i am an owner of brand new 9800XT
so i took off the heatsink to discover:
a. they use paste! alright !! :)
b. the heatsink has an area raised up just a little bit so it makes better contact with the die.
c. the printing on the chips state that i have a R360, stepping 0343
here are the numbers:
R360
215R9RBKA11F
N03694.00
0343AA
TAIWAN
:slobber: :toast:  :p:
so this must mean, all they are are just 9800xt with a new bios and heatsink slapped on! awesome:D
Yes it is a 9800xt core this one!
Nearley the same orinting on mine core to!
results please
thanks for clearing that up.. i was starting to get worried ;) - funny thing that they used different sets of ram on front and back - or to put it better - that they used different dates for the front and backside. would've thought it's either all one week or all different weeks and not front week x and back week y.Quote:

oh well..
i ran atitool 0.17 testing for max core and ram.
max core was 420, max ram was 399.60 - just combined wouldn't fly.. strange tool that is ;)
yup. and i'm really interested in '03 results - regarding clock rates. what's the max you can run 3d2k3 without errors of any sort, either artifacting or others.Quote:

watch out sky, the heatsink lies directly on the die
if the heatsink is a seesaw, the die is the fulcrum
that raised area sticks up a little bit too much
tell me if your hsf wobbles a little bit
running 3dmark03 with 9800 xt bios :)
over drive works!!

i am placing exactly where i ought too
sweet!!!
thanks for the heads-up. i'll check the heatsink on mine tomorrow - flashing her will also be done tomorrow. btw which bios did you flash? ati 9800xt.256.Hynix.25.bin? seems the most promising to me as the other ati-bios' are for samsung ram.
hm my '03-score improved to 5524 @408/365 (still pro bios) using my work rig - see list of items on page 3. and i'm hot as hell wanting to see overdrive working and that tempmonitoring stuff :D. the heatsink on the core does get quite warm pushing the clocks upwards.
what improvement in clocks did you get after flashing the xt-bios? should be noticeable i think. most reports are in the +20 range regarding core speeds.
@shidokanjohn
whoops almost missed to reply to your question. to be honest, i've not heard of any xt using more than 8 chips, so i think it isn't all that likely to find a 16x16 card being a downgraded or speedbinned xt. i've seen a few shots of 256mb 98pros with more than 8 chips back when the 98pro was released, but did loose track of them after that and as i said, i haven't seen an xt-type card with that many ramchips either.
yah that is the correct bios i used
my max overclock with atitool, and with out artifacts was around 407 on the core, not sure on the memory maybe >375ish.
now it seems max oc on the core is 416ish
yah, low clocks eh?
its the hsf, its POS the finish on mine is crap. It sucks at getting rid of heat. I think that is what my problem is. The front is shiny though.
Im pretty sure that That is the Heatsink that is put on all oem systembuild 9800pros,xts because i got a dell pulled 9800pro and yes it is a PRO, and it came with that heatsink, i swapped it for my watercooling did some Vmods (vgpu,Vddr) and now this puppy flies 500core:400mem. I hope the relabled xt i just purchased can beat that, it better be able to if i vmod it, has anyone tried anything but the stock cooler and has anyone used ramsinks?
whats a stock 9800xt usually oc to?

what is the average overclock with some vmods and better cooling, like watercooling.
I'm really thinking about this as I have a chance to swap out my 465/380 vmodded 9800Pro for this for free. But I have to decide in 2 days.
A few questions:
1. Is it just about a sure thing I can flash it to a true XT?
2. Will the 256MB of memory help me at all in 3dmark?
3. Will this core do better than my 9800Pro already @ 465MHz
4. Are the vmods for this exactly like the 9800XT?
I really want to see some vmodding results and a photo of it without the HSF as I'd be able to see if my Alpha I've made for my 9800Pro will fit or not.
Wow...I really hope this card naturally goes +460 core.
Hollywood, I can't speak for everybody but I can tell you my card is a 9800 XT through and through. Its been on for about 8 hours, numerous benchmarks since I flashed the XT bios on it. Right now its @ 438 and @ 391.
This is no different from a 9800 XT card you could buy.
keeping it cold is the only problem i have

Could you please link me to the BIOS??? As I'll purchase the card if I know I have a solid BIOS.Quote:

i dunno, where bob got his bios. here is where i got the one bobdole and i have been talking about earlier - ati 9800xt hynix-25. it's pretty much at the bottom of that list, right above the last divider - i think it was the 10th from the bottom up...Quote:

regarding your questions
1) well nothing but death in life is 100% sure, but so far i've only seen ppl get 256mb (ddr2) 9800pros that have this exact same xt-layout, posted here a couple of times. just remember so far i only know of sapphire cards to be like this - don't know about other brands. and if it is this layout and you remove the heatsink and find a r360 core - then you know you should be able to flash the xt-bios (99.99%) ;)
2) 256mb might not be a big help in 3d2k1, and maybe even in 3d2k3, but it should at least give you some more ressources for games to fall back on.
3) dunno, slightly different core than a real 9800pro, with vmods i guess it should be possible - no garantuee, of course
4) they should be, as it is a 9800 xt card, same layout, same core, same ram - so i don't see why not :D
http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/bios/AT...56.Hynix25.bin
that is the one i used
flashrom:http://www.ocfaq.com/softmod/bios/flashrom217.zip
bootdisk:http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
the command i used was:
A:\flashrom -p -f 0 biosname.bin
-p tells flashrom to write bios
-f forces flashrom to write the bios, thus changing the ASIC ID to a 9800 XT
the zero is the device number
also, remember this is in dos so you won't have long filenames, they'll be truncated and look like ati.9~1.bin or something like that
Cards arriving in the morning... Ill have results up tomorrow night.
i cant wait to see someone supercool, or atleast watercool one of these. hopefully my card arrives soon.
could all of u that got a downgradet 9800xt please post a direct link to the cart they bourgt.
dont wana buy the wronge cart :(
Thanks for the reply Sky and Bobdole...I'm really considering this one...:D
It sounds like you guys got winners. Anyone try 3d03 vs a pro same clock rate. As far as volt mods, I'd probably use the mods for the XT considering the cards have the XT pcb. I imagine the overclock would be variable, just like any XT.
My card will hopefully arrive tonight, otherwise will be here by Friday. I'll be watercooling and flashing to XT right away, and will get benches up as soon as possible. One thing - I wont be able to OC the memory until I get some ramsinks made...but the core is going to receive some punishment :D
yea that's a good way of going at it. yesterday night i had my little missus run the atitool to find the highest gpu and ram speeds without artifacts. i had the tool start at 200/200 for both and let it work. the core went to 420/200 in about 25mins of testing including heatup phases built into that tool. same for the ram - that test went to 200/399 in a little less time. i locked the core at 200 when testing the ram and vice versa - so clocking one wouldn't interfere with the other (that's where this 200/399 etc are coming from, in case somebody wonders :) )Quote:

and in that whole hour i didn't check for temperatures on my card. i only touched the hs and the rams once, some minutes after a short bench in '03 with 389/347 and even then you could feel the heat the core and rams had generated during the test. and as the rams are completely on their own putting some heatsinks on those is a must for higher clocks. so atm i'm dicing around flashing the xt-bios straight, or first lowering the xt-bios default clocks and then flash it to keep the card a happy camper until i finally watercool it (whenever my damn custom holddowns arrive grrr).
