Well overclocking it gives you a free performance boost and most people don't keep a card 5 years or how ever long the service life could be, because by then it'd be way obsolete.
As for it causeing premature death if it's cooled adequately it shouldn't hurt it after all they are rated for something like 120 degree's celsius however at that temperature it'd start to die fast.
Well from what I've read so far...alot been keeping up on every ATI and Nvidia card thread. Putting it upto 35% fan speed or so is still pretty silent yet cools it to below 60 degrees celcius at load

i'd suggest to use different profiles. before creating a profile in the ccc make sure you save the default settings as a separate profile. after that create profiles for e.g. 35% fanspeed, 45%, 50% and/or 65%. i'm using the default settings (automatic) at idle and change the profile to 45% before starting a game. 45% are more than enough to keep the gpu at a decent temperature (as far as the ambient temp isn't that high).
what i did notice though, is that after a coldstart the fan is absolutely silent, but after playing a game and going back to windows the fan NEVER reaches these low noise levels again, even though the temps are back to normal and some hours have already passed since the game was closed. dunno what's up with that.
i really hope the default "automatic"-fanalgorithm and powerplay feature will be improved in the next catalyst release. it's also strange that the gpu clocks only go down to 500mhz at idle. they could have easily clocked it even lower to reduce the temps etc.

hmmm i dont know if im looking in the wrong place but there is only one .xml profile i see anywhere related to ATI and thats in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ATI\ACE not anywhere else
and it looks like this, nothing anywhere related to a fan :shrug:

i think the 2D clocks are high on these cards because ATI decided to handle that through the drivers instead of having it hard-coded into the BIOS. this is just a guess. but it will make them easier to change and fix things in the future? that's one of the reasons i'm waiting for the first official driver release before touching my BIOS on these cards.
