Intel CPU's have OC black box

personally if my chip dies I would RMA as long as no physical damage was done to it. I remember when I went through a bad batch of XP 1800+s and I wasn't overclocking them I put them in and they would break down during a linux kernel compile. The hard thing about stress testing dual cores is things that work on single cores don't even come close to stress testing a dual core even if you run more than one instance of the program and force it to run on a certain core. it's a good orthos blend works well. I hope intel just RMAs the X chips and doesn't check them, because that's their publicly OCed chip.

nice guess but if they went that route they might as well put some sort of bar code in the chip that would have the info in it so they could just scan it rather than having to plug it in. I think the extra cost of 128 gates would be too much and raise the price of the chip.

i don't think that you have something to worry about, if the cpu was overclocked just 1-10 mhz...
but what about technologies like asus' a.i. booster. if some layman enables this in his bios, the cpu is overclocked up to 10% by default. with a 2400 mhz this would result in a overclock to 2640 mhz. furthermore the vcore is being increased.

what happens in such a situation?

It is still a overcclock. I am 100% sure there is a disclaimer in the manual that this may void the warranty of thr CPU and the motherboard when used A.I. booster, so, one can only blame oneself.

one simple question..does it really take Intel 3-5 weeks to send a RMA cpu...I doubt a business would accept this..no computer for 1 month

What's the big deal? Don't you already void your warranty by overclocking?

what about intel extreme chips? or AMD FX chips?

with a warranty that specifically denies replacement for overclocking damage; I really dont see why its an issue. Most OC ers have been violating that contract for decades; its basically fraudulent to do so. And since no one has been busted for violation of warranty agreements in the enthusiast camp, id say count your blessings that your illegal activity has gone so far un addressed and prosecuted.

people go outside the limits of overclocking and its their fault the chip gets damaged,not the manufacturer; yet the process of RMA for stupidity continues. Its about time they created a method to check,and thus save themselves money otherwise stolen by crooked overclockers.

talk about a bad marketing move. those that abuse the system aren't lucky, intel is smart. in fact, im willing to bet that people that are succesful in getting a cpu they killed on thier own RMA'd buy at least a few more cpu's later from that company. however if intel went after them or scolded them in any way many of those people would leave the brand forever

I am not saying intel would sue, i am saying violation of the warranty terms is breech of contract on either side.

Same goes For AMD mate, Coolers are shipped with a serial too and need to be used to not void warranty...

I think this is completely stupid, so Intel looks into the so called black box and determines how many Mhz the chip ran at and at what voltage... so where's the line there 10% overclock okay 11% not...

Think it's sort of crap anyway, if you overclock you are voiding ya warranty anyway , plus there's no need to :banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: about steppings etc, each Mhz you get extra is a gift... some peeps are also never satisfied, running their 2400mhz CPU at 3600mhz isn't enough because someone posted he's got his one running at 3800mhz...

Is there real proof of this existence of a black box , I think they just can look into the CPU and see if it's burned on the inside I don't believe there's a black box (was it posted on april foosl day ?) I fried mu mobo , CPU and ram de to a short circuit in the electrical circuit of my house, CPU was an E6400 runnign happily at 3200mhz , 1.35 volts, mobo was RMA'd, CPU came back aswell as did the ram , PSU and vidcard.... so I find it hard to believe they are really looking into it, and you think all CPU's are shipped back to Intel ? Most of them they are traded near the distributor or even just a ya shop....

What is the purpose of this article?

No overclocking 'black box' in Intel chips

I can't believe some of the pussified postings here. Why do you people frequent one of the most notorious overclocking Websites if you don't believe in overclocking? This is not scaredcarefulpussies.com. :rolleyes:

If Intel does have such a black box and does deny RMAs as this article claims, they should make the details and consequences loud and clear ahead of time. But Intel has well-enjoyed its overclocking reputation for years now, and it has become a selling point how overclocakable C2Ds are. I haven't seen Intel sending all of the enthusiast sites scary letters warning of dire overclocking consequences. Not one review site has ever said they have received such a contact after doing a review, and they all overclock in reviews. Intel has laughed all the way to the bank as Conroes overclock well into the 3+GHz range in all of the reviews.

Can't have it both ways Intel - not if you want to avoid class action lawsuits that is...and unless you guys hold Intel stock, how about you be on the side of the enthusiast instead of a rich Fortune 500 company, SINCE THIS IS AN ENTHUSIAST WEBSITE.

If not we would probably have heard about it a long time ago.

It's clear that they are happy of their reputation, they send Golden Samples that performs exactly the same at clock-to-clock against retail... in fact, it overclocks better than any other retail's one... It's with this that Intel sells CPU, they won't crash theirself in the wall, that would be a real bad move! And anyway, if you're not careful enough and crash the CPU because you went too high in voltage, it's normal that Intel wouldn't get it RMA'ed...It's your only fault if it died in your hands! :slapass:

If it has a black box or not do not bother much about it. The only thing I know it will burn.

So when my car breaks because i over-revved the engine the manufacturer should give me a new one?
