I personally think IF (big if) open crossfire happens this generation, it will be only with the new cards/setup, although I surely could be wrong. It may not even be this generation it happens, they may wait for the DX10 cards/drivers and start fresh there. If it does happen this gen, it may be all old configs would work as they did on a crossfire board, with the old high-end still requiring a master card. I have no idea when it will happen or which cards they'll support. Crossfire will be open-platform eventually though, you can bet your cookies on that. They simply have no other option after RD600.
