im not saying it wont beat any cpu here, it just doesnt make any sense why ATi would do such a thing, why would somebody put the quicker chiup where it doesnt matter?

Napoleonic, I see that you havent been here that long ;) The max rumored rating of the Sony Cell is equivalent to a 4.5ghz. And you would kindly go to the top of the Xtreme OC thread you'll see a 925XE at 7.2Ghz :D

The PS3 may well have the most advanced and fastest mainstream consumer processor, but not "here..." :D

ATI has confirmed they are releasing a 512mb card this weekend. This is probably it.

they went from 9700/9700pro -> 9800/9800pro, then added 9800xt...

then they announced the x800xt at the same time as the x800pro(as opposed to the x800pro being top dog for a while, like the 9800pro was), then added the x850xt...

now, they're coming out with the x950xt at the same time as the x900xt... or so it seems.

I think he's saying that because the X850 was an intermediate that it would be strange for them to release the X950 when they havn't released an X900 yet.

What Pikard is saying is that ATI is realeasing the X900 at the same time as the X950XT just like the 9800XT was there when the 9800 PRO came out. So dont be surprised to see it running cos its gonna be part of their initial launch line-up, unlike the X850. They're just not gonna do the waiting game this time until the R580 lol.

ummm, no it wasnt... what im saying, is that ATI seems to keep stepping up which chip suffix is the top dog at release...

in the 9800 generation, it was the "pro", then Xt came later.

in the x800 generation, it was "xt(pe)", then x850 came later

in hte x900 generation, its the x950, and "---" will come later.

yeah I don't see why they do that. First it's 7500, then 8500 (ok this seems normal) then 9700 (still makes sense because they wanted to have more lowend and midrange cards, so the high end card dosn't make sense as having a 5 digit, this also gives them room for the refresh period x8xx, and maybe a x9xx if it calls for it).

Then they started with the x800, why I dunno. They obviously ran out of digits or there wouldn't be an xx5x. I think they should have stuck with the type of scheme they used in the 9700-9800 generation that seemed to make the most sense to me.

Sorry if this isn't even along the lines of what you were dicussing, but I think it was lol.

thats not what i'm saying...

then the 9800pro series 1st came out... there were 2 cards.

the 9800 128mb, and the 9800pro 128mb. then came the 256mb version(s). THEN came the 9800XT.

with the x800 series, they released... at minimum, 3 cards at the start, and pretty much everything had just 256mb of ram. (who knows that mutant 128mb versions might be floating around). i'm just saying, with the 9800 generation, they had the XT suffix as being the top dog, at the END of its reign. with the x800, they figured, "ok, we might as well keep the XT as the best... and just have 3 versions".

but now they have the XX50 deal... which means basicly, they have crapload of names to fill in with the x900 series, and i honestly wouldnt be surprised if a x950(insert random letters here) came out as the same time as an x900(insert the same... or other random letters).

i'm not saying they WILL skip the XTPE, caus who knows... :stick:

well... er.. the SE would go at the top (as it's worse), and you might wanna have a space between the X900 and X950 series, or have the x950pro right below the x900pro, since thats where it will fit in preformance wise. (and probably pricewise too).

how do you expect most to remember all this? what if someones choosing between an x900xt vs. an x950se or something? Maybe ati is gonna reserve the x900 line for midrange variants like they did with their x700 line.

Why can't they just give it a straight number, like:

x900
x910
x920
x940
x950
x960

That would be much smarter marketing wise. How can a person decide what to buy if they don't know wtf the name means? If the release a new version they can just do something like x955. I hate ATI's scheme. Nvidia isn't supurb either, but it's not as bad.

lol, I think they do it to confuse people, I mean... really there isn't much reason imo. But if you see a x950xtpe being the best and it's 700$ then you see a x950se for 200$ (and your joe smoe) your like 'oh wow, I have found a good deal, I can get an x950 for only 200$

hmm, thats pretty much how intel has theirs setup. it would make sense, but it would also require a complete turnaround... though, intel did it, maybe ati should follow suit. ;)

So there is no way youre gonna get a 12-pipe (assuming X9xx has 24) for $200 cos the current x700 256mb are usually higher. Think more like $400 for the X950SE or X900SE.

well... the x800 is suposed to go for $200... so that means the x950se will be for about $300, i would think... but i also think he was just creating an example of how confusing it can be to look at all the different choices. ;)
