the only thing i can figure is that the heatsink is not making good even contact with the gpu. adding more thermal compound is not always the solution. i am not familer with the gt as i have a gtx, but make sure that you thighten the screws down evenly in a criss cross pattern if possible. i hop[e that is useful info, wish i could be of more help. good luck and i hope you get it sorted.
I tried this briefly before I went to water...no gain for me (water didn't gain anything either, actually). I really need a vmod but my soldering skillz are teh suck. Load temps did lower though, OC didn't gain though (my card runs cool to the touch with 42C load when both cores on my X2 are loaded as well at 525/1485--go figure).

Will the guarantee be voided by removing the plastic cover?
Technically, yes. But I don't think a single company will be able to tell or even care if the damn cover was removed. If they somehow do find out and ask you about it, say it was to clean out dust (make sure you do clean out whatever dust you might already have so that you don't lie!!!!)
hmm...sounds totally appropiate to remove it for dust cleaning ;)
they cant expect us to send in the gfx-card for dust removal anyways :p
Pretty sure it's because those thermal pads on the ram that it's not making good contact. I guess I have to rip it off again. :(

I tried it and got nothing but a minute more of stability before artifacting in HL2.
Current clock is 477/1350 and I tried 499/1350 and it didn't work :( :( :(
Neither did boosting the memory clock... I'm jealous of you guys getting 515+ .... One guy here talked about a bios modded to increase voltage... what's that about??
I'm too wary to try the hardware volt mod people are talking about here

Sorry Frackal, But my 7800GTX can go up to 500/1350 with stock cooling no volt mod.
nice mod, but it's not so inventive.
some have already did that with a arctic silencer on their gf3 ;)

Ran a round of 3dmark05, load temp was around 60c (from 80c). around 20c is really good :D
One strange thing occured though, I went from around 7200 points to 7689 points! wtf?
I guess the high temps before the mod must have done some thermal throttling or something ?

Sweet mod I put a 92mm fan on my XFX 490/1300 Stock and I usally got 8600 in 3DMark05 with stock clocks I overclocked it to 516/1400 and got this :D.
