I don't have this heatsink, but has anyone tried adding even a little more resistance, like say...2 coins? I don't know how easy it is to bend the x plate and I'm thinking it's really hard to bend, but has anyone at least tried? I'll be getting this for my q6600 and I know with my typhoon I did everything I could to make that plate bend down as much as possible to make it as tight as it possibly could on the cpu.
Also OT, which direction are you guys pointing your heatsinks with the fan? Like, when your case is upright, is the fan on the bottom, top, left, right?
i super-glued two 1/4" galvanized washers together...made two...then i used one 1/4' and a number 8 washer...super glued those together, matching the edges up on one side...i made two of those...the Ultra legs have different heights so the double stack 1/4" washers go under the two legs that has more gap and the lesser (gap) height legs get the 1/4 and #8 washer glued together....works very well for me...maybe a little tricky getting them into position before putting the screws in....definitely the board has to be out of the case to do it this way.
I used one of my Tuniq Tower 120 bracket and now, the U120X will NEVER move :p: ;)

might be the only draw back for me since using the tuniq mounting bracket puts pressure only on the center section...i rather get all four corners if i can but your alternative is still good!

Might consider a small cut of neoprene, aka an old mouse pad, and that should do the trick too.

Hey I just got My TRUE extreme, I was aware of possible looseness,
Man this one is without a washer, but It isnt loose at all, MY fingers were hurting doing the mount because the upperbracket was pretty tight and needed to push it down and screw it the same time:X. Only by force it would move but it is hella tight man, wihtout mod, maybe they changed the bracket abit?, I mean aftet those reading i see that guys can move the heatsink without even force. Well My temps improved dramaticly, 3.2ghz 1.3825 vcore @ bios were hitting max 58-60c range. with the TRUE 37-39c, really amazing:X and Now priming 8h+ 3.4ghz @ 1.4725 vcore. Temps peaking out @ 47c, mostly 44-45c, measured with coretemp, I did use btw MX-1 ( 1 line methode from AS5) and the Push-pull config.

I just lapped my TRUE tonight to flatten the base
and I'm looking forward to installing it whenever my
CPU gets here.
I'll have to figure out a way to stress-relieve the mounting
though if I want my motherboard/case to be
vertical though, just to be on the safe side for when the
rack gets bumped etc.
I'll probably use some copper strapping to hold the
fin-end up to the top of the case or something.
I'll also have to figure out how to add some fans to
cool the backside of the motherboard and the MOSFETS
near the CPU since the TRUE doesn't vent much air
downward to the MOSFET sinks.
Thnx synergy:), hey but I heared from XtremeTiramisu , He removed the plastic Film @ the backplate+ that black sqaure [] also , he said doing that it will let u tighten your screws more, and his doesnt move aswell. But I had my doubt doing it , altho i got the same mobo as his. Since I the metal is touching/ or almost touching the PCB of the mobo, So I ddint dare to do it:X, but If u need some more info u can ask him, he is nice and willing to help
hi guys, i just bought the TR 120 extreme and i've read through the thread about the "bracket gap" problems. my question is " if i were to use the single coin method; wouldn't the coin still have space to fall through the bracket & the heatsink itself?.... seeing as gravity would take over in computers upright position
what other simple methods could i use besides a piece of foam or cardboard?
Try without mods.... I just ordered mine yesterday and read few post above, it is hella tight fit man , no gab!!! and it would only move when u put force on it. And my temps are great! I think they improve it not sure tho .Quote:

once you mount that Ultra-X without any mod, you definitely need to not bump it, which in turn might twist it, with your hand or arm since that will disturb the bond that occurs with your thermal paste between the HS bottom and IHS.
well worse case senario ill just make a piece of foam or cardboard to fill the gap.:up: i dont want to take the extra time to have someone create a metal gasket.

Eh I will post pics tonight, however I have found the perfect mounting things.
Need childsafety caps from a prescription bottle (I happen to have access to alot of them at Rite Aid) and take out the clear plastic gasket on the inside of the cap.
Then place a penny underneath the gasket (which fits perfect) and then put on the mounting bracket and tighten it down :)
The gasket on the inside of the rx caps happen to be very very rigid around the outside of the circle, they apply even pressure as well as having a solid center point from the penny.
i put two #10 washers on my 120x and it still can wiggle a lil bit but its not 'loose' loose per say.
but my temps are kick ass though. i knocked over 10C from my ninja in these hot temps.
I tried this is a large metal washer as well (that's in addition to the plastic one that came w/ the thing). I haven't noticed a difference in temps at all -- if anything they're higher. It's not a fair comparison though since I'm comparing it to AS5 that has cured for 3 months. I guess time will tell.

The Ultra-120 X is lapped and the chip is a lapped B3 Q6600 clocked to 9x333 @ 1.2625V (BIOS) 1.232V in CPU-Z. Before load temps were 60,60,56,57. After the washer install temps are 61,61,57,59. Room temp is 74-75 °F for both data sets. Again, the AS5 still has to "break in" so that'll take a good few weeks. I was hoping for a 4-6 °C drop like others reported.
