I realy think i have a crapy core or something.
Heavy games like Q4 and HL2 LC just lock up in 2-10 min if i am using 1.25 of 1.225v. On my core. CS S runs great @ 1.25v And clockspeeds of 650-800 with 2.0v on the memmory.
So i think this core sux to hard. :

650 on the core with stock cooling is too much to ask, too much heat that is. Im sure with better cooling you will do 650/1.25v just fine.
astennu, i'm using basic zalman thats it, i don't rate it very highly, they could have made it far bigger but didn't and also i think the fan fin design is veyr inefficient as theres very little pressure on all the surface area along side the fan rather than underneath it. the open fan doesn't create much pressure downwards either and due to the fins getting so close together the area under the fan i think is fairly wasted. but its about as good as it gets for gpu cooling.
either way it probo does cool down other bits of the card far bette than stock cooler, power parts, mem so overall is worth it.
for quick fix solution taking of the top part of the sink that covers the fins and having a fan underneath, biggest fan you can get and blowing directly onto the card should improve your stability a lot.
apparently the xt cooler is much better, though personally i still think its got crappy fan/air flow design(i still think its better than the xl one), i don't see why manu's couldn't release versions with them on instead, probo cost a whole £5 more.
what's the opinion on cooling the ram of those x1800xl babies? do they need special
ram-cooling or don't they get warm at all and a fan blowing on them with no ramsinks
will do?
also can somebody take pics of the backside of the default xl-heatsink and of the pcb
around the core, well basically the area underneath the heatsink and pm them to me?

Can you remove the cover on the cooler and put a nice fan blowing over the whole thing ?

Anyone knows if the Maze4 RL block fits on the x1800's?
I am receiving mine next week and i am considering to buy either zalman VF700Cu or MAZE4 WC block.
The thing is I have just a BLACK ICE PRO 2 working with two water blocks, CPU's and chipset's (Swiftech storm and maze4) and its powered by a D4 pump. I think the temperature is gonna increase a lot!, isn't it?
I see the zalman is enought to Overclock the card, although its sounds too much i think (i had one with my 6800Ultra)
Any advise to overclock the XL? the card is form a spanish review, in that review they could overclock it at 575/1140 safely, they tried up to 628/1400 running the HDR demo (balls's one) but it wasn´t stable, they said maybe it was because of the power supply, considering they have similar problems with a GTO2 one also and with the 7800GT too. The power supply they used was the TAGAN 480W. I hope using my OCZ PowerStream 520W Active PFC (European version) i could mantain those 628/1400 stable, don´t you think?

The card is from sapphire, however it comes with the ATI logo on the heatstink.

I already got the Zalman VF700 CU on it + OCZ CU Ram sinks. But still no 1.25v for me i get lockups in almost all the games. I don't think its te cooling because temps are like 65c stressed. Mush lower than the Stock cooler did.
There is a 2e guy in holland that has the same problem his max is also 1.2v only he can run fear @ 650 MHz core on 1.2v i can only get 590 Max. Realy crappy oc. I find it odd that thems are not even 60c end the card almost instantly locks up when i use 1.3v. Verry stange. May be a new bios will help ? like a X1800 XT 256MB bios ?

XT speeds on stock volts, no, but do remember the XL's default voltage is 1.05V and the XTs default is 1.3v, the cover can be removed if you have a small enough screwdriver and im using this application here........... http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/89

Yup, I RMA'ed mine ATITool found loads of artifacts at stock speeds with stock cooler even tho games etc were fine, so I sent it back, but it looks like an ATITool bug now, oh well hopefully I'll get it back soon. But mine did 625Mhz core on about 1.2 volts. didnt push the mem too much, but it was happy enough in the 690MHz region on stock volts, might need to go up 1 notch to hit 700MHz.
less than stock even. XT works at 1.3v core and 2.0 mems. See my sig for my XL. And to think I almost didnt get one because some genuises were saying faulty cores... :rolleyes:Quote:

i have a 80mm lying around, how exactly do I do this?
Unscrew the top plate and either screw into the stock heatsink, or wire tie the 80MM fan above the X1800XL cooler.

Read through the thread - some of us mounted a stock AMD 70mm fan, dropp load temps like 20 deg c from 78 to 58. It made a huge difference and was quiet.

ditto my friend. I would be in HEAVEN If I got a good clocking card with some decent cooling. The average seems to be about 625/1400 or so which to me is just dandy over my current card.
