is available when i plug from LAN 1 into LAN2...

And Campbell did i get it right, the CPU does not do more overclock or anything on the JR790GX?

Yes so far it appears SB750 is a Trumped up lie in order to sell more motherboards. Could also bee I am a Noob at overclocking this board too:D.....But I really don't reckon the latter of the 2 is the issue.

As I suspected when I was doing research the other day on 'uber clockage' and musing as to whether a 750 chipset would make a difference, although there are 'leaders' in the MB game, it seems the M2R is right up there with the best.....however, all good things have caveats, the sb600 issues and Sata CDrom's, PWM considerations amoung other things.....maybe the sb750 handles some of these issues, but from what I am reading, every AMD MB manu is working with chipsets that are lightyears behind Intel offerings, so it stands to reason more developement is going into the Intel side.....

You keep harping on the bios issues, it could very well be that no matter what they come up with the overall design is just not fixable......especially when pushing the limits, 98% of all users don't even know how to open a case, we are a very small smidgen of the computing community.....

Thanks for taking the time to compare, I had already made up my mind to sit and wait on the MB.....
