3770k IHS Removals - CPU temp dropped from 79C to 71C

I decided to void the warranty
removed the IHS

applied only Gelid GC Extreme ride and soon after ran Linx and dropped 8 º C warmer in the core.
now is wait a few days and try another thermal paste.

Now anyone who has already taken the IHS and applied MX4 what differences?

I am jealous damnit. I cannot get any kind of knife between the IHS and PCB. The gap is so small not even a hair or needle is thin enough....

Use a X-acto knife suck as this

Make sure the edge of the blade ( not the blade it self ) is flat on the PCB an then push towards the center of the CPU from one of the corners. Try all corners 1st because there are some that are easyer then others, once you get one done you know what to expect from the others :)

Completely new to these forums. Bit of a regular at bit tech forums from over the pond :)

I am planning to do this when my 3770 arrives on Tuesday. Any tips?

I'm also going to lap the spreader on both sides which I have done before so not worried. Also, I want to stick the ihs back down when I am satisfied. Is thermal glue suitable or is that conductive and ill end up borking it?

I tried (even with a very thin scalpel), but at 2 corners I can not even get the edge of the knife between the PCB and IHS, they are touching without even a hair of space between. The other corners are not much better :(
I think I might have a strange CPU or something because I checked my 2600K, Q9450 and E6600 and there I can get the knife in between just fine and if could probably delid them easily if they were not soldered.
I will try with some more aggression later :rolleyes:

There is no way anything can get between that, not even my very thin scalpel.

A razor blade would be thinner than your 'scalpel' no?


That's not really a scalpel? I have a dodgy knee that needs looking at

Have in mind that this is a very close up picture, so the blade look bigger than it is. And that is a professional scalpel, but I damaged the blade trying to delid this mother:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::ban ana:.

And I have a knife exactly like the one in PcCI2iminal's youtube video, but that is even thicker and less sharp. I think the space between the IHS and PCB on my CPU is less then 1/5 mm and at most points the IHS touches the PCB. Is that normal? It certainly is different than all my other CPU's.

It's a shame though, I could probably get 4.8Ghz stable for 24/7. But right now I get 95C at 4.7 1.29v.

I have the original HF supreme and am direct die cooling it without any issues.. removed the retention bracket and just placed the block evenly down and booted it up. cpu was taped down in place with some electrical tape. nothing special

everybody else succeeding without your scalpel should have been the first hint that your scalpel isnt thin enough

Use a razor blade, thin is about 0.1mm.

Has anyone gone about and lapped the IHS, removed it, applied good TIM and put it back on?

I'm curious as to what temp drops we can expect, except for direct-mounting.

If you gonna void your warranty you best take out the best of it -> Direct Die


As for my CPU I was able to pull another 100Mhz from it, at least.

Thanks all for the idea to use a razor blade. Last night I figured I needed something really thin and dismantled a razorhead like this:

Even with this I could not get between every corner, but after 2 hours of wiggling I was victorious.

Currently I am running Linx at 4.7Ghz 1.28v 67C (second hottest core is 61C) in comparison to 4.7Ghz at 1.29v 88C before using Coollaboratory Liquid Pro.
(Forgot to say to be fair that ambient is 5C lower than when I measured the 88C, so I got a ~15C improvement)

Did you removed IHS, replaced TIM and reused the IHS? or you left die "naked" with direct contact with HSF?
12'C is a lot, is Intel using the crappiest TIM they found?

Guess I will have to do the same as soon as both 3770K's arrive, will do some before/after tests.
Too bad the only HSFs I have to test are the stock Intel and a Corsair A70 I have lying around ... when I see the results I will have to decide if A70 is enough :P

I think so, I got 15C lower by replacing it with C Liquid Pro and MX4 and I just placed the IHS back, so maybe I could gain more by removing the IHS altogether. It looks like the TIM that I used to find on 5 year old motherboards.... very dry and a thick layer.

Did you stick the ihs back down? I've bought some arctic thermal glue to do the job after new tim and lapping but I want to know what others have done

I'm using direct die, and I'll keep doing so. To be honest can't find a reason not to.

My xp 3200 never complained.. Gonna see how I feel when it arrives tomorrow
