In regards to 5Ghz on LN2 or 4Ghz on air it would be prudent to wait until it happens and not lambast somebody else just because they hold a different viewpoint to yourselves. It's the future, people will make guesses but there is no certainty. I think we all hope that both those things happen though, as we are overclockers of course.

BeyondSciFi, I'm right with you - it takes one simple look at the charts iterations posted in the other threads. While it does scale quite well, even for Conroe the sPi times/clockspeed curve flattens out at the end and the return you get for increasing clockspeeds is thus diminishing.
And while 5+GHz might be possible in the not-too-distant future, it probably won't come easily. I can't see very many OC'ers getting there, as it will require lots of time and effort (not to mention the money! ;) ).

I honestly can't understand why some people continue to argue about a processor that they have absolutely no experience with. Please listen to me when I tell you, Conroe DOES 4Ghz on air. coolaler has already shown what the 2.66 ES chips will do. I can tell you, for fact, that the 2.93Ghz chips will go to 4Ghz on air. Have a little faith, guys. :)

The whole point I(and other experienced members) have been making is mainly from MOTHERBOARD LIMITATION. The diminishing return in performance is caused when the system is overclocked too hard, in many cases the motherboard is not being able to handle it well. The chipsets get hotter, memory subsystems get very stressed, the voltages fluctuation increases. Even for the CPU part, if it gets pushed too hard, it can cause similar effect. If the CPU has more headroom, the diminishing return wouldn't occur. But the MORE of problem they are having right now is the motherboard's limitation. Give these guys a little time. With more refined set of motherboard and better memory, you will see the superPi number comes down further. You don't have to keep jacking up the CPU mhz to get better numbers in SuperPi or any other benchmarks. FCG already is aware of it too. That's the point he was making also.:nono:Quote:

If someone had said a year ago that Intel would be shipping a chip that XS members would be overclocking to flirt with 10.xx seconds 1M SuperPi on, wouldn't you all have said he was crazy? :nuts:
The worst part is I don't think we have even begun to see what these things can do.
These Conroes will be awesome for SFF gaming rigs, especially with water cooling. No heating up the room like Pressies. :D
I hated the Athlon snobbery as much as the next guy, but this Conroe thing might be so bad for AMD that they go belly-up. This would not be good for anyone. Last thing we need is Intel sitting on its laurels again.
Oh yes... I knew it..... 10 seconds is just a matter of time. 9's will definitely be reached with "more advanced" settings on a better mobo. Don't need more clocks. Good.. good... ;)

I think you'll get more from SS than just 3-400 MHz. I am sure we'll be looking at 5 GHz before long and closer to 5.5 GHz as some mature steppings appear. 10s might fall before this thing even makes it to retail.
