I think they could be supported if ATi decides to disable the check for a crossfire-certified chipset in the drivers, yes.

I personally think IF (big if) open crossfire happens this generation, it will be only with the new cards/setup, although I surely could be wrong. It may not even be this generation it happens, they may wait for the DX10 cards/drivers and start fresh there. If it does happen this gen, it may be all old configs would work as they did on a crossfire board, with the old high-end still requiring a master card. I have no idea when it will happen or which cards they'll support. Crossfire will be open-platform eventually though, you can bet your cookies on that. They simply have no other option after RD600.

Probably because they wanna use the same type of cooling they use at current cards.
