I hate to say it, but you said the place is around 100 miles from you.
After sending the board to them a SECOND time, and them telling you this, My arse would have been in the car paying them a visit.
Good luck with the RMA though, a screwup like this, is hard for both you and the company. 1, you can't prove it wasn't broken before ya bought it, 2, DFI can't prove there was a mistake on their end.....appearently........
Hopefully they will RMA it, no matter what happened at this point, as this would make a rather large impression on how browsers of these forums look at DFI. ;) :D
Umm, the CPU socket has been removed and is taped to the RAM slots.
DEFINATELY call them and let them know what happened. Thats pathetic!

that being said i think frys has just put a return back up on the shelf from another customer who has screwed with the board and you've bought it unknowingly

Im sorry but this was def not a DFI ram in my opinion, Angry is a decent guy, ill personally send him a message right now linking him to this topic and see what he has to say about that, and DFI's image..
when i got a dfi rma last year my mobo came back with the corner bent and the spdif not working - and now I'm going to rma it becauseits became unstable thir playing up about accepting the rma - denying it online and asking for pictures of the board. Certainly not an easy rma process to go through, making me think about counting my losses and just buying another (non dfi) board just so that i can run a computer without all the worries.
hmm, Red Sky's Ultra D just fryed 2 DVDRWs... Dfi won't refund him for the drives.
Best motherboard performance=dfi...but whish they had even 'decent' customer service.

Sorry guys but sometimes it really amazes me how things can get blown out of proportion thru misunderstanding. If the CPU socket is contaminated for whatever reason the warranty is voided on the MB. Why? because someone made an active decision to use di-electric grease some where along the way. It didn't just appear in the socket by magic. The method by which the board was returned with the "return" sticker on the fan and the CPU socket cover removed is standard practice in these cases. Thru this method the customer can clearly see why it has been returned without servicing. Before anyone cries "OMG how can DFI do this?" I can tell you that this is common practice amongst motherboard makers. How do I know this? because this is the 3rd MB maker I have worked for and the policy is the same in all cases. Remember, in most cases boards are returned to the distributor rather than directly to the manufacturer. This means that "RMA person X" at "Distributor X" receives the board and in most cases doesn't give it a second glance and returns it to the MB maker (Most RMA receivers at Distributors have "0" tech skills). At that point Distributor-X will often supply you with a replacement so that you can go on your way and get back to computing. If one of these boards happens to be "contaminated" then it will be rejected by the MB makers repair dept. At which point it simply becomes an issue between the MB maker and Distributor-X that you never hear about. You have your board and as far as your concerned the case is closed. It's not like Distributor-X will then send a repo man over to your house to "collect" your new board.
What has happened here is that the poster has either returned the board to DFI directly or his distributor has simply passed the board back to him as they received it from us. In either case the poster is the legal owner of the product and is held responsible for it. CPU socket contaminated, warranty voided. No mystery.
However DFI (and any other MB maker for that matter) are fully aware that the enthousiasts who use our boards do "all sorts of things to them", and we tend to cut people a bit of slack as long as the "things done" are not to severe. Also the poster claims that he didn't contaminate the socket, and with all due respect to the poster that could be a bold-faced lie or it might not be. Will we ever know for sure. Obviously not. So with these things in mind we are left with a tricky situation.
-Fact 1: Customer claims innocence.
-Fact 2: CPU socket is contaminated.
-Fact 3: Someone did it as "Computer Gremlins" are not real.
-Fact 4: DFI is aware of the fact that enthousiasts do all kinds of things
to our Lan Party boards and will try and cut you slack when
possible.
With these things in mind you can see that my collegue is trying to help the poster by allowing him to clean up the board first.
To the poster:
Obtain Isoprophyl alchohol in aerosol form and spray it into the socket and let the grease liquify. Isolate the CPU socket from the rest of the board with a "cone" of paper or similiar material. Blow compressed air into the socket and it should blow the liquified grease free. Don't touch the pins as if you bend any of them you will be back to square one. It might get it all or it might not, but it is your best chance.
It is important that all know that our leniancy on this matter not be confused with the notion that we can be "pressured" into giving service where it is not legally required.
Moral of the story:
Even thou most distri's might shoot me for this, you can use their lack of ability to check IT products to your advantage. If they give you an exchange on the spot then you are in the clear. Let them sort out any resulting issues with the hardware maker. Using direct factory service has it's advantages and disadvantages. The main advantages are that service is quicker and you have direct access to the techs who know how the things work. The disadvantages are that your product will checked by the same certified tech and you could get "busted" for doing something you shouldn't have. In the case of motherboards a distributor is not authorized or certified to make any binding judgement as to the technical fitness of the product. Only the maker is. This is why we all hear varying stories of service lvls from different companies. How many times have we all read that Customer-X got "great service" from Company-X, while Customer-Z gets "horrible service" from Company-X. It can be seen that the variables involved in providing service on IT products are large and often more complicated than people realize.
It is not the intention to offend anyone with this, but just set the record straight.

Dfi should have rmad the board, and im reconsidering my puchases now, as this
happened, and you guys should have rmad it asap, considering he is innocent, and in any way, you should be responsible for it. I personally went ahead and got :banana::banana::banana::banana:ty service from dfi, and they shoulod be a bit nicer about things. This board was shipped out to the wrong person, and should be taken back no problem.
join, be aware that for DFI, they got a board that had grease in it. a computer enthusiast said he did not put grease in - for all they know he DID put grease in and is lying. So that part of their service is understandable.Quote:
