While that may be ironic, it is be a godsend. Server 2k8 seems to be a suitable replacement for XP x64 .... after 5+ years, and it will have DX10 and CFX support. I may have to try dual booting with it, and see how it is.
Anybody have any actual performance comparisons to XP yet? And 3dmark06 results on both OSes?
This is good news. I will be scoring Server 2008 pretty soon here (a legit copy).
Thanks Muffin for posting the image.
All I did was cut out whatever dinos22 posted, so it isn't the original.
64-bit 60 day free trial.

It's atleast just as snappy as XP imo.
I kinda like it, but it's not good enough to make me forget about XP64 just like that :D
Oh yeah, there doesn't seem to be a difference in frame rate in crysis between server08 x64 and xp64.. both run in dx9 mode.. perhaps i'll do some more detailed benching later.
I installed it.
Tips for anyone:
Download it from the Microsoft website. (Waste of 6 hours).
Core is just a command line, and does not include a UI. (Waste of 20 minutes to reinstall)
Make sure your password has a-z A-Z 0-9. (One of each)
Add Feature > Desktop Experience for Aero.
I have too many services running. I want to remove the server function all together. I might vLite the bad boy.
Look at the image again.
I find it interesting how this was posted, pretty much shooting down all these claims about Server/Workstation 08 being 20% faster than Vista out of the box and detailing how everything surfaced from the unfounded hype of the InformationWeekly article...which is exactly what everyone here is still going on about it having ignored the post.
They're the same OS, same kernel with different processes running with possibly different settings. Want a 20% improvement in Vista? Use vLite.
i don't know why ppl hate on vista it was a less buggy os than xp was after initial release. is a polished Vista aka 2k8 acceptable to ppl who hate vista?
in my personal tests, programs i used often loaded a bit faster in vista than in xp with superfetch and 4gb of ram, although this was just a 'feels' test it is really hard to know for sure. i'll try and find a review i read of app loading times in vista vs. xp
i would like to see some game, app loading etc. benches of a stripped down version of Vista with Sp1, 2k8 (i believe SP1 is integrated into 2k8) and XP.
I would LOVE a guide on what is good to be removed from Server sk8 using vLite!! I would have no idea what is acceptable to remove and what isn't.
Also, do we want the versions with or without hyper-v?
Here is kinda-guide on making it into a workstation OS:

Oh, does anybody know, if you use the 60 day trial version (with or without trial extension), and after the trial is over, do you need a brand new hard copy, or can you just buy the key and activate it?
How to extend the Windows Server 2008 evaluation period
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948472
basically when u get down to 1 day left, you can open an admin command prompt and type "slmgr -rearm" and reboot to get another 60 days
this can only be done 3 times for a max of 240 days trial
so...anyone wanna cook up a little guide on what to disable and how? :)
yes, you can just enter a valid key and activate
Strangely enough. I have not found enough benchmarks to backup this claim. I will wait if no one comes with something interesting. I will have to find out by myself.
Metroid.
I'm feeling the same, often when some1 claims something to perform a lot better etc. when testing myself in benchmarks and games etc the results were far from impressive. :p:
This 20% is most likely a special scenario but I'm willing to bet run typical benchmarks and you'll witness probably a complete different story. Vista SP1 scores 500 points lower in 3DMark06 compared to XP SP3 for example, I doubt Win 2k8 would be much better either.
I was really excited about this thread until I looked at the OP and realized what started it was someones blog. None of the test were specified and They didn't mention if the gain was against Vista sp1. When I first tried 2008 I noticed very quickly that file copy was much quicker and that sm2 and sm3 were higher in 3d06. I posted the 3d06 scores in the AMD section. That was against Vista before sp1. I suspect there's would be no difference between the two if both were configured the same and sp1 was installed.
Edit: Here you go. 2008 vs Vista. Vista on the left. I don't remember the card clock, around 891/1300 on a 3870. Cpu was a Opty 185 at 3.1. The sm2/sm3 scores in 2008 were the same I was getting in XP.
That's not... much?
what drivers are we supposed to use for this os?
use the Vista drivers
